One of the best Action Cam reviews I've seen so far. All the real situation footage + the useful hints about functions (e.g. that you show how that HDMI output looks and so on) really helps to make a buying decision.
@Joao Geraldes All the LEDs can be tuned off (which makes the operation pretty confusing).

Andrey Viktorovich The samples are working fine for other people, so the problem is at your end. Usual suggestions apply - use the Chrome Browser, don't be impatient...wait a minute for the page to load.
Other sites have restrictions with bandwidth and my samples have been automatically deleted, I've used lots of different paid file sharing sites and spent hundreds of pounds doing it - nothing has worked other than Dumptruck.
Techmoan I've been waiting of download five hours until now, and I've used Google Chrome. Maybe it is sanctions against Russia in the action =)

bob builder No and I'm not planning on now - I don't need to use one on my bike with my new mounting method, and I never do any water based activities.
Techmoan It's been noted all over the web that Xiaomi's focus is off when leaving the factory. Opening the front of the case and adjusting the focus manually yields a much sharper image. It is extremely easy to do, and doesn't make it a deal breaker for me or most people.
Techmoan I dont see this with mine. Im using it on a gimbal for my quadcopter and its image is perfect. maybe i got lucky for once! it definitely out performs my mobius
Andy L Mine had the focus problem as well. While not a deal breaker for me I will not recommend it until they fix the QC issues (focus and audio). There are too many people with these problems.
Fantastic camera! Love the in camera barrel effect corrector...everything seemed way above average in this price range.
stonedcommander Yes - this camera appears to have focussed on video quality above everything else. It's good that Xiaomi decided to concentrate on what was important to them - because at this price you have to pick a priority, unlike a £400 action camera that tries to tick all the boxes.

Great video. I like the way you presented this video. You are not showing off, screaming, nor annoying music. Other reviewers loves to show off, screaming, with annoying music, ect. that instead of a reviewer looks like a comedian, and that's so annoying. Thanks for your good video.

I have a Gopro 4 black and silver and I just got the Xiaomi this week and wow its great. Just been using as a dashcam today in Perth WA with very bright sunny weather and works excellent. Got it for $99 delivered from Banggood

BrownBrady How much wider do you need? Isn't it 150 degree??? That's crazy wide. Most of his shots were in the no fisheye mode which narrows the FoV quite a bit.
toysareforboys Oh I missed that part. 150 degrees is definitely wider than my 135 degree action cam (Liquid Image EGO). Thanks for clarifying.

doubledoubleandfries Sorry, my post was a bit misleading. Some of the professional audio gear I bought included a ROLAND-R-05 digital recorder. I would never EVER use ANY action camera to record audio, even with an external mic :)

Got one of these, and as you say, its a great little toy. And interesting enough, that little lid covering the ports and SD-card got lost. And I haven't had the thing for more than an hour. Impressive! :)

The icons on the screen of the camera look exactly like my G90 dashcam. I saw that when u plugged it in your tv. I dont know if it is just a firmware coincidence or they also share some of the hardware, but the videos are decent, you get just what you ve paid for. Thanks for another great review

I am pleasantly surprised. The build quality seems very nice. Control over the wifi and phone works well. And the picture quality is very good. It copes well with changing light conditions. And the sound quality is surprising for such a small camera (suffers from wind noise though). I placed 2 videos on my channel so have a look...
I am still waiting for the waterproof case.

I have just bought my yi. This review helped me to decide, I find this review accurate and to the point, I couldn't be happier with my decision. Video quality is really good, metering is good and mostly seamless, colors are accurate, not oversaturated but still there, and not sure if other cameras have it but lens correction mode works great for me, I leave it on all the time, I can even use this as a regular tourist video camera as my Fuji makes much worse videos most of the time. This killed gopro for me...

One of the main reasons you buy a gopro IS the image stabilisation, which is the essential point for me personally. Rest is okay and is definetly a great quality for the money.

I get to work on her tomorrow and see if she has the focus bug some others have out of the box.
auto start stop could verywell be added as a firmware mod, along with repurposing the power ring.
for an action cam it'd make an awsome dash cam, based on video / sound quality alone.
a piggyback LCD would make it a wicked compact camera too.
It's worth investing into newer action cameras packed with features like the DJI action 2. They gave me free casing too.
Excellent review. One suggestion is to shoot a demo a "night party" indoor scene. Many times at a party we would love to take photos and videos without flash,, however not many affordable cameras give you usable quality. On the other hand almost any cheap camera can give "good enough" results outdoors between dawn and dusk. Cheers.
Looks good. I think a firmware upgrade to auto start recorded when the camera goes on would be the best feature... that and a waterproof case.

