    Japanese people seem like the most curious people on Earth. They are into nearly everybody's culture. Just ask musicians from anywhere and they'll tell you they're big in Japan, for some reason.

    I really hope that B-culture fanatics don't have a one sided view of black culture. Black culture does not equate dark skin, jewelry, and rap music. It is so much more than materialism….our culture reflects our convoluted history and the diaspora in which we belong to. What you see here is merely a fraction of black culture.

    I live in Japan and occasionally run into/talk with Japanese people like the young lady in this video. And although I don't understand why someone be offended, I'm hesitant at considering their activity and interests as being things that are complementary to Black people. After all, unbeknownst to them the images of Black people that they eagerly consume and digest are toxic because it portrays Black people as monolithic and generic. What they're really enthralled with, isn't so much Black people or Black culture, but more so what Bell Hooks calls, "commodified/exotic Blackness". Thus, I would say that their interest in Black people/Black culture is primarily superficial. But in the end, having a superficial interest in something isn't necessarily an entirely bad thing. Because it can be the starting point from which some kind of genuine interest and in-depth understanding can grow.

    As a young Black American watching this, I couldn't help not to laugh. It's sad, amusing, weird, fascinating, shocking, and offensive all at once. Blacks are more than what you see on TV, music videos, and magazines. And we've contributed more than just music and fashion trends in America. It's sad because when they meet a professional Black American who was raise in the suburb, they are going to be extra culture shock and disappointed to discover that all Blacks aren't 'hip hoppers' lol. Oh what I'd pay to see their reactions!

    • @CrimsonEclipse

      At least they don't think black people are thuggish, ratchet, drug dealers and habitual baby maker. So far they see black people more positive than negative. They see black people in a more positive light than most American see black people.
      At least they admire instead of hate. Also what so special about them meeting a suburb born black person. They like the glamor of Hollywood not desperate housewives and average joe. Similar to any American who follow Hollywood trends. They like the popular glamorized trends not some regular everyday life style. What's so special about that? Would you expect a Japanese tourist to just visit the suburbs instead of all the famous American sights? It's almost as if you travel to Japan and not see any of Japanese popular sights and cultural sight just hang out with a guy at there desk job and stay in his apartment all day and eat fast noodle and watch tv and the Japanese guy tell you this is the typical life of a Japanese. What is the fun in that?

    • @shanec9840
      @shanec9840 10 лет назад +34

      CrimsonEclipse Oh, yah me! For Japanese people not thinking us Blacks are (and quote you) 'thuggish, ratchet, drug dealers and habitual baby maker.' And I'm suppose to be grateful for that? It shouldn't be that way to begin with. You don't get a pat on the back for having moral educated nonracist views. And there's a big different in seeing Black Americans in a positive light vs. seeing them in a light that's one dimensional.
      Grant it, I see your overall point and I'm NOT saying that what they are doing is wrong or intentionally done to be offensive to Blacks--I get that! However, my point remains, Blacks are more than 'hip hoppers' and we aren't monolithic. Until foreigners begin to picture Presidents, doctors, businessmen, moguls, and etc. when they think of Black Americans, then my issue will always remain. The problem I have with the Miley Cyrus's and Justin Biebers of the world is that they twerk and throw up gang signs and imitate our "culture" when their young and want to be cool, but as they get older and want to be taken seriously and assimilate into society, all of a sudden they move away from that image. It's called NOT being in love but being infatuated. And you suggest that I be grateful for their infatuation over their hate? We don't have to settle for anything. As for 'what's the fun in that?' That's my point! We are more than fun and games and for others amusement.

