Joan Jett started as rhythm guitar and songwriter for the Runaways. After that all-girl band broke up she started a solo career, as did fellow guitarist and former bandmate Lita Ford. Joan’s music, like that of AC/DC is pure rock and roll, whether a ballad or straight rocker like this one and that’s why she is one of my favorite artists. As for the jacket she did not throw it into the crowd, she threw her guitar pick. Lastly, rather than Joan Jett being like Lizzy Hale (another amazing female vocalist who also plays guitar) Lizzy is like her. Joan, along with Lita really opened the doors for ladies in rock and I for one am glad they did. P.S. If you decide to check out Lita I’d suggest the duet with Ozzy Osborn called “If I Close My Eyes”
I was one of those kids that saw maybe 100 Joan Jett & the Blackhearts shows in the 80's, followed the band as far as a kid in high school could travel and make it to school the next day. Later on, sang lead and played bass in an all female JJ&Blackhearts cover band. HUGE influence on me. Thanks for doing this one!

I have a cute story involving Joan Jett from my youth. Joan was one of the founders of The Runaways at 16 years of age. In 1978 they toured Sweden and I was at a small outside venue to see them with a friend. A bit before the gig I went behind the stage (a small venue with the dressing room behind the stage) and climbed the fence that was surrounding the stairs to the cellar. Above the fence was a small window to the dressing room, and as this was during the summer month it was open. I stuck my head inside and there they was, Joan Jett, Lita Ford, Sandy West and Vicky Blue. They all smiled at me as I said hi (the only word I could come up with in the magical moment), and Joan walked over to the window and gently caressed my cheek and at the same time gently pushed my head out with a smile and the words: - Sorry boy! I was in heaven for the rest of the night and I said to my friend that I would never wash my face again. 😊😋 I was 15 years old at the time and Joan was 19 at the moment, turning 20 later that year.
The guitar and drum intro is just one of those iconic riffs that makes the song instantly recognizable and lets you know right off the bat that something amazing is coming and it doesn't disappoint - ever!
I still remember the first time I saw Joan snarl these lyrics and her curl her lip in that leather outfit. Wowza! That was the day I became a lifelong admirer of female rockers... Joan, Pat Benatar, both Wilson Sisters, Lita Ford, right on up to Maria Brink and Floor.
@@paulmartin2348 not even close! Those are just some big names! I left a bunch off the list! Lzzy Hale. Debbie Harry. Grace Slick. Amy Lee. Dorothy Martin (IMO, anyway). And on! 😁
I saw her back in 1983. I was a little late to the show and I could hear her rocking from outside the building. Anticipation was building as I got closer to the door. She put on a great show opening for ZZ Top. 2 Hall of Fame performers. Outstanding.
Joan Jett is the total OG of women's rockers. She did the dam thing before many of others, and her music shows that rebellious attitude so well. I always enjoyed her vocals and music, not to mention she was in the Highlander tv shows, which makes her a legend.
Just saw the show in Toronto, have fun. Make sure you get there on time she started right on time, and I missed the 1st song. Alanis was really good too, enjoy
Joan Jett is a true rock and roll star. No affectations, no act, she is herself onstage and puts it all out there. In a similar way to AC/DC she stormed onto the scene with her style and it worked great, and still works. She is amazing.
3 things I hate about myself: 1) I hate that I always think the worst to myself about myself or others, (negative self speech, assuming a friend is faking being a friend, a partner is unfaithful, etc.) but I love that I am able to now steer my mind away easier from those rabbit holes and reassure myself on what is reality and what it self maleficence. 2) I hate that I don't listen to my inner voice when talking to others to either wrap it up so it is not a 5 hour conversation and that all my talking points have already been hit or when I am oversharing or info dumping and internally I am screaming at my self to STOP. TALKING. It is a thing about myself I am still tackling and trying to keep on the brighter side and laugh (where appropriate) about the funny situations caused by it. 3) I hate my heart because of the issues it has that affect me daily, that has been the hardest to try and actually put a positive spin or appreciation on.
