Thanks for this amazing review. Yeah as @idrinkforbadges said the mic has to be from our official YI Technology as we have the unique data processing unit :)) and for any of you guys have any questions about YI Action Cameras just leave comment here and I can answer :)
Cool review and an overall good product but I womder how it fares when it comes to artifacting? For example, I see some pretty visible aliasing on the wooden sidewalk floor in the park shot at 7:45. Any tips on how to prep the camera to reduce (or avoid) this? Thanks!
is the battery same with the YI 4K? and also can you give recommendation for the best performing battery for the YI 4K+ apart from the original that I can buy loose
Nailed the review. Some corrections, you can't just buy any USB-C to 3.5mm adapter, it won't work. You need to buy the cable specifically from Yi, which is currently out of stock (correction, back in stock now as of yesterday at the Yi Store). If you put it into the Yi Gimbal, because the right mic is up against the motor, you will hear motor noise. Fortunately, you can flip the gimbal arm around on the Yi Gimbal so that the right mic is not pressed up against the motor. Take a look at my channel for the gimbal motor noise tests. Also, you fail to mention that with the Go Pro Hero 5 Black, you can only shoot at a bitrate of 60Mbps at 4K 30fps. With the Yi 4K+ you can shoot 4K 60fps at 135Mbps at the highest setting, so a big difference in image quality. I also started a subreddit for the latest up to date discussion about the Yi 4K+ at: www.reddit.com/r/yi4kplus/
Thank you for these updates! 1. Have you tested any other cables? Would love to find one that works while waiting for the restock. 2. Great point about bit rates - game changer. 3. What do you think about my summary at the end of this video? What is your opinion on GoPro 5 Black VS. Yi 4K+? Keep crushing it! Sean
1. I have not personally tested other cables, but when the 4K+ came out, it took about 30 days for Yi to finally release their USB-C to 3.5mm cable. During those 30 days, a lot of people have bought and tested cables, and all did not work. 2. Definitely a game changer, and there is nothing currently available in the action camera market that will have 4K 30fps with EIS or 4K 60fps, except for the Yi 4K+ which is the reason that I bought it. Sony does, but it doesn't have a screen for this same price point, and can't do 4K 60fps. 3. Great summary. As with every product, everyone has to evaluate what features they want and what they will use. Do you want 4K 60fps? Do you want 4K 30fps with EIS? Do you want to use an external mic? Do you want 135Mbps bitrate? If yes to any of these questions, get the Yi 4K+ Do you want an action camera that doesn't need a waterproof case, and don't care about all the above features because the highest setting you are going to use is 1080p 120fps? Get the Go Pro Hero 5 Black. Finally, if you don't care about 4K 60fps, and don't need an external mic (can't use external mic on original Yi 4K), and are on a budget, the original Yi 4K is an fantastic deal for $180-$199
It's nice to see that the original Yi 4K got a nice bump in image quality in the beta firmware from Yi. Before, you had to use the bitrate hack. They are also doing great things in the firmware like improving the color. I love that Yi is able to roll out these changes and improvements to the firmware very quickly, unlike Go Pro, who is very slow at these changes.
I've been watching your videos for like 8 months now, but I realized that I never subscribed. Well, now I have. You are inspiring and you put out great products. Thanks bro
you missed the most important fact of the yi. 155 degree lens! this gets rid of a lot of fisheye right out of the box. 2 ya have to pull out the battery when not in use.
I have original YI4K: I figured out that I get better IQ out of camera if I shoot 4K and defish in post and still wider view and room for post production stabilisation, if I shoot 2,7K with defish on. I hardly wait to get 60p version to have best of both.
AWESOME video. I almost bought the YI 4k camera until I saw one of your videos mentioning that a new camera was going to be released. I'll be picking one up. Thanks a lot Sean. 👌
the yi4k bitrates now have a option to be set higher , the highest being 100 . Also it now has raw photos option . It will soon have voice control, and manuel controls features and so on. Also the color has been corrected and will soon have the yi4K plus Color pattern.
Just curious as to the onboard audio with this camera vs GoPro etc. Would like to use this when out and about on the trails etc, but don't really want to drag along an external mic if not needed.
Yi has just responded to my latest support ticket informing me that it will now be a 3rd month until we see Live Streaming which they boasted as a feature of the Yi 4k plus. this is the second full month delay. I don't think owners are going to see this feature anytime soon.
