  • It is time for my final lap of the Nurburgring!
After a mega journey from Northern Ireland to Germany and spending several days here in beautiful Nurbug, soaking in the sights, smells and sounds of this amazing mecca for motor enthusiasts, the trip is coming to an end - and this means doing my last tour of the Nordschleife!
As I rolled along the road leading to the entrance of the ring for touristenfahrten, it became clear that something was not normal / as expected. There was a big queue of cars both on the road and on the track leading to the exit, which you can see along side the road.
I could also see that there were flashing yellow lights which represent a caution flag on track so something had for sure happened on track that was not so good. We had thought that coming a bit late for our final tourist laps would be a good thing to avoid the rush at the start of touristenfahrten but that didn't quite work out this time!
After sitting in the non moving tail back for quite a bit of time, some folks decided to give up and leave. I asked one such chap, a very friendly dude from France, what was going on as I noticed that before he decided to leave, he had walked up to get some info.
He told me that a car had went on fire on track which caused the full course closure while it was removed and dealt with and that given the lack of time before the end of the allotted touristenfahrten time, it wasn't likely they would re-open the track for laps to be done.
So it looked like our last tours weren't going to happen unfortunately, but we decided to wait it out and see - and I'm glad we did because they got the fire cleared up well enough to let us have a go!
So here I present my last lap where I pushed more than I had during the whole trip!
I wouldn't say I was fully in tune with the whole 13 miles of the green hell - it is a very difficult track to learn inside and out - but I felt like I was getting better and better as the experience built so this lap felt decently quick!
I was held very nice and secure to the Focus RS shell seat with my FIA approved Sparco harness, performing flawlessly and really giving confidence on track (also looking awesome I must say!)
I found that going hard on the Nürburgring with the sport suspension setting on the MK3 Ford Focus RS was a bit too harsh. The bumps on the track surface made it much too intrusive and actually felt slower than normal suspension mode which I of course have fully backed up with Whiteline and the full range of Swave & Summit chassis stiffening gear so this I found was the ultimate ring setup!
There were of course the usual expected traffic both slower than me and faster than me - this time I got a few more overtakes so that was an ego boost for sure!
You get to see where the fire was in my footage - scorched earth and track as well as caution for oil so had to slow down a bit in that area but that is of course preferable to not getting out for a lap at all!
All in all I was pretty happy with the lap, I had a couple of brown pants moments - one that was my fault where I just didn't anticipate the corner correctly so took a bit too much speed into it and one weird moment where the car wanted to loose control randomly but in both cases I managed to regain control pretty quick and carry on without any real issue so all good!
It was a super fun lap and I look forward to coming back to the ring for more in the future with more prep both on the simulator to learn the track better and more car prep!
I hope you enjoyed the video series from here at the Nurburgring as much as I did!

Clutch sounds ok now. Why? Looks like the car understeer ask need more rear bar dialed in. A resident instructor would def be the next step. Car can do so much more.
