Pat Riley once said “if I had to pick one player to take a shot to save a game, I’d pick Michael Jordan. If I had to pick one player to take a shot to save my life... I’d pick Larry Bird.”

Larry was all about team. At the same time, he could take over a game. I loved watching the NBA back then.

  • @Finnssssss

His lefthanded game was 22 of 47 lefty.
The rest of the quote from James Worthy about preferring to guard MJ over Bird was...
    "MJ made you look slow.
    Bird made you look stupid."
The almost quadruple double was 30 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists and 9 steals in 3 quarters.

It's nice to see your journey with Bird. I was one of the ones in your first video that said he eventually would be your favorite player. It's legit impossible not to like his style of basketball.
Courtship of Rivals is up next for you. You should chop em up into 3 or 4 vids. It's a long documentary about Magic and Larry.

It was so fun to watch him play. I was raised in SoCal, and a huge lakers fan. One game, I kept saying who is that guy?! I couldn’t help being impressed. Even though I hated what he was doing to my Boys, he was so entertaining to see, that I angrily asked why he wasn’t on our team. 🤣😂🤗

  • @kevincosta9228

The best thing about Bird is there's always more to the story.
The time when he was one steal away from a quadruple double after three quarters? He checked himself out of the game after three quarters because they were annihilating the other team. When his coach realized the stats he asked Larry if he wanted to get back into the game and get that last steal. Bird said 'Nah, I've already done enough damage tonight." He simply didn't care about his stats. He only cared about his team winning the game.
The time he dropped 60 points on the Hawks? That was a friendly game of "can you top this?" with his team mate Kevin McHale. Kevin had broken the all time Celtics scoring record (held by Bird) by scoring 56 against the Pistons, then checking out with a few minutes left. Bird said to him "Are you crazy? You should stay in and go for 60.' McHale told him he was tired and had enough. After the game he jokingly told McHale "Kevin you should have gone for 60 because this record may not last." Nine days later Bird went for it himself. There's a video of the story of that game, with Hawks players and his Celtics team mates talking about the experience. "Hilarious trash talk story told by NBA legends. He dropped 60 points on us!" It's a good one. The thing is, Larry could score huge most any time he felt like it, but team play was more important to him.
And the left handed game against Portland? It was 1986 and the Celtics had a home record that season of 50-1, including the playoffs. The only team to defeat the Celtics at home that season were the Portland Trail Blazers, in December of 1985. Two months later they met up again in Portland. The night before the game, Bird announced to the reporters and team mates who were there that he would play the game left handed at least through three quarters (though he did shoot jumpers right handed). After the game, reporters in Portland asked him why he did it and he said "I'm saving my right hand for the Lakers". Really, though, I think he was just showing the Trail Blazers that their victory in December was a fluke, that he could beat them left handed if he wanted to.

The Celtics - Lakers rivalry in the 1980's was the best there ever was in the NBA imho. From 1980 - 1989, either the Celtics or the Lakers were the NBA champs for all but 2 of those years. The '80's is the era of basketball that I grew up watching and it was a much more physical game back then where you would only get a technical for fighting instead of being ejected, it was ROUGH. Great reaction man. 🙏✌️

  • @irishgrl
    @irishgrl 11 месяцев назад +4

Larry basically had 12 years in the NBA since that 89 season was only 6 games.
So 12 All Star selections in 12 years.
The 3 NBA championships had the highest degree of difficulty of any player ever
And he deserved the FMVP in 81 instead of Cedric Maxwell
All of this while the last 7 years were riddled with back problems. Larry played injured for over half his career.
If you count his mangled finger, he played injured for the whole career!
There will never be another Larry Bird

In the 1985 finals Bird played with an injured hand. It was revealed in November of that year that he injured his hand in a bar fight prior to the NBA finals. His numbers were down after the fight.
I also never got to watch Bird live during some of those 80s finals games as they were tspe delayed.

  • @patrickreynolds9853
    @patrickreynolds9853 9 месяцев назад

Bird only worried about stats and numbers when he had a point to prove (think his 60 point game against Atlanta). The rest of the time he worried about his teammates and team. Bird constantly monitored his teammates points. If someone wasn’t playing up to par Bird would start feeding them the ball to get THEIR stats up and get them to engage in the game. He would also start forcing the other team to double and triple team him to create shooting lanes for his team. Bird was the very definition of a TEAM player.

James Worthy who said he'd rather guard Jordan than Bird elaborated further on his reasoning. He said Jordan made you look slow, Bird made you look stupid. I think most players would rather look slow than stupid. I've also heard Jordan credit Bird with teaching him to trash talk.

    18:56
Isaiah Thomas pointed out the most remarkable thing about that play. In 2.5 seconds, he did the following:
    1) read the inbound pass
    2) team from the far end of the free throw line
    3) intercepted the pass
    4) *STOOD ON HIS TOES* because, with his back to the baseline, he knew exactly where he was. If he had stood flat footed, his heels would have been on the line.
    5) Found DJ cutting in the lane
    6) Made a perfect pass
He didn't run especially fast. He didn't jump high. He didn't display superhuman strength. He didn't even make the shot. But *NO ONE* except Larry Bird could have made that play. That was his entire career in microcosm.

I feel lucky as hell to have been able to watch Bird play his whole career. I can tell you that ever game Bird played in, he did something amazing. He was three steps ahead of everyone on the court. I tell people that yes Jordan was unstopable, but Bird was unbelieveable. He is still the best shooter i have ever seen. He did things that you couldn't examine, there was no way he just did that. But he did. If he had not nearly broke his back in 1987, and had two bad feet later in his career. I believe he would have shatted ever record in the nba. He was that great! Magic was right. THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER LARRY BIRD! He's my GOAT. And it's not even close.

But and its a big one ill argue any day that the only thing Labron has over Bird is Longevity , it took him almost two times as many years as Bird played in total to pass Bird in number of achivments.

The thing about him and Magic is you really can't pick one over the other for greatest ever. Those two are the greatest ever. They saved the NBA before they ever went pro. There is no NBA if there aren't fans to spend money on it. Look how many college sports there are but you never see or hear about them on the next level because people don't care about them, they don't watch or keep up on them. Their college championship game was the highest watched game of all time and people wanted to see that rivalry so they watched the NBA the next year. Statistics don't matter in pro sports, what matters is interest. There's a good chance that if that college championship game never happened, there may not have been an NBA 5 years down the road, it would have been as popular as the WNBA is now. Playing in front of a thousand people a night and just keeping the lights on for a game would have costed more than the proceeds from the game. The WNBA loses money but is carried on at the expense of the NBA. Had those two not played against each other there may have never been a MJ, KD, Lebron or Steph. Those two were the best to ever do it because they drew crowds. Professional sports are strictly entertainment and they were the show. They're still the show, obviously or this video you just did would have never existed.
