Thank you. I hope to not need it. I found a GM Bulletin online 29400-01; special coverage -Diesel Emissions Fluid Tank Reservoir -2013-2015 Chevrolet & GMC. It addresses a MIL caused by an offset in the temperature sensor in the diesel emissions reduction tank (DEF) reservoir or increased DEF tank heater resistance. This special coverage covers this condition for 10 years or 120,000 miles per the bulletin. Hope for it to be covered by this, if not I’ll pay the $150 diagnostic fee and change it out myself. Thanks again.
I hope they get you covered. I read about that too but this truck although it’s a ‘16 is already at 180,000. I probably should have included the bulletin in the video. Thanks for watching.
Anyone know if this special coverage includes a "regen" that the dealership will have to do after the repair? They are telling me that even though my truck has 49k miles and looks like the repair is covered, I would still have to pay them over $200 to do this necessary regen? Any thoughts?
My 2015 went into limpmode and I had it serviced and have the heater replaced. My mechanic reset the check engine codes and the light is off but it is still in limpmode. Any ideas how to get it out?
Thanks just changed out my heater with this video. I have a 2015 and the torq screws for the straps was not t-30 it was t-40 for my truck and stripped one out caused some pain but got it fixed.
Great video! I followed this a few weeks back to replace mine, but this week my dash started warning me that I only had 250 miles left, then dropped quickly to 130, then just said speed reduction soon, all in about a 40 mile drive which was the longest drive I've taken since I fixed it. I pulled over and added 2.5 gallons to the tank. The speed reduction warning (though never actually reduced) never went away after a week and many starts/drives. So I got another 2.5 gallons and started to fill it up again just in case. About a gallon went in before I heard it leaking all over the shop floor. It was pouring out the top of the tank heater, not at the filler. I immediately cleaned up and dropped the tank. The only thing I could find was a small amount of crystalization (must have been another time) around that small nipple on the pump, after taking the pump off. I noticed that little nipple is shorter than the longer one. The last time I replaced this, I just dropped the smaller oring down into the hole, but it goes down a ways. I don't think it is sealing at all. Off tomorrow to the store to find another oring. I saw someone online that put the oring on the pump first, but when I do that, it's literally impossible to get the pump to seat. The oring just gets mushed up against the pump and won't go in the hole. What a pain. I also noticed sprayed crystalization on the bottom of my exhaust pipe, no idea how it got there...guessing it was maybe splashing out down the road or something. DEF keeps on winning.
Get you s ome silicone spray and coat those Orings good. Silicone will not hurt anything like penetrating oil will. then slide it in. Reset or clear, just disconnect the negative wire on battery and turn on headlights for 5 minutes. Then connect the negative back to battery. let truck sit for about an hour and then crank it. You can also just disconnect the negative battery terminal only for about an hour then hook it back up and crank truck and gently ride it around for about 30 minutes to reset the DEF ruductant pump, sensors, etc.
I just call gm this morning, told them about the code that came up with , they told me to take it to my dealer and gm is paying for it , thanks for the info I got here , it is going to save me alot of money.

Just did one this week. I had to cut and widdle down the straps with a die grinder bc the torx bolts were so far gone. The engineers really love us mechanics.
This was a very helpful video. One thing to note, I had to replace the reductant heater pump. I was nervous that a code would need to be reset after doing so. This was not the case. I swapped it out, the entire process took less than two hours (with lunch) and was super easy all around. Code was cleared on install. The code I had was P20e8.
How much would a dealer charge to do that you think? I have a 2016 6.6 duramax says service def fluid system on the dic and it’s throttled down my speed to max 55 mph the dealer said the code says something about the def reductant heater code they’re actually diagnosing it tomorrow I told him that if they try to hit me with a large number I’m just gonna do the delete on it instead (I was being nice he understood though) is there ever an instance it could just be a code they can reset? I put 5 gallons of def in it so I know it’s full. Any advice? If I have to replace it how much you think a dealership would try to bend me over for?
Don’t forget you have to purge the pump before you place it back on the heater because if you don’t air will get in the line and cause a p20e8 code for pump low pressure then you risk the vehicle going into idle mode count down. Once in idle you will have a major pain getting out of idle mode. Trust me I am speaking from experience. Overall good video.
Severo Daniel Sr. Hi! I just had the dealership replace this under warranty, now the pump is firing off the p20e8 code! They want to replace the pump now but I think they forgot to purge. How do you purge and is there a way to see if its been done?
DEF codes at 32K and again 45K. both times replaced DEF reservoir and pump with module free due to extended 10 year/120,000 mile special warranty. 2016 LML 6.6. Don't delete the DEF.....depreciates the vehicle and no dealership wants it as a trade in.

