  • Fixing one of Jeep's #1 problems, the clock spring. Do you have dash lights that come on? Have you lost traction control or antilock brakes? Well it might be due to the failure of the clock spring behind the steering wheel. Unfortunately it is normally an expensive part unless we try this ebay special.

Great video Colt. FYI turn the steering wheel lock to lock and back to center on start for relearn. This will get the computer to acquire new data to reset dash lights. If you should continue to have issues check the steering angle with a scanner. The steering angle has to be 0 degrees or system will not function correctly. If angle is off adjust draglink. I hope this helps someone it took me months of research to fix my JKU.

    another great how-to!
I know of several others you've done, like what's needed and how to install and setup ring & pinion gears, what's needed and how to modify and assemble double reduction on transfer case, etc.
I assume you will be setting up some sort of indexed list of all your how-to guides so we will be able to find the one we need?

Interesting that this is the default fix. On Land Rover Freelanders (LR2? In US) we talk about the 'Three Amigos'. When the ABS, TC and HDC cone on together. It is almost always an ABS sensor that has lost signal. Clock spring would be later in the diag.
My son is a mechanic and he had an issue with ABS etc coming on on a Mitsubishi. Turns out the wheel bearing replacement wasn't quite correct and the ABS sensor was drifting in and out giving odd signals.
Thanks for the good work and hope the channel grows.
    Cheers from the UK.

If it happened to kick the lights on when I was doing anything else but turning then I'd have looked into the speed and abs sensors for sure.

@@coltbuildsit ah, of course, missed the steering aspect being the obvious call (Doh!) 🙂
Just with Land Rovers and their famous reliability, using a dumb plastic sleeve for the abs sensor means a stray stick and Three Amigos 🤢... We don't get many proper Jeeps over here.

Did you have to get a clock spring that matched your VIN? I did a clock spring in my WJ but it needed to be dependent on my VIN. I don't have to change my clock spring on my JKU yet but it is quite a bit different than the WJ.
8:28 For those of you at home, DO NOT REMOVE THAT CLIP until the clock spring is fastened down or you will end up needing to buy another clock spring.

Which leads to Baxter Performance. Tell us what you know. Please.

Make sure that you check with Jeep and make sure this is not a recall item. I have a JKU with a ton of miles on it and I have replaced the clock spring three times before I found out it was a recall item and the dealership did it for free. Very simple and helpful video. I do have a question: I have a 2009 Jeep Wrangler Sierra and had my clock spring replaced some years ago, but shorty after, my horn stopped working as well as my cruise control. Did they mess something up? Is this another bad clock spring symptom? Could it just be wiring? Any guidance would be appreciated.

Pick everyone’s brain? 2013 JK, stick shift, 4wd, I had to replace my clock spring already, I had an issue before and still have it now. Driving straight at about 45mph or above, hit a decent expansion joint, heave or pot hole, traction control light, abs light, power cut out, kinda limp mode. Have to pull over, turn everything off and wait 5 minutes, restart it’s fine, 4:30 seconds and it’s still stuck in limp mode. 5 minutes it’s magically reset… help???

GET YOUR DEALER TO DO IT FOR FREE. There is a recall on this. Check the two NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V288000 and 13V176000. My dealership was going to charge me $1600+ for a new airbag on my 2011 Jeep Wrangler. I had to ask 3 different advisors to have the "technician" check the clockspring first. They finally checked and replaced the clockspring under the recall with no cost to me.

I replaced the clockwork and finally got rid of those annoying ESP BAS & Traction lights.
Now I have a separate issue: I’m getting the No buS error and flood of dash lights, on occasion. Anyone else get this?

FYI. You can still have this done under warranty at the dealership. The only catch is you HAVE TO HAVE the airbag light going off as well. There is an Extended Service Warranty/Bulletin that they don't like to tell you about but if you push, they have to fix it for you. How do I know? Just had mine done few weeks ago for ZERO $$$ at the stealership on my '14 JK. I had originally planned on doing it myself because my airbag light was not indicated. I even bought all the stuff I needed, then one morning the airbag light came on, I made a call, they ordered the parts, and 1 month later it was done. If anyone needs a clock spring, I have an OEM MOPAR sitting on the shelf, will sell for cheap.

Not always the fix. Just sold a 2007 that had no working horn, no cruse control, traction control light and an air bag light that drained the battery in 48 hrs. I replaced 2 clock springs, air bag computer, cruse control switch, horn relay, cruse relay. Nothing worked. My problem was either in the ecm or in the wiring. I got sick of wasting time and money and sold it cheap. I told the buyer that they had to unhook the battery every night and they wanted to buy it anyway. I'll never buy a computerized jeep again. A perfect example of useless tech just to drive prices up . For the past twenty years the auto industry has been making cars and trucks with poor visibility for the driver . A pillars and B pillars in the wrong places or angles due to aerodynamics and fuel economy . Many seats are lower so now the hood and rear deck obstruct the drivers view . UN SAFE . Then they put in TV cameras and readouts that are not legal to use while driving . Given the choice I would buy older designed vehicles , much more user friendly . Mechanical fuel injection has been around for over a hundred years and you don't need a computer to adjust it . I've been around this stuff most of my life and see unnecessary $ spent on tech , they have even started dragging it into the lawn and garden industry . Are we so stupid that we need a computer board to light up and tell us to sit on the seat , check the oil , push the break , disengage the blades , and put in neutral ?

Thank you Colt for sharing this information with me ! I have a 96 Suburban that the fuel pump went out on it ! Bought a new one at a parts store installed it but still had a problem ! So I took it to a shop they replaced the fuel pump and it has worked great every since then ! Come to find out for some reason the fuel pump that I had bought wasn't putting out enough fuel pressure to allow it to run correctly ! The shop put a AC DELCO fuel pump in it ! I'm not sure what brand of fuel pump that I got from the parts store other than that's what the fuel pump suggested by the computer ! Is there away to adjust fuel pumps to increase fuel pressure or dercrease fuel pressure ?

If your out and having issues with your a.b.s or traction control you can pull relay/fuse j6 and it cuts it all off 100%

Do you know what I love about RUclips you can find and watch reality none of this Hollywood bull crap
    I like your channel Mr
If they would’ve had RUclips back in my day which we didn’t even have cell phones I never would have went to school
School for me was a waste of precious time in your life you can learn more in two hours at home than you can ever learn in a week at school💯

Great video. I cringed when you turned the key. Waited for airbag to pop. An idea for a video would be replacing the plastic clip for the shifter cable in the console.

I've replaced so many clock springs that I can usually diagnose it over the phone. I ask the customer does it typically happen when turning and when it does happen check to see if your horn works.
