- Finally opening up the transaxle on the Murray to see why it's been giving me problems, PLUS comparing the internals with a Peerless 820

had a Murray similar to yours. different pulley set up though. it would run about 50mph.
the transaxle was getting pretty tired. missing 2nd and 3rd. wouldn't stay in any other gear without forcibly holding the shifter. I decided to give it hell. got her to top speed and slammed it in reverse.
The case shattered into pieces. gears all over the Rd.
only thing left was both axle ends bolted to the frame with the wheels jammed up into the fenders at an angle.
that was a pretty scary ride lol.
Matt Hudson - my first mod ( basically stock cept for pulleys) was a 80s craftsman. i shattered some gears in it , would maybe do 30mph.
2nd one was a 18hp twin widebody murray stock with a 6speed shift on the go, i got that upwards of 45mph using pulleys n golf kart tires. i took the trans apart, cleaned it up, greased everything added gear oil n never had any issues, altho it had plenty of gear noise( loud whirring) when deaccelerating. that thing was scarey fast, i took it apart.
Matt Hudson I have a craftsman lt1000 that does 74 and I took it out in the snow banged it from 1st to 3rd wide open with about 30hp and 50 ftlbs she did the same thing as yours.
COMMENT OF THE DAY AWARD HAHAHA
instablaster...
great video, really happy to see you in the new garage. my worst transaxle story is when i blew my locker up half way, the weld still caught the other spider gear so it was still locked but had a lot of play in one of the wheels
So happy to see more murray! It's been too long!!!
Please make more vids !! Your the best !! Thumbs up if you agree !! 😁😁
Thanks for making the video. Keep them coming. I really enjoy them. What type of oil should i use when im refilling a transaxle? what type os silicone?
i got this 90s weedeater tractor ( call it a craftsman) - got it running, made a pass around the yard and it locked the trans.
i cracked open the trans n found a bunch of rust on the main gear shaft, i took it apart, wet sanded the rust off, greased it up n slapped it back together. it still works great today👍
dangerous toys56 ... That gives me hope. By the way, I haven't seen you around for awhile!
FearlessFront (Todd Christopher) - yea been busy workin👍
Good luck. Any chance that wore down bull gear edge would cause things to bind up and cause the issue?
Hey Todd, How do compare the bigger tractors vs the smaller mowers off road wise? pros and cons of both? Thanks
i guess your channel got ya feelin like a rockstar!! u go boyy!
When you put new oil in it, put some Lucas Oil Transmission Fix, you can buy it at Walmart, TSC, Autozone, places like that, and it's $12 for 16 oz, love the stuff, works miracles!!!
I have a peerless 930 on My mower should i replace it with my extra mst 205
Happy New Year to you awesome Video
I bought a Roper tractor, had a Foote 4 speed in it, but only 1st gear, 2nd gear, and sometimes reverse worked. So I pulled it apart, and found that 3rd and 4th had no teeth left on the gears, and reverse was missing a lot of teeth! Not only that, but it also had a snapped shift key, and a wobbling input shaft. It was the worst transmission I've ever pulled apart
I love MST'S! I had one in my craftsman "RATical" and it held strong for a surprising time. Im down to my last spicer 4 speed in it now, next summer i hope to revisit the mst 206
I have a old lawnmower that I’m totally doing a thing with but on the other side does this mean more videos?
i really like your vids keep it up!
I have a peerless 205 transaxle and I was wondering how much oil the transaxle needs and also where to find oil seals for it
I’m about to make a mudding mower what is the best thing I can do to help it get through the mud?
In one of your old videos about the craftsman crawler you were talking about adding some rear suspension like “coil springs” using old seat springs. I really like this idea and I think im gonna give it a try, im thinking about getting a plate of steel to mount to the transaxle and weld the springs to that and the transmission mount brackets. With a self adjusting tensioner I think the belt will stay on and have enough stretch, also the springs are pretty stiff but im sure you will notice a difference between the stock solid mounted rear axle
hey fearless i just started having the same problem with my 820 transaxle it was the shift forks in the shaft they were snapped and try to select 2 gears at once plz check your shift forks make sure they slide back and fourth and are in tact when it trys to select 2 gears at once is when it locks up
What kind of oil do u run in that rearend I just got one just like it not to long ago
Worst transaxle storry for your request is when I was romping my one lt1000 in the mud 3 miles away from my house and it exploded without warning and then I had to get my big craftsman like Bruce’s castle, out to get it Home didn’t make it half way because I blew up the 820 that I put in 5 days ago when I had it. So I had to use my stock mst206.
