Most of the technologies in su-30 mki are more than 2 decades old and to compare it with rafale-f-3 version which is only few years old may not be justified because su-30 mki is yet to be upgraded.
It is justified because in real world scenario the two fighting air forces are going to fight with whatever is available in its arsenal, an example would be that an Indian mig-21 had to fight with a Pakistani f-16 in 2019 when things were escalating. The reason to compare su 30 to Rafale is to make comparisons with Chinese Sukhois & j-15 fighters.

yes spectra electronic suite is quite advanced but omnirole capability was also important in selecting, and anyways meteor and mixa are already world class , su 30 mki is old bird ,iaf is already working on supersukhoi by upgrading with our own AESA radar and astra mk2 etc but with su 30 its RCS is a big issue in today's arena ,we can only upgrade sukhoi in its wvr capabilities
During the 1st Airforce day of Rafale(just inducted), I saw Su30 & rafale were using every opportunity to fly together outside their routine. Su30 were following Rafale easily whereas rafale were giving their best to out manuver Su30

In BVR, Rafale can only carry 2 Meteor BVRAAMs. Thus, in BVR combat, once Su-30MKI dodges 2 Meteors from Rafale, the Rafale will be at the Flanker's mercy. Then it will be 10 longer range BVRAAMs (10 Astra Mk1) on the Su-30MKI vs 8 shorter range BVRAAMs (8 MICA EM + 3 1,390 Kg Fuel Tanks). Once the Astra Mk2 is integrated with the Su-30MKI, the Rafale won't be as dominant in Long-Range BVR combat, as it is now.
Pretty decent analysis and covering morew or less all the aspects. regarding the Passive Sensor comparison between OLS-30 and Optronique secteur frontal, just wanted to add some more details because there is a lot more than the maximum range. OLS-30 is basically a classic IRST sensor, being used in almost all Russian Fighter aircrafts and it only uses a wideband Infrared sensor, capable of working in Infrared frequencies only and Laser range finder is required to identify the target and find the range. Because of that, it is very much susceptible to atmospheric interferance and it cannot provide a proper video feed to the Aircraft's display. On the other hand, Optronique secteur frontal is not a single sensor but it is combination of a wideband IRST sensor, a TV/ Laser sensor working on narrow band visible light wavelength, capable of visually detecting targets at 50 km. The Laser range finder in Rafale has a whopping 40km+ range compared to 3.5km in OLS-30 of MKI. Because of these, Optronique secteur frontal works more like a passive radar, scanning up to 150 degree and can detect 100 targets which then can be combined via sensor fusion in the same display of the Radar. The visbile wavelength camera is very important where rules of engagement only allows engagement after visual identification.
But su30mki's pilot and wso on 2bd seat gives it added advantage. As WSO could focus on weapons and pilot can focus on flying....with good coordination this combo could be deadly
Its a piece of garbage that belongs in a museum. Rafale was not designed that long ago. It’s about the same age as the su30mki. And the Rafale is considered decent by western standards. The TLDR version of this video: Rafale blows the Su-30mki out of the water in almost every metric. Su30 has good performance in a dogfight but it doesn’t matter how good you are in hand to hand combat when you’re enemy has a sniper rifle that can see you from miles away.
One good strategy against such fight where it's numerically even . You should get close to the ground for heavy air and use mountains for cover and wait for the enemy to get approximately 30-40 km from you then peek out and use your cobra to point your nose and fire a Astra mk1 and repeating it for 4-5 times will give you victory .it will be really hard but not impossible . Meteor isn't that great when fired from deck and is only slightly better then Astra. Use the factor .

Sir as per my understanding I think angle of attack is the angle between cord line of the wing to the relative wind direction. FPV or flight path vector is the assumed or projected position of the aircraft relative to the horizon in vertical path profile or horizontal path profile. It is displayed in primary flight display to help pilot to land in runways
I think because of the higher t/w ratio, su30 mki has better kinetic energy generation. And because of flying wing design it has lesser air drag compared to delta wing rafale. So, within vidual range i think su30mki will dominate.. But after we integrate with aesa, better avionics and mwr, su30's bvr capability will increase significantly. And there were rumours that iaf trying to integrate meteor with its su30. If that happens and after induction of astra mk2, i guess its bvr capability can match with rafale. But main problem will be rcs. If our super sukhoi program again initiated (i lost update if ita still going on or abandoned), its rcs will also reduce. So, we have all the instruments to make our backbone formidable. Lets hope we do

one thing you missed about the radars, there is difference between search range and track range.. in this category mki will be the winner since its radar can search upto 400km+. AESA radars usually have less search range.

