People in the comments are bugging. I've watched a ton of different videos on installing the MMI box and this is by car the best one I've seen. Great camera work and loved the detailed instructions on the connectors and clips. And the video is under 30 mins
I’ve been debating between this unit and a screen replacement type unit. The screen should be the obvious choice as the factory unit in my BMW 550I GT is dull and a little boring. Thanks for the video. Loved it except the cringe worthy moments when you used a power drill to tighten/loosen screws. Pro tip !! Never use a power drill for cabin related trim pieces. You could possibly use a 12 V or even a 9 V power screwdriver but even then I would not suggest this at all. It just takes one small amount of extra force and you have stripped screws so I would change this if I were you. Anyway, not to take away from the video as I appreciate it have an amazing day.
Hope it helped you make a decision! We do have full head unit upgrades which normally include an upgraded OEM screen. You definitely need to be careful when you using a drill. I work on these regularly and I think I've ever only stripped one. The torx bits BMW uses are much harder to strip than traditional Philips style screw heads but for anyone that doesn't do this regularly I would definitely recommend using a screwdriver.
Excellent vid, how do you stop the audio from going into mute mode when you put the car in reverse? If its an F10 issue, does it have to be coded out? thanks..
With something like this installed, if the 5 series has backup and side mirror cameras, do they still come on as normal [automatically in reverse, and with the press of the camera button], even when in android auto mode? My main curiousity in thinking about these kinds of upgrades is how much of the existing systems work exactly how they did before.
To save potential installers any disappointment, this video specifically applies to F-series cars with the NBT head unit. Plenty of older F-series cars have a CIC head unit, in which case the install is quite a bit more involved: you will need additional cabling to the iDrive selector, the AUX input and the overhead microphone.
@@puremedics2638 according to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_iDrive your car will have NBT. But google some CIC and NBT images to be sure, the interfaces are easy to tell apart.
Hello Sunday Drive, Great video! Best tutorial with the 5 series MMI installation. I have a question, I just couldnt manage to get the block behind the heads unit to fit. There is a small dip under the head unit, but it wouldn’t fit the block. Is there any tricks that you can share with us regarding the block?
Awesome video. You made it like a piece of cake. I have a question. Do you still see the navigation from carplay google maps on the HUD or should i resort to the oem MMI navigation for the HUD to display directions?
No BMW regardless of DIY or factory carplay can use the HUD with apple maps... this is something apple is working on and will soon be released later in iOS14 or iOS 15... even then, the MMI DIY unit may not work.
Glad it helped! If your car came with a camera from the factory you'll just need to select it in the settings, nothing else to do. If it didn't, install the new one you can get as an optional add on with the kit. It replaces the factory trunk handle. Just run a wire up to the front and plug it in. If you have a manual transmission an additional wire will need to be tapped. If you are unsure of the process, bimmer-tech has official installers in your area.
If the iPhone is connected via the MMI will it also play audio from other apps like RUclips music, even if the MMI does not have the RUclips music app? How would this work? Also for incoming calls, will the car's Bluetooth detect the call or will the MMI detect the call? If the call is answered which system will show the call details? The car's infotainment or the MMI?
Same question I just posted ? Can you have phone paired in I drive and also in CarPlay and how does it choose. Also, does the steering wheel phone button work in CarPlay?
@@texascfo Ok I will try to explain this as simply as possible after using the carplay for about a month. The car play has an option that you can set "Use car Bluetooth" If you turn this on and pair your phone with the car and carplay, all car Bluetooth features like function key to call, instrument cluster phone number display, using the scroll wheel to access the last called numbers etc will work as expected. The phone will route all VOIP audio calls to the car and all VOIP video calls to the carplay. Since the carplay works on wifi, it will show the dialer screen even though the car Bluetooth is enabled. The only downside is that at times the phone will not know where to route the audio to. So you may have to select the Bluetooth device manually. For VOIP voice calls, even if you set carplay, the phone will not send the audio to the carplay but rather only to the car. The biggest advantage of using the car Bluetooth is that, when an incoming call is detected, the car will automatically switch the car audio from radio to phone. This will not happen in the case of the car play system. The carplay works well with all music apps like youtube, youtube music, amazon music, spotify etc. Do not use the carplay eq. It tends to ruin the audio quality. The steering phone button works. If you disable "Use car Bluetooth" when you press the button carplay will pull up the iOS dialer. If you use car Bluetooth, you will get the car dialer. Now the biggest downside is the battery drain on the phone. There is no way to disable the default dashboard map. Because of this, the phone drains the battery even when you are not using maps for navigation. So I disable carplay from the Bluetooth menu when not in use. I also noticed that when there are many devices in the car, the carplay has trouble connecting. Hope this helps :-)
@@clockit-app thank you. I am confused as you state in one place use car Bluetooth a d below usable car Bluetooth. What I believe you are saying is that the phone button on steering wheel will not work with car Bluetooth enabled and you must disable that - Correct? Right now I have car Bluetooth tooth enabled and I do not have phone pair with oem I drive but. Only have it paired with CarPlay and when car starts it goes to car play automatically. When I tried iPhone paired with oem and also with CarPlay, it had trouble connecting as most time the oem idrive world connect and I had to go to phone and so connect so cat play would pick up. If I have them both paired , maybe if I doable use car bT phone, maybe that will be the solution as really want to use the steering wheel button but also have car play running?
@@texascfo If you really need to use the steering phone function. From the carplay, disable use car Bluetooth and then remove your device from the car Bluetooth settings. Now when you are connected to the carplay the call button on the steering will pull up the carplay ios phone dialer.

