Are you sure. 255 80 17 would not need any offset from the stock 17inch Toyota Rims? It looks like the UCA would be tight if not touching. The wheels you used already had a lower offset right?
Really helpful video! Deciding on my build now. Do the 255/80/17s fit in the spare tire slot?
@@brentsanada6589 sadly no
This is without a doubt the best selection of wheels and tires I've seen on a 1st gen Sequoia. The temptation to copy that on mine is crazy. Great set up!
Thanks! We spent seemingly ages looking at options and picking this out. Glad to know others appreciate it too.
I’m looking to do 33’s on the 4Runner as well. I hear there’s a bit of rubbing in reverse, but a 2inch lift helps a bit. Good video guys!
35s are definitely worth it i had 33s but 35s are a good option too BTW yes 😆 rubbing happened for sure i math'd my lift wrong too. Taller stance with 2" fronts so I had to get rear spacers til I invest in more rugged suspension
I'd love to step up to 35s for the next set on our Sequoia, but I think a re-gearing is in order fist.
Excellent. Thank you for the information. Correct, brief and efficient. The use of charts to help me understand was monumental.
Happy to help!
Good reference to guru Andrew SP White regarding narrow tires. That man knows more about off-roading then we ever will.
To this day I see that question in the groups all the time even 3 years later haha, good try tho man great video! . I will share this every time I see the question
Great Video! I think you have me convinced to do 55s on our Sequoia. I'm predicting skinny tires are going to become a fad over the next few years.
I have noticed gaining popularity for them recently (especially amongst GX 470 owners). I'm hoping an increase in popularity will result in more manufacturers producing them. Maybe when its time to buy the next set, we'll have more than 6 options 😂
In the video, you mentioned the option of mounting 255/80/17 tries to stock rims. As much as I would like to add custom rims to my 2007 Sequoia, the money just isn't there right now. But if I could add 33's to my existing rims, then that would be an acceptable compromise. BTW, I enjoy watching your videos.
My Fav size for these is actually 275/70/18. Not as wide as the 285's and actually helps quite a bit in the handling department, far more stable in cornering at speed. Still enough sidewall for airing down too, even down to 15lbs offroad. Had them on my Sequoia as well as my lx470. 33.2" size as well. Going D or E rated gives you a stronger sidewall, and handle far better for towing as well than a 255 series would. Best of both worlds, at least for most of the onroad/offroad driving we usually did, for the trails in British Columbia :)
275s are definitely a good option for those with 18inch wheels. I believe fitting them would be similar to 285s.
@@TheFraziers Yeah they're about 1cm (10mm) narrower, so it helps a little bit on fitment for sure.... I think 255's would rock offroad though :)
Great video!!! I’ve got 285 (Americus) on Method zero offsets. Slight frame rub at stops and fender rub when charging up grade on turns. I’m looking at the Dobinsons 2.25” kit (yellows) on 1st Gen.
Thanks for all the info, and the expert Aussie reference. Helped me make up my mind on getting 255/85s for my stock 16" rims. BUT can't fit that size in the spare well! What do you recommend? 1) 255/80 as a spare - smaller like you did. Or 2) an aired-down 255/85 since I'll always have the air compressor with me. Thanks!
I'm doing a 255/75R17 Nitto Trail Graper in a C load perfect ride and amazing offroad and clears everything
I have a TS 2005 with Bilsteins on the 3rd mark, 285-70R17's and Spidertrax spacers and it looks awesome and handles really well, you have confirmed my setup is right, thanks!
what about the rear? did you lift rear?

Great job and very informative
Thanks for the input... cheers!
Great informative video. Thanks.
Great video. Super informative 👌
Excellent video bro 👌🏼
Very helpful sir! Thanks
I will be buying the exact same tires for my 2006 Sequoia. I have two questions; can you mount the 255’s on the stock spare tire rim? Will the 255 (33”) fit under the Sequoia in the stock configuration? Thanks !
I'm curious as to what your overall height gain was with the tires and lift? Also What modifications if any did you have to do to the rear? With the bilstein on the third setting, did you have to add a dif drop kit? I'm curious what the angeles were on the front axles?
Can’t say I know what the height gain was. I never measured before we did all of it. It made a huge difference though. The rear got new OME 2862 springs and summit long shocks. We have a video on the channel dedicated to that. We have a diff drop. We haven’t seen any wear on our cv boots yet but I’m sure it’ll happen eventually like with any lifted IFS vehicle.
Hi there, I got a set of 245/75/17 do you think it will fit my sequoia without any modifications ?
I'm running 285/75 R17 with a old man Emu lift on a 2003 Sequoia..