Joan Jett has been my idol and hero since 1979. She is the living embodiment of "just no fucks to give". Her shows are 100% her and her love of Rock music. She is the original female badass of rock 'n' roll. Her cover of "dirty deeds" is amazing and in my opinion the best cover of that song. (I acknowledge I am emotionally biased lol). The lady as a lot of bangers and holds several songs on my playlists. One last thing don't hate your "baggage" it is part of the story of your life. everyone that has ever lived has had, has, and will have baggage it is how you deal with the negative that is important. You have obviously done a wonderful job of dealing, the depth of your ability to love music is definitive proof to me. Love and hugs from Canada. Keep on Rockin'
Joan Jett is a bad ass and has never changed her rock and roll roots. She is a true Rock N Roll Hall of Famer. Great Choice! You should check out the Runaways.....it was her band before she went solo.
Oh no. Let's face it, Cherie Currie was a terrible singer! I think the Runaways would have been more successful if Lita and Joan had been taking over the singing from the start. Both have much better voices. I say this as a huge fan of both Joan Jett and Lita Ford. I had most or all of the Runaways albums - import LP's from Japan. I listened to the despite Cherie's voice. I would much rather she do some Lita Ford reactions.
When Nirvana was inducted to the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, they had 4 women representing-- a different iconic singer for each song-- and Joan Jett sang lead for Smells Like Teen Spirit. Beyond iconic! I can't imagine anyone besides Kurt sing that, but she smashed it out of the park!
Blondie, Pat and Joan Jett. my music life was complete at 12 years old. This song is just a staple of any house-party songs from 1984 - today and tomorrow
My aunt was a HUGE Joan Jett fan. She very much patterned her look after a mix of Joan Jett and Elvira, lol. She was only about 10 years older than me, so she ended up being a huge influence on my taste in music (and horror movies, lol). Love Joan Jett
My sister is five years older than me and I owe my love for Joan (and Metallica, Iron Maiden and more) to her. Back in the 80s we'd listen to a lot of vinyls in her room.
@@obbekjaer heck yeah. My aunt had a waterbed and I remember distinctly lying on her bed with the music cranked up loud enough that I could feel the vibrations through it, lol.
Joan plays pure, simple Rock. Very relatable, very catchy and it just hits right. There are a number of rock bands and solo artists who just nail that kind of sound. AC/DC, Bob Seger and CCR come to mind. They aren't there to show off, they just come to kick ass and take names.
I've been watching you for several years now! I wanna thank you for being so honest and open with us. Letting us in so we could get to know you! You are an amazing person, and it's a joy to watch your channel!!!
The precursor to Joan Jett is 70's glam rocker Suzi Quatro. Hit's like Devil Gate Drive and Can the Can. Even appears as the Fonzy's girlfriend in Happy Days.
I was so fortunate to live and grow up in the 80s, in ultra conservative Salt Lake City, who just lucked out in having the most progressive radio station in the 80s. Her music was played alongside Violent Femmes, Eurythmics, Yello, Yaz, HoJo, and so many disparate others that aligned in perfection. This radio station was "disappeared" overnight TWICE, and they were able to overcome both times. In their last iteration, the DJs, including "Anita Man" 😂, managed to get together, pool their money and financing, and it was WONDERFUL! Yay KJQ!
Joan is a badass, plain and simple. She's been at it for almost 50 years now. Back in my younger days, just after The Runaways broke up, she'd play a few of the clubs along the Jersey shore. The Fountains, the Stone Pony, and a couple others. There's a good chance I came across her back then. Much of my misspent youth was spent there on weekends.
Joan!! She has been one of my favorite rockers since I was a teen - as well as her all-girl band the Runaways. She is such an icon to women all over the world. She just plays great, straight forward rock n' roll that everybody can sing along with & enjoy.
