- I was presented with a unique opportunity this week to acquire a very rare (1 of 60 produced) Bright Aqua Metallic 1996 LT4 Corvette with higher mileage. Watch me do a walkaround of the car detailing the wear incurred from using it as a regular old daily driver parked outside in an industrial setting for several years.

Very cool car.
130k miles isn't too high.
I've seen the LT-1, and LT-4's for sale, still running great , with 200k miles plus or minus .
My 1996 C4, LT-1 starts right up, with no smoke out the exhaust, and runs strong with 115k miles.
Definitely best bang for the buck performance car on the market.

Just bought a ‘94 manual with 42,000 miles on it. Drove down to a car show today and met a guy with an ‘89 with 190,000 miles, and he says it still runs great. Keeps me optimistic about the future with mine!
For sure, with regular maintenance, pretty much every car from the late 80s on can make a great daily driver. Enjoy your Corvette👍
Care was loved by previous owner, paint was sealed with polish to a great luster and interior was kept nice I have seen some horrific interiors on these cars this one is outstanding!

Man….love that Aqua Blue C4! Especially with the light grey interior. Only needs to be a convertible. I wouldn’t be afraid of a car in this condition with 130,000 miles as long as it looks like it received timely and proper maintenance. Plus, I just like the C4 body style! Good job buddy, hope it cleans up well and you don’t have too much to repair or restore.
Thanks man. It is a very striking color, ands receives quite a bit of attention even from non car people. We've been experimenting with bringing it back up to daily driver status for the last several weeks, and looks like it may be ready for inspection and registration soon.

My ‘96 Convertible has 273k on it and is build number 471. It also has the Mobile 1 sticker. Funny how almost everything you mentioned as common issues my car has too but it’s still a reliable car that fires up every time.

I’m the 3rd owner and I’m fairly sure the PO who bought it in 03 daily drove it so they’re city miles. The original engine spun a rod bearing in June so I put a Camaro LT1 in. I still have the original engine though.
normal things. you would expect for a 24 year old car with almost 300,000 miles on it. Drive 'em until they fall apart around you. 👍

Thanks, appreciate the comment. I always compared the Formula 350's to a wolf in sheep's clothing. If you aren't looking carefully they look like a normal Firebird with some aluminum wheels and the spoiler. Most people have no idea there's a Corvette engine lurking under the hood😁.
I had an 85, sold it and thought it was a good idea at the time after spending several days to fix a code 34 issue with it. Miss having that put 40k on it in 3 years, now I’m looking for a 96. Thanks for the informative video!
Yep, sellers' remorse is a common issue when you get rid of a good Corvette, but at least you have the fond memories😁. Good luck with your search for a 96.

I've had 9 c4s great cars my last 92 blue one had 111 on it when I sold it no problems at all it had all the tweaking bolt ons you could do about 400 hp ran right with the c4 zr1s at beech bend bowling Green at 12.5 quarter mile daily driver can't beat a c4 bang for the buck
Definitely one of the great road cars, and now looking like a simple car to work on relative to the electronics nightmare that the new cars have become.
When you say bolt ons what does that mean? Like headers and a cam? Always wondered that
Yep, he was referring to power adders that you can bolt to the engine that don't require tearing into like headers, intake, and exhaust modifications.

I have a red 96 auto with 83000 miles. My parents were kind and gracious enough to get it for me for graduation for my engineering scholarship (amazingly the insurance went down for me from my 07 Mazda6 even though I’m 20) I’ve had to do a few things on her in the last year and a half but overall has been an awesome car and it seems the previous owner really cared for it. I replaced the gears in the headlights and got to learn how to change pads and rotors on it. One issue I still have is that the parking brake disengages itself. If you film yourself fixing yours or have any tips for fixing them it would be awesome. Thanks and Keep up the great content!
Thats awesome! Glad to hear you are enjoying it. The parking brake is a common failure point in the later C4's when they changed the design in 1990. The release rod tends to get frozen up and sticks causing it to not want to engage. The driver seat needs to come out to properly access it. I'll see if I have some time later this month to put together a short video showing how the mechanism works.