I have also tested the Yi 4K+, and I also noticed that its biggest glaring weakness is sound quality. The audio is practically unusable, even when using the external mic adapter and connecting a quality external mic. The sound is tinny and noisy. The ironic thing is that its much cheaper non-4K sibling, the Yi Lite, has very good usable audio (records bass!) from its internal mic. This issue was addressed to Yi over a year ago, but there has been no response, thus far. Sound quality is very important when using these cameras for vlogging and travel.
I just need a camera like the playsport zx5 from kodak, but all can i find are paper cameras that only record in 3rd persona, i need a camera were i can see what i am recording and i can put in my pocket and climb mountains, GoPro is not what i need because not show what i see like a cameraman.
Very informative and very good review. I am using it since one year super smooth and super cool 😎. C Type connector for charging and for external mic setting is like iceing on the cake. Bottom quarter inch thread is superb to connect your tripod or gimbal. It helps me for bike blogging. Keep it bro.
Think Media TV, how can one shoot flat with this camera? The 2.7k crop actually looks like high bitrate HD.Thanks for the outdoor test shots, slo-mo is a convincer...
Thank you for your review! It's very helpful to my decision to buy new action cam. And also I'm not goot at English, but your explanation is easy too understand. Thanks for everything! :-)
Cool review and an overall good product but I womder how it fares when it comes to artifacting? For example, I see some pretty visible aliasing on the wooden sidewalk floor in the park shot at 7:45. Any tips on how to prep the camera to reduce (or avoid) this? Thanks!
Do you know how much space is needed to shoot 4K in 30/60fps per minute or hour? Im considering becouse i want to buy this cam and of course i need to buy SD card. And i want to know, are YI 4K compatible with 4K+? Thanks for answer
What I would like to see is the integration of bluetooth voice recording in the Yi 4K or 4K +. That would really seal the deal against the GoPro!! I use a Sena communication system when I ride my motorcycle and if you want to record your voice for vlogging, you have to use a bluetooth piggy-back device to record it on video. Now, if the Yi would integrate that onto the camera, it would be amazing!
Plz Suggest i wana buy this for music video, my idea is to shoot in 4k and to remove the fish eye/ lens distortion in premier pro editing. Will it be good enough like other dslr camera
Yi is bringing out a new gimbal for the 4K with a 3.5mm mic input and cold shoe. Sounds like the ideal vlogging rig in all but very low light. No info on date yet though.
What are your settings because my yi 4k+ seems to have some blurring in the background roughly in the 10-20 yards at 4k60fps and it is not nice at all. Edit December 8th, 2018, the camera had a defect and has been replaced since. Everything is perfect now.
You need the waterproof case that comes with it... but then yes... you could use that with car mounts, body, head, etc. from gopro. Sometimes is a little tight "fit-wise" - but I've always got it to work with my gopro or generic accessories.
THiNK Media TV I still want to try Go Pro. I want a waterproof camera that doesnt need s case. Plus I like the look of their app. Also I want to buy the camera from Best Buy so I can get their warranty
Just purchased my Yi 4k Plus over the weekend. I used your video review for my determination. I do some amateur photography, and I run a lot of races and obstacle courses so this should do well. I got mine for $329.00. I'm looking for a gimbal that works for my phone and Yi, but so far... no dice. Any suggestions?
Hello Sean, another great video. Could you do a video on best equipment needed and best set up to make unboxing/review videos please? A video where the reviewer is behind the camera ideally using a smart phone? Thanks
I love my Yi4k. I use it more than my Hero 5. Looking forward to getting the Yi4k+ so I can use an external mic. Hopefully, they release the Yi Gimbal 2 soon.
I just picked one up on a crazy lightning deal from amazon. I was looking to replace my SJCam 5000 and looking at some initial comparisons of just the view finder, I can see that this will be a pretty good improvement and audio on the SJcam was trash. So I can do a little more with this one in the car and on the go. Stoked. That 2.7 wide view setting is clutch. Ill have to play around with that.
accelerometer= measuring how fast you are accelerating/going up in speed. one of my concerns is the flimsy usb cover, I saw a another review mentioning it coming undone often, so for my use it would be a big concern getting it full of mud.