First of all, I love Joan and her path through life. She's F@#$n awesome. And since you shared, I will as well. And thank you for the honesty, really enjoy your work. I was 19 years old and a drug addict. My parents pretty much gave up on me. My sisters as well. My friends didn't but they were in their own space at the time so no can't say anything about that. My Great Aunt took me task. She was born in 1898 in a dirt floor stone house with no plumbing in the highlands of Scotland. I hate myself for not figuring things out on my own, but I will forever love Aunty for her stern guidance and her kind understanding.
Can't wait for this one!!! One of the ladies that kicked the door open for those that followed!! After her it was ok to be a lady that seriously Rocked!!
Something to add that even before being a singer, and continuously all along her career, Joan Jett have been a producer for bands. This is something you can feel in all of her songs. They are efficient, simple, but super well produced. Not like over produced, but tight, efficient and engaging.
When Joan Jett walks out on a stage, she owns it. So glad you chose to check her out, today, I've been a huge fan of hers since first hearing back in the early '80s. Definitely a rock icon. You mentioned Lzzy Hale; Halestorm actually did a wonderful cover of this song, check it out sometime, even if just for yourself. I love it when you analyze lady rockers for us. You likely forgot, so just to remind you... Within Temptation's Sharon den Adel deserves some attention. "FASTER" is the one to experience. I've listened to her sing that song hundreds of times, and I still have to remember to breathe. Incredible vocalist. As for anything I might hate myself for, I hate myself for not being one of The Blackhearts. Can you imagine a life where you're around Joan Jett on a regular basis?
Finally!!! I’m so happy you’re looking at my favorites! Check out the runaways Joan Jett was 15! When she started. It’s tragic that nobody mentions Pat Benatar I’d start with the first album she was certainly one of a kind and her husband Neil Gerrardo ( not sure of spelling) is one of the GREATEST guitar players super underrated both of them! They are still married to this day!
Agreed. Pat is an opera singer turned rocker. She’d be right up Elizabeth’s alley, but Love is a Battlefield is the wrong song choice for appreciation of her skills
Thanks for sharing Elizabeth, so excited to see your joy in listening to Joan Jett. We GenXers were a lucky bunch to have so many gifted singers to rock out with in our day.
Indeed. Having grown up from the late 60s to early 80s, I took it for granted that we'd be enthralled by every new album/single release on an almost weekly basis. Never did I suspect that we lived the age of truly iconic recordings and performances, and that the standards set by those artists wouldn't last. Not to mention the wealth of great recordings made before I was born - stuff to get lost in, from the classical to jazz, blues and rock 'n roll. Gen Z will argue that they feel the same way about Taylor Swift as I do about the heroes of my generation, but I cannot help to feel immensely grateful that I wasn't born any later.
I live in Iowa and during the Presidential nominating season, EVERYONE comes to Des Moines. In 2004, Joan was in town stumping for Howard Dean at a coffeehouse across the street from my apartment. Just Joan and her acoustic guitar in a corner of the room - not even up on a stage. I stood within arm's length - close enough to touch her. (I didn't) A favorite memory.
Thank you so much for your openness about the difficulty of loving ones self. I was having a tough day but you reminded me that I'm not alone in the struggle. Thank you
I made my mom take me to see Joan Jett sometime in the 80's against her will. 38 Special was also there. Was awesome concert and I've been a fan of hers ever since.
I saw her in concert before you were born, back in '82 along with Heart, The Teardrop Explodes and the headliner Queen. She was great, 'I Love Rock and Roll' was high in the charts back then.
One of the hardest working musicians. Been a fan sense her runaway days. Got to work a concert in 97 for her and the fabulous thunderbirds. She is such a badass. She was nice to everyone who came up to her. She is one the few that can play arenas and clubs and still put on a hell of show. Just in your face rock n roll.
You should do one on Pat Benatar … another 80s rocker that paved the way for female artists. She defined a generation of girls/women in the 80s. Also, Joan changed her look a few years ago (she’s since gone back) to be a softer version of her and she was absolutely gorgeous.
