- CSS to VSS Wiring: Getting the signal your swap needs
By Brian Gillespie and Aaron Gaghagen
The transmission you choose to use for your K swap determines certain things for your installation. Things like shifter and shifter cables need to match the action of the gear selector on the transmission. Another thing that the transmission determines is how your car gets the speed signal. There are basically two ways that Honda K series transmissions relay the speed signal. The transmission will use either a countershaft speed sensor, a CSS for short, or a vehicle speed sensor, typically referred to as a VSS.
In this video Brian shows how to wire a K series engine harness that was previously used with a transmission using CSS to be used with a transmission using VSS. Using Brian's method of adding a VSS connector will allow you to keep the option of changing back to a transmission using a CSS in the future.

Thank you Vtec Academy for Schooling us!
You bet! Thanks for watching. Hopefully this helps people with their swaps.
These tutorials make life so.much easier
We try!
Wow this is a great video its gonna save me $200 for a dakota universe speed convertor which some videos said i should use. I put in a 04 transmission in my 06 rsx-s thanks! Cant praise you enough for doing vtec gods work. Thank you thank you thank you 🙏
did it work?
Awesome information sir !!!!! The Honda community is very proud of your channel 👏 👍 😀
Thank you!!

Ahahahha! We believe in you.
Another awesome 👌 vid thanks Brian
You bet. Thanks for watching!
Smooooth it on rather than stretch it on. Makes son much sense. Definitely been doing that wrong
Yeah, it's something that we all did at one point in time.
Good stuff man!
Appreciate it!
Awesome content helping alot
Now they need a video to go vss to css 😂 great content👌🏻😎
We explain that here: ruclips.net/video/4vu0gn0KchA/видео.html
@@VTECAcademy awesome thank you!
@@VTECAcademy that video explains the same thing, CSS to VSS. I also need a tutorial going from VSS to CSS.
@@401kid6 “why didn’t you ask us last year” -vtec academy
This was his response to someone else’s comment, I noticed you asked this question 6 months ago with no response.. I’d imagine that’s why…
@@401kid6 I too am here in need of the same vss to css information.. NOT CSS TO VSS!
Awesome 👍🏼💪🏼
Wish I saw this last year lol, I had to do this in reverse. I had to repin my type s harness and change connector to use css then change the setting in kpro. Using a cl7 euro r 6spd, 02-04 type s harness and kpro4.
Why didn't you ask us back then? LOL
@@VTECAcademy 😂
Can you do VSS to CSS without the speed healer converter?
Any reason u went for tape instead of heat shrink or tape and small pice if heat shrink over taped end sevtion
Good info yet again. Keep crankin em out.
Offtopic: If someone has a v6 6mt j-series layin around, what are the best double-wishbone chassis for a swap?
Definite best double wishbone chassis is the dc4/dc2/db7 integra by far, second best would be 2nd/3rd gen prelude, third best would be civic del sol, fourth best I'd say is eg/ek civic. 5th mazda 5/ford fusion,
For rwd: e90 bmw 3 series, infinti g35/g37, mazda rx-8,
@@youngb1ood I'm mainly worried about not reducing ground clearance without needing a 1980s redneck dragster-esque hood. Was thinkin DA/DC, CRV, or even an EF sedan if I could squeeze it.
@@nobodynoone2500 cl7/9? That would be my first choice for that engine, very close second rd1 crv.
Is this why Hondata can't read my speed? I have a 2006 Civic SI transmission and a 2004 ECM in my CRX K24. I installed a Rywire harness. At the sensor, I get 12v and a good ground. The signal wire is solid also.
I've fitted NSN4 6 Speed transmission for a 2005 rsx type s on my k20a2 swapped eg civic, was previously 5 speed transmission from a Ep3 civic. The speed sensor plug is different also Iam noticing it's crunching going into reverse. Iam running a Ktuned Shifter Assembly, should I try adjust the shifter to hopefully stop the reverse grind? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks
I'm New to K-Swapped information. What years and models use the counter shaft speed sensors and what years and models use VSS? Thanks
Hello I have to connect at the front. I’m not sure about the harness, but everything else seems to be out of an 2005 RSx I have black, black and yellow and white and green, gray conector i need blk conector believe it’s a D6 transmission. What do I need to do? Thank you very much.
The wire has to be black and yellow or yellow and black?? I only see one black yellow wire
Hi!!! What sensor do you use??? Magnetic??? Or anologic??? I have a stock ecu in my rsx type s 02-04
would this same process work with an 05 rsx auto engine harness what it looks like it has two css and what i got done to it is an 02 type s trans in it, k tuner and a k24a in it and i just figured out my vtec hasnt been working cuz no speed sensor
What would i do to add a crv mt to an eg awd swap? The trans is from a ‘04 crv. Will i be able to do this with the fueltech?
I'm interested in buying an Wlemt with JDM tax k24a swap Swapped in it but has this issue Only issue car has at the moment is the speed sensor is not reading proper voltage because it is wire to a 5v and needs to be wired to a 12v car still runs and drivers is this easy to do I also therea a converter I can buy for it

