"I Love Rock n Roll" the story: When Joan Jett was in her first band the Runaways (all teenage girl punk/metal influenced band) they toured London, England. The Arrows, in England, used this song as a "B-side" song to one of their hits and when Joan heard it she INSTANTLY wanted to do a cover of it on the 2nd Runaways album. However, since the Runaways already did a cover with "Rock n Roll" in the title on the first album in 1976 (Lou Reed's "Rock n Roll"), the girls didn't want to have another song with "Rock n Roll" in the title and look "cheesy" so Joan held onto the song for a bit. Once the Runaways broke up and Joan started to pursue a solo career she originally recorded this song (as well as another one) w/ Steve Jones and Paul Cook of the Sex Pistols (another English Punk Rock group). When Joan formed the Blackhearts in 1980 (after she released her first solo record as just "Joan Jett" later renamed "Bad Reputation") her manager thought it was a good idea to RE record the song w/ the Blackhearts and make it a stronger and less "Sophomoric" sounding and THIS is the result. As I posted below, the song went to #1 on the Billboard chart for 8 weeks in a row!!!
Thanks for the history lesson... First hand take...Met and hung out with the Runaways before they became famous. They opened up for my friends band a couple times & being I had a truck I would help haul set up, brake down & my ears were used for the sound check., nope not a roadie just helping my friends. They were cool girls easy on the eyes & not bad at their craft. Being they were the first all girl rock band, it was only about 6 months later that they went big time. Lita Ford & Joan Jet came out of the Runaways, Lita's big song was with Ozzie, "If I close my eyes forever" ... That song is reaction worthy.
Also Aretha Franklin and George Michael doing KNEW YOU WERE WAITING. Interesting note, Otis Redding who you reacted to ( Dock of the Bay) wrote the song RESPECT. Also a great suggestion.
Back in '82, I was in Florida at a bar, and when this came on, the entire bar stopped in their tracks and started just belting this out!! So much fun!!🎶💜🎵
You want a rock chick the closet to Joan, it would be Alannah Myles, her biggest hit was Black Velvet (which is a song written about Elvis) internationally. She had many hits at home in Canada..Love Is, Lover of Mine, but you should listen to Still Got This Thing (for you). If you want someone harder than Joan try Darby Mills lead singer of the Headpins. Don't It Make You Feel (like dancing), Just One More Time, Staying All Night, Breaking Down. They have her live from Germany here on RUclips. In Fact Canada has a lot of amazing Rocks chick, Sass Jordan, Lisa Dalbello - who later just went by Dalbello. Holly Woods of the group Toronto, Lee Arron, Jane Child etc..
lol... I was gonna mention that too. Good movie. No clue how accurate it is, but it is a good movie. It isn't specific about Joan Jett, it's more about the overall relationship between all the girls in the band and what not, but you do get some decent Joan Jett stuff.
@@ar47yrr4p Joan was executive producer on the movie and it was based on Cherie Currie's book "Neon Angel" To anyone who says that Kristen Stewart can't act, "The Runaways" is one of the ones I throw out as an example of a good performance by her
My hubby was at her concert, people were throwing a ball around and Joan motioned for it to be thrown to her, my husband had just caught it, and tossed it to her. She caught it and winked at him. Made a great story.❤ Joan Jet winked at me!😂

I'm a musician and I have found Lita Ford in her solo career to be the hardest rocking female! In the early days Joan Jett and Lita Ford were in an all female band called the Runaways!
I was 11 years old when this came out and have been singing along ever since! Take a listen to Cherry Bomb by The Runaways. Five super rocking women including Joan Jett.
Hard rocker comparable to Joan: Lita Ford. Her, Joan and a couple other girls started “The Runaways” band in their teens. Lita does a duo with Ozzy that’s cool, “Close my Eyes Forever” if you want to cover that midweek or she has a solo “Shot of Poison” that’s nice.
I'm so glad you finally got to this song. I'm alot older than you both, but I was in high school when I first heard it. This song changed the entire rock genre and it was on every radio station all the time. Joan Jett is a Rock And Roll Hall of Famer!
Yes. Somewhere on here is a vid of the sisters band she was in, The Pleasure Seekers. Over the top crazy stuff. I actually liked them better than the management-planned band and relatively tame lyrics the British starmakers gave her (she's originally American, but became famous in the UK first). Still. Suzy is the quintessential tough girl rockstar.
Lita Ford...had solo hits "Kiss me deadly" and a huge duet "Close my eyes"with Ozzy. Lizzy Hale from Halesrorm Amy Lee from Evenesence VIXEN Baby Metal Pat Benetar...many hits