Just wondering is there a way you could put a deck on the Murrey and use up for mowing?
I have to take my peerless apart because of my locker weld didn't hold! Do you think gears out of any peerless will work?
Hey fearless I have a 2003 john deere gt235 and I have 26 inch vampires on the back and I'm in the process of chain driving it
is it possible that the slack in the bearing and wear on the input shaft is causing it to bind up?
I really like your videos keep them going🚜
does the shift shaft out of one of those fit in a 820?
It looks fixable but it will take you a little bit of time to get it up and running right. Do you think you can get the mower deck working again? Sincerely Robert Gildea Elmira NY
I had the same issue with my transaxel. Everything was perfect inside but wouldn't engage gears an just grate badly. It ended up being the top gear going through the top of the casing. I added a thin washer to pull it down slightly an worked great. I'd say it was just worn cosidering its very old an well used. I think when you fix that slop in that worn shaft it will be fine. Good luck mate.
I had a mst-206 that I locked but my welds weren't deep enough, and I was doing some wheelies when the diff just exploded.
how bad or good of an idea would it be to make one out of a shaft driven lawnmower do you know what you would have to do to get more speed out of one
So I ended up with I believe a varry drive and wondering about the swapping to a mst 205 is it worth it and can I lock it and still mow grass with it if I wanted too
When his phone went off I thought it was mine 😂
I'm building a craftsman it has a 12hp Briggs on it what pulley ratio do u have on the Murray I like the speed it has
i had a trans the started wearing the left axel into the case a peerless 930
I have the same/similar grooves, "wear" patterns in my pulley swapped MST 206. Also, almost every time I have opened it up to repair/maintain, there are usually a good amount of aluminium metal shavings in the oil. I think it may be kind of par for the course on a pulley swapped transaxle with no real bearings.
Hey did ya check for a tiny piece of metal in the drained oil
Hey fearless what size pully is that I have an aluminum 4 inch I'm trying to put on and I got my front pully flipped I need tips
Bestline oil additive has so pretty crazy lubricity, maybe a good idea for your trans axle oil.
On my craftsman lt 1000 my rear pulley shaft that goes into the transaxle is very wobbly, I do not know a whole lot about this stuff so I would like some advice, is it shot or is it fixable?
Got a question how do i fill my trans with oil i dont see a oil plug
I was hoping to see an adapter vid on how to put the 820 in the Murray but at least the trans is useable I got a craftsman mower that I was going to use for a race mower found out that the fill plug was gone out of the transaxle so it shifts harder than it used to but I did get the plug
Hey man. I have a huge question. I know its not the right video for this. But im having issues getting my mower deep in water. It shuts off when it gets wet. I have a snorkel just like u have on the murray. Is my spark plug getting wet and thats it? Or are there other things i need to seal and modify to do be able to burry the motor and it still run? Its a briggs 502.
Are the cony roaders mud runs open to the public?
Not sure what transaxle but I tried to lock one once for a fast mower I was building and I didn't get it completely square and true when I welded it so after I got it all put together synthetic gear oil and everything all back in the mower took of through third gear that the boom case blew in half oil everywhere
i would love to see a new build like the murry but updated after you learned building the sears and the murry i think it would be spot on
What happened to the little utility trailer build for the sears
i had a similair problem with my 820 where i lost fith gear it was making horibal noises then the trans would barly shift and i had to kick it into gear after i got home i pulled the trans apart and found nothing wrong with it at all and it runs about 45km\h
Is chain stretch and hitting top of case input shaft ??
I had a Spicer 2000 on a older Murray, I was going 45 on it, and after time the casing started breaking it came to the point towhere I could my the whole transaxle up and down like 5 inches on the tractor
Stil have the original flathead 12hp?
Hi there, what gear oil weight is suppose to be used in these models?
I have a Toro with a mst 520-509 it was given to me by a neighbor who is elderly and park it in his garage 10 years ago. He said it was always garage kept and worked fine when he parked it. I put a good battery and fresh gas in it and it started right up but no reverse. I checked the linkage for something blocking it and tried an adjustment per the service manual. I even disconnected the linkage to make sure it clicked into reverse. So my 1st question is obviously do you have any clues or things I might try. 2nd are all 502's the same or do I need the 509 number as well when searching for a rebuild kit or a replacement transaxle? And do you know of where I might find a replacement or rebuild kit? Thank you
My worst transaxle fail was when I was tying to remove the large stock pulley when the hole top of the case broke
I had a spicer 6 speed transaxle i striped every single gear in it and snapped the reverse chain. It started skipping in gears 5 and 6 it keped working so i keped down shifting untill there was no more foward gears and then i sent it in reverse untill the chain broke. I geuss they dont like 22" mudlites and ungoverned opposed twins
Shotguns N mudmowers
I had a 12hp and a spicer I put in, so I could use my original 801 as a backup.
