I use my Yi 4k more than my Hero 5. That touchscreen is the best. The UI is perfect. My FAVORITE feature is the SLOW MOTION SETTING. No shooting, upload and edit. It's all right there. Definitely, getting the Yi 4K Plus.
I"ve been following Yi for a while now after a few trips to China. It's an amazing product for sure and I'm a big GoPro guy and live in San Diego. This Yi 4k plus is BADASS.
This is by far one of the best channel to help grow a RUclips channel. I have over 2k subscribers all thanks to you, Sean. You deserve over a millions subscribers, Sir. Much love from Florida =)
Was looking at getting a 4k camera without breaking the bank. This review really helped. I'm sold. I live in Las Vegas and those shots of Lee Canyon in snow were great.
for the price I don't think you can beat it. When I was looking for a budget action camera I stumbled upon this video. I purchased the yi 4k once I had enough and I've been really happy with it.
I'm a guy who already owns 5 different action cams. I have to admit, the video quality from this Yi camera looked very good in this video. Yes, impressive. In late 2016 I bought myself a 4K action cam, it was only $80. As you can guess, the video image looks pretty crappy, no doubt a low quality sensor. Next time I am buying an action cam, I'll keep the Yi 4K in mind, your video review swayed me in that direction.
Just stopping by to congratulate you on all the success. I started watching you almost from the start and now I see your channel has grown a lot! Good stuff!
Amazing Video! I really wish there were more reviewers like you. Your video was prompt, covered each and every point about the product. And made me reach a buying call. I was looking for a budget action cam for my cycling and a little other adventures...also shooting kids and all!! And was super confused between going for gopro hero 6 or yi4k. I believe this will solve all my purpose!!! No one anywhere mentioned that even Yi app has quick edit feature.... Great review! Thanks
I own this camera and I'm mostly happy. Two points. #1 Battery life is NOT good. Buy extra batteries! #2 maybe I don't know how to do it, but I wanted to record some footage in "Stealth mode"(w/out making to many "Beep" sounds that cameras these days make) and I went in the menu looking for a way to mute the, let me call them, "menu command beeps". But there seem to be no way to do this. If you hit "Mute", you'll hear no "Beeps" but you'll record video w/out sound! >>>Do I need a Firmware upgrade?...or...Does this camera just doesn't have that capability? On a different note, this seems to be a great deal!
Can you do a video on how to update the firmware on this Yi 4K camera please! The link is NOT found and when Plug into power source, cannot turn on camera? Please help! Thanks.
Love the videos and reviews man, plus i really love the poster behind you "if you never want to be criticized, dont do anything new". thanks again for the reviews and keep it up!
Hi Sean, Thanks for the video. I went out to purchase one after watching your video - perfect timing for my upcoming Great Wall trip. I do have some inputs for the manufacturer. First, I bought it from Amazon, and I paid $137. I think this price is reasonable knowing how much I paid for my GoPro. My first impression was, it has good workmanship. The stick seems to be sturdy and feels good in my hand. Its weight (stick plus camera) feels just right. That said, I think a few things can be improved: 1). The English instruction is not clear. It was probably written by someone who is not a professional English technical writer. Some of the technical words used are not those which are commonly used in the US. Overall, the printed and online literature and instructions in the app are confusing and in need of improvement. 2). The camera lens came with a thin temporary protective plastic layer. I would suggest providing a permanent removable cap for protecting the camera’s lens when the camera is not in use. 3). This is minor but probably worth mentioning. The small bronze-color cap on the stick’s bottom where the lanyard is connected to appears to be cheesy. I think it will look better if it is black or white and made of similar material with the camera mount. Thank you Sean for sharing.
I am awaiting the release of the 4k plus which is due in ten days. Hoping to get it nice and early as I live in China so hopefully will get early shipping. it has the advantage of USB C, external MIC and stabilized 4K. Great vid as per usual!!
We move on. I was getting a bit tired of the barrel distortion that my little action cameras give, so I thought it time to move up to a Yi 4k. This is one interesting Chinese camera, and is by far the best action cam I've ever used. At £122.50 including its dedicated underwater housing, it's the most expensive action cam I've bought. A quick rundown shows it's beautifully made, has an excellent 2¼'' rear touch screen, takes genuine 12 MP stills and has a top movie resolution of 4k (3840x2160) at a proper 25 FPS. It shoots timelapse and slo-mo, it records stereo through two tiny onboard mics, has a built in loudspeaker, a tripod socket, spare batteries are less than £6 each and they're charged in situ via USB. It has all sorts of other tricks up its sleeve, but for me the biggest selling point (do I actually NEED another action cam?) is the fact that you can film and shoot stills in a genuine undistorted picture mode. So byebye barrel distortion with all its bendy telegraph poles and curvy horizons, and hello to the very wide angle rectilinear mode. I use this all the time. OK, it doesn't see quite as wide as when filming in the barrel distorting mode, but isn't a 17mm field of view of 104° (35 mm equivalent) wide enough for you? The picture quality is nothing short of breathtaking on a 4k TV, very sharp indeed. I have handheld shots taken inside King's Cross station, and then I look at the untouched central blow-up, where every sign can be read. Then there's comparison shots, taken seconds apart from the same place, showing the different field of views when the distortion is dialled out. I am very impressed indeed with this Yi 4k, and have done some pixel-peeping in Photoshop to see if the non-distorting mode sacrifices resolution. I'm pleased to say it doesn't, the only loss is in absolute field of view coverage.
Please please just have look here and reply me . My question is, how is the focusing feature for closeup shot. Im looking for vlogging like sitting in room and want to make videos. So this camera will help to make close up shoot with better face focus or not???
I believe you can plug an external mic into the USB charging port. Don't see any reviews mention this. But the yi site says it supports mice via the charging port.
