I 100% agree with you on the 3050, it has a place. I feel until the Intel A series start turning up on the surplus market, the 3050 is going to be the best option for more modern office computers to game with. Over the last few years there have been so few low profile cards on the market that it has been tough. 1650s still sell for well over $100 in my area, especially low profile versions. I have bought some great Optiplex type systems recently for very little, a 9th Gen i5, with NVME and 8GB of ram was $80, I got a Lenovo Office minitower for $100 with a 10th Gen i7, 512GB NVME and 16GB of memory. Throwing a 3050 would give you a very powerful gaming PC for less than $300.a used A380 would put it at as little as $180.

Not the same prices in the UK, but damn close. You can get an Optiplex MT with 8th and 9th gen i5s for £140-170 with a 20% off code from certain sellers on ebay, 8 or 16GB of RAM and 240/256GB SSDs. Slap in a £159 RTX 3050 6GB and its a solid build already. I would just recommend more storage.

Added benefit of the 8th Gen Intel platform is Windows 11 compatibility. I know you can "force" Win 11 installs on unsupported platforms, but for vast majority of people a budget build should be worry free on OS support for the next few years.

When I was in my teens, always in tight budget, I used to do this kind of builds a lot. This was in the 90s, though, and no usable computer part was cheap back then. Nowadays I tend to assemble these kinds of systems to run machines, for lab students, etc., and they are still awesome, and very silent. I have a fat machine at home these days, but I really love these builds that treat respectfully things that others call e-waste and are great for kids, programming, light development and light gaming.

Interesting... you mentioned the 4th Gen Optiplex, and this looks to use the same power supply. That means the XE2 365 watt power supply might work in this system and it has a 6-pin PCIe power connection. What an interesting little system for a entry level build, with a decent CPU, and some upgrade path and should destroy the 4790. The is pretty awesome! However, I don't agree about the i7 9700 as it can still hold it's own against the R5 5600. Granted, that 5600 can be upgraded to an X 3D part and leave it in the dust.

Video Idea: PC build using as many used parts from friends, only unused stuff for free, as you can. The stuff they pulled out of their rig and have set on a shelf in the closet, or accumulated randomly, or oem bits like coolers when they used aftermarket. --- If someone needs a functional case, some slower or older ram, misc fans, oem coolers, etc ... Well, I have enough of that stuff sitting in boxes and bins that I'd happily give it to a friend just to clear out some space. If they saved $100 or more they might not have as fancy looking of a system but they could spend that money elsewhere for more performance. A buddy just contacted me asking when I wanted to grab the ram I let him borrow for troubleshooting. I didn't even remember he had it, haha.

No pint in going with dlss ultra performance, since you won't be able to see the reflections with the resolution so low... ultra quality dlls is already cutting it since with raytracing, you can barely see the reflections, and you take a big fps hit. It would be best to leave dlss off and rtx on so you can attract and see the reflections... otherwise, what's the point of using RTX if you're just going to run the game at ultra low resolution ?

If you try the Dllsg-to-Fsr3 mod you can get cyberpunk to 60fps with the medium and dlss mode where you got 45fps before. Should be worth a try!

great video! I managed to pick up 4 of these 8 months ago for $35 a pop. you can get a PSU adapter for 10-15 from Moddiy if you catch a sale. Other than the name value of the 3050 I think its a better option. Can we get a follow up with a 6600xt or similar?

Why no quad cores? Lack of hyperthreading seems to cause issues with some modern games and the i7 6700/7700 still perform well. I imagine that neither would be a bottleneck for the 3050 6gb. The 6th gen intel HP Envy systems have motherboards with standard power connectors. Making a PSU + GPU upgrade later pretty simple. Though, to be fair, those CPUs perform considerably better with an overclock but that simply isn't doable on OEMs.

I've seen 9th gen dell mini towers for $150 and less. Also, couldn't you run a 1080 ti / 1080 / 1070 for better gaming performance albeit w/o RT? Realistically on such a budget 1044p/1080p non RT is where you fall to.

Hey Ozi, thank you for another great video on older tech. I still have my old 3rd platform, I did upgrade the i5 3470 to an i7 3770. The motherboard is an Intel DH61WW, I believe it was from some office computer, but the layout is pretty standard compared to these proprietary motherboards.
Ram is limited to 16gb at 1600mhz and has some slots for expansion. I am running a Gigabyte GTX 950 single fan card on it, but would like to upgrade that at some point if possible, and eventually into a smaller case to make it a little more compact.
I would love to see a video where you dive into even older hardware, just to show they are still capable machines, but I'm aware not for modern titles, but maybe for older games or even retro games like a emulation machine.
That being said, and know what mobo, ram, and CPU my old system runs, what GPU would you say would be perfect for it without bottlenecking anything to high heavens?

This is one of the few scenarios in which a mediocre card like the 6 Gb 3050 could potentially shine. But IMO its RT capabilities are only there on paper. It's a glorified GTX with tensor cores for DLSS.

Not a bad build but at that price point you can build an am4 ryzen 5 2600 with a rx 5700 on the used market and it'll run circles around this pc. It only makes sense if you already have a one of these office pc's lying around. Otherwise better to spend that money on an am4 build

one recomendation, go for amd, if budget is strict, get a r5 5600, or a r5 7600 if you can, never get less than 16gbs of ram in dual channel, good luck

I have both 3050's in ASUS dual fan guise. The 6gb I have paired with a Ryzen 5 1600 and it works very well. However, what I did notice is the sound coming from the card. It's louder than the 8gb, to the point that I've used MSI Afterburner to reduce the fan speed from 68% to 30-40%. Did you notice any loud noise from this card? Maybe mine is defective.