Actually there are other girls in the business, but most of them are into demonic Metal. I say demonic because what else would you call it when they growl like the spawns of Satan. The only girl band that I know of currently that basically does just Rock & Roll are Japanese. Most of what Band Maid does is sung in Japanese, some of it is in English, but make no mistake, they are 5 girls that bring it. They’ve got a huge following and it’s growing. US tours usually get sold out and the Europeans love them. Listen to Onset for starters, it’s one of my favorites. 😎 I almost forgot Floor Jansen from Nightwish.
Nightwish Sister Shotgun Within Temptation Kontrust The Dirty Youth Halestorm Tarja Turunen (1st lead singer of Nightwish) The Pretty Reckless Lacy Sturm (former lead singer of Flyleaf, has done collaborations with both Breaking Benjamin and Apocolyptica that I know of) We Are the Fallen Band Maid Lovebites The Nearly Deads Icon for Hire These are just some of the recent female fronted hard rock/metal bands (or solo singers) that I know of (and there are a LOT more in Europe, Japan, and can be found on the internet here in the States if you look for them). Not sure what you've been listening to, but it sure sounds like just a regular "pop"/top 40 radio station (which at least as far back as the 80s, haven't exactly been known for anything hard or edgy; you typically get stuff like Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Backstreet Boys, and so on).
@@heavybrett-al4082 I would say there are actually far more (and more talented) female singers and musicians right now then there ever were in the past (and I'm almost 50, so I've been around to hear most of those times). No disrespect to anyone who came before, but it's definitely a better time for people to hear and learn music (and especially to create their own) than at any time before now, so relatively speaking, it's far easier to find those diamonds in this musical generation compared to previous ones (especially since in the past, if you weren't one of the miniscule percentage of artists lucky enough to get a recording contract, it was almost impossible to either become known, or even just stay in the music business). It's just a matter of time and energy to find something you can appreciate.
I would also say that no matter the era, the majority of musicians tended to follow the easy money (i.e. make whatever trash the recording studios pushed you to do), rather than take a stand and make what they want just because they lived what they were doing (and risk losing your contract and capability to support yourself). Only those who had either some means of self sufficiency (or managed to make it so big so quickly that no one could tue them down) would have the capability to completely resist any pressure from the recording labels, so I can understand the plight, but feel it's a great shame to lose so many talents in the past to mediocrity (not necessarily sales-wise, but in loss of creativity).
Back in the day, as they say, when this came out, I thought, wow, this girl has got it. I was not used to such a powerful female performer and at first taken aback. The group Heart had a power, but not like that. But, yeah, I love this song and I love her music. Glad you liked it and your comments were thoughtful.
I remember everyone saying she' didn't change the lyrics cuze she's a tough rocker that doesn't give a F. Well.. turns out she's gay and decided to keep the song about a woman :)
Hard female rockers of today: In This Moment (Big Bad Wolf), Halestorm - which you've touched on, but there's so much more, and Butcher Babies (Yorktown) - ALSO Great reaction. Been in love with Joan Jett since I saw her come out with this song on MTV (yes I'm that old)!

I love Joan Jett. Her early career started with a "Girl Band", The Runaways, which was totally pop. She has influenced us all much more when she broke away from the "Girl Band".
The Runaways may have been a manufactured band, but I'd say it's kind of unfair to say they were totally pop. It makes it seem like they were the Spice Girls or something.
Joan loved British glam rock back in the early-mid seventies. This is a cover of a song by Arrows. I think it was their only hit in the UK. It wasn't Joan's only hit by a long stretch, of course.
Joan loves Hard ROCK, the designers dressed our FEMALE "hard rockers" up [no.Cal here] just for video's because MTV literally JUST came out & they wanted to "Represent". I think yur talking about softer-rock bands like Ratt, Poison & Montley Crew. Remember- even Ozzy wore make-up in the 80's & No one accuse him of being Soft.. That's how I remember it anyway ~ Rock On Brother!🧡
@@rozewest958 But before all of that, Joan and Cherie Currie and other members of of The Runaways loved the British glam (not soft) rock scene. The Sweet, Gary Glitter (long before we knew about his nasty secrets), Barry Blue and especially Suzy Quatro. Suzy was American but she came to the UK and made herself a successful career here recording a lot of hit singles. When Joan went solo in the eighties she recorded a lot of covers of songs by people in that 1970s British scene and this is one of them.