@@userx946 no. Due to western sanctions, Russia was never able to get their hands on the latest chips. Their military technology still uses older computer architecture which is from the late 90’s or early 2000’s. All chips in Russian weapons come from western sources so they don’t really have much of a say in that matter. Now have they done the best with that they have? Yes. With the limited money and resources they did a pretty decent job. But is it anywhere near western tech? Absolutely not. And it’s due to the chipsets Russia receives for its equipment. You don’t have to believe me. You can look it up for yourself online. The su30 mki was ordered in 1996 which is why majority of the russian avionics and tech are of 90’s standards.

There's a very detailed analysis of this aircraft on this channel itself. Regarding the whole chips issue it is severely overhyped. This war has proved it. Russia continues to produce more and more weapons despite sanctions. Other countries which over came chip supply issues include Iran who achieved a very successful drone program and North Korea who continues to make better ICBMs every year despite being under sanctions for decades. This proves one of two things either these countries make chips of their own or they have stable methods to smuggle chips out of west.
Our su 30 have become outdated, IAF needs to hurry regarding its upgradation. It doesn't have missile approach and laser warning system, but Chinese fighters are equipped with these and they also have better radar and avionics compare to oue back bone su 30.
Rafale is better in bvr as well as within visual range fight. I've experienced this in DCS. Many times, it also dominated f22, which is regarded as the best of the best.
A few years ago during real training the Rafale (old version) had beaten the F-22, which upset the USA enormously. They tried to hide this fact, but eventually the videos came out and they had to admit that "well ok it happened" But that doesn't matter, we're all allies👍👍
Su-30MKI was better than Rafale FR1 and perhaps more comparable to Rafale FR2. Rafale FR3 is simply too much for Su-30MKI unless the MKI is upgraded with Super Sukhoi package. As of 2024 ...most advanced fighter in the IAF is Rafale, followed by Tejas mk1A and then Su-30MKI

I think absence of LWR, MAWS makes Su 30 mki is weak. Not only that, due to open air intake, engine blades are clearly visible which is very negative for su 30 mki. It can be easily detected with IRST and passive sensors. It has high RCS also.I am curious to know that what are actual possibility of within visual range combat? It's not about only between Su 30 mki and Rafale... But with all F15 ex, F35, eurofighter typhoon, Su 35 and Gripen. By the way, I am interested same comparison with super sukhoi...
Fantastic topic for discussion. Much appreciated. SU or any other soviet aircraft have superior manuverities and agile in nature which is very good in dog fights. But its a technology of past. Raffle on the the other hand have lesser RCS with berrer avionics and some stealth features. But the aviation vision is fast moving forward to Stealth technology.Faster you spot enemy targets and able to lock on to it is the key of success. Therefore 5+ Generation machines in the only way forward. I am very sceptical about the AMCA project as DRDO have a great record of 25 years or more average delay. But our begger neighbours are announcing Chinese stealth fighter inclusion very soon. So we got to do something very fast to maintain our air superiority in the region ASAP.

Su30mki class have a distinct property at full air to air load its performance is not affected much but Rafale performance at full load degraded sharply.

A powerful AESA (uttam upscaled) radar and meteor class missile will really overcome the rcs disadvantage of the big old flanker.

one thing you missed about the radars, there is difference between search range and track range.. in this category mki will be the winner since its radar can search upto 400km+. AESA radars usually have less search range.
Very detailed analysis. Though as many pointed out SU-30MKI needs upgrades as most of it's technology is of 2000s standards. Whereas Rafale F3R and F4 are a lot newer.

@@userx946 no. Due to western sanctions, Russia was never able to get their hands on the latest chips. Their military technology still uses older computer architecture which is from the late 90’s or early 2000’s. All chips in Russian weapons come from western sources so they don’t really have much of a say in that matter. Now have they done the best with that they have? Yes. With the limited money and resources they did a pretty decent job. But is it anywhere near western tech? Absolutely not. And it’s due to the chipsets Russia receives for its equipment. You don’t have to believe me. You can look it up for yourself online. The su30 mki was ordered in 1996 which is why majority of the russian avionics and tech are of 90’s standards.
@@boejiden7093 SU-30MKI has several non Russian components including the mission computer, EW pods, helmet sights, towed decoy and more. There's a very detailed analysis of this aircraft on this channel itself. Regarding the whole chips issue it is severely overhyped. This war has proved it. Russia continues to produce more and more weapons despite sanctions. Other countries which over came chip supply issues include Iran who achieved a very successful drone program and North Korea who continues to make better ICBMs every year despite being under sanctions for decades. This proves one of two things either these countries make chips of their own or they have stable methods to smuggle chips out of west.
Our su 30 have become outdated, IAF needs to hurry regarding its upgradation. It doesn't have missile approach and laser warning system, but Chinese fighters are equipped with these and they also have better radar and avionics compare to oue back bone su 30.
I guess Sukhoi's is our fleet backbone still they lack Aesa Radars 🤦🏽♂️

