I've worked on various harm reduction outreach teams, in the covid isolation unit for the homeless population in my city and at multiple Safe Consumption Sites. When Guy said that he asked the nurse why she was crying after his Overdose and she said "because I care" that resonated with me because it is so real and so true. We love each and every person we care for and getting to see their successes and being able to support and cheer them on throughout it is an invaluable experience.

I understand the prevention part of saving lives. No one deserves to die over a stupid drug that took over their life. Personally for me, the programs kept me sick - no talk about treatment, only asked me if I was suicidal each visit. I just needed clean needles and took advantage of what was offered. Addicts use and abuse until we get what we need. Period. I wasn’t the type that was just using the street in front of people but I would in my car. We Are setting the tone that that’s okay and kids seeing This is horrible. Sober for 3 1/2 years now from strict discipline and had a good friend (never did drugs) who never gave up on me even though I burned all bridges. I had to hit bottom by almost loosing my arm. Subs saved me. I tried everything prior, methadone, kratom, monthly vivatrol shots, cold turkey with counseling, ect. If you want these people off the streets, they want to want it but they are too comfortable.

Here’s the thing. These things need to come with REQUIREMENTS! With strings attached! If you go to say, a heroin clinic, like in Switzerland? It comes with benefits they incentivize you to GET A JOB. Or volunteer and have a sense of purpose. The issue is these people are dealing with a disability. Maia Zlavitz has a good book on addiction called Unbroken Brain. Basically addiction is a learning disability and you self medicate with drugs bc it’s part of the brain’s reward system and you have bad coping skills. One of the guys talks about “numbing the pains of the past.” Again, they cope with abuse and trauma with drugs instead of being strong (the brain views the drug as needed for survival).
It’s like the rat park study. They MUST HAVE A SENSE OF PURPOSE or else they will NEVER GET CLEAN and just drain resource. Help them in a meaningful way!!

Let's not kid ourselves. This does not work. It is sad to see that these human beings are just numbers in the eyes of their government, a process that's lazy and does not have a concrete plan to cure this mental disease. It is a daily struggle for an addict to stay sober. Living one day at a time and always praying that you don't give in to your cravings. I am very disappointed that a progressive country such as Canada is allowing these people to be on the street and be exposed to such an environment. Neuroscience will tell you that your environment is one of the 3 major things that impact your mental health. Rehabilitation is the only answer,. Period.

Yes detox facilities are horrible about that. They just have minimum wage workers who turn a blind eye to withdrawals and go on with business as usual. We need a better system it is economically sound and smart too you can get these people back out into the economy healthy and ready. For some reason that just seems out of this world to this government, they would rather just have them die

I just had a heated discussion about this with my ex junkie husband.....
I keep telling him that drug addiction is a choice for almost all the adults users.... including him.
He, my husband, comes from a wealthy family, his parents put him through college, he had several very good jobs where he got paid more than what he deserved. He had so many opportunities in life but he decided to take drugs. I' ve been fighting for 30 long years a war I can't win. We lost everything because of him.
He had been in jail 4 times.... I'm afraid one of these days he is going to relapse.. again...why you may ask?....
Well because he doesn't want to grow up and take control of his pathetic life.
I'm just so fed up by the excuses he makes.
30 years of my life wasted trying to help this man.....He doesn't want to change.
    So...I give up on him!!!

Safe consumption sites don’t make the addict come face to face with their addictions - instead they allow addicts to remain in their cycle. Money, resources and the healthcare system are drained on a constant basis tending to the multitude of repeated over-doses. It is one thing for people to want help and is quite another for people to remain in their addiction. I can’t condone these sites.
