You are one brave dude. Having blades coming back at you in their revenge death throes when they break is very dangerous, and you have all those cuts to prove it. Be careful and wear a Kevlar vest, and other protections.
So, when a tornado passes over this area. The people in the next village will all be shredded to pieces from all the broken tips raining down on them from the sky..
Thanks for all of your hard work & painful results. Your testing just proves that with all of the alloys & hardening techniques, there is still no knife that is indestructible. All knife enthusiasts should view this video as training that knives are not crowbars & should only be used for cutting within their limits.
The Cold Steel with the 3v blade was an excellent example of the importance of proper heat treatment. 3V normally has a very high impact resistance but if the person who does the heat treatment goes way above the austenitic temperature before quenching it will increase the grain size and produce a much more brittle product. Stress relieving (tempering) and lowering the hardness won't help either in this case because it won't decrease the grain size.
Maybe the HT was botched. They also advertised their CPM3V at 60 or 61 HRC, which is good for edge retention and average abuse, however it weakens the toughness of CPM-3V (really good around 58 HRC). In the end, their 3V knives are not better than their old AUS8 japanese blades or their San Mai knives. I am still curious about the first batch of Warcraft tantos. This knife was quite durable, it seemed aimed at toughness more than edge durability. I've had both in hand, and the Tanto X seemed harder. I think the HT was a bit softer on the original Warcraft Tanto, maybe I'm wrong... Could be great to test one "a la Joe X" (and a shame to destroy the knife if it was properly HT).
This was torture for those blades, but I like to see this because of the "what if" factor in survival or possible last ditch use. It does show what some will take and others won't. Some others break easily under little stress. I really enjoy your content on the destruction tests on these knives and I appreciate all the time and money you waste on showing what works and what doesn't. Take Care and Stay Safe.
This Video illustrate a few points very well! -"Knives have a Direction for Striking hard objects!": When hitting the edge on the stone/steel Bar knives rarely break, beeing hit from the back breaks them quite often. -"Horizontal stress is the Killer!" : Basically no matter what Knife, once He sticks it in the stump and leans on it, the knife is done. -"Cutting performance ruins Durability." every time i know the knife he is testing cuts very well and precice, it breaks Instantly. Thats what cutting optimized edges give you! -"Even modern Stainless Super Steel is not as Tougth as Old High Carbon." The "Microstructure" is just too different! So i think, if you want to build a JoeX Survivor knife, it should be at least 5mm Thick, of a High Carbon steel (1085), not harder than 55Hrc, with a short and thick doube edge (Think Gladius), And no longer than 20cm/8" to limit leverage! Shame i am no bladesmith :(
The last point is totaly stupide. It's like asking to screw with hand to avoid messing up the screw. With same logic we could say that unsharpened knives are better because their edge won't get any less sharp. Knife's size has to be chosen according to what you need it for. Not toughness. It wouldn't make sens. If you need that much leverage/strength, and the big one breaks, then, for the same task with a smaller one, you would have to apply even more strength,, and it would probably break too.

Joe X isn’t in bed with Cold Steel. He slammed the failures here. No one is perfect, but Tops and Becker and Esee are laughably bad relative to their claims. At least a high percentage of CS get a “pass” by making it further along before they fail.
@@DONK0 Esee is excellent for an American designed and made, old fashioned 1095 "rusty", and it's reasonably priced. They have a no questions asked return for replacement if blade breaks and their advertising and word of mouth implies breaking is nearly impossible. So it's ok for Joe X to bring them back to reality. Based on Joe's tests, if they are going to break anyway, I'd rather have stainless steel. (Becker knives are also 1095 but sold for their design, a little humbler but all these knives that talked up full tangs, 1095, replaceable screw on handles are essentially Rambo fantasy knives and it's good for a wake up call; on the other hand the $39 Cold Steel SR1 Lite FOLDER outlasted mist of them.)

Great compilation Joe! :-) I think you showed that if you want true survival combo, all you need is SR1 Lite, some "SP" by Ontario or Terava and kukri styled machete by CS. :-) And this trinity is even cheaper than some overpriced knives.... PS- I have CS Drop Forged Surivalist and expected more (based on your test). But I think it is still good knife. It is still cheaper than KB Beckers.