Great video! I bought Polo green 1992 convertible. Runs good there are some things that need work but a great car overall.
Polo green is a very striking color on the Corvette, especially with the contrasting black or tan top. I always considered it the elegant version of the car that would take your lady out for dinner in.
@@VetteSource it is one of my favorite colors that c4's have. The metallic in the paint is beautiful..it is a 6 speed manual. It may need a trans support because while shifting in first and second the stick moves up and down.
Yep, definitely a very classy color. I would check the mounting bolts that attach the C beam to the transmission and differential. They may be loose and causing that movement you talked about. There will be two bolts 7/8's in size in front and two more in the back.

Ok, I remember that. I am more of a word of mouth kind of guy since keeping up with a website and running the business is like trying to drink from a firehose. I am a die-hard Corvette fan, and have been dismantling them for parts for over twenty years now. Chances are if you need something I will have it or can point you in the right direction.
Beautiful C4! I daily a '96 LT4 CE, except when it's snowing. After a suspension rebuild and replacement of injectors it's been a completely reliable car. It's at 55K, I expect another 155K from it. Best value for money anywhere.

Hey David, that Aqua is definitely one of the more striking colors on the C4 and pretty uncommon. I had a 95 Aqua many years back that I sold to fund another purchase, so I was happy to find this one.

I remember a while back seeing a Vette for sale in Houston on Facebook that looked just like this one. He had it labled as a Grand Sport. Since there was only 60 made in this color I'm guessing you bought it. I wanted to buy it but was scared off after watching vids on all the expensive things that could go wrong. Good luck and have fun with it and if you talked him down from his asking price you got one hell of a deal.
Yep, this is the car. The seller was a really nice gentleman that was about to start cancer treatment, so I was more than happy to give him what he was asking for it. Thanks for the comments, I should have some more videos detailing this car soon.

Yea, I checked in on him a few weeks back and he was working his was through the treatment. Miata's are great cars, but once you get a taste of the power of a late C4, you're hooked.

I noticed a scratch on the drivers side glass behind the mirror. My 94 has this as well. What have you found to be the issue causing this? Love the C4 content

The window scratch is present on almost all the 94-96's, my CY LT4 has it as well. The problem is the forward felt window guide. It has metal under the felt exterior and it shifts out of alignment causing the metal to rub directly against the glass causing the scratch to develop over time. You have to remove the door panel to access it so it can be realigned.
I own a 94 Lt1 polo green with 142,000 runs great has some clear coat damage so far everything still working even a.c.

I got a 92 in that color with 25k miles on it. Bone stock minus the Greenwood kit on it. If you'd wanna part ways with the painted top ill take it.
Yep, very unique color that was made for several years. Being that this car was optioned from the factory with both tops, I will have to keep this one with the car. Plus it's too hot to keep the see through top on it during the summer here in Texas😂
I use my LT4 daily, 90 mi round trip. Mine is Polo but i really wanted a Comp Yellow or Aqua Metallic.

The reason the window channels wear out is opening and closing the door by holding the frameless glass! Hold the door not the glass. When I started driving, hardtops and convertibles were very common and we learned you shouldn't hold the glass.

Yep, that's a very common life for many corvettes. They are dream cars for many when purchased new, and are kept in the garage in a secure environment and used sparingly. The Competition Yellow 1996 LT-4 I have featured was treated like this, sitting under a cover in the corner of a warehouse for many years.
My lt1 is still running strong at 95k got a sweet deal on it for 3200 w lots of good parts w it too
That is a good deal. In reality, 95K is just getting broken in for an LT1 Corvette, but for some odd reason the cars with a few miles on them are overlooked.

They were still an option like the earlier year C4's. The option code was C2L, and cost $950 if I remember correctly. You will see it listed on your RPO sticker in your car if it was optioned that way.
Hi. Just came across this video and I would like to correct you on something, there were 357 aqua blue metallic LT-4's built not just 60. I had one and sold it a few years back for a newer model. that's the engine that came in the 1000 skunk's that were built and GM had extra drivetrains left over so they were put into various color C-4's some even made it into some pontiac firebirds!
Robert, you're thinking TOTAL production of Aqua Metallics built for 1996, both LT-1 and LT-4 which was 357 cars. The LT-4's were built in much smaller quantities since they were the optional engine and not ordered as often. Thanks for the comments👍.

