About 9 months ago I have installed an aftermarket Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in my 2014 BMW 550i F10. Since then, I have had many viewers ask me questions on how well it performs, what kinds of issues it has, the quality of the sound and connectivity and much much more. So, in this video, I go over the most common questions, I explain how to pick which unit will be needed for your BMW and give you my opinion on the experience overall. I also explain the difference between the CIC, NBT and EVO iDrives, so I hope that helps you pick the correct one!

Yes sir! Now I know what system I have in my 14 f07 and I know that the connection to my phone is far superior over the factory system. I can only connect maybe 50-60% of the time. And it’s also super nice to know it switches back and forth seamlessly. Once again I love this channel! I’ve even been able to share your videos with my friends with there Audi’s and Porscheaudi’s 😂. A few have bought the scanners you’ve reviewed.

Thank you for this wonderful follow up. I really appreciate it very much since I’m considering a third party module for the use of CarPlay. The 3G network has been discontinued since February 2022 in California and my real time traffic has been disabled. Now I’m looking for a CarPlay module that supports heads up display and radio among other features simultaneously on my X5 2014 NBT_M.
if you find such let me know :) As far as I know there are no systems supporting HUD or radio.

Hi, great video, both. I still have a question which I do not see anywhere. I only had experience with CarPlay on touch screen. I do see how the steering or iDrive wheel to go between selections.I think that works well and safer for most uses. But for the few times you need to type text, ie. destination for Maps, how does that work? Is there a pop up keyboard that you can select characters? I am leaning towards some models with screen replacements. I also wonder if the wheel still works when I have a touch screen. I don't think you know that answer, it depends on the model. Also, can't believe how many models there are out there, MMI and screen replacement with and without Andriod, just CarPlay and Android Auto.

I'm currently looking into the bimmer direct option, does it actually have wireless android auto also or is the wireless option only for carplay?
@@MrUser999999 The BimmerDirect unit has all of that actually. It gives you the option to do wireless or wired for both CarPlay and Android Auto. I have one in my F32 and it is awesome. Good customer service too

Wow wow wow. I've been battling to take incoming calls with an idrive joystick but able to make outgoing calls. With your video on choosing car Bluetooth or Apple carplay Bluetooth, you just sold my dilemma in South Africa and money because I was considering buying a touch screen android head unit costs US600
So what exactly did you do? I have the same issue (I cannot take incoming calls) ?

Hello! What are the microphone settings you used? I see X3? Did you follow the settings on the manual or let the system auto adjust?
What do you recommend if the screen wasn’t optioned on your car? I bought a 2009 Z4 35i couple months ago but it doesn’t have the screen. Can I purchase the screen+ the aftermarket car play? What would you suggest? Thanks

I have a 2013 535i; which model do I need? (the NBT idrive and EVO look the same to me)
Does it rotate/auto sense between using Android auto and Apple car play well or does it have to be reconfigured every time you change from apple to android phone? Did not see any split screen. Ie phone call or radio controls at same time as navigation going. And phone calls leave the mmi and thus you cannot use GPS and phone at same time which is useless if on trip. The unit someplace put in cannot do this and looki to have it ripped out if this one does that. Thanks!

How about the volume/mute button? On my carplay i can't stop the music using that button, only mute(

I have installed Carplay Navigatie to my BMW F11 and has issues to connect wireless via carplay from unit. Did you experienced that?
My f11 shows the original screen first and then when I hold the menu button for 3s switch to the new one. How to change that ?
Do you miss a touchscreen sometimes? How do you enter navigation addresses?
Be aware, NBT is not just from 2014 and onwards.
I have one of the late 2013 Pre LCI F11 and i have already NBT.

Great video, I have a very serious issue if anyone coud help. Was working fine for a couple hours then all of a sudden the driver side speaker started hissing loudly and not playing music. Anyone help with this? Also when on a phone call people can hear me but I canot hear them.

Use the provided aux cable and route it to the oem aux port, it will solve your sound quality problem

I belive you may use the original mic for the nbt models, but need to use the unit's mic for CCC and CIC. Is that right?
I think you’re correct. I needed a mic on my CiC install, but not on the NBT head unit
After installation of the CarPlay kit my BMW X3 NBT - HUD and vehicle information status no longer display. They are just zero out and the CarPlay kits works great just no digital speedometer or gas consumption information....thoughts on this as i followed the installation without issue
You must have disconnected one of the connectors for the harness. This car also had a HUD and I had no issues. Do your steering wheel controls works? I suspect it could have been not clicked in all the way or something like that.

I have used both Apple Carplay and Android Auto. The latter works flawlessly, integrated like an OEM. CarPlay on the over hand not so good. I have had complains about echo during calls and never managed to get iPhone to release the Audio to the Car BT regardless of “using Car’s BT Phone” set to On. When a call comes in I can see the iPhone automatically switch BT to Carplay. Did you resolve this issue ?

Run the Aux cable from the head unit to the arm rest, it will then use direct connection instead of through CANBUS

How did you get fullscreen mode? Mines split screen and can't work out how to change it
It was full screen by default. I wish I had split screen, but I don't think I have that option.
if you are using android auto, it will be only split screen (if you have wide screen) that's the way android auto is made . for apple carplay, it will be full screen all the time

Can I play youtube with MMI unit installed to my F10?
You won't be able to play RUclips via CarPlay, BUT you airplay to the unit and play w/e you want from your phone.
I took my car to get this installed and Right after the installation It messed up Comfort access and my car won’t recognize my key fob also you won’t be able to get acess to bimmer code using any adapter it will crash at 15% .I am trying to get some who knows much about it and get it removed from my car …!I got 535i xdrive 2014.
They just have messed something up. I’ve had no issues with any of those problems! Hope you get it fixed or removed!

any idea how to get the siri working? mine doesn’t pick up the mic.
Mine worked from the smart. Make sure you have configured the device correctly for the microphones. If your car didn't come with mics or they were defective, you may need to use the aftermarket one. Otherwise, check the settings to make sure you have the 'OEM' one selected.

You select AUX, but there is nothing actually plugged into the AUX socket.

What unit do I get for a 2018 bmw m2?
Your car has the iDrive Professional NBT EVO, so you don't need a unit. You just need programming and you can get it activated without installing anything. (I haven't done this myself, but I'm like 95% sure). Of course, double check my info here as Ms are always a little different from regular 2-3 series.