It was ok for a little while, but I swapped on a 20hp and it died on its maiden voyage.
I have the same problem with my tractor except my gears went out after a while so I have on 3 out of 5 gears now and can’t find one thing wrong
Can i put wheel hubs like your here onto my mtd transaxle? ? Sorry I'm new to mower buildz
my mst 206 sempt almost identical to my exploded mst 930. i thought thought my 206 had beefier gears in it. i have 930 parts all over my yard, i kinda gave up on finding them all.
When are you going to take the mini mower mudding
Happy new year put the other rear end together and use it you will love it....
The 205 is a good transaxle. Looking forward to the engine tear down!
the 206 is better one extra gear
I agree, got one of those too!
Can you do a video on how to put a tachometer on a mud mower. I have look all over RUclips and can not find any good video on how to do it . They either already have it hook up and the show it hook up. I want to know how I can hook one up. Can you please do a video on how to hook up a tachometer. I have a Murray wide body automatic(eventually going to be a manual) and that is what I want to put a tachometer on.
Logan Tinch green wire to thr coil....
What's up with almost no videos in forever
Like ur shop man.
NIce vid
I have a offroad mower and last winter I was playing around in the snow and the thing got really hot. So I cooled it off hot back on it drove it down the road and it just locked up on me.
Thank's man .Same thing here .Took it apart ,cleaned it ,could not find any problem but after putting it all back the gears slip sometime .WTF .
I've got a Spicer 5 speed (not sure what model) in my rear engine Opposed Twin Murray, and I give it hell but it refuses to quit. I've slammed in in reverse by accident a couple times, did donuts at full throttle and any other form of abuse you could imagine, but it just won't quit. Hell, it doesn't even whine at top speed. And yes, I've pulley swapped it. I recently took it apart because the left side axle fell out, so I'm working on repairing that so I'll stay in, but I'm still shocked at how good the internals are still. The bowl gear and race are in perfect shape, there's no metal flakes or broken gears in it either. People always hate on Spicer's for their poor quality, and maybe I've just gotten lucky, but mine just keeps on going without complaining about it.
I had a mower with an mtd Forward Neutral Reverse transaxle. I had it set up with a torque converter and a 12 horse briggs. Snapped the case completely in half on the first drive
What about higher compresion head? Of course missing compresion can appear 'coz of worn out rings or head gasket leak. First fix, then mod.
I was in a v notch / hill climb with a newer fiberglass hood cub cadet hydro. It was doing good till I had to back up because I dug myself a rut trying to get up. The rock I was on shifted and my tranny fell on it snapping the shifting linkage off. I had to get the truck in and pull it out. I ended up scraping the frame and tranny and kept the engine because rear ends on Cubs are not as interchangeable as you think.
Rebel Boys OUCH!
I have a 2004 murry water got in the transaxle and froze and I can't get it apart cause the bolts are seezed
I love your videos. Put insulation In your floor above your shop. Keep your baby's feet warm!
What size pulley u running
I am a teenager and i mess with lawn mowers and my carburetor is leaking on my 12.5 craftman 6 speed its a older one. What could i do to stop it from leaking
Cool video
those tires are mean looking , can u tell us what kind / size ? i’d be interested to outfit my snail 🐌 with them
I have a satoh beaver 373d and it's a beast
What happened to your mini off roading four wheeler build
Whenever u take the motor off could u do a vid on ur custom wiring and relays u did and I’d say try to get the snorkel working on it and it may help to have the pcv conected to the snorkel to get it to not run rich
i really want to build my own offroad mower but dont know what to start on(what mower like),love the vids tho keep them up!!!
what mower to start with is simple the extra one u have that dosent mow lawns any more start with simple things like tires that have grip maybe a gas pedal and pull start for when the starter takes a crap on u or battery dies after that look into locking the dif if u want and go from there
no need to buy a tractor to build into an offroad tractor i have plans of buiding and offroad machine with tractor parts and engine but thats it im saving money for the build and will put videos of it on a chan(not this1 its for gaming lol)
seras gaming you nailed it! Some things I will add though, avoid anything with the hydrostatic transmission, or the dreaded MTD vari-drive. That will somewhat limit you
jdcian got 2 racing mowers now, got them from my local junkyard
jdcian I got mine from a neighbor for free when he moved. If you don't have an extra one, check the free section of craigslist, they show up frequently!
