i was running a solid axle .mst 206 it twisted all the way around.. before it snapped , so i built a swing arm off the back. 1 1/4 axle ran with a chain from the one sided 206. then that broke. so i put new axle in the 206 . i run 2 chains from the 206 to the 1 1/4 axle. it is strong now . making double chain tighteners to have no chain slip in reverse was important .

I’ve been in 3 of these 801s and i knew about the spider gear pin but i was certain it was just a roll pin you could drive out with a punch.
I went digging in my folder of transaxle build pictures and sure enough theres a picture of a disassembled 801 differential that’s had the pin driven out with a punch.
No clue if I’ve just gotten lucky or what.

What do you suggest putting inside these transmissions? Do you use grease or some kind of gear lube?

    • @Robbie..Ha-Navi

Personally I use 80w90 with red n' tacky grease and make a thicker mixture. Works amazing

Where do you check oil level and fill it up ????

I have a peerless 840A on my jd180. One of the bushings (for one of the gear shafts) blew out the left side of the housing, then the gear on that shaft dug through the bottom of the case too. Having trouble finding a reasonable priced housing (other than the $800 one from jd)…. And what grease to use (with the smaller 5in input shaft pulley like this one)?

What do you prefer, the Peerless 801s or the Peerless MST-206??

801's with 8 inch rims are amazing. If you use 12" rims and big tires you'll blow any LT transaxle, but I've blown 5 206's so far and no 801's.

Have an lx172 with the peerless 801. Had a friend borrow it and the handle linkage snapped and broke. I recall before i had him borrow my mower the gearrs got hard to ahift all together. Whats exactly am i looking at? Would fixing the linkage solve anything or just better change the oil on it? Thanks for the help.

Toluene is pronounced "tall you een" and fun fact, TNT stands for Trinitrotoluene, "Tri - Nitro - Toluene".

what kind of MSTis that? it has a bullgear like a 639 or the 800s. the spiders off to the side. all my msts have a bullgear with spiders in the middle ,, i thought MSTs had 3/4 shaft and 800s 1 inch?

I just got a JD LX172 for free from my dad. He said previously it would only move in first and now it doesn't move at all. I pulled the top off and found that the belt was broken. However I noticed that when I turn the input shaft to the transmission with it in 1st that it doesn't seem to try and turn the wheels. Is it possible I might need to tear into the trans or is that normal?

    Greetings from Santa Clara, CA.
    Where can I find transmissions?

    • @C-M-E
      @C-M-E Год назад +2

Getting an old mower that the transmission still works is cheapest if you have a place to put it and a trailer to bring it home, otherwise ebay is rife with MSTs and the occasional 8xx series, though almost all of the 820s (the slightly tougher 800 series) that I've seen have been stripped down to sell individually as parts. For the good news, you can still get gears and/or parts either as NOS (new old stock) or even brand new from places like Oregon or a Peerless dealer. On that note, a brand new MST-206 goes for right around $200 +/- fifty bucks. I've seen them as low as $176 in the last few months. Small Engine Parts Warehouse usually has them, though they've gone up a lot more lately than is usual.

Ugh, my 801F project is on the back burner in favor of getting a JD 214 repowered before the end of the year, but not looking forward to scraping out the muck to replace the shift keys and the main pinion that I'm pretty sure is keeping it from functioning as the backup machine.
In the event you've seen an F model, this one has a very strange (rare?) friction disc clutch on top of the rear pulley that I re-engineering hoping it was the problem. Do you think the clutch is even necessary when I get back to the 801 rebuild?