I have seen Joan Jett several times live. She is fantastic live! Sounds the same as she does in the studio. Knows how to put out quality and a great performance live! As a huge fan of hers, does she have the greatest voice in rock? No. But she has the perfect voice for the type of music she does!
Until you see Joan Jett live in concert, you don't really realize that overwhelmingly powerful voice is coming out of a fairly small and petite lady. She earned her place in the rock pantheon through her own hard work and determination starting in the 1970s when few members of the public respected women rockers.
Ive loved Joan Jett since the very day I heard her songs! And then, took one look and Ive been a fan of hears for 40yrs. She's the best! Love her music!
Not exactly the same band. Just read that she’s the only member who’s the same. But she’s all we need as long as she has great players at this caliber.
I absolutely love this woman! She is rock and roll! I see her perform every time she comes around, and just saw her last year. I had the pleasure of doing a meet and greet with her at the old Saratoga Winners back in 1994!
Another powerful song similar to this is 'Bad Reputation'. Of course her big hit was 'I Love Rock and Roll'. She also had a recurring guest role on Highlander: The Series. Most of us from the 80s had a huge crush on her. 😁
On 'hate myself' confession no.2... now I'm not a qualified therapist, but what I've learnt in life is that you don't have to love yourself, loving you is someone else's job. And mostly, we all have those someone else's. You just have to be comfortable with who you are, accept that none of us are perfect and strive to be the best that you can. When you fail, try to learn lessons, but never beat yourself up for being who you are.
I have several Joan Jett cassette tapes and CDs. I've heard a lot of her songs. But what ticks me off is I never knew this song existed until 2021. I had recently lost my job after 28+ years and hadn't started my new job. Had almost a year off. To keep myself sane I would just start listening to songs on here and seeing where it took me. Heard this one and was amazed, then got upset I had never heard it before. Now it's my favorite song of hers, and she looked so freaking hot in this video. Now it's in heavy rotation on my favorites list.
Thank you for sharing your "cool self" with all of us, Elizabeth! You make many people's days brighter!! Also, Joan Jett is a Rocker! Had such a crush on her growing up... Peace to you!

I agree. I saw her live when i was 15.
@@Cadinho93 she is still amazing! Looks great, sounds great, and like she is having an absolute blast every show.
They all smiled at me as I said hi (the only word I could come up with in the magical moment), and Joan walked over to the window and gently caressed my cheek and at the same time gently pushed my head out with a smile and the words:
- Sorry boy!
I was in heaven for the rest of the night and I said to my friend that I would never wash my face again. 😊😋
I was 15 years old at the time and Joan was 19 at the moment, turning 20 later that year.
Omigosh, that’s a heckuva story!
The guitar and drum intro is just one of those iconic riffs that makes the song instantly recognizable and lets you know right off the bat that something amazing is coming and it doesn't disappoint - ever!
When it came on the radio, the first bar that had you scrambling to crank up the volume.
Would love to see a reaction to in this moment
Don't just list all the greatest of all time female rockers to get clicks!!!!
@@paulmartin2348 not even close! Those are just some big names! I left a bunch off the list! Lzzy Hale. Debbie Harry. Grace Slick. Amy Lee. Dorothy Martin (IMO, anyway). And on! 😁
Oh yes, Lita Ford!
I saw her back in 1983. I was a little late to the show and I could hear her rocking from outside the building. Anticipation was building as I got closer to the door. She put on a great show opening for ZZ Top. 2 Hall of Fame performers. Outstanding.
Elizabeth, it's your uniqueness that makes me come back to your channel repeatedly.
Don't change.
Joan Jett is the total OG of women's rockers. She did the dam thing before many of others, and her music shows that rebellious attitude so well. I always enjoyed her vocals and music, not to mention she was in the Highlander tv shows, which makes her a legend.
