This demo has so many excellent tips for improving watercolor landscapes. Jo is a talented artist and a talented teacher. It is easy to tell that he loves to teach what he loves: painting!
Jo’s classes are an amazing learning experience and an excellent bargain. He goes above and beyond in terms of how much information he shares and is extremely generous with his time and talent. Thank you Jo!!! If you’re sitting on the fence and unsure if you want to sign up ask yourself “where else can I learn how to paint from a world renowned artist for around $1 an hour?” Just sign up! You won’t regret it!!
For over nine years I have been watching Johannes Vloothuis demonstrate his artwork in minute detail, showing his viewers the many intricate little nuggets he has picked up along his art career. He has not kept anything secret, which is what many art teachers tend to do as they do not want their students to be greater than their teacher - or in some cases the teacher has no idea why something the brush did turned out that way - but Jo is different, he wants to create exceptional artists from his classes, and he has certainly created many, simply by telling us ALL he knows. And as he is an encyclopaedia of art techniques, every single class we take (mainly online) is packed with new ideas, and often new little sketches in-between his main painting lesson. I can’t say enough about this art demonstrator - he is unique! Not only do his 3 demonstrations (mainly lasting at least 5 hours each) cost less than $20 for the whole three, but he also gives critiques at the end of the 2nd and 3rd classes to paintings the students have worked on from his demonstrations. Also when the demonstration is over the video can be freely downloaded to a hard-drive or picked up again any time at all in the future by going to your account in Artistsnetwork.com Many of Jo’s lessons start with an hour of theory and the notes from those can be found in your account, as well as instructions on which paints and papers to use, and a drawing for you to copy and paint along with him. Nobody online, as far as I am aware, has ever given so much for so little. We normally get three lessons (one each weekend) and one week off. I am bursting with gratitude to Jo, it is like finding an angel in a paint box, whether it be oils, water colour or pastels. Please don’t pass this artist by if you are wishing to lift your work, even if you are a professional artist, or if you are just a beginner - Johannes is the one to help you achieve.
I wish you had another venue for your courses because I bought 3 classes of yours on AN, however when I watch them, I get constant interruptions due to freezing of the video over and over again. I tried downloading a video player per AN suggestion, but that didn’t work either. Dry frustrating and it has stopped me from going to you as an instructor.
Since I’m only 2 years into watercolor I had not heard of this artist. Shame on me! This was an amazing tutorial 😲. Wasn’t sure I could sit through 2 hours but I could not turn it off ... so much information. I just ordered his book and cannot wait to receive it. He is selfless in sharing his tips and information.
Mary Christy Jo is a great teacher whether he chooses oil or watercolor. I love acrylic for more than 18 years and I’ve done his canvases with a fine flare. He takes his time, he answers questions you may have whether brushes or why did he do that brush stroke. I enjoy and look forward to attending his classes, I’ve learned so much. Out of work due pandemic but my hobby keeps me centered, thanks to Jo and all participants.God bless.💯‼️❤️🇺🇸💐
I happened upon this class accidentally and am I ever glad I did! This teacher gives so many wonderful watercolor secrets and that shows to me he really wants to see budding artists succeed. I immediately ordered and have received one of his books and plan to take the class.
I've been taking classes from Jo for three years now, and I always try and watch them all live. Being able to have live questions answered is one of the best features, and Jo will answer all your questions. This demo had a time limit of 2h30m, and it was focused on the particular techniques that Jo wanted to emphasize. A regular class from Jo's Paint Alongs are scheduled for 4 hours, but usually run 5-6+ hours as he makes sure students understand what he's teaching. No one gets left behind. Jo will describe the course's objectives in a lecture, and then do a complete painting (the 3 week Paint Along courses have an oil, pastel and watercolour class!) If you liked this demo, you'll love his full classes. I highly recommend them.
Thank you so much. I just learned a lot. I guessed the piano keys technique. I'm a piano teacher and notice those looked like piano keys when you first were painting the reflections.
Jo is able to articulate the " why" of painting better than any other teacher I have ever taken classes with. One demo carries over into the rest of your painting forever!
I have been with Johannes since the beginning. And every time I watch or paint along I learn something. Best teacher there is. And his lessons are affordable. But worth much more than you pay.
@ Carol... you're very kind, but if you want to see what a true master's work looks like may I suggest googling "John Singer Sargent Watercolors" for starters
When Jo said you will fall in love with rocks I thought - No way. Not gonna happen. WRONG. LOVE this technique and can't wait to make what I have been avoiding forever. Learned so much. Very insightful.
I have just discovered this site... believe is tremendous just today I have learnt more about water colour than ever before. Seems to be very didactic.
Jo is an incredible teacher...I’ve taken several of his Paint Along classes and I’m blown away at the wealth of in-depth knowledge provided that changed my understanding of painting. I’ve taken dozens of classes during Covid and I can truly say I’ve learned things from Jo I’ve heard nowhere else, and presented in a clear, easy to understand manner. As a retired teacher I can attest to his excellent instructional strategies that help students to remember the principles he’s taught. His information centers on composition and rules that apply to all mediums Along with techniques applicable to the medium he’s using that day. He’s a genuine caring person that wants everyone to succeed, so he takes time to answer all your questions immediately in the chat. What’s really unique is he spans all ability levels; whether you’re a beginner or expert, there is something to learn from him. I don’t paint along ; I generally watch it live, take notes, and then replay later as I paint. It’s amazing to me that with people charging $300 for classes on the internet, Jo offers this quality of instruction for a mere $20. I should say that, I don’t want him to raise his prices. Oh, and he’s very entertaining!
Judy Fischer Walton Since I have been working in Watercolor more lately, this demo was perfect. I have been taking class with Johannes for years and have learned so much and have improved my painting greatly. He explains so much about composition and brushstrokes, little nuggets of knowledge that no one else ever gives. I have studied with lots of artists and believe me no one teaches the art of painting like Johannes. No one could be disappointed taking one of his courses. The price is so reasonable and so much advice given.
The most fantastic thing about watercolor is that you can always find colors in a painting against each other that are naturally accidental , and they just catch your eye and create an emotional attachment , of Joy!
Excellent workshop to refresh your techniques and learn new ones. Jo has so much knowledge and shares so generously. I had friends from my Water Colour Studio go too. Everyone got good stuff out of it.
So much quality information. Good thing the video can be stopped and rewound. I will be there for the watercolor seascape and am looking forward to getting the notes. I've found that the notes are excellent, all inclusive and well done.
Wonderful demonstration (as always) Jo. I seldom use watercolour, but have done some paintings recently and I always learn a lot from your great lectures and painting videos.
Totally enjoyed this video and learned so much! Thank you thank you and love the way you use your brush for trees especially your use of the flat brush amazing can't wait to try it !!
Excellent teacher - gives 150% in each lesson - many others charge a lot more money for much less "class time" - Only $19.99 for 3 separate classes usually held on Saturdays. Lessons are for about 5 hours each but many times they will go longer. You can ask questions by typing and Johannes takes the time to answer and even do a separate demo to "show" how something is done. He is will to repeat the principles each time he does a live painting. Try at least one, you won't be sorry. And by the way, this particular Demo was free, which he will do from time to time. Please give Johannes a try.
This is Johannes the artist that gave the demo in this video. Please visit my website to see more of my paintings: www.improvemypaintings.com/gallery/ Also join my Facebook page: facebook.com/groups/Johannes.Vloothuis.Landscape.Alumni
This was really great! I enjoyed every second of your paintings and instruction. I will definitely be signing up for one of your classes. P.S. I love the color of the ocean. It’s way more interesting than a bright turquoise blue would have been and it does create more drama.
Great instruction and techniques. Wish you could get your paint along videos as part of the annual subscription to Artists Network. I have just started watching and there is a lot I would like to learn about landscape painting in watercolor. You make it look easy but I know that this two hour video is just scratching the surface. Just hate that you have to pick and choose because I am sure there is great content in them all and to get to all the ones you have already done would be expensive.
I signed up for your live paint along Watercolor Seascapes on the 26th…how do I access the PDFs for this paint along? Learned so much from this demonstration and can’t wait for the 26th!
Class is today, Saturday -1 PM eastern time. You can log on early (many of us do - and we chat for awhile before the class begins). You can log into your Artists Network account any time and get familiar with the layout (if you're not already). When you log in, click on My Videos at the top, and then scroll to the current class. If you want to "type-chat" with other students during class and ask questions of Jo (in all capitals), you need a free Twitchtv account too. Maybe you already know all of this - but just in case. See you in class.
Thank you all for replying. I did manage to connect just in time. Was watching it on my cellphone, would have loved to be able to watch it on my T.V. Thanks again. Next time I will log in earlier. Great instructor.
The paint along September 26th is 1pm et I live in British Columbia Canada Pacific time. Don't want to miss but sure if its US et time. Please reply. Thank you.
"Not heard of GSM paper".....damn, that made me laugh. Poundage is such an arbitrary value of paper weight and can mean anything. I once came across 1200 lb paper I expected to be like board... it wasn't, just very large sheets of 300 lb watercolour paper because it's weight per ream. "Grams per square metre" makes so much more sense.
Maybe I will grab a bit of Sap Green to vary a bit and for flowers. The greens on my palette are basically surviving because I used to mix greens with Hookers Green. Your paintings are beautiful.

