This album blew my mind back in the day. A woman, singing like THAT? Cursing, the subject matter, the rawness; there'd never been anything on mainstream radio like that before. It was eye-opening and life changing. I started listening to a wider variety of music, searching out things that didn’t get radio play, and the stuff on the radio grew in variety. Great moment in music history.
totally man, an absolutely enlightening album for a mass of men (who were listening). this song the best version of feminism most men have experienced haha and total compliment intended. JLP was outstanding wee album. Ahh to be young again lol
Also, Madonna signed her and allowed her to make this album. I don't believe men would have allowed her to make this. I'm sure even in the process men tried to get her to "tone it down". Imagine being able to feel like this. Anyone with this depth of visceral emotion can heal the world! Like Salt 'N Pepa said "to the lucky man whos up next, either treat or just step!"
Nah. Alanis Morissette was just riding the mainstream wave of post grunge, women's, alternative rock that was popular at the time. "Hole", "veruca salt", pretty much started that whole 90s trend
Hmmm, I never thought she was bashing men. She was bashing a terrible EX who left her. No misandry from her lyrics at all. AND I must point out, that her lyrics are AWESOME!!!!! Poetic AND they tell a raw story. I've always thought this song had fantastic lyrics :D

Jagged Little Pill was is a masterpiece of anger, emotion, and female oppression. She broke down the mainstream door for women to be able to be angry and be honest and be on the charts just like the men. Its raw and real, we deserve to scream too. There wouldn't be bands like Kittie and Butcher Babies screaming and metal af without Alanis.
There were other women that did it years and even decades before... still one of my favorite albums ever, but please, history in music is really important when it comes to statements like that. Even in this album, to me she has a "much" better, and overall more relevant, song: "All I Really Want". That intro song alone, condenses and dissects everything you're about to ear during the entire album, and it is a brilliant song... not to mention one of the best " 3-failed-best-pushed-over-the-top" moments in recorded musical history... 3 or 4 "failed notes" (yet genius, considering the entire flow of the song), can be everyone's else joy to the ears.
Jesper Jansen um yeah the reason it’s feminist isn’t because she’s hurt it’s because she’s being honest about her pain and anger and saying what she has to say. Smh all these men all upset over a 90s song 😂
I don't care what anybody says. But, Alanis was the $hit back in the days! LOL Edgy, raw, emotions, great singer. She can mix pop, rock, r&B, a lil hip hop sound to it. She's good. Good videos from her back in the '90s. Pretty lady, too.
I'm a rock guy, and Alanis is dope. She literally was one the first women in the 90s who changed the course for women, not just in music either. Keep in mind the sound/lyrics were not expected or accept ( at the time it dropped) from women in the early 90s.
Back in the day, PJ harvey, courtney love, Dolores o' Riordan, Gwen Stefani, Shirley manson, Kim Gordon, they did a great job too. JLP is definitely one of the best albums ever, well written, great concept, sounds amazing til this day!
great video, though i wouldn't say she's bashing all men, she's letting out her anger for one man who hurt her. I think this song could be an anthem for any person who's been hurt in a relationship, regardless of gender.
A true artist. She had a smash hit with this album but didn't get comfortable for a second, changed her sound up and kept rolling on her path. She never found the same mainstream success again, but she has consistantly put out great albums.
zetaboy33 she did with Under Rug Swept, it went #1 in 14 countries and her first single, Hands Clean hit the chart pop, rock, alternative rock, adult contemporary... and won the Juno for Album of the Year and best Production for Hands Clean, So Unsexy and Precious Illusions.
Little fun fact.. The band performing the music here is some of the best musicians in music. Matt Laug who played with Alice Cooper and Slashs Snakepit is on drums Dave Navarro who played with Janes Addiction and RHCP, played guitar Flea from RHCP on bass
"Where is she now?" "Oh, idk, maybe in jail" 🤣😂 She's living a quiet and peaceful life with her husband some rapper I've never heard of Souleye, they have 3 kids. He doesn't give her reasons to write songs like this anymore 😉🥰🤩
I don’t remember his real name but her husband graduated from Tantasqua Regional HS in MA, the same small school as my stepdaughter. I always wondered how the heck they might have met.
