    The bentinite is what makes these trans stop working . I clean that crap out and replace it with 120 weight oil or lucas oil treatment or STP..Mix a little axle grease with it. I strongly advise people not to put that black tar crap back in it. Over time that stuff seperates and the solids stick to the bottom of the casing and seises up the gears. I have been working on lawn mowers for 60 years.

      I was going to just put marine grease in mine. The bentonite grease is harder to find than lumber nowadays.

    Zippo - Do you have instructions/video on how to take apart and put together the axle on this transmission? I have been unable to find any video that shows how to take one of these axles apart.

    I do Marine repair for a living and also restore muscle cars. You did a nice job but I do not understand not pre lubing all your components especially the support bushings you never assemble those dry. The rest of it is great but people if you do one of these you need to pre lube you components never assemble dry.

    Is there a master link that could be removed on the chain?

    Were can I find a Welsh plug? And my axle has no bearings why is that should I try to find some.. Thank you for your knowledge.

    • @ZippoVarga
      @ZippoVarga  5 лет назад

      Charles, depending on the axle your mower has, depends on the level of durability built in. If there are no bearings, it's not intended to have them. What Welsh plug are you missing? Zip~

    How often I actually need to service this gearbox?
    I have one that was standing for ten years and I know that the original grease from 1992 is in their...and i don’t know if I need to service it...

      The compound used is called Bentonite and it's a clay based product that separates from the oil used to thin it. They are considered "non-serviceable" units, but if you do nothing, they will fail due to the Bentonite hardening. This translates to you loosing the lubrication on all the internal components. You don't have to remove the Transaxle like I have here. Simply drill a small hole that you can use to add a couple ounces of gear oil into once a year. Mind you...this case is not SEALED, so expect the gear oil to weep from the seams through the season. Adding the gear oil will help keep everything lubricated where the Bentonite no longer does. Zip~

      Mine was hard shifting and I should have done it sooner.... Water got in and rusted a bit and the Grease that was in there become gummy. So I used Gasoline + Paint Brush and clean it all out. After that, I went to Walmart and bought Super Tech Marine Lithium Grease Walmart (14oz Tube) + Super Tech Multi-Duty Complex Hi-Temp Grease (14 oz Can) - Mix it all together and dump it in there. I also make sure put Extra at the Shifting location and now it seem great so far. NOTE: On my other Trans, I mixed 80W-90 and Marine Lithium Grease

    What grease is the best

    • @ZippoVarga
      @ZippoVarga  4 года назад +1

      A mixture of quality water resistant grease and thinner like diesel or Kerosene mixed to a smooth consistency will work best as a replacement to the Bentonite. Zip~

      There is no drain and there is no oil in them. There is a heavy grease. If you watch the whole series you'll see. Good luck! Zip~

      +Jonathan Barfield I did! I'll be installing the 4 new tires and transaxle tomorrow and between the rain drops, I hope to post a video of the old JD170 in action. A shim and removing the Bentonite/clay build up and all is well. The true test will be once the old JD is back on all fours. Zip~

    Hey Zip. I just picked up a big heavy duty Peerless hydro and cant find any info on what it was from. It is in pretty good shape. Its MOD1326B.
    Here a quick look. Any insight would be great! I wanna see it go to use and not sit around and rot.

    Update, I was told a Simplicity but don't know what model, perhaps a Simplicity like yours, such as a landlord. I think its dated 1980 but not positive, not good with dating Peerless transaxles. Maybe earlier. You'll probably know...
    Nevermind, I got it figured out.
    Its a 1300 series Peerless hydro from a Simplicity 4212 and 5212 as well as other machines, with a value of $250-$300. It weighs in at around 80 pounds.