ANY "good" steel blade will break under THOSE conditions. The only knife that will not break when struck against rock and steel, is a BUTTER KNIFE! Because it is made from soft (mild), steel with no carbon content, so it will bend instead of breaking. The desirable quality of 'good knives', is that they hold an edge and not roll over. For that, you need a combination of certain alloys (chromium, molybdenum, vanadium, tungsten, etc.), carbon and heat treatments. A straight razor will shave the hair off your face, but you can break the blade easily. This demonstration of yours proves NOTHING!
Sorry Ron, but you need watch his other videos of knives that did survive or survived much longer. The truth is that companies like Mora and Glock figured out how to heat treat their blades to make them not only cut well but to be nearly indestructible. All at a low price. The Terava knives from Varusteleka in Finland are also awesome and affordably priced. So are many of Cold Steel's blades and machetes. I don't blame all the knife companies for this though. Many of them fell prey to idiots over the last 10 years who screamed "edge retention!" for survival knives. I say "idiots" because they were all urban/suburban basement dwellers who only wanted edge retention because they were too scared to learn how to sharpen their own knives. Men 50 years ago would have laughed their butts off at these lame and overly soft Poppin' Fresh Doughboys. But things are going full circle and men are becoming men again and they are learning to sharpen their blades and want knives that will truly last for their hard earned money.
Awesome video Joe X! I am glad to report that I do NOT own ANY of these overhyped/overpriced bullshits. I was thinking about getting an El Chete.. but not any longer.. I am sure many Fanboys will be disappointed that their favorite knives are garbage!
@@awesomereviews1561 🧐. My large knife is a tool. At 11” blade, It cuts , hammers, and prys. I am a first responder in Alaska. I’m on call 24/7 on an island of 89 natives. Sure, right tool for the job and all that. But the tools are only good if you have them during an emergency. My halligans tool sits in my quad, but I’m on my bicycle 99% of the time. I had to gain entry into our local bar- the pilot left his wallet in there. My knife pried it right open, no damage. I tested my custom knife right out of the box, chopped thru a steel 55 gallon drum. That checked the tip and edge. I told the maker I would. And that if I had to bust open a drum for boat inspection, cut thru a house to save a life , etc. and if all I had was the knife he made and I damaged/broke it, he would replace it. That knife lives on my hip. I have jogged with it- mile + 1/2, worked out with it, mountain climbers, sit-ups, food preparation, etc. Your gear/kit/kitchen sink is only good if you have it on you. I paid less than you think-$1200. But , that is WAY more than the brokies who watch this channel would fork over for their EDC. Their EDC consists of three folders ( folders 🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤣), a 4” prybar, micro light, and a challenge coin. But if all you do is open your Amazon boxes for your RUclips channel , buy your coffee at Starbucks to stay awake in your cubicle, that works!

