  • We artists know all too well that depicting rocks in landscape paintings is tough. After sharing his vast knowledge with over 20,000 artists during his live online art workshops, Johannes Vloothuis (Jo) recognizes students get frustrated trying to paint striking rocks.
    To overcome this difficulty, Jo has developed an innovative step by step "lift out" method that he will demonstrate. To learn this valuable technique, join him and hundreds of like-minded artists for a free live online RUclips workshop this Thursday, August 25, at 3 pm Eastern.
    In case you cannot attend live, the session is recorded and always available on RUclips.
    Johannes is an award winning artist and instructor for the Artists Network, publishers of several magazines. He is known for conveying the complexity of landscape painting into simple easy to understand terms.

    I used Fabriano Cold Presses watercolor paper. It is the best for scraping out rocks because in my experience the pigment doesn’t seem to penetrate as deep as other Cold Pressed papers. I struggle to get deep darks during the wet-on-wet process in large areas. All in all Fabriano is the best paper for this rock technique.

    Love watching you paint! and I thank you for demonstrating the techniques and for all the information you share. I know they’re just studies but a couple of comments - I think maybe the oil is a little too busy in the water and the rocks, especially on the right, in the watercolour look like they’ve been stuck on.

    A tip I found for you all. Use witch hazel to remove dried acrylic paint. Not moving? Try nail varnish remover.

    • @pipfox7834
      @pipfox7834 4 месяца назад

      Colour mixing is just a mater of practice, after a littlwhile it becomes instinctive. You'll learn best by your mistakes ;) there are books and videos to get you started: on the Colour Wheel

    Do you always use purple and black as a dark for shadows for the rock ?

    • @ArtExpertAN
      @ArtExpertAN 2 года назад

      The darks should be the same hue as the spot you are darkening. Purple really freshens up dark areas.

    Why are honey based paints not usable in this technique?

    • @ArtExpertAN
      @ArtExpertAN 2 года назад

      Honey based watercolor pigments such as Graham tend to stick to the paper and don't allow you to scrape out off paint as much as you get with the other variants.

    Do you think you kind of overdid the water foam? I liked the painting better at 40:55, even 42:10 is not overdone. The abundance of water foam in the finished piece obliterates the nice smooth texture of the sand. Just my humble opinion.
