- Mercedes-AMG One Breaks Nürburgring Lap Record: 6:35.183.
Mercedes-Benz revealed Thursday its AMG One supercar has broken the lap record for production cars at the Nürburgring with a lap time of 6:35.183.
The lap was completed on October 28, according to Mercedes. It chose Nürburgring 24-Hour winner and DTM competitor Maro Engel as the driver for the attempt, which took place on a chilly autumn day where parts of the track were not completely dry. Still, the AMG One was able to defeat the former record-holder, the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series, by over eight seconds-no small gap.
“That was really an unforgettable experience,” Maro Engel said in a statement. “I didn’t expect that we would be able to set such a lap time with these track conditions. In some crucial areas of the track, it hadn’t dried completely yet and was therefore tricky. That was a special challenge. We tried to find the optimal deployment strategy during the pre-tests. Like Lewis Hamilton and George Russell on their race weekends, I also had to deploy the electrical energy of the hybrid drive in the best possible way. That’s not easy, especially with this length of track. In addition, the DRS function had to be used optimally."
The AMG One is as close to a modern Formula 1 car you can get for the road. Underneath the body sits a drivetrain derived from the one found in the company's F1 cars. That means a mid-mounted, 11,000-rpm turbocharged V-6 engine paired to an electric motor, sending power to the rear wheels via a seven-speed sequential transmission and a limited-slip differential. There are also two 120-kW electric motors up front, one for each wheel. And don't forget about all the active aero bits along the body.
It's worth mentioning the AMG One's lap was recorded based on the Nürburgring's new style of measuring lap times. The traditional track layout, used prior to 2021, had cars entering and exiting the track at different places, omitting the small straight that comes after Turn 13. Under the Nürburgring's new "official" method of recording lap times, which uses a single start/finish line and includes that small straight, the AMG One set a 6:35 lap time. If you were to go by the old method of recording times, the car would've set a 6:30.705 lap time.

Road legal being semantics really. But a great car nonetheless!
This is a Formula 1 car.
The 919 is just on another level. That record made history. The only car that can potentially attack that record is the McMurtry Spéirling.

The driver looks so relaxed, composed. Not having to fight the car much at all. That's the mark of a great chassis + suspension.
Not to mention the complete lack of tour buses , BMWs with five yahoos all pointing in different directions and Fiats all trying to navigate the wavy sections at once .
Costs like an F1… 😁

That driver is Maro Engel, long-time Mercedes-AMG factory driver, FIA GT World Cup Champion, Nürburgring 24 hour winner, DTM race winner, Suzuka 10h winner, Macau GT Cup winner. That also is a mark why the cars works that good.
The fact that you can see how wet the roads were make this more impressive. I would love to see another run with optimal conditions.
But when it have rain,the air are cooler and have more oxygen for the engine and it brings more power the cool air! The tires go not so fast to hot,and the akku have not so high hot problems, when the rest part wet street is not in curve,its no problem for the grip! On a hot summer day he cant drive the recorder time!! Sorry for my bad english best wish Reiner from Germany
@@r.blacky341 I think the intercooler cools the air sufficiently to not make much difference in power. Fact is, when track is dry, the laptime will be quite a lot better. You have much better traction and any power surplus cold air may bring, is imo negligeable compared to traction gains 🙂

Definitely would love to see this thing on a dry track and in warmer conditions. Felt he lifted off from Bergwerk through Kesselchen, but still absolutely astonishing. Well done Team AMG.
Cold conditions is actually better for the engine it produces more power, so maybe there’s a trade off
@@TheMrbc74 the positive effect for cold weather making slightly more power doesnt compare to the negative effect that the cold and damp have on the tyres, little difference in power a large difference in grip

@@TheMrbc74 I'm absolutely agree with Rhys Andrew. Cold conditions makes a point may be if you're going to have drag race on a straight, but Nordschleife is a track about a lot of corners and good grip is even matter than engine power...

Not really. Gt2rs is a supercar. This is a hypercar. Their not in the same league.
@@D4rk34g7e comparing the lap times, they are not THAT far apart tbh... lets wait for a possible 992 GT2 MR or some similar highend package for the current generation. Porsche is moving the bar between hypercar and "normal" sportscar at the moment...
@@Nico_GECOgg Well, the lap time with the AMG One was done in far from optimal conditions, and the AMG would be better suited for smaller GP tracks.

yes as far as laptimes go, they are comparable. on that basis we can also compare the amg with a kitcar like a radical, which is also as quick. nevertheless, one is an ultra high tech limited hypercar. the other a run of the mill gloryfied beetle and costs probably 1/10th of the mercedes.
Loving the mechanical grip of the AMG, be great to see it in action on a warm day , stunning achievement, having driven the ring in my Mitsubishi Evo 9 on a closed track you can really appreciate the double apex corners. Brilliant 👍
Your double damper pushrod suspension is genuis. No anti roll bars and so stable. Rides the bumps so well like they aren't there despite being in track mode.
The suspension, tires, and handling are so perfect you don't notice them. Braking are perfect. All driven perfect!
That is very impressive. Looked under perfect control at all times. Imagine how exciting it would be to do a lap in that thing!