How funny I've been following your videos for a while now and it got me by surprise that you actually went to where I work at montage laguna beach, it would haved been a pleasure to meet you 😀
hi there, I am trying to buy an action camera on a budget and looks like this is a very good option, I will be using this camera on a motorcycle helmet, the questions is if this camera has some time of remote control where I could stop recording and start the recording without touching the camera. thanks in advance for your reply.
Here's a question. What is the real capabilities of the processor. Is this thing up-scaling footage from HD? Is the frame rate, legit. Meaning slow motion etc. Is it fame accurate? Or is doubling up frames?
Thanks for the sincere video. I am making a decision in which one to buy, either the YI 4K or the 4K+, I don't think I need the 60fps for 4k video. But having the ability to connect and external Bluetooth mic, or having voice control commands are very important to me in an action camera. Do you know if the YI 4K supports now the possibility to connect a mic or supports voice command with a firmware upgrade?
Thank you for this review, I am looking for another action camera to replace my Apeman which no longer works properly, and I am going with the Yi 4K Action. At this point in time, July 2019, it is on Amazon for $98, while the 4K+ is twice that, $199. For me, the only real advantage I see with the 4K+ is 4k/60FPS, which really is not worth double the price for me. I am not professional, I just do homegrown YT videos, and if I want to do slo-mo stuff I can always use 1080/120FPS, I would be fine with that. Good review, I like your approach, just subscribed!
Thanks for the comprehensive review ! I think I'm going to get this camera, but I'm also looking at the SJCAM SJ7 which has similar features but is a bit cheaper and comes with accessories such as a waterproof housing.
Hi! Thanks once more for such a great communication, great! Is this better than the thiEye? Yes I saw your video on the thiEye!... Isn't the sound and image better? I'm in between those two! Please reply! Thanks
Just got this for $200 NZ on Aliexpress (like 120 US) fingers crossed my money is well spent. Was using the original Yi and its incredible for so cheap, especially those 16MP pics
You mention the extra tripod mount for attaching to waterproof case, is that included in the Kupton accessory pack? If not, do you have a link? Great review!
There is no support for external microphone. But unless you're vlogging on a professional level, the built-in mic is good enough. Example: I use it for amateur moto vlogging and mount the cam on the front of the helmet (with waterproof casing) and the mic can still pick-up my voice because where I live there are no long straight roads to ride fast so there is no wind noise. The price is considerable between 4k and 4k+ so unless you want to use it on a professional level, 4k is good enough and the price is amazing.
I was wondering if a gimbal capable of doing 360deg timelapse w/ a smartphone work when using an action cam like this one? Or does that only work w/ smartphones + the gimbal's app?
Trip I would be cautious with anything coming from Aliexpress. They sell so much replica "fake" products, I will never shop with them. Hope you have good luck!
I feel you do a pretty good review! I'm getting tired of the gopro products, because they seem to record out of sync with the audio, the picture quality of the video is terrible in low light conditions as I'm seeing in comparison with new cameras these days. I'm still in the dino era of these cameras. I still have a couple of gopro hero 3's. I can't stand the offset of the audio and video syncs. And for xmas, my wife got me a gopro session, it's not the 4k version, but it's a terrible camera also. I can't seem to delete any pictures or videos on the fly, I basically have to get home on my computer and delete or review. And sometimes when I mean to just touch the button and start recording with the session, apparently, I must've accidentally, and not knowingly touched the only button besides the small button on the back, and it set the camera to take still pictures rather than record a video. And then when I get home to my computer, I will realize that I don't have videos, and it's just one picture. I can't stand this camera now. I do like the compact size of the gopro but, I don't really mind a camera that's larger in size. I just want a decent priced camera that will do it's job correctly. I'm not a techy guy as I think I am. Others seem to know more about tech stuff. Also, I can't seem to wifi connect with my gopro to my phone at all. I have a profile account. I'm able to bring up the app on my computer, but not my phone with gopro. So, I will prolly look into this YI 4K camera. It seems to have more features than my session. I just would like 4K quality. Not interested in the slow motion just yet. I basically ride a motorcycle everyday to work and back and would like to get good picture quality in case of an incident, to protect myself legally. Anyhow, thanks for the good review.
How long does the battery last in cold like skiing? I can hit the slope with a fully charged Hero 4, turn it on 2 hours later (so it's at ambient temp) and only get about 15 minutes recording time when the temp is below 15 degreesF
Hii! Thank you so much for your review. So helpful!! I have a question, Is it possible to plug external mic by using adapter cable and put it on the usb port in that camera?
Great review Sean! Thanks for all the hard work. I was wonder about rolling shutter on this camera. I have used the Hero 4 for a motorcycle video I did and the footage was almost unusable. The wobble and distortion was distracting. Did you notice rolling shutter in this Yi 4K? Thanks again.
I use my Yi 4k more than my Hero 5. That touchscreen is the best. The UI is perfect. My FAVORITE feature is the SLOW MOTION SETTING. No shooting, upload and edit. It's all right there. Definitely, getting the Yi 4K Plus.
Right!?! I agree the UI is amazing. And the footage and features are solid!
THiNK Media TV I'm definitely going to be considering this now! Thank you.
Tentative Dan I'd hold off till the Yi 4k PLUS is coming out the 28th. USB type C and 4k at 60 fps. Also, a couple lil updates too.
James Ebenger wow thanks! Saved me a little regret lol. Thank you for the info :) I appreciate it.
James Ebenger have you got the app for your phone it's amazing for leaving the camera set up for a time lapse and checking in later.
I"ve been following Yi for a while now after a few trips to China. It's an amazing product for sure and I'm a big GoPro guy and live in San Diego. This Yi 4k plus is BADASS.

