That Wizards version of MJ made me appreciate him more than any other time in his career. It proved that it wasn’t all God given talent. Wasn’t the speed, quickness and 48 inch vertical. It was pure skill underneath all of that and he wouldn’t have been able to show that otherwise

I once saw a MJ's interview that he explicitly said he didn't regret his 1st retirement and instead he genuinely enjoyed his baseball period. His 1st retirement helped him have a good rest, physically and mentally. And during his absence, the bulls underwent rebuild, being reinforced. Those factors greatly contributed to the 2nd 3 peats. If MJ didn't retire in 93, they could make to final But I don't think their winning chance high. After all Olajuwon and his Rockets were unstoppable during 94 - 95. It's the fans' regret they never saw those 2 legends of 84 meet in final.

So they lost Horace but didnt replace him with Rodman yet. Btw Jordan gets too much individual credit for winning 6, an individual only can do so much, that's why he was 1-9 his first 3 playoff series and then lost to Pistons 3straight years. It's a team game . Bulls team defense held Sonics under 90ppg in the 96 finals while Jordan was 27pts on 41% and the TEAM defense held Utah to 54pts in a finals game in 98. Jordan is lucky Hakeem never had a teammate like prime Scottie Pippen and to not have see them in any finals.

I personally loved MJ's Wizards years. After watching him retire in 1994, and then 1998 again, the NBA wasn't the same without him. He saw another challenge and the greateast of all time felt he had gas left in the tank. His numbers weren't vintage but he was still phenomenal, a must watch player on a nightly basis. Look at his highlights from when he was 40 years old and compare that to stuff you see today from 20 and 30 year olds. He came back 20 lbs heavier, played forward, and was carrying the Wizards, who lets face it were terrible. He was much more cerebral. His skill set, footwork and moves were so tactical. He really had to pick his spots without the athletic ability. We all like the idea of walking in the sunset a champion, but when you are "the man in the arena" I think you need to have the game retire you and not the other way around. He should regret nothing. Leave no shots in the chamber.

The whole squad was ready to comeback in the '99 lockout season for the 4 peat, and they would have destroyed the Spurs. Jerry Krause got arrogant, thought that he built the team, and thought he could build another dynasty without Jordan. So no Max, he did not leave at the "perfect time". In '98 Jordan was the leading scorer and MVP of the league. He was still the bet player in the league. They would have won in 99, battled the Lakers in 00...most likely won it, then I believe trail off as Shaq is in his prime, and Kobe is beginning his 01-02, Retire in 04 with 18.5 years in the league.

I know. The events of 2005 have made defence impossible. Now everyone has 4 to 5 more ppg than they should. Players from the 80s and 90s would slaughter the current iteration of the nba. No wonder viewership has been going down steadily. I stopped watching regularly after 2014. Started watching again in 2019. 2015 to 2018 wasnt that exciting to watch. Not even the 2016 finals. Not after gsw defence got expelled from the series. Which was complete bs. Otherwise gsw should have won in 5.

Would've won in 1989, had they gotten past the Pistons. it would've started the Dynasty a year early. Possibly 1994, 1995 but missing those years are fine, MJ & The Bulls needed a breather. 1999,2000 had they stayed together - 5 legit titles they could've won. All together 5 championship possibilities strictly as a Chicago Bull.

Tbf if he had played fully from 1984 to 2004. He would not have been 20 lbs heavier in 03 which led to his injury. He may have been 9-0 from 91 to 99. Or 6-3 or anywhere in between. Hard to say how his 2000 to 2002 years would have gone. But even if he was 7-2-9 in the finals and played 20 years like kobe; his stats would have been ridicolous. He would be 42K+ in points. All time steals leader. Probably 31-32 ppg for his career average. The only reason these things are a debate bc people are comparing someone who has been playing for 17 full seasons vs someone who only played 11 full seasons. 3+4=7 total mvps vs 6+5=11 total mvps. 7 for 17 vs 11 for 11. While doing all of this in a significantly tougher era with much less help. Lebron has never won a chip without a superteam. MJ won his first chip by defeating the showtime lakers. The greatest laker team ever. Also the 2nd greatest superteam in nba history and the dynasty team of the 80s. But people who havent bothered actually watching the old games wouldnt understand. The lates 50s to the 60s was the first golden age of nba. The second one was from 1978 to 2004. But since 2014 it has been slowly improving. Hopefully the 2020s will be bettwr than 2005 to 2013 and 2014 to 2018.
