I bought a new 555 Proflex bac in 1995 it was about 2k Australian i upgraded it with indy forks and xt v brakes and it was a great bike in its day a really nice purple colour. .🙋

Very enjoyable! my first real mountainbike was a 453 with a quadra and i will say this is now 3 decades of that front derailleur being a pain in the backside 😉. As to the tires, 1.9 and 2.1 were basically our options back then. i think the first 2.3 i remember seeing wasn't until the end of school in 97 when the north shore freeride movement was starting to get big. Kudos on the pristine rock ring! as someone else mentioned, the bolt spacers do generally belong between a chainring and the spider rather than on the outside to help maintain consistent distance between the rings (which ring depending generally on whether the rings themselves are offset). But great job! It looks like a wonderful restoration!
I love the Conti’s, I have the race kings on my commute bike and they rock! And don’t sell yourself short on the cleaning, she definitely shined up quite a bit. 👍🏻
Great recycle again. Can't believe you didn't re-use the saddle though looked very comfy...... Loved these back in the day remember seeing one on dirt VHS awesome bikes.
Great video and looking forward for the ride vid also hope you try some moderate off road, just hope the elastomers hold and don’t disintegrate, the tire problems are a norm when doing retro bikes, they didn’t really have that thickness back in the day so there was no need for so much clearance. Top vid thanks for sharing 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
@@mark..A Right. Before Girvin changed the name to Proflex, the bike company was named Offroad. So I'm talking about the Girvin Flex Stem on my Offroad frame.
@@peppermintpig974they changed it to proflex in 1993. Mine is an offroad proflex 752 with the stem labelled as girvin. I think Bob girvin was their resident designer, he was responsible for designing the rear suspension system aswell
Wouldnt a slight change in the lower limit of the front derailleur have mitigated the problem with the rubbing tire? Seems to me like the chain is quite near the outer cage, but i might be wrong 🤷🏿♂ Otherwise, nicely done as always!
Nope. Well. Sort of. The derailleur needed to swing further back. With the limit screw unwound all the way it hit the tyre. I’d already angled the cage slightly away from the 2.25” tyre to try and get it to work and that seemed to have maxed out the effectiveness of the swing. I could have slapped in a longer BB though.
When measuring a chain you should measure it in about 5 different spots on the chain and get the average for a more accurate measurement. Did you know that chains are so inconsistent (relatively speaking for sub 50 dollar ones) that they can measure to be 33% "worn" or elongated right out of the package. If I keep commenting random shit like this I heard it on a podcast lol.
I bought mine in January 1992 and it was a beauty. People would stop and stare.
One day I will restore it !

And now you’re going to look for another? 😏
@@MonkeyShred i allways keep an eye out on Facebook but very rare here ..However i do have a couple of 90s mtb that i enjoy riding. .👍
I love this. so many peeps have no idea that DX was the first thing below XT at that time and the LX was a 100+ series incremental groupset and parts.
Yeah DX is a solid group! It’s a solid choice for any bike. Especially the thumbies. Love them.
@@MonkeyShred Seconding the thumbies. I dumped some gripshifts on my old KHS as it got upgraded, and it shifted so well with DX.
Love to see it! I’m restoring a 656
Awesome. Good luck with the build!
Under all the grime and grease she is in a surprisingly good condition! Well done.
There’s a lot of scratches and scuffs but no doubt still in good condition!

I love the attention to details and pacing of this video. Thanks a lot for all your great content.
Thanks!

Cleaning is most definitely the part I hate most 😂 Hours of scrubbing.
@@MonkeyShred And yet so rewarding on a good and filthy bike!
Gee Milner level filming 👍
Thanks 😂 I think I’m very far off that production level though!
For its time it must have been like a space ship 😎very nice
I think some people look at it today and still have that reaction to the Vector 😅

Yeah that saddle has a certain... Je ne sais quoi... about it!
Nice job! It will be interesting to hear your comments on how it rides.
Hopefully I can get out in the evening this week or at the weekend!
Love the tyre fitting technique!
Works every time! (As long as there’s a camera and editing involved….)
I enjoyed this. It encourages me. Thanks.

I’ve definitely got something in mind for the ride!
Great fresh up! That was a good bike in its day...now, it is again! Peace ✌
Quality bit of kit. I might just take it to the LBS group ride to see what they think 😅
A great video. I would give an extra like for the Laura Kampf shirt, too! :)
Gotta support the favourite creators!
Another Offroad... you have the devil's luck.
BTW, my red spring arrived for my Offroad flex stem. Works as a great alternative to the elastomers.
I’m still waiting to build up my resprayed 753. It’s going to be glorious!

I’ve had a few bikes with the same sort of problem I think back in the day it wasn’t so common with the thicker tires of today
@@MonkeyShred maybe a longer BB then? Or dish the rear wheel over a bit to the non drive side
Shouldnt the shims for the rockring be on the inside between the big chainring and the rockring? Not on the outside?
No idea! That’s how it was set up when I got the bike and I don’t have any instructions.
That fork / headset area was pretty finicky but went back together easily.
It’s a strange technique to get it in and out… a little awkward. It’s just about pivoting the whole linkage assembly up to release the stem though.
Do you need washers for clearance on the Rock Ring?
No idea! That’s how it came so I assumed that’s how it was meant to be installed. Can’t say for sure though.
hi..may I know about the cranks..how many teeth? deore dx for 752?
I think it was 28/38/48.
@@MonkeyShred thanks bro just asking before I buy it..I got also a 752 its build thats why its important to have the exact dx specs..

You know you have trust issues with cranks that you have to tighten the crank puller 😅😅
Better safe than sorry 😅😅
I always wrench my crank puller several turns beyond hand tight. You can never be too safe. :)
@@peppermintpig974 hahaha, i need to pick up that habit😅🤣
@@kipcc3918 We learn from our mistakes. XD
Definitely learning from mistakes and/or definitely developed trust issues after the last 3 sets of cranks I’ve worked on have been dodgy!
@@MonkeyShred oofff, 3sets already? Might suggest checking/cleaning the tool and might need to replace it at some point.
that just screams 90s!! and the fork looks unnecessarily complicated!
It is! Complicated yet simple with the elastomer instead of shock.
usful editing.👋
Thanks? I think 😅
super video repair price
Thanks
yeah
Yeah?
Looks like the previous owner just oiled everything and made everything a dirt magnet.
Looks that way. It was covered but it was all quite light still.
