  • I update the shifter setup in my MK3 Ford Focus RS!
    I have had the COBB Adjustable Shift Plate aka quick shift for Ford Focus RS installed in my Ford Focus RS for some time now along with a range of other shifter mods including all the solid bushings and the Likewise Thicc Boi and indeed I have been enjoying this setup and consider it pretty complete (short of replacing the entire gearbox with a sequential box or something but that would be a bit extreme for everyday road use!)
    While there is certainly nothing wrong with this setup, one thing that has happened in recent times is getting the Mini Cooper John Cooper Works F56 and upgrading its shifter to have the Forge Motorsport short shifter.
    When installing this, I just guessed the level of throw shortening as it is a slider rather than what the Cobb has which is 3 specific presets and it just so happens that what I randomly landed on was a bit shorter and chunkier than the Focus RS setup that I have.
    Initially I wasn’t sure if it was the ideal setup because it made the mechanical chunk of the Mini JCW gearbox very aparrent but over time I have realised that I like it more than what I have in the Focus RS, in particular in that I feel I am shifting faster which is something that I try to replicate in the Focus RS in this video!
    Made from 6061 T6 Anodized Aluminum Black with Laser Etched COBB logo, it is very light weight, strong and really looks cool while it also shortens the gear shift throw by 20%, 30% or 40% and all this time I have had it on 30% so now I am setting it to 40% to see what improvements this brings in terms of both feel and shift speed!
    I am not expecting the exact same chunky experience that the Forge Motorsport in the Mini JCW has, that is a feature of the Mini BMW gearbox, but a shorter throw with the Cobb in the RS will give quicker, more precise gear changes as well as enhancing the overall driving experience with a bit of weight increase due to shortening the ‘lever’ meaning more effort will be required - this is what I experienced before when I first installed the Cobb short shift plate into my Ford Focus RS MK3 and selecting the 30% reduction in throw.
    All of this should be pretty easy and fast to get done, a process I show you before hitting the road for a quick review and with out spoiling the specifics, I am very happy with the upgrade!
    All that needs to be done is to pull the Focus RS air box and then we have full access to the Cobb short shift plate. At that point it just needs the cable end popped off and then we unbolt the ball end from the 30% and then bolt it into the 40% using a 10mm spanner /wrench and a drop of blue thread locker and then put cable back on with a bit of grease before re-installing the air box - easy, fast and effective!
    I also reset the neutral position for completeness which I also show - also a super quick and easy thing to do!
    Returning to stock (if you should want or need to) is just as quick and easy!

    'Mechanical chunk' is my new favourite technical term and I'm gonna try and use it at least twice a day. Great vid.

    Hey. Great video. I sense that as much as you absolutely love and have loved your RS, you are maybe getting to the end of the road with the car? That’s not through any lack of enthusiasm or anything that is showing in your videos, it’s more just where you are at with the mods. Do you have any plans to change car this year?

    Are you still on the 40% after all these years? If so have you ran into any issues?

    Not sure if you've seen but ford themselves offer a short shifter for the focus (on the ford website, but a fair chunk of money to buy). Haven't seen much at all about these and not sure if the RS came with this stock but might be worth looking into if you want to improve even further.

      Would recommend a boomba bar and a Cobb plate, around same money for more reduction and customization.

    Have you the std Ford batter back in?

    • @AdamRainey
      @AdamRainey  2 года назад +1

      Hi Mark, yes, I haven't been driving it regularly enough to keep the small battery charged with enough juice to be confident that it would even turn over and I don't have a battery conditioner etc
