I saw Larry at the old Boston Garden over 20 times. He played every game with playoff intensity and he was a living, breathing highlight reel.
I've never seen anyone better than Larry in his MVP years. So, for those years and a couple on either side of those Larry was the GOAT.
BUT, Michael, Magic, Kareem, Bill, Wilt, Kobe, Lebron...I don't know. You can only fit so many into your top five. I've only got eight.
    Loved your thoughtful reaction.

I have Larry as the #1 of all time. People talk about one guy is a better shooter, some other guy is a better passer, another different guy is a better defender, or rebounder, or whatever. Yeah, maybe you can find someone better than Larry at any given thing, but you will never find someone better at everything, or really even in more than 2 categories. Larry had the complete game with no holes. On top of that, he made his TEAM better too. He boosted his teammates stats.

If you are looking for reasons to give the title of “best all around player” to Larry over LeBron. Just check the boxes next to “plays hurt, hustles, IQ, shooter, sticks with one team and makes them better as a coach on the court, rather than chase championships from team to team that are stacked.”

Absolutely agree with you on the Eastern Conference in the 80's. Just as I do with Clayton.
The Hawks, Cavs, Pacers, Bulls, Pistons, 76ers, Bucks, Knicks...all were really good teams in the 80's for the most part.
The Lakers and Rockets were the two most consistently dangerous teams in the west. Though the Jazz, Warriors, Sonics and Spurs often were good teams, they never posed a threat to what the Lakers or Rockets could do.
The Nuggets, Mavericks, Suns, Kings, Clippers...were always teams that had 2-3 solid players and garbage around them, so they usually sucked.
Only the Bullets and Nets in the Eastern Conference were consistently bad teams.
Larry Bird is just something special. He is and will always be my all time favorite player in NBA history. I grew up watching him, my grandparents knew Larry's parents and I got to meet him during his charity golf tournament and get his autograph on a golf card. (I didn't have a basketball for him to sign at the time, and the sharpie pen style markers were not a thing yet).
I wish I could get to meet him again. He lives a kind of reclusive lifestyle now, mostly stays home in French Lick. I only know this because of being in Terre Haute where the Indiana State Sycamores play.
Of which, A statue of Larry Bird is outside of the Hulman Center where the Sycamores play and a small street where the parking garage is, is named for Larry Bird as well. They also are honoring him with the Larry Bird museum that will open next year. That is how special Larry is to this area.
My hope, is that someday soon, someone will see this and say...I want to be remembered that way as well. Join Larry Bird in this town and get a statue and street and museum made for themselves here. Know that this place honors a legacy. There have been several things that are bad in this town, but there are good parts as well.
Tommy John and Mordechai Brown in Baseball both are intwined in the history of this town. Tony McGee in Football.
Brown Ave is named for Mordechai Brown. Tommy John unfortunately hasn't been back since he left or he probably would have a street named for him and a statue where the Baseball team plays. I am hoping with a new mayor in town, I might be able to convince him to make that happen for Tommy John. Make it happen for Tony Mcgee and for Mordechai Brown as well.
I just would love to see the next great athlete come here and establish a legacy like that as well. I think it would be special, especially if they go pro and do something special while at ISU. I know this town wants it as well. It gives hope to this place when we have something to rally around.
It means something and we respect the legacy of those people who do something special. Both in college and as a pro.

I watched the doc series Johnson vs Bird: A Courtship of Rivals and there’s one thing I’m just so curious about. In the doc, it said that in 4th grade he couldn’t wait to get out of school because he would go over to the court and watch the basketball games there. He said that it consisted of the wait staff that just got off work and that they would let him play with them…
I want to know what they thought of the boy they mentor becoming one of the greatest basketball players in NBA history. I’m just fascinated with what they thought about it.

A case could be made that every decade has 1or 2 players that could lay claim to the G.O.A.T. title. In the 70's there was Kareem and Walt Frazier, in the 80's there was Bird and Magic, in the 90's there was MJ and Shaq, in the 2000's there was Kobe and Tim Duncan, and in the 2010's there was LeBron and Steph Curry.

The 3's and 33's associated with Bird are interesting:
    - 3 league MVPs 3 years in a row
    - 3 "3" point contest wins, 3 years in a row
    - he won 33 straight games in college
    - 3 NBA championships
    - jersey number was always 33
    - has statistically 3 "50/40/90" seasons (if you do the math correctly)

The late 80s to early 90s I believe was the best era of the NBA. Jordan, Bird, Magic. Sadly injuries added up and cut Bird's career short and Magic got HIV. That left Jordan to dominate. I am not saying that Jordan does not belong in the GOAT conversation, but having the 2 other best players in the league having to leave early made it much easier on him. He played several years with a healthy Bird and Magic and never made the finals. I think people forget that when they say only Jordan has a claim to GOAT. I honestly cannot say who was best of the 3.

Actually Larry Bird had the number 33 in high school, college and in the NBA. Bird grew up poor, tough, loyal, had heart and never quit. I love Magic, but I choose Larry. That one shot they show Bird missing is the only time I know of where that happened.
Keep it up with the bird videos please.

There is one other rivalry that was legendary, it just took place well before Bird and Magic that no one talks about it any more. That rivalry was between Wilt Chamberlain (Lakers) and Bill Russell (Celtics… how very coincidently odd). It was huge back than. Just there’s no one around any more (Russell I believe died last year) to talk about it and there’s no real good video of their games to watch without getting irritated about the quality of the tape.

Jordan, Bird at the top.. THEN Magic and Kareem.. then like 5 or 6 other players. including lebron, Kobe, Wilt, Hakeem, Duncan, Shaq, KD, Oscar Robertson etc..

bird has better rebounding, steals and shooting numbers than lebron. Lebron scores more, averages slighlty more assists, and they BOTH average .8 blocks a game. Bird has a waaay better post game and moves WAAAY better without the ball. Lebron drives to the hoop better and finishes better. I'd take Bird over Lebron.