80s IS SO AWESOME
For another Female Friday you should pull up Aretha Frankin’s “Respect”
Or her duet with George Michael- I knew you were waiting
Yes, Respect!!
Also Aretha Franklin and George Michael doing KNEW YOU WERE WAITING. Interesting note, Otis Redding who you reacted to ( Dock of the Bay) wrote the song RESPECT. Also a great suggestion.
Dr. Feelgood, her cover of The Weight and Bridge over troubled water, Natural Woman…I need to stop before I just start listing her catalog 🤪
Next female Friday: Evanescence- My Immortal and Jewel- who will save your soul.
Jewel, such a unique voice.
Omg yes! Jewels “yodel” to her voice and Amy Lee’s voice are so unique and beautiful!!!!
Jewel “Foolish Games”
You have good taste in music
@@mrkinak3160 I like to think I good taste in music. I pretty much like and appreciate all genres of music.
The rockers today like Joan Jett are still named Joan Jett. She's amazing.
From that era? No, I don't think there's any female rocker that can top her. She was the real deal, through and through.
Joan, Pat Benatar and Heart were basically it for women's Rock. Lita Ford would come up into her own more mid/late 80s.
Are you that sure? Listen to Susie Quatro: ruclips.net/video/TPTsl3GQffc/видео.html
Lita Ford
Chrissie Hynde! No one better imho. She’s written SO MANY great songs.
Back in '82, I was in Florida at a bar, and when this came on, the entire bar stopped in their tracks and started just belting this out!! So much fun!!🎶💜🎵
I think that happened everywhere this song was played. 🎼🎶🎤
@@jillwklausen yes!!😁🎵🎶
If you’re going to start doing movies the Runaways must be on your list.
lol... I was gonna mention that too.
Good movie. No clue how accurate it is, but it is a good movie. It isn't specific about Joan Jett, it's more about the overall relationship between all the girls in the band and what not, but you do get some decent Joan Jett stuff.
@@ar47yrr4p I think they focused too much on Joan & Cherie.
@@ar47yrr4p Joan was executive producer on the movie and it was based on Cherie Currie's book "Neon Angel"
To anyone who says that Kristen Stewart can't act, "The Runaways" is one of the ones I throw out as an example of a good performance by her
Joan Jett is on Rolling Stone's 100 best guitarists list.
She formed "The Runaways". Thefirst Girlband ever in1975. Withher age 15
This came out in '81 and she's still the most gorgeous badass rocker!
I LOVE Joan too....
Helen Reddy..."I Am Woman" perfect song for Female Friday! Those who agree give a thumbs up!!
Hear me roar 😁
When I was a kid in the ‘70s, I had a killer Helen Reddy impression-I prided myself on sounding just like her on Delta Dawn.
@@kathyastrom1315 another great one 💗
My hubby was at her concert, people were throwing a ball around and Joan motioned for it to be thrown to her, my husband had just caught it, and tossed it to her. She caught it and winked at him.
Made a great story.❤
Joan Jet winked at me!😂
Suzi Quatro was a hard-rocker in the 1970's: 48 Crash is a definite play.
"Leather Tuscadero." Right on!
hahaha.... That was fantastic to see you guys react to "I Love Rock-n-Roll"! I love what you said about Joanie being gorgeous yet tough.... That's what hooked me WAY back in 1982 when I was a 12 year old kid. I was mesmerized so much I started a fan club and from that point on, a LOT of my life has been Joan Jett. I've seen her live in concert 152 times (since 1982) and as a matter of fact, #153 will be August 8th in Nashville, TN. Only 8 days away..... Thanks for this reaction vid. I always get a kick out of it!
Lita Ford and Joan Jett were in a group together called Runaways...Lita Ford is just as hard rockin' as Joan for sure!! Listen to Lita's "Kiss Me Deadly". She's BEAUTIFUL too!!
Female Friday suggestions :
Hole - Celebrity Skin
Lita Ford - Kiss me Deadly or Close my eyes Forever
Fiona Apple - Criminal
Good Ones! I've suggested Hole's "Doll Parts" previously, too.
Hey guys,
Another vote for "Crimson and Clover." Imo better than the original.
IMO Tommy James the ORIGGINTOR Is the NUKE
@@theodoreritola9758 Although I really dig JJ's cover of Crimson and Clover, I have to agree, Tommy James' version is my favorite...
Sorry it was a good cover but better , no