Great vid! I subscribed, your channel is cool and I like your production quality. Have a question tho- how'd you lift the rear?
On my gen 1 sequoia, I'm trying to fit in 255/85/16's;
-going to lift the front with 6112's up 2 inches
-probably get a dif drop,
-maybe new upper control arms? Did you stick with stock and did it align well enough?
-Not opposed to getting new rims either. Stockers on now.
* However- I'm pretty lost on how to lift the rear. Did you add spacers? New springs? I hear some landcruiser springs will get you the right height for 33's.
Thanks in advance for any advice!
We went with the OME 2862 springs. They are for a 100 series cruiser but give you about 2-2.5 inches on the Sequoia. We have a few suspension related videos on the channel, this being our most recent: ruclips.net/video/AUPT1K4bq0c/видео.html
@@TheFraziers thanks! I saw you comment on another reply that you had a suspension video but had trouble finding it. Cool to see people sharing knowledge on the gen1 sequoia!
thank you 🙌🏽
Does this model sequoia come with the torsen differential?
05-07 models have the Torsen center diff which can distribute power as needed between both axles or it can be locked splitting power 50/50
Great videos man, I have a 305/70 R16 ready waiting for install. Can you help me to know the better cheaper way to lift. I want keep my stock wheels.
2002 sequoia sr5 4wd.
Thanks in advance
I scooped 285’s today. Wanted 255’s but they weren’t in the budget this time around. Next go around when I’m not also installing an expensive lift, I’d grab the 255’s. I’m running 2017 t4r 17”wheels on a 3” lift with 1.25” wheel spacers. My sequoia is 02’ 4x4. 255’s are way more expensive and have way less options than at 285.
The 255s are actually about the same price if you compare the same tire brand, model, and ply rating. The difference is that there aren’t any budget brands making them. Our Toyos were the cheapest 255 you can buy and they still aren’t cheap.
@@TheFraziers yeah exactly. Only 4-5 options in that size all premium tires at 225ish and up per tire. I got my 285 milestars for 150 each with 50k tread warranty. There’s at least 2 dozen tire options in at 285.
@@MotoDUDEabides Hoping that 255s will become more popular and more brands will start producing them.
Sounds like you’re on a budget. I bought Americus 285’s and saved $500 on the set. They are great tires. I don’t care if they ain’t cool. Made in Thailand not China.
@@TheFraziers I hope so, but I’m betting it’ll be some time before it’s reality.
Curious what you are doing for a spare since a 33 doesn't fit in the normal spot? Does it fit aired down?
I’m gonna slide in here 2 years late and ask what about 33x10.5 r17 would the clearances be similar to the 255 and would it clear with stock rims and lift? I know it’s a half inch wider I figure it’s was a good middle ground between 285s and 255s
Nice video and beautiful Sequoia . I have one 2002 limited. The problem with it is the brake light on ...the mechanic says it's the abs computer that needs to be replaced....is that true or what. Answer me when you have time thanks
Do you trust your mechanic? When we had the traction control light on I paid a Toyota dealer $70 to do a full vehicle diagnostic which included scanning all codes. They told me what was wrong (bad wheel speed sensor) and I replaced it myself with a $25 part. Might not hurt to do the same
Have you tried running tire chains on that setup? I just bought mine and just looking at the stock setup, I’m a little nervous at how close some of the suspension and steering components are to the tire.
I have run chains but only on the rear. I don’t think I would feel comfortable running them on the front unless I had maybe an extra inch of lift.
Hey can you fit a 32 with a -12mm offset on stock suspension without having to trim anything?
2001 Tundra - 2.5” front lift - I want to put 16x8 +1mm offset with 4.5” backspace on 285/75/16. What do you think?
Does anything need to be done to adjust the camber after the lift? Wouldn't you start to see it go positive with 2" of lift?
Do the Old man emu front shocks linked in the description provide a 2” lift on the front? I’ve got a 2001 Sequoia.
Great video I am wanting to install 20" wheels with a 0 offset what would be the best tire to fit that wheel without having issue? any help would be great
Probably 275/55/20. I’d imagine the process of getting them to fit would be similar to 285/70/17.
Did you lift the rear as well? What products did you use? Did you use diff drop kit?
We have a previous video on the rear suspension. We do have a diff drop but I’m not sure if I’d do it again
How about 34’s? (285/85/17) would they fit on 2.5” lift with 0-offset wheels and ko2’s?
Is the bilstein 5100’s the only lift you have up front
Did you do the diff drop with your lift? If not have you had and noise or issues with your front driveline?
We do have a diff drop kit. No noises when we had the lift for few weeks before the diff drop got put on.
