Fujifilm X-T30 vs X-T30ii: What's the Difference?

  • Fujifilm has rarely released an updated version of a camera in the middle of a generation cycle. The only time I can remember them doing it was with the X-E2S, which had a slight hardware change, but essentially the same camera. Fujifilm did update the hardware slightly on the new X-T30ii; but it seems it was done just so they could call it a Mark ii version. Without the bare minimum hardware update, people would call foul for basically a firmware update. The camera itself is still competitive within Fujifilm's ecosystem of prosumer cameras, sitting comfortably between the IBIS equipped X-S10 and the selfie-screen X-E4. Which of the three would I choose? Which is best for a stills photographer? Check out my latest video.

Autofocus feels like cheating after learning photography on film lol.

    As an X-T30 owner, the changes are not worth the hassle to sell the camera then fork out more money for the new mark ii. If you want video, why not buy the X-S10 which has IBIS? The extension of the video mode from 10 to 30 minutes is a big deal, but will this little body overheat by then?
    One disappointment with the mark ii body is the off-center tripod/plate mounting hole was not changed and probably would require a new body design to achieve that. The X-S10 has the centered mounting hole and access to the battery compartment is not blocked by a tripod plate.
    Bottom line: if you own an X-T30 presently, this new model does little to entice an existing owner to buy the upgraded camera; you already have a great camera. If a person wants to get into the Fuji system, this is a great gateway camera.

    I think this was probably a minor but necessary 'update' because of parts availability/changeout... people probably shouldn't overthink it, Fuji obviously didn't make a big deal of it. Merely a holdover until the next gen version drops, which is probably 2 yrs away. Still a solid camera in the meantime.

      @jacobcarandang8618 2 года назад +3

      The hardware updates make sense for new buyers. But to original XT-30 users the firmware update would’ve held them over for those 2 years or so. Fuji is basically saying you either have to get this one which is barely an upgrade or wait 2 years for this firmware and film sims that they totally had the capability of adding right now.
      It just feels like if they wanted the new firmware to be exclusive to a new camera, then they should’ve updated more about the hardware to compel current xt30 users to upgrade. You’d only expect this kind of stuff from Fuji if it was a brand new xt40 or something.

      @@jacobcarandang8618 this wasn't released to entice existing x-t30 owners... fuji wasn't going to launch the new sensor/processor with this model, and that's the only compelling upgrade option for mki owners. It's not (just) a paid firmware update. It's also a way to just increase the price of the X-T30 altogether. The mk I is going out of production already. So the X-T30 now just became a €900 mirrorless camera that somehow doens't have IBIS or weathersealing. It made a lot more sense when it was cheaper than an a6400.

    I liked the very informative video. I know I am 2 years too late commencing, as I am possibly only interested in one of these cameras now.
    Whilst you covered a lot of information, you left out the very core of the camera, image quality, ISO performance, as far as noise is concerned and dynamic range. I assume it is the same sensor, and there is no difference. But you could have clarified that at some point during the video, I watched the video for nothing. The film simulations etc don't interest me, I understand that they interest most people, I just wanted to know what sort of raw files the sensor produces, especially in low light. You didn't have to do one of those side by see side image quality shots on video, but you could have done the test and told us about your results.
    I am not being critical for the sake of it, it is just that there are other people like me too, who would have found a minute or two talking about the sensor/image quality important. Even though I understand we are probably in the minority.

    I don't understand what Fuji is thinking here. The reason so many of us shoot Fujifilm is because of their firmware updates. The X-E2 and X-E2s being a prime example. They offered an update to the X-E2 to make it equivalent to the X-E2s when it was launched. This is iterative profit margin driven product development and it is the exact opposite what brought so many of us to the Fuji X system in the first place. I'm dumbfounded. This will be a death of a thousand cuts to Fujifilm's camera division.

    • @bigheadtaco

      Previously Fujifilm used firmware updates to improve the performance of their cameras, as well as add features that customers were asking for. Since they had few cameras and were growing their camera business, they offered regular firmware updates for these reasons. Now that they are more popular and have plenty of camera options, I think regular firmware updates have become counter-intuitive for Fujifilm. Why work on an older camera's firmware that's no longer in production (although they might be in stock) when they can focus their attention on selling current cameras? I'm not defending it, I think they should have offered the X-T30 and X-T3 the newest firmware. However, as you saw just after the last X-Summit, they introduced the X-T30ii and discounted the older X-T30 and X-T3 to move stock. It's unfortunate for X-T30 and X-T3 owners.

    • @kevindiossi

      @@bigheadtaco it really is unfortunate, but understandable. However, no X-T30 owner will be compelled to buy an X-T30II with so few hardware improvements. @@kevindiossi They're not really trying to sell the XT30 mark II to X-T30 owners, they're just trying to sell their pandemic level stocks to new people by refreshing it a little bit.
      XT30 is kind of entry level in the Fuji system (the XT200 failed hard) if you want all the buttons and dials promised by Fuji. Going XE4 or XS10 don't give you that and they can't really make an XT40 (since the XS10 is kind of that already).
      My guess is that they sold a lot of XT30 before covid, but it fell down since march 2020. Couldn't scale down production like that so they have to move that stock. Cheap move.