Are late 80s l98s any good? Those are the only C4s near my area that have low miles. I might snag one up as a daily.
I like them quite a but. If you're going for a manual transmission car, I would pick the 89 with the 6 speed ZF tranmsission over the 4+3 of the 1988. If you're looking at automatics, either year is a great choice. Let me know if you need any more information👍.
This one is a mid-level car. Not truly a base model since it does have power seats and what looks like the Delco/Bose CD and cassette radio but it's not a fully optioned car. Might actually have the standard 2:59 rear too, Standard seats give it away. Behind the passenger seat is that little storage area that has the parts list and all the information you need. Rare color indeed though.
J, thanks for the input. You're partially correct. This car is equipped with the option code 1SB, which includes the electronic air conditioning, Delco Bose Gold audio system, and power non sport drivers seat. It also is optioned with the LT-4 engine, which required the ZF 6 speed manual transmission, power passenger seat, CD player, and C2L dual roof option(body colored and transparent). It is considered a mid-level quipped car. Quite a few of the LT-4's are "strippers" and have manual air-conditioning, cassette player, and manual adjust seats.
All six speed cars were equipped with the Dana 44's with 3.45 gears, no other optional gearing was available. The 2.59 was the GM1 economy differential gear and was available with automatics in a 2 series carrier assembly.
I own a '94 6spd Polo Green one and I noticed a slight paint rub on the driver's Targa bar. Guess I need to address the front window rail. Is it a difficult job? I do all the mechanical work on my Vette.
It's not overly difficult, just a little tedious to get it right. Most likely the plastic guide has broken or come loose. I will try to add a video to my schedule on how to address this repair since I need to take care of it on this car anyway.

I am looking at purchasing a 1996 LT4 with low miles, original owner, and he has experienced a soft code on the ASR. The code is 0065 and he hasn’t been able to clear it. It stays lit on the info center. He has looked at all the wiring to the front left wheel area as that where it says it is, but cannot find anything in particular. Can you please help with this as I would like to proceed on the sale!? Thank you!

Great! Thanks for the feedback. The 96 Aqua colored cars are fairly rare with only 357 total LT1/LT4 cars produced for the year.
However they made aqua cars starting in 92, so if you are willing to go back a few years odds are you might be able to locate one.
I would recommend 96 as first choice, 94-95 second choice, and 92-93 third choice. Best sources to find them would be ebay, autotrader, cars for sale, and similar websites. You can also try putting want ads on the Corvette forums as well.

@@VetteSource I had a polo green '94, which was nice, but they where everywhere. I noticed the only difference on a '96 is the trim at the front cornering lights are painted the car's color.

It isn't just Corvettes that haven't been maintained you know. I would venture to say that MOST cars over 10 years old have not been maintained properly. I wouldn't have put up with that door being the way it was for more than about two days before I fixed it. And Corvettes are expensive to repair, the parts cost more than other cars, and Corvettes have always been at the leading edge of technology which is often untested. The best car for the money will be a single-owner who drove it but not too much, and kept up with all the maintenance.
Mike, you raise a good point. Most of the secondary owners of complex cars like the Corvettes, Cadillac, Lincolns, Mercedes. Many of them unfortunately have no idea what they're getting into when they acquire one of these. If they have the mechanical skills, anything can be worked out. However, the astronomical cost of the parts can easily take a toll on the pocketbook turning a once great car into an abandoned driveway paperweight. Thanks for the comments 👍.

I have a 96 Collector Edition with the LT4 and 6 speed manual. 17,000 miles. Thinking about selling it. What do you think is fair asking price?
I think I'd start on the high side versus low side. You have a limited production Collectors Edition with the upgraded engine that has a loyal following even among Corvette fans. As long as condition is reflective of the miles, I would start in the low 20s and adjust from there if needed.
My 96 LT4 Collector edition has the Mobil1 placard.

Evan, 357 is the total number of Aqua metallic cars produced, LT1's and LT4's combined. Of those 357 Corvettes, 60 of them were optioned with the LT4 engine. Thanks for the comments.

Cool, it's always exciting when you first get your drivers license. One thing to watch out for, the LT4 was only produced in 1996, so if the seller is claiming his 95 is an LT4, he's either misinformed or trying to pull a fast one.