Totally awesome demo by a "master" painter.

You are the guy I've been waiting to learn from for the last two years!!!
Thanks Jo! I just discovered you a couple of months ago. You are a wonderful instructor! I’m amazed at how much I’ve learned so far!
Me, too. Took one of his free demo's and have taken 4 series of his classes since.
Thanks!
When Jo said you will fall in love with rocks I thought - No way. Not gonna happen. WRONG. LOVE this technique and can't wait to make what I have been avoiding forever. Learned so much. Very insightful.
Thank you Randy. I will be asking my family members to watch this video. Thank for your obedience to our Heavenly Father., 🙏

Your moving the grass in diagonal direction to meet otherdiagonsls and movement to take you to focal point.
Would it not be easier if you do the reflexions at the same time? If not why?

Can you tell me how you use the gator board. Is it just stapled down?
How does pastel maintain on a watercolour panting is it acceptable in completion and do you fix it somehow?
what is the 3/4" flat brush that Jo uses for his dry brushing?
Dear John, l wish l could join your online painting class. I live in Asia continent. Thailand, Bangkok.

What do you do with pencil marks on your paintings?
Is there a link to the reference image? If so, can you add it to the description?
I took a screen shot of it..or snip it that works
👍👍🌺😀
For pastels soft or oil
To create another implied leading line.

The artist is Johannes Vloothuis. You can find out about his live online workshops here: www.artistsnetwork.com/paint-along/
doesnt that ruin the brushes ? love how it goes on but worried about ruining good brushes..

Question: What green are you using?
Jo: I’ve done away with all greens, don’t use em.
Palette: 3 greens.
🤣
Maybe I will grab a bit of Sap Green to vary a bit and for flowers. The greens on my palette are basically surviving because I used to mix greens with Hookers Green. Now mostly I use Prussian blue and the various yellows, especially Raw Sienna or Yellow Ochre. To clarify I've done away with tubed greens for foliage.
EASY DOES IT HUH
What is Joe's last name?
Hi David! His last name is Vloothuis