    I decided to buy the XT30 II after weeks of consideration as my very first camera and your video helped so much! May I ask which lens you would advise for the start? The camera comes in two "Kits", one with the XC 15-45 mm lens and one with the 18-55mm. I would love to use the camera for my upcoming trip to England to shoot villages, houses, streets, churches, the beach. As I am just starting, I don't want to switch lenses all the time. I was recommended to go with the 18-55mm (but they did not have the kit with the 15-45mm in stock :-)). Do you think the 15-45mm would be ok to start or would I never forgive myself afterwards for missing the "better" option 18-55mm? Or would you recommend any other lens over the two mentioned above?
    Any advise would be so much appreciated! Thank you!

    • @Harmonicat
      @Harmonicat Год назад +6

      I think it really depends on if you want the zoom capability in your lens (based on you saying you don't want to switch lenses I guess you do) but I think a really good lens option would be a 23mm lens. It's not super wide but also isn't incredibly long and having the fixed focal length would encourage you to be more deliberate with your framing and positioning rather than just zooming in. Would also allow you to use a wider aperture if you're taking the camera around with you at night to take pictures.
      There is also the XF 27mm f/2.8 which is a really compact lens and would really help with the pocketability of the camera rather than having to bring a bag all the time to store it in when you're out. Both lenses can be had for around the same price as the add-on price of the 18-55 in the x-t30 ii kits and from my experience using 18-55 lenses (not the fuji one mind you) I much prefer the fixed focal length.
      Lastly, there would be the Fuji 35mm f2 lens. 35mm on APSC cameras is a great focal length and I really enjoy shooting architecture and stuff with that focal length, I actually went on a trip in the summer and despite having another lens with me I kept a 35mm lens on my camera practically the entire time. Works well for portraiture (I use mine for taking pictures of my pets a lot) as well as just a genera walk-around lens.

    So this one vs. that one....hmmm.
    I really want a small camera to travel light with. I'm waist deep in Canon, but the Fuji XS10 looks tempting, as do the XT30's. I'm thinking a pancake and the 18-55 f2.8-4 and maybe a short telephoto prime. I have big hands. But I want all dials - no menus. Is the IBIS worth it for stills? I'm not looking to switch, just add a walk around for informal fun. I'm presently using a Canon M50 with a 22mm pancake lens and the kit zooms, but I'd sell them to get better. I only shoot some video with the M50, mostly stills. These look interesting. Is XT-20 too old? 😂

    • @showdaKOs
      @showdaKOs 2 года назад +2

      I think, since video is not important for you, you should go with the XT30. A used mark I if you're on a budget (you can check on KEH or MPB) or, if you can, the mark II is just slightly better but better still. I have the XS10 and it's a great one but lacking in the buttons and dials departement, I just needed the stabilisation in photo and video.
      But I think, the day I can, I'll buy an XT30, as my small every day and back up camera. With a pancake, it's a pocketable solution, maybe big pockets but still.

    • @johnherzel718

      @@showdaKOs I am thinking that you are correct. XT 30 is not too expensive used, but the 18-50 is hard to find deals on. Might have to go with a 2 prime lens solution. But like i said originally it's a fun (walk-around) camera. The original XT30 is good enough.
      Thanks 👍

    • @bigheadtaco

      IBIS is totally worth it for stills. I've hand held down to 1/2 with a wide lens and pin sharp. But if you're not shooting at night or when the light is low, and you've survived so far without, then maybe you can live without it. However, once you have it, it's hard to give it up without dragging a tripod with you everywhere. I guess you will have to test the X-S10 to see if you feel comfortable with it.

    I have the XT30 and won’t be upgrading. To be honest I think this is the worst marketing decision Fujifilm has ever made. Really pissed off a lot of Fujifanpeople like myself. For newbie’s spend the little extra and get the X-S10 it has image stabilization. All I need from Fujifilm is the ability to delete Sepia from my OG XT30 and replace it with Classic Neg. Please Fujifilm please pretty please.

    Makes sense to buy if you don’t have one yet. But they really should’ve given the firmware update to the xt30. I highly doubt it helps them from a business perspective, I would never upgrade an xt30 to this just for firmware and a screen. The firmware from Fuji is usually free but I noticed they love to put their film simulation settings behind a paywall, especially when the hardware update is so minimal.

    • @bigheadtaco

      I agree with the film simulations being used as a carrot. They did add Classic Neg to the GFX50S and 50 R on a firmware update, but that’s because the GFX is their premium line. The advantage of the X-T30ii is the multiple dials and buttons, so you don't have to dig into the menus. I also appreciate the smaller and compact design, compared to the X-S10. However, the X-S10 has a deep grip for better handling, especially with larger lenses. The biggest difference is the X-S10 having IBIS or In-body Image Stabilization. This may be true, but it doesn't explain why the X-T30 and X-T3 didn't get the latest firmware updates to put them on par with the newest cameras with the same sensor and processor. The made slight changes to the X-T30ii so they could sell it as a 'new' camera while getting rid of the final parts left on the original X-T30, and dropped the price of the X-T3 so they could move the final stock. I'm not happy this was their decision, but it makes business sense. I just feel bad for the original X-T30 and X-T3 owners who were waiting for the latest firmware.