I was watching closely and to me it seemed like he could have pushed it even harder through corners because he never broke tires.

This was definitely not an all-out lap. But can’t blame him, was a bit shocked when I realized the track was wet in some places. He could definitely do it faster.

Great job guys. I have been waiting to see a new record.
A lap record on this track is a monumental achievement. This is the longest and most complex track on Earth, plus it has been around for decades. If you can get good at this track, you can get good at any in the world.
You can see through the last quarter of the track, the driver had so much confidence in the car… driving without fear like he almost forgot what car he was driving and was just in complete synchronisation with it… race driver and race car in 100% mind/body connection.
Such a smooth lap and that sound is astonishing also, I’ve watched this two times over and I’m going for a third!
Aside from everything mentioned, the sound that engine makes, music to my ears, I can watch this on loop for hours.

Lotus Evija X Prototype Hypercar | 6:24.047 . That had about 2000HP. Those hyper cars really are. AMG Black did close to that for fraction of the cost but damn, engineering masterclass.

This gives good context to Stefan Bellof's 1983 6:11 record time. Yes, the track was shorter. However, there were some 35 other cars on the track at the time. It was a practice lap. The Porsche 956 he was driving was a race car, but not nearly as planted as today's cars are. Truly incredible lap from Bellof.
It was the car, not the driver. Its the fact that Porsche makes incredible cars, not that Bellof drove an incredible lap.

I agree, in places I was thinking yeah that the lot, then I started watching closer and thought I wonder how much time he has in the car or perhaps it was the weather, it was a great lap but there is quite a lot more to had from him and the car.
Nice one, sector 3 could've been better ( there was a huge lift up) I think one a good summer day it would go even faster, otherwise one of a drive, quite crazy how he sents it in sector 1,2 , actually the whole drive is crazy, before the last corner, that scary slide 😳

T50 with proper rubber would be insanely quick.
If that happened with a fearless and VERY competent driver it would easily be the new king of the ring. Suction cars are notorious for flinging the car off the road when they lose suction (ie a whole lot of the ring with its bumps and jumps). Driver would need a whole other car to carry his massive sac.
Why T.50? Aston-Martin Valkyrie is much faster!😏

That is beyond doubt the most ferocious sounding V6 I've ever heard in my life. I wish my F150 had that engine.
No you dont, unless you have specialised crew to maintain this and money for replacing engine after few runs. This is F1 engine its not worth until you are bilionare. There are tons of better engines, that you can go off track and even drive daily, with not so much less performance and without service for every run.
Needs a full engine rebuikd after 50 000km
Check out 1986 V6 F1 engines or 1996 V6 Class-1 touring car engines then, which weren't neutered like today's F1 engines.

I love this track. I believe this track was on Gran Turismo and you've gotta love the complexity.... Such a cool driver, he did so well to keep on it and never got squirrelly.

Amg would still have it based on its aero profile. The jesko looks like it would be sloppy through some corners given that its main draw is top speed.

@@ReaperStrain006 The Jesko (I leave out the Attack part cos it's the dumbest name in all of existence to call a car) is a track-focused hypercar. It was built for downforce and speedy corners. So I think that car does stand a chance with the right driver and the right conditions. The Jesko Absolut is the straight line demon. Also, apparently, a GT because of the suspension setup. I think the Jesko stands a chance because I think it will be a lot faster than the AMG ONE in terms of acceleration. I love both brands so I don't really care.

There are many different categories, such as electric vehicles, hybrid cars, suv's...seems like you do not really know much about the Nordschleife timings :)
@@YTDE426 i’m quite aware of what production/street legal means my opinion is it doesn’t matter, they only made a couple hundred of those cars and they only make them so that they can legally say it’s a production vehicle that broke some record or did some event. Definitely a crazy technical achievement. However, street legal sounds a bit like a joke considering that the technology behind it is so terribly delicate (at least when top gear wanted to drive it, they tried all day) and they are happy when it actually works properly. You‘ll basically need a whole F1 box crew with you at all times…

How is a stretch to call it street legal? It's 100% street legal and has a production run. So what if it's delicate. Almost every supercar north of 250k dollars is delicate.
If it´s street legal in Germany, it´s as street legal as a car can get. And the cars (not the test cars) that they delivered to the customers are completely reliable.

It broke the fastest production car record. The Porsche evo isn’t a production car as Porsche doesn’t manufacture them for sale to costumers.

I've heard it slurs it's shifts (they're not fast) and uses electricity to fill the gap so you'd never notice.