Awesome little camera. Have been using it way before it was even officially released and it works great!
instaBlaster.
his videos get me motivated to put as much work as I can into my new RUclips channel.
Was looking forward to this review! Enjoyed the longer in-depth video!
I own this camera and used it on some of my videos. When I am not using it the battery never dies. The last time I charged it was before Christmas 😃

Thanks for posting this! That footage of the lodge and sun overhead is just insane, awesome scenes. Driving through the mountains looked awesome too!
Best coverage of this camera I've seen yet.
I bought one yesterday. Thanks for the info!!

Is it compatible with the action camera They t5e?
can we record/capture on mobile app?
With Love from India
this is the second yi camera... have the first one and can't get enough of it...but hope to buy this one
Jorge Maia wait for the 4K+ out this month in China. Internationally will be available through dedicated sites
thanks for the tip @fromchinawithlove
Great informative video!
I have the regular Yi action cam that does 1080p. It's really good. Thinking about upgrading to the 4K version soon. Good review.
Hello I just got this camera what would you say is the best all around settings for the outside for fishing? Thanks
What camera do you use to shoot your videos. Like this one.

Excellent review. I just purchased the camera thanks to you. I can't wait!
Does it focus on detail? like for example if you focused on your hand will it show all the lines & stuff on the palm of your hand?
Please please just have look here and reply me . My question is, how is the focusing feature for closeup shot. Im looking for vlogging like sitting in room and want to make videos. So this camera will help to make close up shoot with better face focus or not???
nice video...keep it up...your channel is growing really fast...good job
I believe you can plug an external mic into the USB charging port. Don't see any reviews mention this. But the yi site says it supports mice via the charging port.
Shrimp Zoo that's the yi 4K plus out march 28 in China. I think that's internationally too.
How funny I've been following your videos for a while now and it got me by surprise that you actually went to where I work at montage laguna beach, it would haved been a pleasure to meet you 😀
whats it record on to memeory card? whens the yi 4k plus coming out? 3 axis gimble wheres that from and what make?
Thank you so much. I am going to buy this. How can I put it on a helmet?
im liking this camera. would this fit in the regular gimble?
Great review. Thanks!

yes Sean! I've been waiting my whole life for this review to come out!! (just an exaggeration)
can we use the hdmi out for external monitoring or external hardware recording?
Here's a question. What is the real capabilities of the processor. Is this thing up-scaling footage from HD? Is the frame rate, legit. Meaning slow motion etc. Is it fame accurate? Or is doubling up frames?
What do you edit the footage on? What is the best budget, easy to use software?

