  • Oh we got another fun one towed in...a beached whale 2004 Volvo XC70 AWD from Virginia with 278k miles!
    According to the owner it was running fine, then started acting up and eventually refused to start.
    It was torn apart by one shop, and attempted to be put together by another shop.
    This poor Volvo is a BIG FAT MESS...fasteners missing, sensors loose, coils randomly plugged in...yikes!
    Let's start from scratch and see if we can get humpty dumpty put back together again correctly.
    Will it ever run again?

      as a volvo enthousiast with 2 v70,s i cried a lot. how can you f*ck up somebody's baby like this. the shop who did this should be closed down

      I don't get how someone can screw things up that bad. I mean that takes skills. I work on mine have the same car pretty much in manual transmission. And I have done allot of repairs. But nerver butchered anything anything near that bad even doing road side repairs just to get home. I tend to want mine to stay prestine :)

      It looked to me like someone had it all apart for a long time, the customer wanted to pull his car out and they said "screw it" , and just tossed everything back in the engine bay , front seat , back seat, trunk.......

      @@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics yes sure do. Manual 5 speed awd xc70 from 2001. 2.4l turbo tuned to around 300horse. 470nm approx. Just had the traction control removed with programming the abs and ecu. So it's very very fun :)

    i remember delivering a car to a home garage once like yours...the driveway was also uphill...the guy had a big winch mounted to the floor under the workbench so he didnt have to push the dead cars in

    Wow ! A real Mechanic left in the World ! When I worked on boats for a living my worst nightmare was taking on a project another "technician" walked away from , you have some amazing patience and diagnostic skills...

    My wife has that exact same car. 156,000 miles on it. With the exception of the radiator and maintenance. it's all original. I bought it and gave it to her. And she absolutely will not let me drive it. Smart lady.

    Hey Ivan you should sink some lag anchors into your garage floor and have a little 12v winch that you can drop on there to drag dead cars in.

    Man! I hate it when people butcher customer cars. This is infuriating. I absolutely refuse to take my vehicles to a shop. I've learned how to do everything myself from oil changes and brakes, to full engine rebuilds, LS Swaps, manual transmission swaps etc. Ivan you are truly the GOAT and I've learned a lot from you along the way! You and Eric O and the best

    I lost an engine because of a loose bolt in the timing system. What made it worse was the fact it was the oem dealer who did the work. They refused to warranty their own work.

    this is disgusting the way they delivered that car to you. Absolute laziness. Not putting parts back like the air cleaner cover and MAF assembly, not numbering coils before taking them off, which is BASIC stuff us weekend warriors know enough to do. Ivan- thanks for taking us through this; your troubleshooting makes SO MUCH sense. Very methodical and logical. You're amazing.

    Dealing with old work can be a nightmare....the more hands that touch it the more potential for problems especially when the hands that touch don't know what the heck they are doing.     I miss the old B23/B230 engines. Pull the fan and shroud, and you could almost climb in there with it. Line up the marks on the crank, cam, and distributor with marks on the belt - Done! Drive another 80,000 miles. Didn't hurt that they were also clearance motors.

      OTOH, a B230T was at best 160 horsepower, vs 220+ for a T5, and they got pretty terrible gas mileage, my 1992 740T wagon got maybe 16-18 MPG most of the time, and if I was feeling frisky, it could be quite a bit worse..

    I'd seriously like to see shops certified with Scanner Danner, Eric O, and Ivan level of knowledge! (I know I left out many great techs!)
    It would be good to have shops around the world to be able to send friends to and know the shop isn't a member of the *PARTS CANNON* club!

    My neighbor has this exact car except in blue. Has 500000 km’s. Did the heads a couple of years ago. Still looks like new when he polishes the car.

    Volvos are great, lasts very very long if you take care of them 😂. My current 07 xc70 diesel has 340k miles on it, and my nephews s80 2008 is currently on 553k miles 😊

      XC70 project wagon club!!!! Their fantastic platforms for projects and stupid cheap on the used market because of how undervalued wagons are in America and how common they are across the pond.
      Ya Volvos last forever if you take care of them with the basics. All my Volvos are well over the 300K mile mark and I’m thinking about getting another C30 because i sold mine off too soon when the market price of those shot up a while ago. I wanna do a AWD conversion from either V50 or S40 AWD and transplant it over to C30, then use a 3rd gen haldex pump from a XC90 to add some extra RWD baised launching.

    Ivan. Dang 😳??? I’ve seen some hackery butchered stuff in my life but. Dang that’s a train wreck shade tree Butchery. It’s a pain in the neck to go behind someone else’s work to fix correct the issue. Looking forward for part two Ivan.

