  • Life before death.
    Strength Before Weakness.
    Journey before Destination.
This is an animatic I've been working on for the past year and a half. While working in professional animation projects I learned a lot on how to make this type of cinematic storyboards and being a fan of both "The Stormlight Archives" and "The Black Piper" music I was inspired to create a fictional opening credits cinematic of an anime-style "The Way of Kings" series. I hope you all enjoy it!

Szeth falling down the hallway was truly epic. This is why i want a Stormlight series to be animated instead of live action.

That really is the best part. Both Szeth parts are as it really captures how I feel when rereading it. His world is just a near never ending state of falling and killing. It tumbling and turning around him as he just moves through it ending the unfortunate lives between him and his target.

@@SurgeXsI believe he says that most likely will not happen because, and this is me paraphrasing but its roughly what he said, "There is no real audience for animation among adults in today's day and age". Personally, I feel this isn't true, but I can see why people believe this. However, I believe this WoB is older by a few years and the animation industry has recently grown significantly in popularity, especially in the anime corners of media. So we'll see.

These books would be absolutely wasted with live action. No live action movie in the last while has lived up to the expectations of the book, especially fantasy action books. With animation, you can get exactly the effects and movements you want, exactly the fantastical elements and magic. Even this random two minute animated fan adaptation was better than a lot of the live action movies/shows recently. Examples include the ATLA movie and show, and the PJO movie and show. This was beautiful.

EXACTLY!! I came to the same conclusion about 3/4 of the way through the first book. Yeah it’d be cool to see a live action adaptation but all the stuff that goes on, the shard plate, the stormlight, Kaladin’s spear techniques, all of that, would be difficult as hell if not expensive beyond belief. Much easier to animate everything and to keep it faithful to the books

      1) 1:27 This is a super dramatic scene with a lot of charter implication. This scene reveals the result of that scene. As soon as the step into the ally the reader will know whats about to happen. When we are supposed to be in Shalans perspective, who doesn't know whats about to happen and is so panics she hasn't considered. I think this is significant enough to warent a change.
      2) 1:31 again, a dramatic seen we don't see coming, it supposed to be a surprise in this high tension seen.
      3) 1:36 this is literally the climax of the book.
everything else, is good, it shows seens that are significant, but you wont know what they mean until the story tells you.

This is AMAZING! This is exactly how I would want a adaptation of Stormlight to feel. Really lean into that shonen anime epicness that the books give, but without compromising on the depth of character. If I’m not standing and pumping my fists at the season finale, you’re doing it wrong.

Guro, I have read everything Sanderson has written and I think you capture an opening for Way of Kings perfectly. It is still a sketch, but you nail every beat. I have seen so many amateurish attempts at evoking the Stormlight Archives Series in video but this is the best by far. Keep up the inspired and awesome work.

OMG what an incredible animation I'm stunned. It expresses all the stormlight mood and feeling, really nice job guys. In addition, I think you missed a little detail. In the fight against the Chasmfiend, the shardblade doesn't really cut the legs, it "cuts the soul" leaving them useless and dead, but not severed. It is just a detail, but I think it's an important one. Terrific job even so. I can't wait to see the "Words of radiance" one guys.

Eh, you can assume Adolin cut them earlier and Dalinar is just following up, so it still works.

yooooo this is sick as hell!! Incredibly well done, the way you captured the emotions and the movement! If there's ever an adaptation of these books, they're gonna have to do the lashings like you depicted them in the hallway. Breathtaking, honestly!
