Here is an interesting fact.
In the late 90s, USN gave up on the idea of using the F-22 as a naval fighter and was deciding on a fighter to replace the F-14. One idea was to buy the Su-33 airframes and fit them with US electronics and a pair of F110 engines.
Eventually, the F-18E/F/G was chosen.
Also, the F-22 program was considering using the K-36 ejection seat. This was a very advanced project that included testing and examples given to the US. I had the chance to examine that ejection seat at the Oceana base A school.

A Soviet pilot in the early 90's said the Cobra Maneuver was useless in combat. He said it was great for air shows. He explained how Nato pilots could easily counter it in combat

Never underestimate the opponent's aircraft, neither overestimate them either. It's always the pilot's skill that makes an aircraft deadly.

We way underestimated the Japanese before WWII began. Japanese combat aircraft like the Mitsubishi A6M Zero and the Nakajima Ki-84 were highly maneuverable, high-performance aircraft with heavy firepower and exceptional range was a major surprise. Again American intelligence was being arrogant.

That is not the case with the Su-30. NATO has had a long hard look at the Su-30 and knows everything about it. It isn't arrogance, it's familiarity.

Not sure why the Cobra Maneuver is named after a Russian. Swedish pilots Bengt Oroh and Ceylon Utterborn executed the Cobra Maneuver in the 1960's flying Saab 35's. Swedish pilots flying the Saab 35's used it to recover from deep stalls.
Even Igor Volk executed the maneuver before Pugachev.
Cause Pugachev was the first to demonstrate it on public on airshow.

Russian aircraft can obviously dogfight. The thing is, they spend most of their design efforts on enhancing supermaneuverability, which deep down, is nothing more than an air show gimmick. Supermaneuverability is mostly useless in a dogfight due to air speed bleeding in order to pull off the maneuvers, and contrary to Hollywood (ahem, Top Gun Maverick), many of these maneuvers, like the Cobra and Kvochur’s Bell are easy to counteract.
@@OMN2012 he's right. Dogfighting today is just the symbol that many things went very wrong during the engagement. Kinda like pulling your knife on the field : last resort if your main gun jammed and no more ammos in the secondary.

The MKI of the Indian Air Force makes this an excellent fighter bomber. Fixes its deficiencies.
Excellent BVR missiles. Avionics and radar. Additionally it can carry the Brahmos for strikes against major targets like a Chinese carrier.
Agreed. The Achilles heel of Russian fighters has been radar+avionics. By replacing replacing with western and indigenous systems, they made what may be one of the best non stealth fighters out there.

“Pugachevs Cobra” is really an old Swedish maneuver made by swedish pilots in JA35 Draken fighters and most jet fighters can do it and all the fancy slow speed maneuvers are just for air shows , in reality those fancy flyings would make you flying a burning lump metal/composite carbon fiber and jet fuel in seconds!

In a more modern engagement its about first seeing your opponent and then getting a weapon lock therefore if you have a huge radar cross-section and also giving off lots of IR heat signature your very likely to get shwacked. Don't underestimate also the logistical and data sharing capabilities of the United States... quite literally the best in the world. In other words if one sees you likely many more do also..

The Cobra maneuver is virtually suicide. It is not used other than for airshows. The SU-30 is a beautiful aircraft, but as practical as the T-14 Armata: it is rare as a unicorn.
It was weird that a pilot of Maverick’s 35 year’s experience had never heard or seen the cobra manoeuvre in a video before.

I don't think doing a cobra will save you in a dogfight unless it lasts long enough for you to get behind the enemy
Also, if it's timed wrong, the enemy plane can just shred you with its main guns as you're a sitting duck and large floating target
The Cobra itself is an air show element, showing off it's manoeuvrability and stability. The whole point is being able to turn the nose towards the enemy at any moment, allowing for a missile lock and launch, or a quick burst with the cannon. Losing its momentum in the process is little comfort when you're already hanging from your parachute.

The Cobra manuver sacrifices airspeed for not much advantage. I've never spoken to, read of, or heard a pilot state that he or she would use such a manuver in actual combat, since airspeed is survival.
It looks cool, but that's about it.

A cobra manoeuvre would kill nearly all your energy and leave you a sitting duck. It’s a cool move but not realistic at all in a real combat scenario.
There are tonnes of pilot interviews that state this. It’s not my opinion. It’s theirs. And it makes perfect sense.

Yeah that’s the issue, NATO doesn’t have a peer adversary buddy, NATO is so far ahead of China and Russia they’re no longer a peer level force.
But also, we fought a massive conventional army in 1991 in Iraq, the Iraqi army was totally equipped and trained by the Soviets and later the Russians, look how quickly they were vaporized to see how Russian equipment stacks up against western gear.
Integration with Brahmos makes it more lethal.

It never ceases to amaze me how much Russian Jets resemble American fighters . Then Again , look at their space shuttle , you could slap USA on it and no one could ever tell the difference!
The reason they do is not because they copy designs (they don't, at least not that much), but because both sides have gained the experience to know that this is the most effective and efficient solution possible. China, on the other hand...
(also, if you at least somewhat know what to look for, the Buran is pretty different from the space shuttle, all things considered)
The Buran looked similar on the outside, underneath was totally different. Just like the B-1/Tu-160. But it's easier to say copy-paste than doing some actual research.