YESSS! Highlander! I mentioned that too! ❤
@@taraschneider6115 Hell yea!!
In some ways she stands on the shoulders of Suzie Quatro. Suzie started the Bad Ass meme then Joan grabbed it and ran with it.
Let's also give Patti Smith her flowers. She never had the career that Joan did, but her influence is massive.
I’m seeing her open for Alanis Morissette this Sunday. Your timing couldn’t be better.
Just saw the show in Toronto, have fun. Make sure you get there on time she started right on time, and I missed the 1st song. Alanis was really good too, enjoy
I saw them in Austin in June - fantastic show!! Enjoy!
Joan Jett is a true rock and roll star. No affectations, no act, she is herself onstage and puts it all out there. In a similar way to AC/DC she stormed onto the scene with her style and it worked great, and still works. She is amazing.
No affectations or act?! lol Her entire look and stage performance is affectation and act. That's the point: she's a performer.
A female version of Billy Idol
Oh oh oh play Rebel Yell video
You may not believe it, but Joan is shy. Not at all the performer you see on stage.
Her look back then was SOOOO early 80's punk rock. She still tours, and still rocks. Sounds amazing, looks amazing.
3 things I hate about myself:
1) I hate that I always think the worst to myself about myself or others, (negative self speech, assuming a friend is faking being a friend, a partner is unfaithful, etc.) but I love that I am able to now steer my mind away easier from those rabbit holes and reassure myself on what is reality and what it self maleficence.
Cherry Bomb!
Cheri was more of the fuck you rock'n'roll
attitude.
I hate myself for never having seen Joan Jett or Lita Ford live. So many of my favourite artists owe so much to them and their influence.
It's not too late to see JJ, she's still tearing up the stage.
Sadly for me, mostly seems to be US tours. Which is reasonable enough, but not something I can just pop over for.
Joan Jett and Debbie Harry (Blondie is a BAND, not a PERSON) have been and - still are - good friends since the late 70s
@@randymarthins3473 It's actually "Deborah'... No one called her 'Debbie'
My aunt was a HUGE Joan Jett fan. She very much patterned her look after a mix of Joan Jett and Elvira, lol. She was only about 10 years older than me, so she ended up being a huge influence on my taste in music (and horror movies, lol). Love Joan Jett
Every teenage girl, myself included) wanted to be half that cool n confident
My sister is five years older than me and I owe my love for Joan (and Metallica, Iron Maiden and more) to her. Back in the 80s we'd listen to a lot of vinyls in her room.
@@obbekjaer heck yeah. My aunt had a waterbed and I remember distinctly lying on her bed with the music cranked up loud enough that I could feel the vibrations through it, lol.
One of the best concerts I ever attended.
I miss my teen '80s
Ms. Jett was my first rock and roll crush back in the late 70's. Keep on keeping on 😎🤘🍻
She was my first celebrity crush but it was this era of her
Oh, and arguably the best "ow"s in this sector of rock. PERIOD!
Joan plays pure, simple Rock. Very relatable, very catchy and it just hits right. There are a number of rock bands and solo artists who just nail that kind of sound. AC/DC, Bob Seger and CCR come to mind. They aren't there to show off, they just come to kick ass and take names.
100% No pretense.....just fun. makes you smile. makes you bob your head, tap your foot, pump your fist. Bruce Springstein somes to mind.
I honestly.though Joan Jett WAS Leather Tuscadero when I first saw her! I think Fonzy dated Leather's sister, Pinky Tuscadero though
@@mamatay7 Ditto! Can't believe I still remember that double-thigh slap and point like it was yesterday!
Yay KJQ!
I hate myself for not showing more love and affection to my wife before she passed away from cancer. I'll live with that one until the day I die.
That is a kind of regret that eats away at many of us (myself included), I'm sure. Oh, if we could only roll back time..
Thank you for sharing this.