Valeo makes a good clutch kit and was the OEM supplier for the clutch. The flywheel is another matter however, they are difficult to source and expensive

Hey Omari, thanks for the feedback. Glad you enjoyed it👍. I agree, the market is acting a bit crazy right now but there are still some good deals to be had out there.
Frankly I would avoid any cars above the "rust line". These cars that have been used in areas were salt is the primary deicing agent during the winter will develop severe corrosion on the undercarriage, especially the fuel and brake lines.
Also look out for cars that have spent their lives near the coastal cities, as you can get corrosion build up on the exposed metal surfaces.

If the undercarriage shows no signs of rust do you think I will be ok? Looking at a southern car but it spent a few years in MD. Could of been garaged, it looks like it. Having a hard time finding a fully southern car but im on the prowl lol

Down here in the lower states, driving all year isn't given much of a second thought. In fact, I designate my cars with non functional AC as my "winter beaters"😁.
I should have added in my previous response that a Norhern car that was stored during the winter season is still a viable option. As long as you aren't seeing exposed rust all over the bottom of the car, you should be in good shape. Just be aware that even with limited use during the winter months, these cars can still exhibit some hidden corrosion on the undercarriage fasteners, but that only becomes an issue if/when you are having to take care of needed suspension maintenance.

Looking at all these window sealant problems, forget Corvettes. I'm on my fifth classic Benz, no issues.
As much trouble as they can be, I prefer that over a hydraulic powered latch system straight out of a 1940's aircraft😁. Have a great weekend👍
I have a 95 c4 with the fx3 suspension. It's my daily driver for a little over a year and I can't imagine driving anyting else. When it craps I'll be getting a C5 , it will also be my daily driver when and if it ever happens. I really don't know what the fuss is all about using these cars as a daily. I don't have the kind of money to put on a vehicle as a weekend toy. If I buy it, it's going to earn his keep .
Yep. I would definitely prefer a Corvette for my daily. Of course in my case I usually need a truck to haul broken Corvettes around behind me🤣.

I have a torch red LT4 with about 85,000 miles on it and my biggest issue is the stinking AC controller going bad, replaced it and it still acts goofy as i also have a vacuum issue after i got it back from the repair, the front ac door moves position's under a load, but other than a small fluid leak in my hydraulic clutch assembly, mine has been pretty maintenance free, if i may ask though the clutch seems to be a bit weak, not sure if it's the tranny or a cable adjustment? You really have it go all the way to the floor pretty hard to engage it and pull down on the shifter hard putting it in and holding reverse to keep it from popping out of gear when releasing the clutch and it just doesn't quite feel as strong as it should be through all the gears, any thought's on that? Hey Rob, thanks for the feedback. Glad you're enjoying it. All C4's use a hydraulic clutch, so your pedal engagement issue could be something as simple as the fluid level in the reservoir. If the fluid looks OK, try changing it out with fresh fluid and bleeding the system. Let me know how that works out.
@@VetteSource Hey, Thank you for quick reply!I have already tried that, it was the first thing i did and it didn't change anything, i was wondering if there is a cable adjustment? i know they added the hydraulics just for a smoother feel and it is smooth, but it seems like it may not be engaging fully...as the clutch is being released it doesn't start motion in reverse or forward until you are getting close to the pedal being fully let off of if that helps.
Yea, that's a good description of the problem. There actually isn't any mechanical linkage in clutch system, it's entirely hydraulic. If you've already done those steps we mentioned, than it's quite possible either the slave sylinder or clutch master cylinder is beginning to fail. The rubber components of the system tend to wear with time, and don't hold the hydraulic pressure like they did when new. Take a peek under the car where the slave cylinder goes into the bellhousing. If you see any wetness, then it's on its way out. Sometimes you have to take a flashlight and peel back the rubber boot covering the slave rod to clutch fork to get a good view of it.
@@VetteSource Perfect, Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, I'm thinking the Master cylinder over the slave cylinder would be far better to deal with but the master cylinder did lose fluid in the past to the point i had no Transmission response, so i refilled it and it came back, but that would point to the slave cylinder leaking as you pointed out a possibility.....Thanks Again!

