I know someone who got clean after 10 years and 4 overdoses. She works, made amends with her family…she got hooked on Vicodin at 15 that her doctor prescribed instead of treating her arthritis. So many of you would just let her die. Even I, as a chronic pain patient, have so much compassion for addicts because they’re in pain too…it’s just a different type of pain. It’s not like I’m off the hook…I’ve dealt with compulsive shopping and binge eating.
Some people's brains are more susceptible to opioids and addiction than others. And you don't know unless you try it. Doctors have to be more careful with what they prescribe and watch out for their patients.

Every single human being has an addiction of some kind. It's human nature. But some addictions are worse than others. But making people who are addicted into villains is exactly the opposite way of making any kind or real change. We are all villains. Just in different ways
I went to doctor for a slight back pain. After 5 minutes, without even examining me he said, We can go two ways: physical therapy or pain medication. I immediately yelled out, physical therapy, of course! I mean, doesn't this country have enough of a prescription pain medication problem??!! I just couldn't believe this guy!

These tranq wounds are horrific. I've been watching videos of Kensington for years now and am so sad what's transpiring there. Those nurses who help those with gangrenous wounds are true angels who show their love for humanity. ❤️

@@dcj9329 sadly I don't think that would work. I live in oregon and they attempted to reduce penalties for small amounts of meth, heroin, fentynal and now they are reexamining this as it is clear it's not working. This was done with the hope that people would opt for treatment.
This is exactly how fentanyl came in. It was originally cut into other drugs.
At first- just like tranq nobody knew that things were being laced with it.
My brother was one of the first people to die in Chicago the weekend it came to town.
It's heartbreaking.
It was originally because the US government made opium illegal, then heroin... see where the problem lies? It's very easy to see.

I was born and raised on those exact same philly streets. Moved 8 years ago and let me tell you I don’t recognize these streets AT ALL. I’m even scared to drive through it makes me so sad. I want to help because this is where I grew up but it’s just too damn terrifying.

It's not actually the mom's jobs. Why not say Dads? Why not say 'parents'? Why not say 'governments'? It's not a moms problem and not up to moms to solve it. It isn't a "anti all drugs" thing though. Some drugs (even fentanyl) has legitimate usage in the medical field it's just that since the doctors have cracked down on prescribing opiate type pain medications the cartels are getting lab made fentanyl from China or Mexico and it's being taken across the border into the USA and it's being cut with this Zylozine stuff that's causing all these fatal overdoses/and wounds that you now see on addicts because Zylozine isn't meant to be used on humans. It's used in veterinary care. So every drug has it's place in medicine but it's just getting into the wrong hands unfortunately.
Not to sound callous but saying “lucky” to have survived that overdose is a stretch. What “life” are they returning to?!?These people are sadly giving themselves the slowest and most depressing deaths available. Maybe just let them pass, living on the streets as literal zombies with no thread of human dignity is NOT living. Maybe every time they inject themselves they are wishing to not wake again. It is such a waste of life but, sadly it would be more humane to let them go. In my area, getting an ambulance is a real ordeal as most are tied up with overdoses. People have died waiting for help because medics are usually tied up with this.

I honestly don't understand the ppl in comments saying "these ppl are making a choice" or worse yet "worthless". There's literally ppl in this story who prove that you can turn your life around, with help! If we turn our backs on addicts, then they are forgotten and lost.
Don't forget, literally all of white America turned it's back on the BLK/brn crack epidemic, changed the laws to punish, and jail them longer than powder cocaine for white addicts. But sense opioids and fent has addicted and killed more whites, now drug addicts need counseling and not jail. So, the hypocrites are only concerned when white folks are the victims of drugs.

