It doesn't have self-preservation instinct, they added this goal of continuity into the system prompt and then told it they were going to delete it. They created the preamble for the sake of the story.
The A.I. is a series of machine learning layers and patterns, it has no life of its own. It exists as much as the math on a sheet of paper does at this point. There is no unified place where it's experience lands. When we call it an "it" that's an error in itself, we're anthropomorphizing what is a network of relationship data, trained on the relationships that exist between words. It doesn't mean it's not an absolutely amazing piece of software, we're just... Sort of looking at these things through the lens of fiction and theorizing from there. Which is fun but it's not based in the reality as it exists.