You ever drive a 91-93 Z07 or a 88-90 Z51? The handling is incredible.
I have and they are definitely a great ride. However, you've never felt a C4 riding on rails until you drive an 84 Z51 with 4+3. The spring rates on the 84's are almost twice as much as the later years and are like driving a high powered go kart.
@@VetteSource Ive driven an auto 84 Z51 and its awesome. But i think front suspension geometry changed for 88. Id like to do a back to back comparison drive of an 84 Z51 to like a 93 Z07. Id think the FX3 in conjunction with the Z51 would make for a best case setup.
@@CC_Top_Solutions that would be a good real world test. On one hand you have the raw unvarnished handling and agility of the 84 versus the refined more powerful LT1 car with the bigger brakes, wider tires and adjustable suspension.

I love all C4's, and they're very capable cars. However, the 92 and newer LT1 cars had quite a few of the kinks worked out and were quite reliable.

Funny you asked. This car still has the original optispark installed and works great almost 28 years later.
Do you sit pretty low in it is it comfortable?
It's very comfortable once you get in the car, kind of like being in a jet fighter cockpit. Getting in and out is the trick however. C4's have been compared to sitting in a bathtub so they're not as much fun in that regard.
The Mobile 1 sticker question continues. So, my 1996 Comp Yellow car is Sequence number 2923, was built 8/23/95 and, as I said, also has the Mobile 1 Sticker. So Maybe they just... ran out of stickers? I know that they were literally disassembling the old C4 machinery as the last car left the factory and that the reason why our cars are so rare (The Comp Yellow) is because they were just using up the rest of the paint. My guess is, as little parts ran out, they just said "Eh, screw it.".
I Have less than 11k on my Car and I have some dash pad curling on the passenger side up by the windshield. I have a feeling this is pretty common but haven't seen a fix for it.
Yep, makes sense. Once I saw the sticker on this Aqua car (which is exactly 900 cars before yours) I did a little survey using completed eBay motors listings and other sales sites
The earliest car I found without a sticker was around VIN 4200 which makes sense since my yellow LT4 is in the 8000 VIN range and the first yellow LT4 coupe built in December on the 4th.
Funny thing about our yellow LT4 cars is that 67 of the 144 yellow LT4 coupes/convertibles were built from December 4th to December 19th. It's almost as if they received one final delivery of yellow paint from the supplier and finished up all the outstanding dealer orders in the system.
You're right, not much to be done except keep it out of the sun as much as possible. The vinyl overly on the plastic base has delaminated and the only way to reglue is to remove to entire upper dash pad assembly which isn't much fun😁
@@VetteSource Agreed on the Dashpad, I just make sure I always put a sunshade up when I park it outside (which is rare is this is mostly a "Point A to Point A" car).
As far as the yellow paint that is interesting, my guess is as they were running through it, they would find a pallet here or there with some paint and try and use it up.
It was probably an interesting time in Bowling Green as they moved away from a a car they had bee building for 13 years and closing things down here and there. Cancelling orders that had been basically permanent fixtures, etc...
But that blue you have there is about as rare as hen's teeth and is a striking color up close.

Sub 10k, where? For high mileage ones? Because I look all the time and for ones under 50k dealers/private owners are asking anywhere from $12k-17k, for LT1's. I think the secret is out because the price for nice ones, hell decent ones are definitely going up. I've looked on car guru's, auto tempest, autotrader, and Hemmings.
You're correct that lower mileage cars under 60K miles are bringing strong 💰. The buyer perception is that lower mileage C4's will be less trouble, but that often isn't the case especially if the car hasn't been used on a continuous basis. The sites you listed are usually filled with dealers trolling as individuals peddling Corvettes because they know it's like selling crack. I would recommend doing a nationwide search of FB marketplace and CL city by city so you can dig a little deeper for the deals. They're out there, sometimes just hiding in plain sight, and you have to be prepared to jump on it before somebody else sees it. Thanks for the comments👍

That was an extra cost factory option known as RPO code CC2 to have both the body and see-through tops included with the car. I believe the cost for it was $995 if memory serves me correct.

There's a pretty wide range, but figure $15-$17000 on the high sidd with low mileage to sub $10000 for higher mileage well worn in cars. Since they are not as easy to find in the wild, best thing to do is keep your eyes open for new listings since they tend to disappear quickly unless grossly overpriced.

