    Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

    Greetings and love from Saudi Arabia, I'm an artist myself but I have learned so much from you, I started applying your advice on squinting the eyes but in my case I just remove my eye glasses and there it is, the picture is blurry and I'm able to see blocks of shapes and tones to start with before I put my glasses back on.
    Thank you so much for all the wonderful advices you share with the world.

    Haha. I liked the joke with " the rocks immerge". Best example of how to do them I saw in Edward Munck painting. Another great one is early Kandinsky, possibly from his stay in Murnau, Germany. Basicaly is pretty much what you do here, just a diferent style, line,brushwork and choice of color mixes.

    Thanks for another informative video Chris. I always hate painting rocks (and trees for that matter), but you did a fantastic job here. I guess one question I have is about the shadows. They seem to have different values within themselves which I think is hard to portray. Any advice?

    • @paintcoach
      @paintcoach  3 года назад +4

      check out the full tutorial on Patreon lol It's all about minding your values. There are highlights within the shadows but you have to make sure they are lighter but not too light that they don't read as in the shadows. This is why blocking out the the major values first makes it easier because as you work those lighter values in the shadows you know how far you can push them