    • @CrimsonEclipse
      @CrimsonEclipse 10 лет назад +19

      Shane C I guess you are one of those people who makes everything about you or your people and have to be overly politically correct when it comes to you or your races.
      You do know political leaders, doctors, businessmen, moguls, come in all shapes, form and race. Not just black people. I don't see anyone labeling any other races being any of those things. It's just ignorant and stupid to assume they have to see political leaders, doctors, businessmen, moguls base on a race.
      Also why are you saying "foreigners"? Those Japanese are still in their own country and practice their version of hip hop style. They would only be consider foreigners if they leave their country. Have you seen a Japanese tourist with a overly dark tan and dress in over the top hip hop fashion? Those few people that follow this trend aren't the majority of Japan. I don't see the point being mad when they are not in your face.
      I don't see Japanese get angry over foreigners wants to copy Japanese trends and style. I never saw a Japanese complain about foreigners dressing in a Kimono, or Harajuku style. If you did your research Japanese comes in variety of trends, and fashion and lifestyle. Not all Japanese are Otakus or Harajuku fashion. Also not all Japanese are in the same ethnic backgrounds but most people don't know better and they are not complaining. I don't even see any Asians get mad that black women buy their real hair and wear it as weaves and call it their own.
      I even seen many black people dress up in traditional Chinese outfits in America and I don't see anyone complain about racism. Also Many people assume all Chinese are alike but Chinese culture comes in multiple languages and multiple ethnic backgrounds but who is counting. I'm sure not you.
      Same with white people of American. So far I had seen many black people assume white people are all the same but they comes in different backgrounds and accents, and cultural beliefs.
      America have develop multiple languages accents, diverse groups. Sure we can't name them all since we are only common with a few.
      Just like any culture most people won't automatically know everything about a culture. Just like how African American people don't know everything about Africa and all the languages, cultural diversity, and countries.
      I don't see Africans mad when American blacks people dress like them, and they aren't even regional or biologically from the same background.
      If you are just playing the races card that would be Ignorant. After all not all Africans countries are friends with each other. Same with not all Asian countries are friends with each other and not all European countries are friends with each others. Also America is divided by politics, religions, races, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, classes and other beliefs.
      Maybe you should do a little research and absorb all these information. Or maybe you just want it to make it about you and your pet peeves and stigma.

      You have to remember that on the island of Japan, black people aren't something they see very often. Their only exposure is what they see on t.v. or in magazines-- so of course that's all they know of black culture. Honestly, Japanese love to assimilate other cultures into their own. They embrace cultural differences and are generally very accepting of anything new.

    As the saying goes, "The grass looks greener on the other side of the fence." Many people in Asia are fascinated by different aspects of American culture, just as many Americans are fascinated by different aspects of various Asian cultures. This may seem odd, but it's probably a good thing. The more different people learn about each other, the greater humankind's chances of living together in peace and shared prosperity.

    As a black female I don't know whether to feel angry or sorry for her. Black culture goes SO far beyond hair, music and skin color. It seems as though the main young lady in the video appreciates some parts of black culture but what about us fighting slavery and racism, having the first black president, or amazing people like Nelson Mandela and Maya Angelou? I guess I mainly feel sorry for her that she's wasting her youth trying to be a part of another culture instead of appreciating her own. It's great to think other cultures are cool and want to learn more about them. I personally love kpop and I'm trying to become fluent in Spanish because I think the language is beautiful. But never would I try to literally be Korean or be Spanish. I'm also worried because as soon as she said tanning I was praying it would be a spray tan but no :( those tanning beds can't be good for you and that REALLY worries me for her.

      tb11212 in the first 30 seconds it states they are trying to look like American hip hoppers. The Japanese were never colonized nor enslaved. So they have no concept of slavery and I seriously doubt they wish to entertain that sad chapter of our black ancestors. No black American can say today he is a slave. And none of us alive experienced it. So it behooves me to know why they should look at that side.
      As for racism if you check some videos on youtube there are whites who live in Japan who complain about Japanese racism. Matter of fact the Japanese have always seen themselves superior to the Europeans.
      I saw a documentary yesterday that said after WWI the Japanese wanted to include a clause of equality for all races at the Treaty of Versailles. President Woodrow Wilson and the then Australian prime minister refused. The Japanese went away humiliated. They believe they were in charge of the Asian continent. But the whites in Australia did not want to see "yellow people" as superior over the white race. Basically because the whites refused to include a clause for racial equality the Japanese became more isolationist and eventually were out to teach white nations a lesson that we saw in WWII.

      Wayne Samuel What I meant was that I'm tired of black people and black culture only being depicted through hip hop, rappers and our hair texture. Not once did she mention a black person who she admires for their intelligence or contribution to society...just their skin color and hair. And I get that she was a minority in Japan with frizzier hair and I think it's great that she's been able to try different hair styles. And I know that other cultures have experienced and fought racism and I know that it was our black ancestors, not us, who were enslaved. I was just pointing out other parts of our culture that are important to know too, not just hair, music and skin color. I guess I mainly feel sorry for her because she feels the need to change so much about herself to "live" another culture when the skin color and hair isn't even half of it. Not trying to start a war, I was just stating my opinion.