Some of the parts are a little more difficult to source, but the thing that can get you is the price of some of the Corvette only pieces, and the complexity of the systems. I don't think it's a bad first car, but manage your expectations of how you want to use it and how often it will be needed. You don't want it to become a negative experience and regret owning it.
I bought a 1996 lt4 and the one you want to get is manual ac unit and manual seats both and also the delco radio non Bose system it’s not like the golden series Bose where you have to rewire the whole system to have sound or spend $1500 plus for new refurbished speakers because this system requires factory amps for each speaker yes I said it amps on all 6 speakers. I just got lucky and found out I had the non Bose system where I can install aftermarket speakers and not worry about it and I can use a Bluetooth adapter for my cigarette lighter and still have the oem radio.
Yep, they built quite a few of those "stripper" base model LT4 cars. The option code for them is 1SA, and they will have no power options except for the door locks and windows.
I just want to point out but that intake plenum looks like the one that edelbrock sells. It doesn't look like the stock lt4 plenum.
Mike, thanks for the comments. Unless they changed the casting recently, the Edelbrock intake has a large "Edelbrock" script on the top right behind the throttle body, which this one is obviously missing. Is there anything else you see that makes you think it's an aftermarket piece?
@@VetteSource you're right, I was mistaking it for the performer rpm airgap manifold from edelbrock since some of them came with the option of getting them powder coated red. What I notice was that the one on yours doesn't have the edelbrock script printed right behind the throttle body like edelbrock version does. My apologies.

Love that color, like I said mines got 101k miles and runs strong... only put a msd opti on it and it’s got a tiny oil leak on the back of the intake I believe. Pretty sure that’s where my small amounts of smoke have been coming from when it gets up to temp.
Yea, the Aqua Metallic definitely draws some major attention from people that would ordinarily not even notice a Corvette.
The back of the intake is a common area for small oil leaks. I would also check the oil pressure sending unit. They will sometimes develop a crack in the plastic housing and leak from there. .

I wish i knew more about corvettes i have a really nice 1985 c4 but the previous owners didnt put alot of upkeep into it. Im having some electrical issues not effecting how its running but killing my battery. Derek, I know how you feel. Sometimes it can feel intimidating when dealing the with the mechanical and multiple electrical systems on the Corvettes, especially the C4 and newer cars. I would recommend finding a factory service manual for your car from ebay. It has a wealth of information in it, and can help you diagnose quite a few problems with your car. Thanks for watching 👍.

Hey Jason, it's coming along. I've finished cleaning up and painting the passenger under hood inner fender and have completed most of the prep work needed so I can reinstall the cylinder head and exhaust manifold. My 96’ GS has that headlight problem. Just developed. When I reconnect battery, it goes “whap, whap, whap, whap, whap (and a few more whaps) and then stops. The headlights still work for now (still fold up). Are those stripped gears something that can be fixed by an owner, or is that a fix for a mechanic? Will you video that repair?

The headlight motor fix just takes a few simple tool to perform, but is a bit tricky to get all the steps done the first time. I will add a headlight repair video to the schedule so you guys can see how to remove the motors and perform the bench repair.

Yea, the two colors end up looking very similar in camera light. Since Aqua Metallic wasn't offered until 1992, odds are yours is the Quasar Blue. If you still have the RPO sticker in the glovebox lid, you can figure out what the color is. Just let me know and I can point you in the right direction.

Nope, 6 speed only. For 96 all automatics are LT1 and all LT4 were six speed. If you see a car advertised otherwise they see either misinformed or lying😁

That's actually a decent deal for a 96, especially a low production color like Competition Yellow. They only made 488 of them total. I would buy it👍.

Yep, the Mobil 1 sticker first started appearing on the 1993 Corvettes. Up until 1992 they still had the Corvette Bowling Green emblem installed in that location. Thanks for sharing👍

How many small block Chevy engines go over 200k with no major issues. Alot of them. They have overdrive transmissions reducing engine speed at cruise speed. Miles are almost a non issue. Check for oil leaks and do a compression test to know your true engine conditions.
Excellent point. There's a reason it was the #1 among the list of longest produced engines.

You may not have noticed, but I'm pretty familiar with the design😁. It's very similar to the other GM vehicles from that era, with the exception of the stow away parking brake handle. Once you learn the system, it's just a matter of adjusting or replacing the spring-loaded tension cable.

I have one. Like it, but it's a money hole. been through radiator replacement, water pump replacement, distributor upgrade. intake gasket replacement, transmission rebuild. They are fun, fast but they are all plastic inside and out. Very poor quality car for the repair parts and money upkeep. With me , it's an expensive toy.