Alanis is my girl. The 'scratch my nails down someone else's back' is about her having an orgasm with someone else - she hopes he feels bad about what he is missing out on. Another good classic from her is "Uninvited" You can hear the anger in that one, while she re,ains calm through the whole thing. (Also being in a minor key makes it feel dark).
That's not really an "anger" song as much as it's a tension song: a guy is relentlessly pursuing her and as much as she wants to resist, she discovers she can't. But yes, definitely a classic.
I saw her live. She sounded exactly the same live a few years ago. She does the same odd body movements too. I think she still makes music and tours sometimes. She also made an appearance in the movie Dogma. You should do more early 90s alt. I think you'd like most of it.
Here are the musicians on this track. It's no wonder that it is a standout on this very popular album. It's a weird nexus of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jane's Addiction, and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Now it is just beats with people making sounds for lyrics lol thank you for bringing a different approach to the music thing! Love your channel gentlemen!
I have never, ever listened to this song like this. The CD is in my collection since 1996 and this is the first time I really "listened" to the lyrics. Thank you guys!!
Go to the very last song on her album jagged little pill and let it play past the end and theres a hidden track. Best song on the album. total acapella. Haunting.
The thing is, whether or not it's a woman singing it for other women, it applies to every gender. Oh that verse that's filled with petty passive aggression: Everyone is that person. There are so many blokes who have been there and done that, that it doesn't bear thinking about. As men we're supposed to be all fucking mechanical logic machines: bollocks. Whether it shows or not, some of the thoughts that have gone through this woman's head, have gone through every bloke's head too.
IndustrialBonecraft well said (if I’m understanding you correctly). I hate the preconception that men ain’t supposed to feel emotion. Men can be hurt, angry, cry. It doesn’t make them any less of a man. In fact, it makes them more of a man if they can stop being a wuss bag and actually own their emotions.
I am a guy and I could relate to her emotions in this song and that's why it spoke to me when it came out. Everybody can relate to feeling anger about a previous relationship where the other person unloaded their issues on you and then just bailed. I think it happens to men and women alike.
I saw Alanis in concert at the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg a few years ago. She still sounds absolutely AMAZING!!!! It was an acoustic concert and she spoke with the audience in between songs. She sounded very happy with the place she was at in her life. Jagged Little Pill - the song and the album - were about the demise of the relationship she had just been in with an older, famous man (aka Dave Coulier aka Uncle Joey on Full House - she was around 18 and he was around 33 when they started dating). Alanis is now 45, happily married, and pregnant with her 3rd child - www.self.com/story/alanis-morissette/amp
You guys are so contagious to watch ❤... very heart felt and love the honest opinions .. at least 2 hours a day I'm with you two. Thank you for explaining the meanings behind songs love every type of music its truly all a story and you two kill it! Love from Alabama
Alanis Morissette is so awesome! In addition to being a major and important pioneer in music, Jagged Little Pill alone cemented her status as one of the greatest from the 90s(dare to say all time) and changed the course for future female musicians.
Didn't expect Alanis Morissette defiantly came outta left field lol. But you can hear the conviction in her lyrics, like goddamn the the things she was saying had me thinking the person this song was directed towards better dip as far as he can to outer space like that Key & Peele skit "And I said.... Biiiiitchhh" great reaction/review Lost In Vegas now I expect the unexpected.
Pretty sure the song is about Uncle Joey from Full House. They dated and he has stated the lyrics are very close to home. They broke up cause she decided she was too young for a family and he wanted a family. She's never confirmed the name though.
Beautiful description of how the music represents the emotion when she snaps, then the break is her getting her composure back. Awesome. Now check out "Last to Speak" by Allen Stone
I'm a straight dude.. And she still sings of my experience. I love Alanis' song. This song helped me deal with 'basic training' in 1995. Free thinker here, I thought I was alone. p.s. Left Eye could my house and Jordan's... umm...lol?
Big respect to you guys being open enough to listen to and value such diverse musical genres. Love it! That's why I immediately subscribed. You're also incredibly funny😂👌🏾
the take that you guys took with the song building and the quiet part being "her getting her bearings back" is a hell of a way to think of that. never thought of that before. nicely done, fellers!