Hi Joe. If i may suggest something? Your vids are entertaining and show the thoughness of steel and the quality of heat treathment. But in my opinion it would become really informative, if you would do a cutting test ( maybe rope ) so see how long it will stay sharp, before destroying it. This way it would show, for what purpose this steel is really made and what is teh best combination of sharpness and toughness. best regards SOC
There's gonna be ALOT of people today holding their precious little fanboi SUPER DUPER KNIFE in hand, wondering if it's gonna betray them by not living up to the advertising hype. Oh the wailing and nashing of teeth will be EPIC! 🗡️🗡️🗡️🗡️🗡️🔪🔪🔪🔪😭
Well yeah Im plenty happy with my S35VN, as we can see S35VN holds up very well (check the recon 1 series) although mine is a Code 4 the Tanto tip gives it extra strength also Joes Code 4 sadly is a Lemon....it chipped out way to fast. How I know? I took my knife out and thought never its that chippy turned out mine didn't chip. Heat Treatment is of utmost importance, if the HT is shit you can have whatever super steel you have and it will get outperformed by plain VG10.
While i do like your content joe, i think it would be better to have several categories of stress test. For example, a batoning wood test, a chopping into larger tree limbs and brush test, basically more tests that would actually reflect how useful a given blade is for what i would actually use it for. I never bend a knife in wood, or bang it on concrete, so while they are somewhat helpful, they dont really tell me what i need to know.
I laughed so hard at the test of the TOPS operator 7 , Without even reading any review on TOPS with a brand name like that i knew its would sucks! I was impressed by how fast the ESEE one broke tho.
Becker just dominating this list 😂😂😂 was expecting that. Didn't expect any Esse blade to be on it but alright, ones not made for any pounding were on it. Also Opinel didn't stand a chance, in Croatia we consider it knife for apple peeling 😂
I know alot of people hate abuseive knife tests but i think its very important to know when i knife will fail and not many do these harsh tests like this
those vids are priceless brother...pure form of information...this reminds me of old russian ak factory tests...thing got dead-screwed to a steel rail to completley suppress shot vibrations/recoil and loaded with "endless" ammo belts to see at what point the gun would explode...turns out neverd did explode but melted from overheating...crazy stuff
Joe, thanks for all the testing you have done. Based on what you have tested have you determined any trends about which type of steel seems to hold up the best to the abuse? I have been a fan of 1095 blades but it really seems like they tend to struggle with your tests.
The beckers do ok but probably because they're so super thick. Comparing a 6.5mm Becker with a 5mm lionsteel is apples and oranges, whatever steel they use.
Love it! Insert "I can't believe the (Brand & product name) didn't perform well" comment. Great compilation package. Joe X isn’t in bed with Cold Steel. He slammed the failures here. No one is perfect, but Tops and Becker and Esee are laughably bad relative to their claims. At least a high percentage of CS get a “pass” by making it further along before they fail.
yeah, u said it !!!! separate the good from the ugly!!!!!!!!!
I thought esee is pretty good?
some were good!
@@DONK0 Watch more of JOEX's tests on this channel an judge for yourself.
Mowing the lawn in your area must be considered an extreme sport requiring body armor with all the blade shards littered everywhere 😮
yeah, it is an olympic sports here!
Very good video
thanks!
Vaya, me has salvado de hacer algunas malas compras 😀, vi muchos de esos cuchillos en ofertas atractivas pero al final no valdrian la pena, muchas gracias
gracias amigo!
GOTTA LOVE THAT RING!
yeah!
It is still cheaper than KB Beckers.
i agree with your choices!!!
Very enlightening. Thanks a lot.
thanks my Brasil friend!
Pathfinder saw the bricka and ran for the hills
Yeah!😂😂😂
How about the TOPS FDX 66 though?
I know it will be not that easy to grip, but I would love seeing you try!
cool!
The more pieces they break, the more overpriced they are because you can use the pieces separately. Like a multitool 😂
I'm pretty sure that all the knife manufacturers hate you, but I'm sure that the folks at Tops have a special place for you in their greedy little hearts😂
That's why we love you, my friend. Perfect, as allways!!!🍻👏💪👍🍻
yeah that could be!!!cheers my friend! Tops will be my place to go when i visit the USA! i want to do some cardio training with those dudes, i think they need it!

In the Video you showed the Gerber Prodigy but what about the LMF 2 or the Strongarm. Shouldn't those be in this Video too?
i would have listed the LMF 2 too, but i could not find the "old" video footage!!!!!
Why would the strongarm be here? Joe x has already proven its strength
Check out the previous video about the Survivors to see the Strongarm 🦾
You have made me very happy about some of my collection
Thanks
cool!
have to say i love your videos and everytimeyou record you kinda put your life on the line what if you get hypotermia or blade brakesand fyes on your neck or eye. but still i am happy that you do these. love you bro.