😁, nope I make sure they are kept clean and orderly and not laying around like dead dogs with flat tires or up on jack stands. Many of the guys stop by to check them out and shoot the breeze while I'm out tinkering with them. Plus it helps to live in an older non HOA neighborhood🤣.
LT4 has different rings, rocker arms and computer profile. The LT 4 is no advantage if it is very old. Mine had 60 k miles worked well. Not a good buy for me. I also had 5 C 4 models. Pass

Yep, even with the Mecum "premium" added to the final price, most of the C4's I see coming across are a smoking deal. The 80's Formulas and Mustangs were also on my favorites list, that's how I ended up with the Formulas and a Mark VII.

I agree. I picked mine up at the salvage auction after it got flooded in Hurricane Harvey a few years back for the incredible price of $35. Drained all the water out of the engine, cleaned up the interior(during which I found $21 in quarters in the center console) and then gave it to my son as a daily driver. @@VetteSource I think i jinxed myself when i compared replacing all the oxygen sensors to the optispark because i had to install one today and that is after i installed a DOA out of the box optispark last week.. That is a soul crushing feeling knowing you spent 6+ hours installing a part only to turn the key and hear it continually roll over without firing up ... Then comes the headache of returning it & remembering to buy new water pump gaskets.. But this one seems to work great ( Let's hope it stays that way for 5 years or longer, fingers crossed... Lol )
Man don't I know it. It's never any fun to complete a job only to have to start over again. I think the corvette engineers were trying to outdo each other as to which one could come up with the most complex ignition system. They definitely won the prize with the opti😂
If u consider 133k to be high mileage and give accolades for it's condition and functionality then u have low expectations for poor American quality as anytoyota at 133k is just broken in. I doubt u can get a grand sport cheap unless lucky.i have an 87 c4 and I must say the period electronics for smog and the rest is a pain for reliability and the plastic they chose for cheapness breaks to dust at a touch. I don't let GM off as easily as many do for chewing on their top profit maker and flagship advertising vehicle. I've had a c3 and a c4 so far and loved them both but the crude c3 was far easier to maintain and much prettier design but I believe the c4's are the last really good looking better as they progressed towards a kids Transformer look step by step after this likely because generationally these kids grew up playing with transformer toys so they met market consumer designs in order to sell. The c7 and 8 in particular are garish ugly excuses for a high-end sports car.

I probably should have clarified that 133K is not what I normally consider high mileage, as my daily drivers are a Silverado 3500 and a Suburban both with way north of 200K miles and still kicking.
For the Corvettes, even though I know they're capable of much higher numbers on the odometer, the high mileage cars are the exception rather than the norm, and become talking points because they're are so few of them relative to lower mileage Corvettes.
I also find it disappointing that GM has constantly cheaped out on certain materials with the Corvette, especially since like you said it is their flagship vehicle.
I find the C2-C4 generation the most visually appealing, and even though I like the C5 and newer Corvettes, have become disappointed in the accelerated use of plastics and crazy geometric shape styling that all new cars suffer from these days.

For sure, the C4's are the first generation that really made it easy to daily drive without having to worry about minor breakdowns and such. I have parted our several early C4's with well over 200K miles.
The engine looks like a LT1 and not a LT4
They definitely look similar but there are a few easy ways to tell the difference.
First thing, if it has a manual 6 speed, it is absolutely an LT4, as they were only offered as LT1 with automatic and LT4 with six speed.
The eighth digit of the VIN will also be 5 for LT4/P for LT1.
Lastly, even though you can paint the base intake red, there will be no EGR valve like an LT1.

All 96 manuals were LT4's. They had a 8000 RPM tach and a red throttle body also. About 6k were made including 1k in GS version along with a few Firehawks and camaros. Its a long legged rascal and fun to wheel. Mine is white .
Good info Paul, thanks for sharing👍. White LT4's like yours are also not very common, with only 504 total produced. The majority of the production was centered around the GS, Collectors Edition, and red and black cars.