Has anyone tried putting 275/70R16 on stock everything (no lift, 16" rim)? #WillItRub
Thanks for the help and love the color of your Sequoia. I have adjustable air suspension on mine. Can I still install the 5100s up front? What are the largest tires that I can fit on the stock suspension? If buying new wheels, are 16 inch wheels best for off road? Thanks in advance. :-)
16 inch is best for airing down but 17s are just about as good and have much more options both wheel and tire. I’d probably stick with 17s. Biggest tire on stock is like a 265/70/17 or equivalent with different wheel size. They still might rub a little bit. I don’t think I’d get bigger tires without a suspension lift.
Air suspension should pull right out and be easily replaced with traditional shocks and springs.
Thank you so much! Will the 265 70R17 look the same from the side as the 285 70R17?
How do you think 265 75R16 would work out? Would they perform better than 265 70R16?
@@beththegeologist7318 Yeah that would be good, but I just don’t see it being enough of an upgrade to merit the expense. My philosophy for tires and suspension is to leave a vehicle stock, or go up to 33s and a two inch lift. Anything in between isn’t really worth it in my opinion.
Hey - great video. I just wanted to confirm 100% with you. I have a 04 with no lift and want to put your exact same wheels on it with 285s. Will the offset and no lift be enough? Thanks! Id rather not use wheel spacers
They also sell those wheels in a -12 offset. Do you think that would be better?
The offset should be fine, but you’re going to definitely need some lift. The tire, regardless of offset, will smack the fender liner any time you go over a bump in the road. A lift is a requirement in my mind. And with a lift, you still may need to trim the edge of the fender well.
@@TheFraziers unless he uses a spacer
Is that sequoia green? Hard to tell
Hi there...enjoying your channel. You may have answered this already, will a 33" fit in the spare tire area?
No, our 255/75/17 is a true 32” and it just barely fits. I’m guessing that’s the largest diameter that will fit.
@@TheFraziers
Oh. I thought from your video you were running 255/80/17 which are 33” equivalent correct? Good to know 32” is the biggest spare that will fit, that might change things for me.
@@steveplagman4307 Our 4 main tires are 255/80/17. 255/80 is indeed a true 33. Our spare is a 255/75/17. It’s the closest tire we could find
@@TheFraziers
Ah. I see what you did. Thanks for clarifying. Keep up the good content. I’m considering a Dobinsons IMS 2” lift fwiw.
Hello, you mentioned lifting the front with the bilstein shocks, but do you not need to lift the rear? is your rear height stock in this video?
2 inch lift in the rear with ome 2862 springs but no lift in the rear is required for the 33s
@@TheFraziers I just realized, do you guys not carry a spare full size wheel?
@@PanditaP that’s correct. We have a 255/75/17 as a spare so just barely smaller than full size. Not ideal, but that’s the biggest that will fit under the vehicle and it’s better than no spare at all.
Which rims are those?
My local shop is wanting $3k for 3" lift + spacers + wheels & tires. Is that decent in 2024?
What type of lift?
@@TheFraziers I don't know honestly. They just said 3"
The lift with parts and labor was about $1,500 and the wheels and tires were about the same price
I’d say you probably need to do a deep dive of research before pulling the trigger on suspension before spending $3k on something. $3k for all of what they are including sounds a little too cheap to be good stuff.
I would never lift an IFS vehicle 3” by the way. Great way to ruin your ride. Stick with 2” or less.
@@TheFraziers awesome thank you for the info! I feel like it sits up a decent amount stuck. I was just wanting to put a little bit more aggressive tires and I know that if you Go wider. Sometimes they will rub
So just to clarify if I buy 285/70/17 with stock wheels will they fit? Even if they rub will they fit? I can always trim where the rubbing is. Or will I absolutely need spacers? Or spacers won’t even do it?. So confused sorry
285 in stock wheels will rub on the frame which is bad. I’d say spacers are a requirement
@@TheFraziers what size spacers do u think I should get
First!
Tremendous support right here^
How is the ride with the LT tires versus the normally stock P-metrics? I’m about ready to pull the trigger on the 255s, but I’m worried about a drastic difference and ride quality because of the heavier duty tire.
Definitely stiffer but not enough to make a huge difference in my opinion.

Are you planning on going off road? If so, a 20 inch wheel is not the best choice. If you just want something that looks good to you, a 275/55/20 is probably what you want.
no off-roading. Just my daily and snow. And no need for a spacer on that right?
@@ramonfacultad1717 I’m not actually sure. Spacers would be the safe bet, but you could likely get away without one. A good tire shop would probably be willing to do a test fit for you just to be sure.