Note the drummer in this video Thommy Price also played drums for Billy Idol (Rebel Yell) and Patty Smyth and Scandal (Warrior)
Completely, criminally, underrated drummer.
Scandal/patty never gets enough love.
Being a drummer myself, this is the sidebar info I appreciate. Thank you.
My go to karaoke song because the first time I sang it, HE was there. Cathartic!
Can't wait for this one!!! One of the ladies that kicked the door open for those that followed!! After her it was ok to be a lady that seriously Rocked!!
Yup! The “Bad Reputation” video does the story justice. 🙌
I saw her with the Runaways at The Whiskey Ago-Go in 1976 . Great show,
Nice, how were they?
Wow, what a memorable time!
Thank you for taking me back to Gen X paradise for a few minutes! Hairspray and power chords for days.
She already did her - Love is a Battlefield. Not the song I would have started with.
Check her out in the Runaways, featuring another woman of hair metal. Lita and Joan, rock out.
How did your mom enjoy the show?
I saw her in concert before you were born, back in '82 along with Heart, The Teardrop Explodes and the headliner Queen. She was great, 'I Love Rock and Roll' was high in the charts back then.
One of the hardest working musicians. Been a fan sense her runaway days. Got to work a concert in 97 for her and the fabulous thunderbirds. She is such a badass. She was nice to everyone who came up to her. She is one the few that can play arenas and clubs and still put on a hell of show. Just in your face rock n roll.
I love your reviews of artists. I was at this video recording in the audience,She threw her jacket off to the side. Rock on my friend!
The first concert i went to in the 77/80 w/my first girlfriend her concert of i love rock & roll was best
You should do one on Pat Benatar … another 80s rocker that paved the way for female artists. She defined a generation of girls/women in the 80s.
Also, Joan changed her look a few years ago (she’s since gone back) to be a softer version of her and she was absolutely gorgeous.
Bette Davis Eyes❤
She already did a reaction on "Love Is a Battlefield".
@@ladymercymain That is Kim Carnes.
You can not Love others until you learn and accept to Love yourself first and be Honest with yourself. Very hard to do but can be done. 😊
Please, react to Dale Bozzio of Missing Persons with songs like: "Words", "Walking In LA" or "Destination Unknown". She is the original Lady Gaga.
Oh damn, Von! GREAT SUGGESTION! Add in "Give" to that line up.
Lady Gaga is a poor imitation.
This song is not just a song it's an Anthem for anyone who has ever been in a toxic relationship
Oh my gravy I am VERY excited for you to discover Joan Jett 🖤🖤
I just saw her live on Sunday with Alanis Morrisett. They were both great!
Saw her performance at the Mid-South Coluseum in Memphis. She gave a dynamic show and had the whole place rocking!
Music is best when its shared! Thank you Elizabeth for sharing so much with us!
I saw her 3x in the last 2yrs. She looks and sounds exactly the same. I believe it's still the same band, even. She's an icon.
Not exactly the same band. Just read that she’s the only member who’s the same. But she’s all we need as long as she has great players at this caliber.
Joan Jett was my first crush as a boy. Probably set an unreasonably high bar, but damn was (is) she awesome! An icon in all of rock and roll.
In terms of stage confidence (as well as physical stature) Joan reminds me of no one so much as Prince.
Another Highlander shout out! Love it! ❤
Saw her open up for the Policy Synchronicity tour back in 1983 at the now gone JFK Stadium in Philly.
It's because it's delivered with honesty and conviction. You feel her emotion. We've all fell for someone that is totally bad for us.
Joan Jett has many wonderful songs like this one, I was fortunate enough to see her live this year! Great selection!
Niiiiccce! Another dive into Rock 'n Roll Excellence. Frikkin' Joan Jett. Thank you Elizabeth!
I've always loved Joan Jett... always a rocker!! A real badass! Saw her open for aerosmith
This has always been my favorite Joan Jett song.
Truth she is a trailblazer and an icon and bold. Joan nett is the bomb