    I believe that style is a personal choice. However, their labeling of this as 'black' is inappropriate and inaccurate. Their interpretation of 'black' focuses on the stereotypes often seen in media instead of black people as individuals. Given the history of slavery, the Harlem Renaissance, and the fact that there are different African countries made up of various ethnic groups with distinct cultural practices, I believe it is better that they label themselves 'hip-hop lifestyle' since they will probably never go into anthropology.

    Excuse me for thinking this video would be about Black people living in Japan. lol The only thing about people "pretending" is when they get tired of the hardships that come with being of a different culture. They can wash it off, stop tanning, and change their style to "fit" in again and pretend that this phase never happen.
    People of the Black cultures can't do that. So honestly it's not as complimentary as people like to tell themselves to immolate other cultures, instead of being who they are and being respectful of the culture they admire.. This is actually considered a fashion statement not a lifestyle. That's like me pretending to be Japanese and have my skin lightened...ect...They probably would think I was making fun of them. Playing at dress up has nothing to do with Black people. Being Black is a state of "being" it not a "state of mind" over reality.

    Eh...Tolerance, acceptance and respect for other cultures/etnicities is one thing. To modify yourself to look like another ethnicity all together is another. Seems like kind of an unhealthy mentality to me. That goes any which way mind you. Asians trying to be black, Americans trying to be Asian, etc. I just don't think it's a healthy mentality to go that far, but that's me. And also, they're not hurting anybody. I dont think it is that unhealthy when they got an ideal role model / fashion for them in their life , Since they did not turn into plastic surgery by doing so , i wouldnt consider that as "modify". since they just like the black people trait of fashion and experiment on it on them , surprisingly it looks good on them and they are happy .. so that what it is all matters :) Same as white people who like asian style cause they like asian fashion trait.

      Well first of all, I don't like when you say "subculture", english isn't my native langage, but I feel it in a negative way. Every culture has right to exist, there is no sub or over culture, there is always a history for ea culture. If you didn't mean it by a negative way, I take it back what I said. I didn't mean to offend you =).
      About this culture, I was in Japan 3 years ago, I'm not japanese at all. I found it when I was there, because I was looking for. So I'm pretty syre that it's still there ...
      I might understand you that you feel that foreigner will stigmatize every japaneses like those people in this video which is wrong because is not true. Japanese as other ethnicity is about diversity, is not because you didn't see it that it doesn't exist AND it is not because you see it through media that it is true for the whole country (idk if you guys get it lol). It must be the rarest culture in japan (might be 1% or 0.1% or lesser) but it still exist, between hardworker, eletronic and robot geek, ninja, traditional, lolita gothica, respectful, family, porn, nerds, ..., japanese culture.
      And if I talk more about the inner of this culture, you might be shocked.

So you have this paradox where the supposedly most individualistic society (America) is culturally the most "uniformly brainwashed", and the most conformist society (Japan) is more intricate than it appears.

      Popular representation of blacks overseas, who have very little idea of what actual black culture looks like, is quickly picked up based on cultural "expressions" such as clothing and music videos. It is a perversion in itself, but that's how it is. Popular media rarely represents highly educated blacks, and tries to substitute that for something more "showy." But isn't that true about most other things?

Even though she is looking at Rappers life style and thinking all black people are that way is kind of weird but how would she know she is not from here nor are we from there so I bet our perception on Japanese citizens are totally wrong. Stop turning this into a negative this is perfectly normal. Everyone haves a style they flaunt

    Wow its rare that you come cross cultural appropriation and it be a positive thing. Its not dismissive and insensitive over there the way it is here in America. They like to claim everyone's culture and re brand it so its still euro-aesthetics. Everything from native american head dresses, to chola fashion and its disgusting. But yall are doing it right. Shout out to you guys.. for real.

    This is obviously an old video, but looking at it honestly I don't have a problem with it because not only are they kinda adorable, but they acknowledge where their inspiration came from, acknowledges it is in fact black culture and they clearly have respect for the culture and black people. Unlike the people in america that do it and don't like to admit where they got the inspiration, disrespect us, or try to pass it off as their ideas. This legitimately feels more like appreciation then appropriation.

      Kurohisaki Okay I'll rephrase it, A new anime series(this year) with black people in it. At least, one of the main characters, not some one liner. Then I'll stop this nonsense of looking for blackness in anime'. 1. already watched those anime's except for Berserk; finding time for it. 2. Watched, Pokémon, Bleach, Naruto Shippuden, HunterxHunter, Cyborg 009, Aquarion, Aquarion Evolution, One Piece, Fairy Tail, Full Metal Alchemist, Eureka 7, Machiko Hatchin, Steins;Gate, Deadman Wonderland, Soul Eater and much more. There are some people who won't call the Boondocks an anime'. That would have been in my over 100 anime' watched list too. The problem I have is black lifestyle and maybe culture being adored in Japan, and yet, no series will acknowledge the melanin-type characters, or that other people exist besides the default.