This is another one that reminds me of Fiona Apple. I'm not sure I've ever heard more emotion in a song than when she hits me with her lyrics. Shadowboxer from her comes to mind.
What I like...and why I watch so many of yalls videos...you seem honest. I like that you call out if you've heard a song or not, and not just try to front that you've never heard a single song ever.
This channel is so cool. I'm a metal head and probably wouldn't be able to make an unbiased review of some of the hip hop songs out there. Please I mean no disrespect. I'm just trying to say that what you guys do is great! I'd like to give you a suggestion for the channel. You could enrich the videos with more information about the artist you guys are reviewing at the moment. Some curious thing about the band, or maybe the song you guys are talking about. For example, did you know that Red Hot Chili Peppers' Flea played bass on this song? Just a suggestion. The channel is great. Videos are cool and funny. Keep it up!
Hey, fellow metalhead. \m/ If you're interested, check out the song "Whales" by Hail Mary Mallon. It's a really good hip-hop song. I think it's good to keep our ears open.
Dude! Our boyz don't have to provide fun facts. If you didn't notice, YOU just did. We're a community brah. Pretty awesome, huh? All thanks to Lost in Vegas for bringing us together.
yeah, this was an incredibly well-recorded and well-produced album. there was a vinyl re-issue form a few years back that is mind blowing. still a dope song, psycho or not.
I instantly fell in love with this song when it first came out. Way back in jr high. But then fast forward junior yr of hs when i had my first real heartbreak and boy oh boy did I listen to this religiously along with Gloria Gaynor's I Will Survive (yea i kniw typical right 😅), Hole's Doll Parts & Violet and of course a whole lot of Mary J Blige
This song is on an another level. The lyrics, the directiveness, the irony, the rawness. Incredibly written, just another level of writing... Honestly. Excellent writing!!!!!
“Every time I scratch my nails down someone else’s back I hope you feel it”
One of the greatest lyrics ever in music
Scariest line ever in music
Why are you scratching someones back? Is it itchy? What if they want to scratch your back?
Why would he care? He ditched you bitch lol...And why would he think about your skank ass with the dime he's with now?
WELL CAN YOU FEEL IT?
dang witches!!!

This is the best angry woman song ever! Jagged Little Pill one of the top rock albums ever...belongs in every music collection.
I give her such amazing credit for revealing her raw emotions and feelings; she bared her complete and utter soul and she left nothing on the table. I was going to make the same comment. Flea is awesome!!
And was it Taylor Hawkins on drums? I know he toured with her.
Holy shit... did not know that.. great intel!
Hawkins played drums on the tour that followed the release of the song, but he wasn't the drummer in the studio -- that was Matt Laug.

Haunting.
WORD!!
It's absolute perfection!
Or you can youtube "your house"
Workin' All Night Mary Jane acoustic is outstanding
Yessss
Lolol yall crack me up!!! This one was the best of review/reaction!
Jagged Little Pill was one of those albums EVERYONE had, no matter your “normal” genre. It’s that good.
Truth
You guys are awesome! She was 🔥 back in the day!
Still 🔥
I saw her in the 90s,she rocked it out.🤘
The thing is, whether or not it's a woman singing it for other women, it applies to every gender.
Good point.
IndustrialBonecraft Amazing comment!! 💯🔥
Holy shit man this is too damn good. Your reaction to this is too perfect. I found this channel way too late!
Great song. Remember when this came out. Everybody thought this was great back in the day.
I love her music! Ironic is my favorite song by her❤️. Nice review
Sending love from Mississippi, y'all are amazing!! It's so interesting seeing how we look from another perspective. Keep on keeping on!
Alanis Morissette is so awesome! In addition to being a major and important pioneer in music, Jagged Little Pill alone cemented her status as one of the greatest from the 90s(dare to say all time) and changed the course for future female musicians.
I love this song. Alanis acts crazy, and it's fucking hilarious. She is one woman with a lot of angst.
Yessir! Thanks Nate!
If I remember correctly she said that this song came from a real experience. Her voice and lyrics verify that.
Pretty sure the song is about Uncle Joey from Full House. They dated and he has stated the lyrics are very close to home. They broke up cause she decided she was too young for a family and he wanted a family. She's never confirmed the name though.
The soundtrack of my freshman year was this album. ❤️
Me too! Takes me right back to the dorm room and my bitchy roommate, lol.