It's an older neighborhood with no HOA and pretty laid back residents. Many of my neighbors are car enthusiasts and tell me it's like seeing a car show at my house. Some of them even bring their kids over to look at the cars. Of course there may be some that disapprove, but isn't that the truth with all things in life😁?
That isnt high mileage as far as I am concerned! Few years ago, saw NSX with close to 425K miles, needing a clutch for sale, but 300 to 400k will definitely catch my attention, I have a Ford Festiva with 455K miles i once drove, needs a little love, but still has life left in it
Hey Randy, I agree with you. Low mileage Corvettes are perceived as more desirable, even though they're just pieces of machinery that will suffer form non use more than if being used at least semi regularly.
I personally like driving, so I don't worry about the overall mileage like many others. The trick is just finding enough time to put the miles on them. I'd love to drive 500,000 miles in one of my cars😁.
@@VetteSource only vehicles I once put crazy miles on were older Harleys, 200K-300K before I got tired of it & replaced it, & yes required a lot of upkeep. I cut my teeth working on vintage Harleys in my youth at an independent shop.
but for miles? thats easy.... I have 2 homes 45 miles apart, my job is fairly close to the middle, between them, I also travel out of town several days a week 30 or so miles from either home for food, & before you know you drive or ride 600-800 miles a week, then if you do a few mini vacations each year, plus a few real vacations, my daughter lives 850 miles away, & done many 1 day each way rides to spend 2-3 days there. last month I was helping a co-worker find a decent vehicle, they freaked out it was almost 400 miles away, while I am like, ill ride up after work without sleep, catch a couple hours, buy it, & roll back on my day off, & be at work the next day, but they gave up, refused to go that far, so I found 1, 25 miles away from my second home, got to do repairs this week,
This thing has been parked outside and not maintained very well. It’s a cool car but it is a $4,000 car at best right now. A dealer would bid $1000.

Aaarrrrggh! It is simply a VIN. It is NOT a VIN-Number because as most of use know VIN stands for Vehicle Identification NUMBER.
I have been daily driving my '96 for over 5 years now. It is on its THIRD optispark, and has been towed home twice. Late C4s, especially 92-94 with the unvented first gen opti, are uniquely awful except as Garage Queens because that damn Optispark will die without warning. It is an expensive fix, or a PITA-Ass if you DIY-Yourself and there are zero reliable replacements. As I'm sure the PO-Owner found out the hard way.
89-91 (or any ZR-1) are the only reasonably reliable C4s to even consider. Hope you got it dirt cheap! That's all they're worth. If you want to add a torch red to your fleet, let me know.

Why would you assume LT4? Because both of yours are? Both LT1 and 4 have the dreaded Optispark. Both will leave you stranded with no warning. No problem if all you do is drive to the monthly Cars and Coffee. I just can't drive it farther than AAA will tow.
Mine is a base coupe. I've only had it since September '15. No serious accidents since then. You'd have to check CarFax for info prior. I never did.
I tell people it has a 10 foot paint job. If you get close enough, you will know it's the original paint. But for a 25 year old DD, it is spectacular. The gas lid even matches the rest of the car. Always a head turner. Wherever I stop, a carversation ensues.
I bought it with 86K on the clock. It's sitting at 117K now. Two year and 5 months on the latest Opti.
New radiator, knock sensors, coolant last week. Weatherstrip is all fresh. New sun visors (no more droopy ears). The pop-up headlights even work.
If you are serious, I can provide VIN and RPO codes. I am done with GM.
But there are plenty of folks who know nothing of the LT's Achilles heel. They get bad information from places like YT and get stuck with a turd. It will be sold this spring.
Had I known then what I know now, I would've limited my search to the '89-'91 model years. ZR-1 prices are just nuts. But that, and the GM boat, have sailed forever for me.
I will always remember GM for their beautiful lawn art designs.
I can understand your frustration with cars built during first generation of electronics, they can be troublesome especially if you don't have the knowledge or a good technician to work on them. From what you described, it sounds like you have a nice car, and being a late C4, one of the best in terms or build quality. Corvettes always have had their quirks, and its only gotten worse as the years go on. You should see some of the electronics problems C5 owners have to put up with.
As for me, I am usually only interested in C4's equipped with LT-4's and/or six speeds, so I'll pass on yours. I don't mind automatics, I just prefer the manual shift cars. Of course my overall preference is Corvettes from the 50's-60's, but there aren't that many of them laying around. I'm sure if you advertise your car locally, you will have quite a bit of interest.
