  • Over a month after a crash at San Francisco’s West Portal Transit Station killed a family of four, the SFMTA has been getting input from residents and business owners about a plan to make the hub safer. But the plan is getting some pushback from some business owners. Sergio Quintana reports.

    What about all the car break ins, assaults on Asian elders, and shoplifting? Where are the swift plans to combat those tragic events? This is all for show cuz it is an easy fix to give the illusion that the talking heads are doing something productive.

    Why isn't the identity of the driver mentioned? Is there some sort of preferential treatment toward senior murder suspects?

      This story is about local pushback to proposed urban design changes. The accident is relevant to the proposal, as the proposal's objective is to increase safety. This is not a story about the accident itself, so how is the driver's identity relevant?
      In my opinion, the mention of the driver's age is also unnecessary, but it was probably included as an unconscious bias to imply most younger drivers would not have crashed. Whether this true or not, does not alter the fact that a change in road design could make the bus stop objectively safer for those who use it and prevent future tragedies.

      Why isn’t this lady in Jail!? A whole family was murdered- why isn’t there more information? So frustrating SF, do better and take this lady to court. There should be mandatory eye tests and neurocognitive tests for these seniors that refuse to give up their DL.

    Still… No one asks why the L line replacement is taking so long which is why this family was sitting at the bus stop instead of inside of the protected train station. The L Train has been a bus for years.

    Y'all designed this intersection poorly from its inception. Unlike all other tunnel entrances and exits of the tunnel portions of Muni built Pre-1980, this is the only one that is not grade separated, has it's own separate pathway from the tunnel to the intersection. The old line at Eureka/Castro, had its own little line that came off the street. Sunset Tunnel has it's own grade separated path into the tunnel, and that even connects to the Market Street Tunnel which has its own grade separated path into that as well. There really is nothing like that at West Portal. Everything opens up into a giant Shibuya Crossing without any of the safety. MAKE THE INTERSECTION SMALLER. Make the entire road essentially a grade separate path for the train down the center of it. There will be no more direct crossing at West Portal entrance, that will be closed to traffic as the barrier island for the separate railway that's slightly elevated will be running. If you need to cross, then you'll need to go down the street to the next intersection. Either that or you need to start installing bollards EVERYWHERE that rise out of the street when the MUNI is coming to prevent any traffic from getting through.

      @heyaisdabomb 24 дня назад

      A traffic light here would make a lot of sense. If you don’t let cars make left turns, parking becomes a lot harder. It’s already more difficult because of the no U turn, which most people just ignore. The reality is, you have to be able to loop freely to find parking, or you’re just creating more traffic which makes the streets more dangerous because you have to take longer loops to find parking. As it is under this proposal, if you go towards the station and can’t find parking, you will have to turn right, go a block, turn right, go two blocks, turn right, go two blocks, turn right, go a block, turn right, go a block, turn right, just to get to the other side of the street to look for parking. Looking times mean less people come and in general, more traffic, which is more dangerous. These changes would not have stopped this crash. Nothing about changing requires for old people or finally finishing the L train line so people can wait in the station instead of on the street.

    That intersection looks big enough for a roundabout. Maybe that would be a good redesign? Roundabouts are considerably safer for all road users, cost less than a traffic signal to build, and cost less to maintain.

      roundabout with a train?

    • @Awesome_Aasim
      @Awesome_Aasim 24 дня назад

      @@freewifi510 Yes it will work. Muni basically operates "trams" or "streetcars", and building rails in the roundabout is not going to be too hard. Alternatively, the roundabout could have a cutout to allow Muni vehicles to go through without any issue, while everyone else would have to go slowly around a circle.

      The SFMTA is a transit agency that is collecting community feedback for its proposed changes to make an intersection safer in response to a tragedy. Isn't this what they are supposed to do? It sounds like they are doing their jobs properly.

    West Portal needs to do what's right and make all of West Portal a car free zone! Also, turn a new leaf and be compassionate by allowing unhoused people to bring their homes into West Portal if there is not adequate shelter for them. This could be a model for other neighborhoods and cities.