I would like to know what kinda of mic is compatible to record exhaust videos. I have one of these thanks
wow dang looks amazing! audio sounds better than gopro
Thank you for this review, I am looking for another action camera to replace my Apeman which no longer works properly, and I am going with the Yi 4K Action. Thanks for the comprehensive review ! I think I'm going to get this camera, but I'm also looking at the SJCAM SJ7 which has similar features but is a bit cheaper and comes with accessories such as a waterproof housing.
battery backup is essential for me in action cameras 😊
Yay another review, love the videos Sean
Can I get the video from this camera onto my phone and maybe upload it to instagram
Does the Newmow 3-Channel battery charger work for gopro batteries as well?
Where is the link for the "tripod mount screw piece"?
Trying to get 24 to 48 on sample and bit rate. Would running at 1080p at 30fps or 60fps work for me?
Hi! Thanks once more for such a great communication, great! Is this better than the thiEye? Yes I saw your video on the thiEye!... Isn't the sound and image better? I'm in between those two! Please reply! Thanks
Thanks for helping me make up my mind! I'm going to purchase the yi 4k because of the price and near go pro hero5 quality
How does it stack up vs SJCAM SJ7 Star or Firefly 8S?
I know you have done a camera review about the thieye camera how does this compare to that and could I use go pro mounts
Wonderful video/review where can I find the mount that you said u had to buy seperate that fits on the bottom of the water proof case
Just got this for $200 NZ on Aliexpress (like 120 US) fingers crossed my money is well spent. Was using the original Yi and its incredible for so cheap, especially those 16MP pics
What would be a good solution for a microphone to capture audio for the yk ? Since no cable option ? Thanks 🙏
hi what camera you used for this video? canon 80d?
Great review!!
Where'd you get those posters?
Do the software works as good.on mac as it does on the pc or is it better for one or the other
great video sean!
Hi, what video standard do u use? NTSC or PAL? Is there a YT best to use?
vs hero 5 ? Which one would you pick considering the gopro hero 5 is 300 and the yi 4k is 170 us dollars ?
I'm curious what the slow motion rates will be on the new Yi + in 1080p and 720p. I would love to see a 240fps option, that would be killer!
Is there an external mic you can buy?
I have a question what is the view like on the screen out in the sun thanks like your reports just starting to try and get a grip on action camera
LOOKS GREAT, THANK YOU FOR THIS MATE.
Best setting in Yi 4k for post video editing?
OK, I'm sold. What (best budget both option pls) hand held gimbal would you recommend for XIAOMI YI 4K? EVO GP-PRO seems to be above my budget
Don't you have a problem with the audio since it's in the waterproof case to do anything? Wish it had at least some water resistance like the Hero.
great vid. What depth is there water proof case rated at?
You mention the extra tripod mount for attaching to waterproof case, is that included in the Kupton accessory pack? If not, do you have a link? Great review!
Hello, I just bought this. Can I have use external microphone WITH the waterproof case for moto vlogging
I'm thinking of buying the Yi 4k Action Camera too. Did you try to plug in a external microphone? Does it work?
There is no support for external microphone. But unless you're vlogging on a professional level, the built-in mic is good enough.
Example: I use it for amateur moto vlogging and mount the cam on the front of the helmet (with waterproof casing) and the mic can still pick-up my voice because where I live there are no long straight roads to ride fast so there is no wind noise.
The price is considerable between 4k and 4k+ so unless you want to use it on a professional level, 4k is good enough and the price is amazing.
Hey Sean, Any idea how to use an external mic with Yi 4K? Heard the external thing only comes with plus version? Is it true? Thanks!
YI 4K vs ThiEye will be a great video
does this support loop recording so that this can double up as a dash cam?
Does it support external microphone?
I was wondering if a gimbal capable of doing 360deg timelapse w/ a smartphone work when using an action cam like this one? Or does that only work w/ smartphones + the gimbal's app?
Trip I would be cautious with anything coming from Aliexpress. They sell so much replica "fake" products, I will never shop with them.
Hope you have good luck!
Hello !
Can this camera(not yi 4kplus version) shoot raw format photo ?
Thanks !

Hii! Thank you so much for your review. So helpful!!
I have a question, Is it possible to plug external mic by using adapter cable and put it on the usb port in that camera?
Great video
so where i get lost, the waterproof case loses the ability to record sound from the mic, right?
Thank you for the info
Great review Sean! Thanks for all the hard work. I was wonder about rolling shutter on this camera. I have used the Hero 4 for a motorcycle video I did and the footage was almost unusable. The wobble and distortion was distracting. Did you notice rolling shutter in this Yi 4K? Thanks again.
can we HDMI out to the field monitor? thanks
Hey Sean, great video! how do you compare this with the ThiEYE T5e that you have reviewed in the past?
I have a gopro session and I think will switch "allegiance" after this video!