Same!
I named my daughter after Alanis , I love this album !
Hey that's cool!
That is so cool.
I hope your daughter doesn't get treated like garbage.
@@jerb963 "Garbage" is a very popular band with a string of great hit songs. So ... what would be so bad about being treated like "Garbage"? LoL ;) :P
@@deejayturtle 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 loved how you added Garbage is a band 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
OMG, when this song came out I was a cohost of a rock station morning show, and this song was IT!
Thank you. You just reminded me that I love that album ... need to dig out out
Beautiful description of how the music represents the emotion when she snaps, then the break is her getting her composure back. Awesome. Now check out "Last to Speak" by Allen Stone
Thanks Patrick!
I'm a straight dude.. And she still sings of my experience. I love Alanis' song. This song helped me deal with 'basic training' in 1995. Free thinker here, I thought I was alone. p.s. Left Eye could my house and Jordan's... umm...lol?
I've been a big fan for a long while now I can pull up any video y'all do and enjoy it keep up the good work felis
Y'all are freaking awesome. Love your videos. Love your breakdown of barriers and music from all genres. Keep it up.
We need to talk about Flea's bassline front and center.
michael malosky jr and Taylor Hawkin’s beat🔥
I've heard that Flea heard the original bass part... said it was weak, then dropped the funk bomb on it.
@@catherinelynnfraser2001 Taylor is not on the recording.
That bassline: Flea ripps this song apart!! What a hero❤
Every woman has played this one a time or two in her life!!!
This song was is about Dave Coulier from Full House (uncle joey).
try cranberries: zombie
yeah!
Yes!
R.i.p.
Along those lines, something by Garbage would be cool
Pleeeese yes
This is another one that reminds me of Fiona Apple. I'm not sure I've ever heard more emotion in a song than when she hits me with her lyrics. Shadowboxer from her comes to mind.
I still put her stuff on now and then, and yeah, I agree with you there Luis.
Love the first 2 Fiona cd's ! And I'm a metal head . Great emotion !
Tidal is good from the first to the last track!
It really is James. I still put it on now and then and just marvel at the power and fragility in her voice.
Not About Love is one of my favorites lately, as well as Parting Gift
What I like...and why I watch so many of yalls videos...you seem honest. I like that you call out if you've heard a song or not, and not just try to front that you've never heard a single song ever.
Great song!!!! I love watching y'alls reactions! Much love to you guys!!
This is one of my favorite female angsty songs and I still listen to it. Its great. For more angst that sounds good - Hole - Violet
I think it's good to keep our ears open.
wow I had no idea Flea played on this track! thats awesome
This is such a great comment. Much respect
Dude! Our boyz don't have to provide fun facts. If you didn't notice, YOU just did. We're a community brah. Pretty awesome, huh? All thanks to Lost in Vegas for bringing us together.
@@chadcassidy1580 great point
“Ironic” is another good song of hers with lyrics that are fun to sing.
She was also 20 YEARS OLD when she recorded this. She experienced this in her teens, so this is just raw emotion at its fiery peak.
Love it! FREE THINKERS! Blessings..
yeah, this was an incredibly well-recorded and well-produced album. there was a vinyl re-issue form a few years back that is mind blowing. still a dope song, psycho or not.
I didn't even know I remembered the words 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I'm about to play her and Tori Amos tonight 🤣🤣🤣
Yeah you were going through it lol. Great feedback. Thanks for watching!
I'm late to your party, just now catching up on your old stuff. This was one of the very best reaction vids I've seen. Thanks.
Oh man...that was fun! I love Alanis! I'm glad you guys had so much fun with it...lol.
She just announced a tour for the 25th anniversary of the release of Jagged Little Pill!
"I want you to know, that I'm happy for you."
"...which means she's not." ( Laughter)
That's my favorite part! Lmao!
I tweeted the link to this reaction to Alanis, who knows you may get a message. Your reactions are so funny.
Awesome
Just watched literally ten of these in a row. Very intelligent likable fellas. Will def recommend these dudes to anyone
This song is on an another level. The lyrics, the directiveness, the irony, the rawness. Incredibly written, just another level of writing... Honestly. Excellent writing!!!!!