    Love PHAD's diagnostic videos. I have learned a lot from his videos and appreciate his hard work in bringing us this content. I have an XC90 that was dropped off today with the 3.2 motor. Runs rough. No AC. I see that Ivan takes on all challenges. Not me. If a customer brings me a hard case I have to tell them they have to take it somewhere else. been a mechanic for 22 years now and I have issues with vehicles that have had no maintenance and are run into the gutter. My stress level is not where it should be with vehicles that are abused. This first part of the Butcher Shop should be a great video. Thank you Ivan.

    If the other shop removed the cylinder head, then mis-timing might not have been the original problem. I wonder what it was 🤔

      If the other shop removed the head, then timing is just the tip of the iceberg. They probably even reused the head gasket.

    If they had the head off the timing issue may have been caused by the previous shop. That may not have been the original issue. Nightmare!🤔

    I hate to see Volvos in this condition as a C30 owner with a T5 myself, but I know it is in very capable hands and you will have it back on the road in no time 😊. Thanks for sharing and all that you do.

    Wow, you were handed a pile from another shop. You are a good man for taking on this task. I know many shops would have flat turned down that job. I hope you put all your data and knowledge on a website for others to use. You are truly a fountain of knowledge and wisdom.

    It was painful to see the state that the car butcher left it in. God know how much money they charged the customer to fire the parts cannon, leave it in this state and not actually fix anything 🤬

    no wonder a lot of customer cars wind up in the scrap yard when there are shops that have no pride or care for a customers or car . good work Ivan I would not of taken that basket case on , but that's why we watch you .

    "What a frekin mess" and then the car is being pushed into Ivan's garage! Says it all! I have a 3.0 litre normally aspirated Volvo S80 and only take it to an Indy Volvo garage for work. Never mess with anything I don't understand!!

    no shade under that tree ! I have to say, these guys need to end up in court, trouble is the car is probably not worth enough to bother. In fact I am wondering if whoever did this was a mechanic at all, seems like they realised they had screwed it up and panicked. A few photos would have helped them.

    Ivan, this reminds me of my uncle that did brake jobs on my family cars many years ago. There was always extra parts when he finished and he told us they where parts that we did not need. LOL

    Everyone should have an Ivan nearby. I know people with great cars that can be salvaged and returned to the road, but they THINK they can't afford top tier mechanic work. They let neighbours and friends do the work and it just keeps getting deeper and deeper in the hole.

    Ivan, you are brave man! Just saw video where Wrenching with Kenny, just turn down a job that was Butchered by other Technicians. So many things were left disconnected that he didn't know if all the parts were there. So he didn't want to mess with the abortion case.

    Hello Ivan, this is so doggone cool! You diag is brilliant and you perfectly explained the mechanical events with the waveform results. I am just a DIYer and thought you would have to remove the timing belt to correct the cam / crank timing. That trick to loosen the belt tensioner and rotate the two cam gears making the cam gear / belt slip, was awesome. I love your videos.

    What a nightmare, Ivan! If it was done by a DIYer, it could be understandable but, by a shop?
    Judging from some sleazy shops around here, when customer drops a job, they might "scramble" things intentionally, but this is just too much.
    Wonder what else is wrong with this car... On to Part 2 🙂

    Reminds me of the time my father brought in his expedition to a shop because it was low on power. They told him it was the VVT and replaced it, week later it died climbing a hill. Brought it back to them and they burned the starter trying to diagnose the issue, which they charged him for, only to find the engine had jumped time and destroyed the valves. Later found out the transmission was stuck in limp mode making it feel underpowered, engine was fine (at the time). Ended up scraping the truck after that

    I paused the video at 1:30 just to comment. It doesn't need the boost pressure pipe and the MAS in order to run. BUT (and this is a big but. No pun intended) I see the coils are mounted and wired all wrong. Cylinders 2, 4 and 5 are mounted in the wrong orientation. And I'm sure a couple of those coils are cross connected. Prime facepalm moment there. lol. So, what else is wrong?
    Okay, I finished watching and all I have to say is wow! I am very impressed that it ever started. But luckily, these engines can withstand up to 4 teeth out of spec on the crank before the valves begin to hit the pistons. So, we should be safe there. Hopefully, they didn't do much damage to the flywheel with the backfire stopping the starter. What a mess.

    After you verify ALL that they BUTCHERED , he should sue them in Small Claims Court . I added that comment once and received a heated reply : " but I tried to fix it , I would put a mechanics lien on your car " ! I think you would be laughed out of court . They really should apply at Wal-Mart - where they can't damage anything ! Nice diagnosis .