    • @fatima6574
      @fatima6574 9 лет назад +1

      It sucks, but you'll be hard pressed looking for an anime from this year, or any year, with a black character who's the main character. I dont count michiko cuz she's brazillian, and aside from afro samurai, bleach with tousen who was one hundred percent rocking his braids and was an important character and yoruichi, i haven't seen any others. I want to count naruto, but aside from hidden cloud, which to be honest aren't really important characters, i won't. I say you'll be hard pressed because aside from adding a unique spin to that anime, you know, even tousen was 'unique' (i bet tite kubo thought he was genius thinking to add tousen the justice-bent rogue gotei captain) and honestly, i don't consider tousen unique, just different. What i'm trying to say is, black people in japan are almost looked upon as a fantasy, out of the ordinary, special and unique, mystical. Almost the way certain races in america are looked on in wonder an curiousity. That's why, i don't know if there will be an anime starring a black charater (who remembers peach girl? Momo was discriminated against a lot because people assumed she was a party bunny). Even if there is, or will be, gotta remember that japan is monocentric. Barely any other cultures mix in, and by making an anime starring a black character, a serious anime, they're going to have to be authentic. And the closest they got, well to my knowledge was afro samurai, and also some yaoi i read ages ago called undergrand hotel but the setting was america anyway even if it was a manga. I'm basing all this on observation. Lol with that said, i'll still wait too. I can still remember how happy i was with yoruichi. And with so many animes and mangas in existance there have to be some out there, gotta dig deeper i guess

    When I was a young boy the nanny that took care of me was a Japanese immigrant, and naturally I spent a lot of time with her daughter. Her father was a Canadian and black, so she was half Japanese half black. She moved back to japan as a preteen, and we exchange postcards. She is very uniquely beautiful. She actually looks darker than the girls in this video, but seems to dress more like a typical japanese woman (we're 22).

    I honestly take no offense to this. As long as they don’t take our culture and call it their own why does it matter? I think a lot of us are ignorant to the difference between cultural appreciation and cultural appropriation. Though it’s flattering that they admire us, it’s concerning that they tan so much and that they only mimic the stereotypes. However, that’s most likely due to the media so I don’t blame them.

    having studied in Japan, I can agree that the 'black lifestyle' is on full display. which is so sad cause I love all things Japanese! why would they destroy their skin tanning?? ugh. I'm not sure what I should be feeling after watching this. I think they should just embrace who they are and their culture and skin tones. it's true that there, you pretty much have it easy if you're black, at least my experience was. I was a 'celebrity' and it was nice being treated as if I were a big deal and not a parasite. admittedly, it's all based on stereotypes and their idea of what being black is so that western media thing...speak Japanese and you can make it there. oh, how I wish I could go back.

    It's slightly worrying when looking at the comments that countless 'faceless' individuals are always so quick to talk badly about black people whenever anything that seems to endorse us crops up (although I don't think Hip Hop is or should be the definition of black people). But is it that you 'racists' feel so insecure about yourselves that you have to troll videos to spew your nonsense? Because you say we're 'horrible' etc. yet are so fixated on us that you can't leave us alone. Seems a bit obsessive don't you think?

    Something I have come to notice about the Japanese are their views on race,such as a person who is not Asian but born in japan is not considered Japanese because they are not Asian. Japan is all about fashion and trending,some people like "black" American culture,even though its a music culture (hiphop,rap,r&b,etc) they just want something to emulate.

      It's not an inherently malicious or purposely offensive thing but it is a homogenous society, and furthermore an island nation, with a culture that is fairly exclusive, so these things can't be helped. As a British person growing up in the 2000s I was exposed to different cultures, races etcetera and was taught by the government, the school, and the media that racism, and community cohesion were things that I should pay attention to. But Japan is not like that.

    When I went to Japan, I got lots of compliments. No matter where I went people would call me out saying I looked beautiful and cute. Tons of families came to me to take pictures with me when I wore a yukata during Sanja Matsuri. People said I was very special just because of my skin color. I had never been so happy and proud to be black until I went to Japan. If you are black, go to Japan at least once in your life. It will change how you think of yourself, and for the better.