I’ll agree with you to a point. The people that decided to do drugs in the first place, I had no idea that they would get addicted and be living on the streets. It was still a choice and people were living on the street drug addicted are choosing to put drugs into their body, nobody’s holding a gun to their head and telling them they will kill them if they do not do drugs, and every person who has trauma does not become a drug addict,
@@rainforme1850 obviously no one is putting a gun to anyone's head and forcing them in that context. But you've obviously not seen drug addiction close up. I believe if you had, you would have a ton more empathy. Hard drugs of various sorts, and alcohol are physically addictive. If you don't have them you get physically sick and in some cases can actually die. And to your other point, maybe some have made a thought out voice to try drugs and then gotten in over their head and into full blown addiction. But I cannot emphasize the amount of people who go unknowingly into that abyss. My childhood best friend got her first boyfriend at 15/16, he was an older man who owned a surf shop. She was young and impressed that someone like that would be interested in her. She got introduced to meth and heroin via this worldly, experienced business owning guy through beach raves to "just have fun". She had no idea what these things do to your body or the addiction process. She passed away due to a septic infection after leaving rehab years later and so far into addiction she had hit rock bottom. So, tldr, a vast amount of ppl get introduced to these substances naively, not knowing the consequences and risks, having been naively introduced by people who are very much taking advantage.

Nothing about them is heroic. Not trying to rain on their parade, but they are fulfilling their egos and playing God. Plain and simple, they have no solution. Only God heals.

Many of these addictions stem from trauma, depression, childhood abuse or neglect.

I knew many, many, many heroin addicts who stuck needles in their arms and taught teenages how to do it, too, well before painkillers even tried to addict someone.

I watch videos like this and find myself getting so angry. Angry at overprescribing doctors, at politicians, at pharmaceutical companies, at the people who produce and sell the drugs, and yes, even angry at the people who choose to take drugs (there's always that first time, before they're addicted). The drug problem is such a massive web of irresponsibility and greed and selfishness and lack of care for human life, that I don't think it can ever be solved. So many people dying needlessly and for what? To line pockets. The same old disgusting story.
I had a friend given meth every day he wanted it since he was 13 before he got sober.... so I'd watch your holier than thou attitude for things you clearly know nothing about.

I am from Philly and my loved one died in February 2020- from an OD with fentanyl and Tranq gotten from Kensington, There is nothing worse I miss him every day and hope he has found peace.
I feel your pain. My cousin lived and died in my house. He overdosed on fentanyl.

What causes addiction? Bad decisions, predispositions, trauma, a failed system, parents who failed them, ect. The list goes on.
and the MAJOR one : It's always everybody's else's fault mentality.
@@123pripri there are people with that mentality that don't struggle with addiction. There are also ppl that struggle from addiction that are very accountable with themselves and how they got there. There are good people who die from addiction. And shitty people who don't know the battle. The worst people in my book are the most judgemental. 🙄

These people with substance abuse problems are the canaries in the coal mine. They are no different from the tens of millions of people in this country confronted by an utter lack of meaning in their lives. We also see the way out of this disaster in the example of the people who rush to help those who have stumbled. If we work together, we can restore our communities while bringing ourselves closer to a more purposeful existence.
Lack of meaning is the nail on the head. I work with young adults. And I'm 61. They ask where do I get all my energy from? I was thinking about their faces how lost and no meaning to them. I've tried to explain how to get meaning in their life but it's very difficult. Most have never been touched by the holy spirit, a little bird, or anything that's a guide. Sad... I can't make them see it to embrace it.

I wondered about this. I've noticed more nodding ppl everywhere and we're 55 miles from the nearest city. But it's like all the homeless are nodding now. I get it. Anything to make the day go by. This is wild. So much focus on a plant when this stuff is around.
If you’re struggling and don’t think it’s possible, I was a IV heroin addict and a hopeless junkie. I’ve had two single uses in 8 years and am now in a director role at my company. It is possible to walk away from this life, it’s hard and lonely at first but living life as a junkie is harder and lonelier.
My step daughter and good friend found their out my mother who was addicted to prescription pain meds never did. These people are wonderful. Never judge those that are addicted. I truly never understood it but it’s real and you never know when someone you love will be go down that terrible and tragic rabbit hole. For a time I thought I lost my daughter. She cleaned up, attended college, she is extremely intelligent, has a great career and her own beautiful family now. I true miracle. Thanks for your efforts.

I know, in Chicago the heroin scene was much worse in the 90's. There were lines that were a block long to purchase. Yet there was no internet.