Also, does the steering wheel phone button work to make calls or does this go away with the mmi? If not, how does it work between the idrive paired phone and the same phone paired in CarPlay?
While you can leave the phone connected to the car, some features may not with fully when routing calls. What we suggest for customers is that they delete the phone from the vehicle and only pair it to carplay and make and receive calls through that. You can long press the voice button on the steering wheel and it will activate siri and you can make calls through that via carplay
Great video and a DIY . But why would someone replace the traditional navigator system with car play? Maybe preference but honestly in my opinion , the traditional navigator is awesome and with its split screen , you will get more driving direction on the right segment ( lovely ❤️ ) and further instructions in the speedometer section with a lot of smart details while driving , so I am a bit confused . F10 is a near perfect design especially with function
You might have a newer interface, such as NBT EVO. I myself have an NBT (Non EVO) interface, even though it has pretty okay features, navigation is the only one that's lacking since the roads have been arranged a little bit differently over the past 10 years - maybe something that the update can fix, but for the price, I think it'll be better to go with AA/CP for Waze
After installed and synced, it will launch when then phone is connected. I'm not sure if the port will charge as the port is mainly intended for updating the unit if new firmware is released. The phone connects to carplay wirelessly

Hi! Responded to your email.
What year is that car?
I am interested in this. Question is I see the pairing of the CarPlay by with iPhone. What happens to my existing paired iPhone in Idrive? Are they both paired and how does CarPlay select?
Also, does the steering wheel phone button work to make calls or does this go away with the mmi? If not, how does it work between the idrive paired phone and the same phone paired in CarPlay?
While you can leave the phone connected to the car, some features may not with fully when routing calls. What we suggest for customers is that they delete the phone from the vehicle and only pair it to carplay and make and receive calls through that. You can long press the voice button on the steering wheel and it will activate siri and you can make calls through that via carplay
Can i be done to a 2016 550i? If not what can be done?
most likely! email me the last 7 digits of your vin to cliff@tsd-motorsports.com and I would be happy to check for you.

Does it automatically turn on when you start the car?
Your phone will automatically connect after you've connected it the first time when you get in the car
I have question about the USB port, does it charge the phone too.
And also want to know, is this MMI run it’s self on the screen or every time, I have start it manually.
After installed and synced, it will launch when then phone is connected. I'm not sure if the port will charge as the port is mainly intended for updating the unit if new firmware is released. The phone connects to carplay wirelessly
yes, it will charge your phone automatically
