My dear departed husband and I spent 51 years together but now he has gone to a better place. Yes it is lonely round the Fields of Athenry without him albeit I live in Kent. God bless him and God bless the Dubliners for making such beautiful music and singing it so soulfully. Thank you.

I was born in England but my ancestors were Irish and left after the famine. I sang this song to a retirement community in Canberra Australia a couple of days ago and could not keep the tears back as I sang it. I noticed people in the audience also crying. It is such a sad song, and Paddy O’Reilly sings it so well. History contained some tragic situations. Let us hope that in this day and age we can all live in peace together. Unfortunately there is still so much tragedy and conflict in the world. May we all pray that this conflict is soon resolved.

I look deeper into this song and truly wish that everyone, not only on this island but beyond, that everyone can live as one, to live as human beings and love and respect every culture, race and creed. For our daughters and sons to follow to live with love and respect is all we can ever hope. I hope in my life time I shall see this happen.

      Covid is the SARS-CoV-2 Virus

    By a lonely prison wall
I heard a young girl calling
"Michael, they have taken you away
    For you stole Trevelyan's corn
So the young might see the morn
Now a prison ship lies waiting in the bay"
Low lie the fields of Athenry
Where once we watched the small free birds fly
Our love was on the wing we had dreams and songs to sing
It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry
    By a lonely prison wall
I heard a young man calling
"Nothing matters, Mary, when you're free
Against the famine and the crown
I rebelled, they cut me down
Now you must raise our child with dignity"
Low lie the fields of Athenry
Where once we watched the small free birds fly
Our love was on the wing we had dreams and songs to sing
It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry
    By a lonely harbour wall
She watched the last star falling
As that prison ship sailed out against the sky
For she lived in hope and pray
For her love in Botany Bay
It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry
Low lie the fields of Athenry
Where once we watched the small free birds fly
Our love was on the wing we had dreams and songs to sing
It's so lonely 'round the fields of Athenry

I am studying agricultural sciences and am learning about Phytophthora infestans atm, and it just strikes me hard how such a small organism, coming from Mexico on boat around 1840 to Europe has changed the history this dramatically of an entire country. Ireland has never reached its original population count since the great famine, and i have tremendous respect for those that suffered at the hands of the upperclass who refused to help. I'm getting goose bumps listening to this story told by the singer. Be proud of your heritage Ireland, be proud of your heritage Europe

I have this tune running through my mind, day and night. The Dubliners with Paddy Reilly singing is my favorite version of the song. I'm American yet it brought me to tears at first hearing. Though I'm half Russian, and quarter Scottish and English by blood I know of the famine. Going back generations I know I've kin all through the Isles for I am involved in mankind. I've much blood on my hands from the Vietnam War yet I found peace and forgiveness through Christ Jesus. No other way could release my soul from hate and anger. I listen to Bloody Sunday often and my hands still shake, but my heart is stilled by hope and faith in God. I hope and pray that the Belfast Child sings again with unbounded joy. God bless you all😊

Sult kan få alle til å stå opp mot undertrykkerne, derfor elsker jeg det Irske folket, de gjorde det.❤

A fan since they started. I don't think my so called friends that came to my 16th birthday were as impressed with my choice of music but that was their loss. This song just made me cry, beautiful.

I'm English, my parents are Scottish and from the Irish half of Glasgow. I am lucky to know and Love all these places and their songs. Was brought up with this music on the long drives up to see my Granny in the 90s. We can all get on in the future, we are so interlinked. Love Ireland Scotland and England (also lived briefly in Wales, love them too).

Great place Athenry - was on a music tour in 2013 & our group sang this song outside the walls, will never forget it ! A sad song which brings tears to my eyes. This sort of thing we don't have in South Australia, so glad I toured Ireland, North & South, such an eye opener & would love to go again, best wishes all, bjw.

@@alg9450 yes for stealing the corn from Tevellians corn stores along with a few others that rebelled and were arrested.. the old bastard Trevellian wouldnt give the corn out to the starving people when the potato fields of Athenry were wiped out by the blight...almost 25% of us Aussie have Irish heritage still. If my ggreat grandfather hadnt stolen that cow I'd be irish.