Darin Frye you can definitely put mud tires on it, but nothing extreme. Those transaxles aren't built the strongest. And I don't have the MTD anymore, I got rid of a lot of stuff when we cleaned out the old garage
Is it hydrostatic or manual
Love the vids
When are we going to see the engine tear down video?
Good video
Hey man lover videos I just think you should post more often I know you're busy with the new shop but
What kind of oil fluid is for the peerless gear box please my is very noisy must be not much oil in there
just use some 75w90 gear oil or whatever is appropriate for your climate.
Can you do one on how to adjust the brakes because that is one of the biggest problems I am having on my Sears Craftsman offroad toy I built. Also does anyone have a good place to go to for finding out what axle each one is if you have no markings or tags on it?
And is it better to run grease or oil in those axles?
Blazer Project What Craftsman and is it a vertical or horizontal Peerless transmission.
I looked at one of your videos and I'm assuming that black mower is what you're talking about. It's been a while since I played with vertical transaxles because I have two GT6000s and a Sears Suburban gt18 so to the best of my knowledge your tranny has a little disc brake that slides in and out when you hit the brake. If I'm not mistaken that disc sits on a splined shaft and the two bolts on the break assembly holds it together along with the little square pad. So when you go about adjusting the brake you want to have clutch out and try to turn the nut in on the piece of metal that's bent at an angle not the rod itself that goes to the clutch. Now if the pads needed replaced you would have good stopping power and then it would suck again.
Thanks for the info, that will be taken care of next chance I get.
Can you put your fuel tank under the seats instead of in front of the steering wheel without having to install an electric gas pump
I think it's time for a 2 cylinder in the murray. I'm glad to see the trans is salvageable. Maybe run synthetic gear oil in it. That might help prevent wear. Idk awesome video.
he needs to put a Briggs 31 cubic inch engine in it
Maybe you should make a bracket thing with a bearing that goes above the input pulley on the transmission to counteract the side load on the input shaft bearing in the transaxle. it would make it harder to get the belt on and off though. (I hope that made sense)
I had a weed eater rider with a 13.5 hp briggs, same exact trans axle, i was on the lake in the winter with a bud of mine, i decided to drop the clutch in 6th gear and then my trand axle held but then blew and i heard this aweful shred noise and it was movin anywhere, so took it apart, the gear was shredded to hell, legit bald. Good times
I have a 1969 Sears custom 8e and while I was mowing the lawn I had the hub break on me.
look for weld slag in it mine had one small part of it and it destroyed the whole thing
Some dude something geek had a video of ranting about mostly you I like your videos seem to just have fun I thought it was odd be careful think he stalking you keep up the good videos thanks for info 👍
my worst trans axle fail was on Halloween this year i was riding my off road lawnmower with my friend his is stock but anyway got back to the house and was coming in my driveway at almost top speed then my brakes for some reason did not work so i did the next best thing i downshifted whitch somehow cracked one of my spider gears in half and blew a hole straight through the case i was running a peerless 801 that day i did get a new transaxel to fix it
I have a mst206 and I down shift all the time cause my brakes don’t work
i have peerless mt-205 with tecumseh on it ,and then i have a peerless mt-206 that doesn't have tecumseh on it.Is there any difference?
jeff mcpeak the 206 is a 6-speed, basically identical to the 205 with one extra gear added. You could even make a 205 a 206 if you just swap the gear
alright thank you,the 206 is under my race mower project, its a poulan,no veri drive system.it has 16.5hp on it but that engine is shot,so im replacing it with my 18.5hp opposed twin, and 3 1/2"' pulley on rear.trying to get 20-25mph.
I was towing my 14ft box trailer pulling it up front from the back yard and as I got up near the house I started to hear clicking and it got worse and then my 5 speed went out of my 14hp opposed twin
honestly im goning to stick with the 205 in my personal tractor, the really like the geared reverse, other than a chain flopping around. i do see the advantages for more high speed applications. but for my application i dont see it totally worth the swap. just my opinion. P.S. the MST's do have pry points to stick a screw driver in on the back where there is the most silicone.
restore56 I don't blame you, they are great transaxles! If I do end up going with an 820, it shouldn't be too bad as this isn't a really high speed machine. I'm plenty happy with it doing 25 miles an hour
I’ve got all the mst mods I did in a 4 or 5 part series on my channel.
Grease fitting on the input , bearings at the axle ends , good stuff.
Are the cony roaders mud runs open to the public?