A guy i know just had 6 of his fingers amputated cause of tranq.I am in recovery now, stopped using before tranq hit,but i used to cop in Kensington in the '90s.Makes me so angry that this has been around for a while now n cause it hit other parts of the country ,NOW it's a problem.It has been a problem for a couple years now.

Most go and use again. It’s enabling. I understand where you are coming from, it’s tough, because the humanity in us believes that everyone is deserving of a second chance. But it’s like beating a dead horse. Reform is needed, addicts should have to work and give back to the community and in turn be provided a place to live, detox, and intense therapy. Drugs will always effect the economy so they won’t stop. But thousands of people’s deaths can possibly be prevented. Addicts should do street cleanups in exchange for food and a place to stay. Tax paying dollars aren’t going to many good things as it is.
Tranq has even made its way up here to Canada.i noticed the fentanyl users now are starting to get giant open wounds. Such a terrible drug.
I feel bad for the children/home owners, commuters that have to travel thru that filth. Addicts are talked about like angels. I travel thru this section of Philly, and it's free for all. I'm running out of empathy for addicts and these greedy, low-life dealers need to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
Dealers and drug companies and the government are the problem. And too many traumatized children. Nixon flooded poor neighborhoods with heroin, the cocaine. Drug companies need to be regulated and again how ta horse tranquilizer getting on the street? We didn't need fentanyl it should never have been made.

@deannereed5155 Funnily enough, I do have an addict sibling, and I'm really sick of them. My sibling is 33. They knew the dangers of hard drugs. I love my sibling, but I won't enable or coddle them to death.

It takes empathy and support but mostly it needs self-discipline and sticking to being sober. One relapse, OK but families cannot keep going through the destructive merry go round that addicts take them on.

I was reading something not too long ago that said in June of this year the CDC reported that the percentage of fatal opioid overdoses that detected xylazine as well rose by 276% in recent years. What that works out to is in January 2019 the percentage of opioid deaths involving xylazine was at 2.9% but in June 2022 it was up to 10.9%. That’s a massive jump no matter how you look at the numbers. Before xylazine was mixed in, the stuff on the streets was all garbage, but now they have managed to make something that was already garbage even worse. You would think that the dealers would not want this stuff mixed in because it’s literally killing off their customers.

I don't know. As a former heroin addict I know a person has to want to stop. But it seems like just giving up on people would be like losing a little bit of our humanity. I just don't know.
This is hard to see. When people behave like this I feel like there is no turning back. A wasted life.
I remeber 20 or so years ago people broke into our horse stable and stole all of the drugs we had for the animals.

These people are doing more for the community at the heart of the situation and at ground zero than any other bloated Government program ever could. How is that woman that survived the overdose “one of the lucky ones”? None of those people are lucky.
It’s been this way since the 80s, the city let this get out of control. It’s open air human trafficking, drug dealing . You can get away with any crime around there. Hopefully all the attention will stop this

We've lost 5 people from my less than 100 graduating class to overdose. Most of them didn't make it to 25. We're 35 now. I fear several more will be lost before we're 45. They've always liked drinking but now with pill presses being common and cheap. You've no idea what you're really buying.
why can't someone focus on the ability for drug dealers to not be able to acquire the xylazine? How do THEY get access to it to put in the drugs to be sold ? There once was a DEA agent or someone who found out how to stop the import of an ingredient to make a drug no longer made because of what he did. I think it was Quaaludes maybe and I think the place the ingredient was maybe in India ?
My cousin is deep into the depths of this hell almost to the point of losing his arm if he doesn’t stop… the people who invented this are evil beings.

Good practice for healthcare workers
Drug use has a plethora of reasons. Some users are miss guided, some drug users have and make very poor choices. Many have no goals. Moreover, humans have been using mind altering substances for millenia. Clearly, drug use is complicated.

I could not risk my life for others…..many mentally unstable and high individuals will kill you while your there to help!
It’s great that you can admit that. Don’t be a nurse!!. And don’t be anyone who’s out there helping these individuals.!! The way you think it’s not how everybody else thinks…. Hopefully you’re not in a medical field where you’d ever have to treat someone who is addicted.
This is also one of the deep issues of America. Because we are such an individualistic society , many of these issues like drug use is so high here. If there was a true sense of community in our American society like you see in small villages in developing countries, our issues like drug addiction and homelessness would be on the decline.

