      I assume the memory timing straps are too tight for double capacity memory chips? So that when it drops to idle speeds, the timings get very tight. That's just the first thing that comes to my mind. I believe he used some custom straps, but there's several that ya need, from idle to max and everything in between, all 7-8 stages. This upgrade is definitively worthwhile if one has the faster binned 2GB Samsung too (K4ZAF325BM-HC16). RTX 3070 is severely VRAM limited in many new games, including Jedi Survivor, Horizon Forbidden West, Cyberpunk 2077 and many others. Those games need at least 11GB of VRAM, so even RTX 3080 10GB is having not enough. It is also interesting that RTX 3080 10GB is already obsolete, in terms of VRAM, yet many pay hefty price for it, only to realize they run out of VRAM.

      I'd suggest to get some sort of cheap donor to learn on. Don't do this on your main card or anything that you use on daily basis. Otherwise it'll hurt far too much if you ruin the one thing you need at any given time. Luckily I was smart about this when it comes to PS4 controller repairs. I have three controllers (one original, 2 cheap aliexpress replicas), cheap controller had pretty gnarly stick drift and original one has a slight one, for learning I used the replica one in case I screw up and I did, now that controller is dead, but I learned so much from that and managed to swap analog sticks on my original one after that failure. Just a simple repair yet so easy to mess everything up.
      Don't be scared to fail, just be mindful when it comes to these upgrades (if it's not broken, don't try to fix it unless you know what you're doing and will be able to revert everything back to normal with applied upgrade)

      That was to make sales without taking away sales from more expensive products, it's market segmentation for more money. A slow card with more memory,a fast card with less memory,a fast card with more memory,charge through the nose for the card that has it all but still sell the crappier cards then sell them a new one when it isn't good enough.

  • @italian316

    The primary distinction of VRAM is the occasional micro stuttering however some people exaggerate that lower VRAM will make a game unplayable. In reality 8GB of VRAM at 1080p/1440p resolution with DLSS/FSR and high/medium quality settings is quite sufficient. This card is not designed to run native 4K at ultra quality.

    This crashing after switching back to idle is a known problem after upgrading cards to a "non official VRAM amout".
    Maybe some older drivers will work but I'm not sure. Furthermore you can try the card in Linux if switching back to idle after load works there.
    Another work-around I've seen is to add some more capacitors to the memory rail. Maybe it will reduce the peeks after changing the load.

    People always say that the bottleneck when you go over your VRAM is the system RAM. However, in reality, your system RAM isn't all that much slower than your VRAM. The problem is the PCIe slot bandwidth!
    Even a full 16 lanes of PCIE Gen 5 can only match the bandwidth of 3200 MHz DDR4. And there is no GPU that supports Gen 5 PCIe yet. The max you can expect is 16 lanes of PCIE Gen 4; which is half of that bandwidth!

    • @GraphicsCardRepairs-tk7ql
      @GraphicsCardRepairs-tk7ql  3 месяца назад +2

      You are right. The bottleneck is the PCIE bandwidth. But compared to the GDDR6 VRAM, GDDR4 is much slower. GDDR6 is directly available to the GPU compared the the DDR4 RAM which has totravel through the PCIE than to tthe CPU and then to the DDR4 RAM and make its way back. This is a topic on its own. May be i will cover it in the future.

    I have a EVGA RTX3070 FTW3 8 gig.and I love it. In a lot of situations it is more what gpus can do with the allotted memory than how much actual memory the card has.A low tier card with 12gigs is still a low tier card! Granted there are games that will max out any 8gig card but I knew that when I bought my gpu. Not everyone has unlimited funds or soldering expertise.

It's always tricky trying to rework boards with hot air(And I'm meaning SOIC-8, Like SPI flash chips for BIOS).... Doing BGA's is just a nightmare. Especially if they're sensitive ones... I'm lucky my day job has an entire PCB line from pick and place to test. So I get to sneak a few of my experiments through their reflow ovens after hours.. Even then I've found it can not work well.

    I have the White Edition version of that card. I just subbed and liked. If you indeed have a guide on this 2 parter, I am going to give it a go. I would love 16GB on my card. It would give it life that it wasn't going to get otherwise. The issue I see with the 3070 has always been VRAM limitation as I like to play in 4K. Once it starts using that 8GB of cache it yanks from main memory, you can see the issues. I noticed that the extra VRAM on these cards prevent the .1% and 1% low dips that are common with 8GB cards trying to run in 2160p. That in itself is worth it. I have thought about selling this card and buying a used 2080 Ti with the money for too long now. I have also considered financing a 4080 Super. Both of these ideas should not be things I think about. Ever. This card should have come with the 12GB they gave the 3060. It would have made so much more sense.

I dropped Nvidia after the 20 series launch, with that 2070 FTW3 super still running strong. The Arc A770 I bought "Just to see" has been a flawless performer even out pacing my borrowed 4060 just to test things out. Though admittedly the 4060 is better it still sports on 8gb of ram which gimps it in newer titles with high graphics settings.

When I tore down the GPU to bare PC board to replace the thermo compound, I noticed that the board had two unoccupied spaces where the extra 2GB of memory would live if this were a Ti version board. I was thinking about adding the missing RAM chips but was concerned that the board would not recognize the additional memory due to addressing issues. Decided to not take the risk in case my concern was valid in which case I would not have any idea on how to correct the problem.