ahhh. such a great song, strong memories, brings me back to days in the 80s jamming to songs like this while roller skating at the rink.
Tina Turner is an add to female Friday. Proud Mary, We don't need another hero, What's love got to do with it.
I agree. But they need to do Proud Mary without Ike! Love her.
Completely agree 👍
Tina Turner’s You’re Simply the Best is a must!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️
Yes to all these!
I'm a musician and I have found Lita Ford in her solo career to be the hardest rocking female! In the early days Joan Jett and Lita Ford were in an all female band called the Runaways!
Yeah and they made the famous song Cherry Bomb
She is iconic!
I was 11 years old when this came out and have been singing along ever since! Take a listen to Cherry Bomb by The Runaways. Five super rocking women including Joan Jett.
Cha cha cha cha Cherry Bomb 💣 ❤❤❤
Joan Jett’s Idol is Suzie Quatro and who is still rocking it today
I was just about to suggest they watch Devil Gate Drive
@@TracyJane67 I would suggest Daytona Demon
I've been talking to a brick wall trying to get these reaction channels to react to Suzi. Her documentary, SUZI Q, is fantastic.
Leather Tuscadero!😉
Joan is still out there too
Joan is one of THE best bad ass rockers ever!! She is a powerhouse!!
Couldn't agree more. Lita Ford rules.
Lisa the tribute to her mom is a good one also
Got to add Halestorm in there.
Great choice 👌
This song definitely was an 80’s anthem! I remember rocking to this partying on weekends with all my girlfriends as we cruised town!! Lol
I'm so glad you finally got to this song. I'm alot older than you both, but I was in high school when I first heard it. This song changed the entire rock genre and it was on every radio station all the time. Joan Jett is a Rock And Roll Hall of Famer!
Guys if you love Joan Jett you MUST react to Suzy Quattro. She was Joan's inspiration to become a rock star
@@jamesredman1263 I beg to differ. She was Leather's sister on Happy Days.
Carol King is a great song writer, piano player, singer, "Your so Far Away"
Agreed. Pretty much anything from the Tapestry album would be great to react to.
If rock and roll had a "national anthem " this would be it 👌 😤 🙌 👍 🔥.
So true that!!
Lita Ford...had solo hits "Kiss me deadly" and a huge duet "Close my eyes"with Ozzy.
Lizzy Hale from Halesrorm
Amy Lee from Evenesence

The 70's and 80's was just full of great hard rocking female voices.its a shame the latest generation strive to be a Kardashian and not a rock queen!
I almost forgot Floor Jansen from Nightwish.
@@GT-mq1dx you just proved my point. What's happening in the industry now! Can't hold a candle to the yester years.but I hold out hope.

Sister Shotgun
Within Temptation

The Dirty Youth

Tarja Turunen (1st lead singer of Nightwish)
The Pretty Reckless
Lacy Sturm (former lead singer of Flyleaf, has done collaborations with both Breaking Benjamin and Apocolyptica that I know of)
We Are the Fallen
Band Maid
Lovebites
The Nearly Deads
Icon for Hire
These are just some of the recent female fronted hard rock/metal bands (or solo singers) that I know of (and there are a LOT more in Europe, Japan, and can be found on the internet here in the States if you look for them).
@@heavybrett-al4082
I would say there are actually far more (and more talented) female singers and musicians right now then there ever were in the past (and I'm almost 50, so I've been around to hear most of those times).
When she was finally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015 a whole generation yelled at the same time "About TIME!"
You guys should react to "Cherry Bomb", by Joan's first band, The Runaways.
was hoping someone would bring up the The Runaways, see how it all got started.
Back in the day, as they say, when this came out, I thought, wow, this girl has got it. I was not used to such a powerful female performer and at first taken aback. The group Heart had a power, but not like that. But, yeah, I love this song and I love her music.
Glad you liked it and your comments were thoughtful.
I was 11 when this song came out and I was like wow she’s a bad ass and from there I loved these rock ‘n’ roll chicks!
Joan was a pioneer in more ways than one. I love that she didn't change any lyrics in Tommy James and the Shondells' "Crimson and Clover."
I remember everyone saying she' didn't change the lyrics cuze she's a tough rocker that doesn't give a F. Well.. turns out she's gay and decided to keep the song about a woman :)
That was one of my favorite songs
She is an amazing performer. I fell in love with her years ago, she likes everybody which makes me love her more.

Tina Turner doesn’t get enough credit for being a rocker: Steel Claw, 1984, Might’ve Been Queen. She just killed it!

Joan Jett was in the Runaways with Lita Ford as teens in the 70's. You must check out Lita Ford. Kiss Me Deadly and Gotta Let Go then Lita's duet with Ozzy Osbourne Close My Eyes Forever
I was 12 when this song came out. I bought her album with this song and Bad Reputation album at the same time. She really changed my world.
I never considered them to be pop. More punk than pop.
They're more of a cross between Sweet and The Clash
The Runaways were not pop. Totally disagree with that assessment.
@@aaradia De gusibus non est disputandum. That's the way I thought of it back in the '70's when I was a teen.
Joan and the Blackhearts were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015!
This song transcends the 80s, it's timeless!
