Heard this song at every German Beer Festival when I was stationed there during the Cold War. Didn't know it was Irish until I walked into an Irish pub in West Berlin and learned otherwise. Perhaps the best beer drinking song ever.
There's something of an irony here as this is actually a C17 English 'alehouse ballad' warning of the dangers of strong drink. The Dubliners learnt this version either from Norfolk traditional singer Sam Larner or more likely from English singer Louis Killen in Newcastle in 1960 (Luke Kelly frequented his folk club). They recorded it in 1963 released it as a single and had a big chart hit in 1964. Prior to this the song was virtually unknown in Ireland and now everyone thinks it is a traditional Irish drinking song. But it ain't.
Oh, my case is even worse.I have no.Irish ancestry, and even so, I feel Irish. I asked the doctor if I should take medication for it, and he said, why take medication, whith so much good Irish whiskey available?.....And so I did, and so I do.Cheers.
@@Mas233 the clapping keeps everyone on pace when you don't have instruments. Also it's great fun to clap, stomp and pound on tables when you're out drinking with your friends. It's still fun drinking and singing songs such as these with strangers.
The last time I went over to Ireland, I went to Murrays restaurant,at the top of O'Connell Street in Dublin. That's where I heard the Wild Rover for the first time. Brilliant song. God bless Ireland, from a Welshman with Irish ancestry 🇨🇮.
Preciosa canción que escuché en algunos maravillosos pub Irlandeses. Sus paisajes y a su gente siempre las llevaré en mi corazón. Gracias Irlanda desde España🇪🇸 🇨🇮🥰🥰
It's same as everywhere else these days. Mass tourism and social networking makes it feel the same unless you're going on your own into the country to explore. Then yes to an extent.
Lyrics: Verse 1 (Paddy Reilly) I've been a wild rover for many's a year. I spent all my money on whiskey and beer. Now I'm returning with gold in great store. And I never will play the wild rover no more. Chorus (All) And it's no nay never. No nay never no more. Will I play the wild rover. No never no more. Verse 2 (Ronnie Drew) I went into an alehouse I used to frequent. And I told the landlady, my money was spent. I asked her credit, she answered me nay. "Such a custom as yours I can have any day." Chorus (All) And it's no nay never. No nay never no more. Will I play the wild rover. No never no more. Verse 3 (Sean Cannon) I took out of my pockets, ten sovereigns bright. And the landlady's eyes opened wide with delight. She said, "I have whiskeys and wines of the best. And the words that you told me were only in jest." Chorus (All) And it's no nay never. No nay never no more. Will I play the wild rover. No never no more. Verse 4 (Jim McCann) I'll go home to my parents, confess what I've done. I'll ask them to pardon their prodigal son. If the caress me as oft times before. The I never will play the wild rover no more. Chorus (All) And it's no nay never. No nay never no more. Will I play the wild rover. No never no more.