Thanks Grandpa VTEC for saving me.
I have a PRB-A15 ktuner. Do I run the blue to my ecu and then use the b17 speed out for my dash?
Cluster is a JDM Civic Si Eg cluster with no I’m and out. Just an in.
None of the EG/EK or DC2 gauge clusters have an out, they are all input only. The blue wire from the CSS or VSS should connect to pin 18 in the A plug. The VSS out is pin 25 on the E plug and should give you the corrected signal if you're setting are correct. We used the Accord ECU, so I haven't tried the 05 ECU to see if I can get that to work. My guess is it should.
@@VTECAcademy thank you so much.
@@VTECAcademy I’ll try and get back to you
Would you recommend testing each plug after doing splices, etc?
You can, but we haven't had problems doing it this way.
If you feel like you maybe should test, absolutely test. It takes a bit longer but grants a measure of sanity when troubleshooting later. I bought a swapped civic half price because they had the injector wires swapped and couldn't get it running right. Took me longer than I care to admit to figure it out but still runs fine to this day!
How would you go about changing vss to css? Using a rsx 02-04 harness. Where would you get the 5 volts from and what’s the pin out like? Obviously this Rsx plug is setup for 12v
U ever figure it out?
Please remind me the color order as per number order when looking at connector from.front...☝☝☝
It's a female connector so it is numbered from the back. ruclips.net/video/_P3V8oWBGgM/видео.html
@VTEC Academy I've got an Integra I'm putting a K20Z3 with RSX BASE 5 speed transmission into (have 02 Type S wire harness), my question is since the base trannie doesn't have 6 gear, there is no lockout mechanism? Do I just ignore the lockout plug?
Yes.
How can I make the vss work on a 2013 si stock transmission case with mf factory 1-4 gears? Can I by pass without swapping cases or taping for a speed sensor and adding ring gear ?
Wire it for CSS and use the Dakota Digital Universal Speedometer Interface.
Would this work the same for my 06 Rsx type s? The only thing different is that I have the CRV awd trans (VSS). My concern is if what you showed on the video will allow the Rsx speedometer to work?
I haven't tried that, but it should.
@@VTECAcademy so I need a 12v power to power the VSS. Wouldn’t that send a 12v from the signal wire to my Rsx ECU?
My only concern is im finding the
Solid blue
Yellow with black stripe
And black in my harness
But on my css plug i have
1 solid yellow
2 black/white stripe
3 green/ bkack strip. On my css plug.
Im going to vss.

I’ll try to answer the question tonight when we’re doing our live broadcast at 6 PM Phoenix time

I’m using RSX base harness and trans. VSS still throwing p0500. Smh
What car? What ECU?
I have an 06 type s with an 04 type s transmission. I need to do the css to vss like the video. My only concern is if I need Kpro or a tune in order for it work again. Will it turn off my CEL code for speed sensor? Will I be able to hit vtec again? Will it work normally? Will it mark the speed the same? I’m just worried if I do all the wiring and it doesn’t work if I’ll need kpro in order for it to work again
Did u ever end up finding out? Im in the same boat
@@MrEGThug I did find out a solution. You will need kpro or ktuner or some sort of end user kit, do the wiring he did here and all of it correctly also some sort of speed converter. Like a Dakota digital or you can get the ktuned one as well and do the wiring for that one into your wiring harness or ECU. I was worried I wasn’t going to get it right because he isn’t very specific about which yellow black wire to connect to in the video. I ended up just tapping it onto any yellow black wire and I haven’t had any issues with anything and it did turn off my check engine light for speed sensor but still didn’t mark speed. I still couldn’t hit vtec either. That’s where the tuner comes into play. Once you set up the tuner there will be options for a speed calibration. I use ktuner so mine had the option there for 02-04 transmission. You just have to figure out the numbers on there to make it work correctly. Also fixed my vtec issue. I do have CAI/H/E so I did reflash 2 on ktuner. If you have any questions, message me and I’ll help you out!
@@Uristypes I’m using an 08 accord five speed transmission in my 05 type s I got it running on the stock ecu but I don’t know how to switch it from vss to css
@@jonp346 you might need to do some wiring at this point bro, or in need of the tuner. Not sure how you’ll be able to get the ECU to send the signal to your dash unless it’s the same way with me, and that was with ktuner and the ktuned speed converter also doing the wiring. VSS TO CSS. Since you have an 05 type s it runs with a VSS. You might need to buy the pigtail connector for the CSS and do the wiring he does in the video, like taking out the pins and putting them into your CSS plug. Once you get it done. Connect it to the CSS and see if it changes anything
@@jonp346 if nothing changes then you know the signal is probably the opposite. Since VSS run with high frequency and CSS with low. That’s where the Dakota digital will help you if you decide to take that route
👋👍👏
Exactly.
I put a 04 rax transmission in my 06 si and im doing css to vss which wires to I need to tap in too
The signal wire from the VSS and the voltage wire and ground wire from the TPS.
Is it the same when using the z3 trans ? Lmk asap
Another question so will my cluster work on my ek with a z3 trans
I fucking hate trying to find facts.. when you’re saying the vss has a 12v signal and css has 5v signal.. yet k-tuned is saying they both have a 5v signal…
If that is what K-Tuned its saying, they're wrong. The power wire is yellow black and that wire is always 12V. VSS will still work with 5V though.
@@VTECAcademy I’m the same guy from humbles post. What pins are the 5v signal and ground?
Verified A11 tps ground and A21 TPS 5v. Just got mine wired up today
Glad you got it sorted out.