    I feel sorry for all of you first the shop to hire someone that not fimiler with Volvo or pushing the mechanic to do this car , second the owner have to deal with all this mess ,third you being the last one in line to fix this mess but we know you are real good at your job 😊

    It's very hard to trust a mechanic. I try and do all my own work, but I wish I knew of someone in the Okc area that is as good as you and Eric O for the things that are past my knowledge level.

    The last person who touches it owns all of the previous mistakes. The torque values for the cylinder head were correct from delightful folks that had done this? I might suggest checking cylinder head torque. Was it checked for straightness? Perhaps springing for an oil analysis is a move to consider? And a tire between vehicles when pushing? Another Pine Hollow cliff hanging mystery. Enjoy your trip.

    Since those cam sensors are already loose I'd have removed them and looked to see if the cam slots were at least close to horizontal while getting it up on tdc. Those VVT sprockets aren't keyed to the cams. The cam alignment tool is the best way to do those, and a must if the sprocket bolts are going to be torqued down.

    It is possible the customer said "stop what you are doing, no more money, I want the car out" and this was the result. So, if that is true, use caution when making that play...
    I'm not saying the shop did good work; it's the opposite. So if your car is somewhat hostage at a shop that you no longer trust, consider the result of immediately demanding the car back.

    I don't so much mind working on something that's been to other shops before, as long as they knew what they were doing. But this is something else here. I can't believe how bad this situation has been made by someone who had zero clue what they were doing. The wiring on that thing looks butchered as well. That's one of those vehicles, if I had seen it first, I would have turned it down. Considering they had it towed hundreds of miles, you probably feel a bit obligated to try and do something with it though. I would let them know that as well, normally I would have turned this away because of the condition. Not only do you have to fix the original problem, but you have to diagnose and repair all the damage caused by someone who doesn't know what they are doing.

    As a Volvo tech, the coil harnesses are marked first and last with yellow or white tape wrapped around the harness

    Tip on moving "beached whales". Install some kind ofanchor point in the front of the garage (I made a small hole in the floor with my air hammer, installed a1/2" coupler nut so that the top of the nut would be flush with the floor. The downward portion of the nut had a 4" long bolt with a washer. Fill with bedding cement. Wait 24 hrs before using. Install a forged lifting eye in the top of the coupler nut. This can be removed when not in use.).
    Now you can use a come-a-long or winch to pull the beached whale inside !

      Yeah! It made me cringe to see one car pushing another. Scratches are inevitable and unnecessary!

    That big plastic hose pipe is for the Turbo! Disconnect that and it'll start but immediately shuts down!

    I got the same car, but the diesel engine (the legendary D5244T) and I had to fex some minor things when I bought it... I was able to get a OEM service manuals and I can say that they are amazingly good. So if you can get it, most likely it would be very easy to solf the mess from the butcher :D

    Ivan, get a 4x4 or a lawn tractor with a push bar or at least a big padded 2x8 to use for pushing beached whales into the garage. The bumper covers with thank you.

    hi Ivan done work on 5 cyl volvo engines you got to renew the aux belt regular as they can shread and the strings can get behind the crank pully and migrate into the bottom pully fill the teeth and cause timing to slip and normally valves get hit unless you are very lucky

    I remember back in tech school doing a timing belt on one of these… we hated it. Right down to the 10mm on the T50 to turn the cam.

    Ivan, I have a feeling that this isn't going to end well for the owner. I am confident that you will get it to run, but I think that some other butchered area will cause another problem after you give the car back to him.

    Even though this car is probably on its 3rd or 4th transmission, it doesn't deserve to be butchered like this! I'm fond of this generation of XC70 and it's been well taken care of. I hope you sort it out, and hope the customer gets compensation from the shop that messed it all up!

      @@PineHollowAutoDiagnosticsiirc the first few years had a dumb programming feature that was supposed to minimize “creep” in drive that did a good number of these fundamentally sound aisins in. Once Volvo got away from their silly “feature” the transmissions went right back to lasting many hundreds of thousands of miles like aisins tend to.

    You should set up a winch to drag vehicles into your garage and save both vehicles any paint loss. If remote controlled you could steer by yourself. Just need solid anchor point.

    I'm an electrician but I have seen that sort of butchery in my trade to be that of a Walmsley or someone whose like that.
    It looks like they didn't know what they were doing, they should've at least numbered the ignition coil connectors so that they go back onto the right ignition coil !