The dealer replaced it free of charge. So you really need to ask about this before replacing the heater yourself.

@@jasonf5659 Mines doing the same thing after changing the def pump i get the service exhaust fluid and im about 92 miles from being limited to 65 mph. Was wanting to know is that a common thing after changing the def heater assembly?
How long did this operation take you? This has me wondering if I can believe that "contaminated DEF" has gelled up my heater and the mechanic really found this in the space of 2 hours in and out. I've got the P11CB and P20EE codes right now...
I would say that 2 hours is definitely average for that job. It’s essentially the same thing as changing a fuel pump. As far as gelled def heater? Not so sure but maybe check with a few GM dealers to see if they’ve had much experience with contamination. I towed an ambulance today with gas in the diesel but a GM with under hood fill is a little harder to get wrong.
Scott Merrick yes, the tool in the video is capable of getting the truck out of limp mode or forcing a re-gen. My truck never went into limp mode but I did clear the code when finished. Also if you’re under 120K miles and under 10 yrs old the stealership might cover the job under an extended service TSB. There is a link in the video description..... Thanks for watching
Yes, it’s GM# 84412924. It’s in the first 1 minute of the video. Be careful when you order. With the ongoing GM strike you want to be sure that the seller physically has the part. If they’re drop-shipping from Detroit or Flint you might not see it for a while....FYI *Also check the description of the video....GM has extended the warranty coverage of this part, link in the description.
Did they change the part number for this? When I search for 84412924, on gmpartsdirect.com, it brings up "Diesel Exhaust Fluid (Def) Pump - GM (84412924). Doesn't mention anything about the heater, just the pump. Is this really the correct part still?
Tinkering Fox Thanks man! Your video really gave me complete confidence to do this myself. I’m 2K miles over the special extended warranty and dealer wants $1100 to fix.
Couple questions before I start if you don’t mind. 1. Do I have to get the computer reset since I’m in limp mode now once the new heater is in? 2. Do I have to prime the pump once I get the new heater in? Thanks for your replies!!!
I’m not sure about the reset. I wasn’t in limp mode but I did clear the code when I finished installing it. I didn’t prime my pump but I’m not sure if that’s part of the process. I would certainly completely fill the tank when done though.

Does the Launch scan tool in the beginning of the video reset it after repairs? The one I am working on is already on the countdown to shutdown.
Do you by chance have a Part number and brand that you use in this video?
Yes, it’s GM# 84412924. It’s in the first 1 minute of the video. Be careful when you order. With the ongoing GM strike you want to be sure that the seller physically has the part. If they’re drop-shipping from Detroit or Flint you might not see it for a while....FYI
*Also check the description of the video....GM has extended the warranty coverage of this part, link in the description.
Did they change the part number for this? When I search for 84412924, on gmpartsdirect.com, it brings up "Diesel Exhaust Fluid (Def) Pump - GM (84412924). Doesn't mention anything about the heater, just the pump. Is this really the correct part still?
It’s the pump, reservoir, sender, heater & everything
Tinkering Fox Thanks man! Your video really gave me complete confidence to do this myself. I’m 2K miles over the special extended warranty and dealer wants $1100 to fix.
That sucks! I hope it goes smooth!
Did you use GM part# 84412924 for this repair?
Holy Lick yes, picked it up on eBay for $175.
Great video! We almost deleted are def system.
Thanks, check the “video description” I put a link in there to extended coverage by GM for this repair.
I’m calling the dealership right now. Thank you again!
My 2016 GMC is not covered under the vin number I gave them.
Bummer
i have a 2016 denalli duelly ...it better be covered or the dealer gets the truck through the showroom window ....lol
You mean 2011-2016 when the lml was made. FAIL.
2011 is a different system than the 2012-2016.
Great video. Thank you!