Cool, welcome❤
When people pay a lot for knives they give em an easy life - so they never discover that theyre shit
true!
@Joe X,hope you destroy a Sog Seal Pup Elite .
Hopefully!
Bahahah awesome! So the operator 7 held up the best I guess ❤
yes awesome blades those tops!
This demonstration of yours proves NOTHING!
u are so wrong, check my vids bro!
u may learn something! because i think u dont know too much!
Correct
Awesome. 😎
thanks!
Awesome video Joe X!
I am glad to report that I do NOT own ANY of these overhyped/overpriced bullshits.
I was thinking about getting an El Chete.. but not any longer..
I am sure many Fanboys will be disappointed that their favorite knives are garbage!
i would not say garbage, but overpriced, for 300 $$$ i expect excellence, not a break at the f..ing brick!!! cheers my friend!
Overpriced! El crape costs what…$199 at the most? Pay $200 for a large fixed knife you get what you pay for- crap
Well, those are knives not crowbars… It’s good to know the limits but their are not meant to replace a crowbar.
My official knife tester. 👍👍🇺🇲
cool!!!!!
Tops BOB is a great knife! I baton 3.5 inch wood all day long with it
nice!
No surprises: Schrade and Ka-Bar Becker - these only seem tough
Too expensive for what they offer: Fällkniven, Buck, T.O.P.S., Lionsteel (nice design though)
Light duty stuff: Civivi, Spyderco, Opinel - your talents are wasted on these JOE X
Disappointing: Ontario, Cold Steel, Condor - most of their stuff is good and tough, it's sad to see some of their designs blow up like that :s
No one cares: Esee - their warranty is great, shipping costs suck though
good review my friend!!!!
Opinels are fun when i tired or hangover because the test ends quick!
I can't believe all of these knifes just snapp or break on one spin wack WOW
for the price they have, unaccaptable!!!
@@joex totally agree about that. A while ago I looked at the tops field craft I like it but for 178.00. more than I would want to spend.

Hi Joe. If i may suggest something?
Your vids are entertaining and show the thoughness of steel and the quality of heat treathment. But in my opinion it would become really informative, if you would do a cutting test ( maybe rope ) so see how long it will stay sharp, before destroying it. This way it would show, for what purpose this steel is really made and what is teh best combination of sharpness and toughness.
best regards
SOC
did some rope in my vids, not my thing!!!
There's gonna be ALOT of people today holding their precious
little fanboi SUPER DUPER KNIFE in hand, wondering if it's gonna betray them by not living up to the advertising hype.
Oh the wailing and nashing of teeth will be EPIC! 🗡️🗡️🗡️🗡️🗡️🔪🔪🔪🔪😭
yeah, fanboy dreams destroyed, i think i need to check on those bladeforums the next days! haha!!
@@legendaryschander78 cool!
I enjoy your videos. Entertainment... nothing more
MARLBORO!
Ok cool!
what do you think of the Ares, it is among the only boxes that have stood up to your tests, do you trust this knife to survive?
it did fantastic in my test!
I laughed so hard at the test of the TOPS operator 7 , Without even reading any review on TOPS with a brand name like that i knew its would sucks! I was impressed by how fast the ESEE one broke tho.
TOPS OP7 break was legendary, ESEE Junglases break too, but not soo easy!
You are doing a good job! Congratulations Joe X! 👍🤝👏👏👏
thanks Thor!
Becker just dominating this list 😂😂😂 was expecting that. Didn't expect any Esse blade to be on it but alright, ones not made for any pounding were on it. Also Opinel didn't stand a chance, in Croatia we consider it knife for apple peeling 😂
greets to Croatia!°
Saw just as many Tops sh*t the bed here.

those vids are priceless brother...pure form of information...this reminds me of old russian ak factory tests...thing got dead-screwed to a steel rail to completley suppress shot vibrations/recoil and loaded with "endless" ammo belts to see at what point the gun would explode...turns out neverd did explode but melted from overheating...crazy stuff
cool, thats how u should test a rifle!!!!!
Joe, thanks for all the testing you have done. Based on what you have tested have you determined any trends about which type of steel seems to hold up the best to the abuse? I have been a fan of 1095 blades but it really seems like they tend to struggle with your tests.
AUS8 and SK85 is nice!
The beckers do ok but probably because they're so super thick. Comparing a 6.5mm Becker with a 5mm lionsteel is apples and oranges, whatever steel they use.
Loved it.
