Adapters like this exist since lighting came out , even on 32 pin old connector you could buy from apple adapter to sd card or usb. Feature iphone write some to usb was add in 10 or 11ios(correct me if i am wrong) its existing for long time
Does it matter what format your USB or SSD is in? Or would you need to partition your SSD and format one of the partitions for Mac so it will work with iPhones and MacBooks when connected?
Don’t waste your money, get a lightening to sd card reader it will work all the time compared to this scam. APPLE Lightening to usb adapters are a scam. They don’t work with ssd’s and bigger drives unless you have a external power source and even then that barely works for me

I tried this with my iPhone 14 and plugged the card reader with a micro sd card stuck in it and then went to files. Hit search for SD card and found nothing. Now it has some download thing on there that won’t go away.
You would have to use an accessory like this. On the side it has a port for lightning cable to supply additional power for the SSD to operate. If you get either USB-A to USB-C converter or this adapter with USB-C port instead you could do it (either way will need the power port)
Now plug into a computer, copy a file and paste it into a file on the phone. Then go in the phone try to find the folder it's in. Or save a file plug it into a PC and find it lol. Freaking hundreds of oddly named folders. And if the file isn't supported by any native app good luck.

Prob the format of your hard drive could be wrong format. So it won’t work unless you reformat it is my guess. Find out what format works. But reformatting deletes everything on drive so move stuff off drive format it and then try or get another drive.

The lightning port is limited to usb 2.0 speed. Which is 480mbs.

The problem is you can not directly drag and drop photos to anybody external drive you have to save all photos to files and that takes phone storage

It won't charge the iPhone, it is only to supply power to the USB device.