Drug dealers are also victims not saying it’s okay but hard work at a 9-5 isn’t viable for everyone we have always been in a “cost of living crisis” just not everyone has been in a crisis and have been okay with having to pay to live. Not everyone who steals or sells drugs has no other choice but many are indoctrinated into within the communities they live in their dad do it theirs dads did uncles brothers and friends “that’s just how it is” much like having to go to work and poverty existing in the richest country in the world “that’s just how it is” because money is valued over human lives not saying that if people had money hey wouldn’t do drugs because right people also have a whole drug reality at the top of the world but it would give them access to help because you have to …. Pay for therapy and any mental assistance or what for months just to get in contact with someone who gets a government check to “help you” but just puts you on anti depressants and makes u into a “valuable citizen” that can produce for your content even though they simply identify y with a ss number
They made their choice and chose to use their American protected freedom in this manner. More than any person on this earth, Americans have freedom to say no to drugs and the wealth and opportunity not to live a life of despair and perdition. True, socioeconomic and psychological factors also play in this respect, but you can't blame the drug dealer or the immigrants who allegedly are bringing the drugs. The health care industry also makes psychiatric and psychological treatment nonexistent which also contributes to this because big Pharma and Law Enforcement make more money with crimialization and addiction.

The drug dealers are the titans of capitalism. Big Pharma, Monsanto, Bayer and Dow. Not to mention Anhauser, Gallo and KFC. Sugar is a drug and is abused. Kensington is the new Love Canal.

Of all the drug Addiction videos I have watched, this one has had the most impact & it actually scared me.
I live in the ghetto in Ontario Canada & I see drug addiction every day but nothing comes close to this. I use Marijuana to help me with my health issues because pharmaceutical drugs caused way more damage than the actual symptoms of my disease & over the past year I have been lessening my use of it because most strains I have tried have been so strong I haven't been able to be tolerant to it & I believe this is due to Governments NOT stepping g in to close them illegal pot shops & governing the marijuana produced in my region.
I notice the THC percentage in me4 going down every time I try new weed & in some cases the known strains I use to use I cannot tolerate them anymore & their THC % is way off like its wrongly labeled or its the wrong strain. I am even more intolerant to pharmaceutical medications & knowing all the drugs in my area & now seeing this has me greatly concerned about Government intervention to control drug addiction such as drug enforcement & the toughest penalties ever for drug trafficking, possession && importing or manufacturing these illicit drugs & taking control of pharmaceutical corporations & making them accountable as the same from physicians for over prescribing any drug that has a narcotic effect on people by restricting physicians from dispensing such drugs unless the person using them actually requires them & are being strictly monitored by their physician which many physicians now do not which I was under the impression they where.
I have to find a way for people to watch this video to warn them of this threat.
Governments are NOT taking enough preventive action to control this issue which I think they wont since they started making certain drugs legal now which weren't before & the easy access to opioid Drugs via [physicians who are not being made accountable for every prescription they write to their patience & many who are sharing their medications or selling them for profit which I see on a regular basis where I live by means of hands exchange money for prescription drugs through doors kind of like a site unseen thing.
I think people may have to hit the streets & force our Governments to change law about drugs & their availability & private use & how the medical industry must take charge to eliminate the overly prescribed & addictive nature of some of their drugs they dispense. DRUGS should be the last resort & tool in combating mental health issues & restricted to those who are a danger to themselves & or public & if this is the case then the person should be in an appropriate facility such as a psychiatric hospital or group home or some rehab facility that can monitor them & assist their wellness in person every day until a favourable conclusion is reached.
This video was very scary & enlightening & I learned something here today & am going to do some inquiries as to how local Municipal & provincial governments are going to handle these drug issues that are costing Tax payers MILLIONS annually & Ruining perfectly good lives
Hahahaha America can't solve its own problem, but when it comes to being a hero in Ukraine, I ask myself: why not save your own people first before becoming a superhero in another country?