36+114 Rafael and Su-30 into 150 Super Sukhoi is the best option for keeping china at bay .
Rafale is better in bvr as well as within visual range fight. I've experienced this in DCS. Many times, it also dominated f22, which is regarded as the best of the best.
A few years ago during real training the Rafale (old version) had beaten the F-22, which upset the USA enormously.
They tried to hide this fact, but eventually the videos came out and they had to admit that "well ok it happened"
But that doesn't matter, we're all allies👍👍

Su-30MKI was better than Rafale FR1 and perhaps more comparable to Rafale FR2.
Rafale FR3 is simply too much for Su-30MKI unless the MKI is upgraded with Super Sukhoi package.
As of 2024 ...most advanced fighter in the IAF is Rafale, followed by Tejas mk1A and then Su-30MKI

I think rafale wins because it,s modern aircraft. It has better radar ,letest countermajor system, low radar cross section and carry top level missiles.

I think absence of LWR, MAWS makes Su 30 mki is weak. Not only that, due to open air intake, engine blades are clearly visible which is very negative for su 30 mki. It can be easily detected with IRST and passive sensors. It has high RCS also.I am curious to know that what are actual possibility of within visual range combat? It's not about only between Su 30 mki and Rafale... But with all F15 ex, F35, eurofighter typhoon, Su 35 and Gripen. By the way, I am interested same comparison with super sukhoi...

SU or any other soviet aircraft have superior manuverities and agile in nature which is very good in dog fights.
But its a technology of past.
Raffle on the the other hand have lesser RCS with berrer avionics and some stealth features.
But the aviation vision is fast moving forward to Stealth technology.Faster you spot enemy targets and able to lock on to it is the key of success.
Therefore 5+ Generation machines in the only way forward.
I am very sceptical about the AMCA project as DRDO have a great record of 25 years or more average delay.
But our begger neighbours are announcing Chinese stealth fighter inclusion very soon.
So we got to do something very fast to maintain our air superiority in the region ASAP.

Always knew that Rafael is the better and more potent fighter aircraft between Su-30 mkI and Rafael, but never thought that Rafael will literally own Su-30 mkI with such ease.
If Su-30 is IAF's backbone then it should really upgrade it to another aircraft with Rafael like or more capable aircraft.

Su30mki class have a distinct property at full air to air load its performance is not affected much but Rafale performance at full load degraded sharply.

WVR WW1 aur 2 k jamaneh ka tactics tha ab BVR hi chal raha hain. Isiliye Technology Advancement required hain. Fire and Forget technology ko improve karna chaahiye. Countermeasures ko ignore karneh wala system hona chaahiye Missile mein.

In 26th Feb 2019 type scenario: Rafale is going to be preferred choice as attacker due to Omnirole capability.
In 27th Feb 2019 type scenario: Rafale is going to be preferred choice as defender due to great BVR capability.
So if not today, SU30 MKI going to be obsolete in/after next 2-3 years as most battles are going to be BVR ?
Su-30mki has some technology which are Decades old while Rafale F-3 standard is quite new. I think after Super Sukhoi upgrade Su-30 will be better than Rafale F-3
@@MrShadw-qn5gp SU-35 also participated in our earlier MRFA competition and IAF choose Rafale over SU35. Super Sukhoi upgrade is nothing but injecting SU-35 capabilities in SU30MKI. So if Su-35 itself is not chosen over rafale then Super Sukhoi has no chance against rafale.

Su-30mki can be compared with Rafale F-2 standard. If the Su-30 can get new engine and avionics and AESA radar it can become equivalent to Rafale F-3. Su-30 have highly Frame with 3D thrust vectoring nozzles. So it'll be king in close combat.
Edit :- We've a large fleet Su-30s and Indeed Russian jets are behind in BVR capabilities but it can become WVR beasts. All i would say is IAF knows what they need. Rafale is better but Su-30s are not Obsolete

So as an indian, i also hope Su30MKI has a better future after upgrade, but can't ignore the fact that close combat is going to be a rare situation in upcoming future. All countries are working towards long range missiles and BVR is going to take more than 90% future air-combat warfare.
After Su-30MKI gets Uttam AESA radar, I hope its detection range would exceed that of Rafale. But Su-30MKI should immediately have its RWR, LWR and jammers.