A lot of Yi cameras died during firmware update. Some stories on dashcamtalk forum.
I like the LED led color indicator for battery level. And the Sony IMX206 CMOS is doing great job.
I think for the price range of this camera. It's pretty damn impressive. Also, Great Review!!!
great video, just bought one, a great deal for the price, better than a GoPro in my opinion
There was small problem, when i received the camera, it has been focused to about 30 cm distance. So I disassembled it, removed the fixnig glue and did refocusing. And now I am really satisfatied wit YI.. :-)
Got one, its really good, excellent video quality, especially for the price! I paid 90€ for it..
Only downside that i see is the mic clips fairly easily. In a loud environment the sound distorts quite a lot, at least without the protective case.
And be careful when updating the firmware, you can brick the camera, if you have any trouble whit that, there are some tutorials on how you update it manually.

according to other 'sources' this camera is in effect the same as the gopro 4 (not gopro 4 black) in regard to processor and maybe imager.
This Xiaomi Yi camera is unreal for the cost! The picture quality is perfect. Hope it will serve me well in my journey to Rome! Very nice purchase from Qwy.io. Price was incredible!

That has a very nice sensor in it, and considering the price it might worth picking up if you jus wanted another angle for action footage. I have seen on a site that I get some knock off stuff from a camera that uses the SJ4000 sensor but has a mic in option, it is called the Dazzne P2 if you are interested in giving it a look.
Would you say this takes better video than a smartphone camera eg. Galaxy S5 etc?

Hey there, would be nive if you'd make a little Spreadsheet about compairing the Cameras, so people could pick their favourite in terms of functionality and quality and price.
The Sony AS100 has been cheap since the 4k version came out. Amazon had it for $149, $229 with the wrist monitor. Great system. I think it is better, with the housing, at that price. But I'm impressed with this camera. I use Quake Putty to hold a Mobius to my ebike handlebars. Very solid, and seems to absorb some shock.
Xiaomi makes some decent smartphones. Lots going on in this arena. These are great reviews and I hope you are feeling better.
There is a software update for the camera. I think they watched your review and made a couple of changes. The photos are now taken almost instantly when you push the button. Also the front LED ring flashes once when a photo is taken and continually flashes while recording. There's also a few new options in the settings through the app after the update.

The most popular action camera in Indonesia (with 3.5mm microphone jack added on the back of the camera).
I got this one too right now and with the newest firmware ( 1.2.13 ) it seems you can use it as a dashcam. I tried it but it does not work. You still have to push the start button before driving. The ring flashes with the little red lights while recording. Now you can switch all the lights off or leave just the little status lights on.
Thanks for this review and this was the reason for me to buy this thing. It works with free android apps and with a paid WIndows phone app. ( €1,99 )

Why not upload videos @60 fps Techmoan, youtube supports it! Nice camera for the price, no need to buy a gopro if you are on a budget and like the form factor. For me the most importing lacking feature is Wide, Medium and Narrow Angle setting that any gopro offers as I am used to setup gopro usually medium angle for aerial videos on a quadcopter! But again fantastic price and quality!

1080p60 looks worse than 1080p30 on RUclips.
There is a newer version available, V1.0.7, and the bitrate can be increased easily and apparently with great results using the Ambarella Firmware Tool. In the linux partition there is something referring to the rotation, but i cannot test it as i haven't got the camera.
Great review. I was looking to buy an action camera and thought this is the one. Well pointed out that you just don't know if its recording .So its an almost bought but not with that dreadful on off operation. Also why not put a screen on the back?

I am still working on my own review of this camera.
One thing I noticed is that sometimes it takes a while to connect to WiFi, where as in other cases it connects right away. Also it heats a bit more then sj4000. In latest 1.0.7 there is an AV Output, which RC type of people like to have.
Can you only change the settings by using a phone? The camera itself has no screen so I would guess you need to do it that way.

This was very helpful, the camera's video quality is in favor for me, but how does the Microphone compare to other action cameras (SJ5000 or even a GoPro).
A detachable screen would be very useful, for setup and other basic functions.

Good review as usual. I'm beginning to regret now cancelling my order. I went instead for the latest Mobius with the C lens. Its a shame there's no PC setup option I don't have an Android device. I believe Android Apps can now be run on PCs but I don't know if its possible to use them to communicate with this camera.
I was thinking about buying this but one major issue comparing to GoPro without miniscreen is you can't change any setting on the camera itself. Since there is no miniscreen to see the setting. I think this is a big issue when it comes your cellphone is out. It became useless.