Is that really just an indicator light on the front that will effect the video at night or does it double as a flash for pictures? Can it be turned off in the settings? Great video.
so my partner and I own a pet sitting company. We want to start taking shots and videos of our "adventures" and possible doing some light vloging and such. We were thinking about getting the small drone from dji when it comes out ($500) and a classical cannon 70D but do you think we could get by with this action camera or a go pro since we could also use those action shots capabilities that we wouldn't have with a DSLR?
Just bought this on amazon prime day for $270. Not a bad deal, eh? You can also get the 4k standard white version for $140, which I was almost tempted to buy instead just cause that's such a great deal.
Please answer my questionn I have just buy a yi 4k+ camera, i using sd card class 10 16Gb, but when i record video, my video divided into multiple clips when I recording. Every clips about 1 minute or less. So, how can record video with video length 1hour or better. Thany you so much
I heard one review which said that the usb cover would fly open by it self. But, I think that Yi has fixed that problem because my new yi + does not have that problem. Therefor about your tight cover. You'll probably damage your usb cover by using a knife. They do sell finger nail strengthener which might help. lol
Hey man! Thanks for the video! I'm seriously considering the xiaoyi 4K action camera for filming my workout sessions haha. Anyway, thanks again for the review! :)
I like the kit of the Yi 4k but I'm not able to use an external mic. Should I wait for possibly a new Yi to come out and get this Yi 4k+ at a lower price or do you not think there will be another one coming out soon and I have to get the accessories separate? Thank you!
I need to do more tests... I've used it a lot on the Yi 4K (not "+") and it's good. But keep in mind... it won't come close to producing the kind of footage a gimbal does.
Hi Think Media, i have a question on this camera. Is the firmware able to handle syncing at the moment ? On the Yi 4k you can sync several cameras using a syncing cable, but is this camera able to do so ? Is it supported by the firmware ?
Does anybody know - I am not sure if the Yi 4K Plus (that uses a type C Connector) would be good enough to add a Rode Mic Pole kit. Has anybody used that set up with an action camera? What would be the quality because the chord (Around 20 Feet) would be attached to the end of a Yi Type C Connector. Would result in good video. Or should I get a different Camera for that. ((Vlogging I'd be doing))
Hi , Can I use the USB-C charging cable that came with the 4k+ camera to transfer data like pictures and videos ? If not what cable you recommend to use for this purpose ? please send me link/s. Thanks
Another dope review!!! i'm thinking using a smartphone and an action camera is all you really need to start vlogging on a budget! btw Yi is killing GoPro right now.
Amazon has the Go Pro Hero 5 Black for $349. Best Buy will do a price match if you want it now ( just bought a Go Pro at Best Buy and they did price match). As good as the Yi 4K+ is right now, because the Go Pro doesn't need an extra waterproof case and has better audio, I would go with the Go Pro right now while it's on sale.

Nice review... 😁😁😁 Quick question, is the yi 4k plus, is still a good investment for 2018? To upscale my video footage for my channel? Coz right now i am only using my vivo v3 phone. Looking for upgrade that not so expensive.
Great review, I just wondered if you had any tips on how you get the camera to connect to the app on a one plus 5 phone? Have updated the firmware and it connects fine to my iPhone 5s but just haven't managed to have any joy with my one plus 5... either with the Yi action app or the yi pro app.
What kind of external microphone will you recommend me for the YI 4K+ to record out doors(recording museum, parks, city streets, paredes, etc) recording so I don't have to do voice-over? Thank you keep up the good work 💪🏽
Thanks for this amazing review. Yeah as @idrinkforbadges said the mic has to be from our official YI Technology as we have the unique data processing unit :)) and for any of you guys have any questions about YI Action Cameras just leave comment here and I can answer :)

AWESOME video. I almost bought the YI 4k camera until I saw one of your videos mentioning that a new camera was going to be released. I'll be picking one up. Thanks a lot Sean. 👌
Awesome - happy to help. Let me know how it works out!
i bought the + ,but after the review i feel i would have been better off with 2 of the yi 4k's ! waiting for the shipment to arrive
Great review as usual! I would love to get one of these for my vlogs. I really want to start filming my bicycle commute to work.
This would be amazing for that!
THiNK Media TV looks like it's not available on amazon.ca yet though...well, time to save up I guess!

Nice - the Yi 4K is the BEST-ALL-AROUND in my opinion considering price / features / etc.
$199 or cheaper such a good deal!
Thank you for the review. I’m binge watching your videos ! And have found the world of tech pretty awesome so far.
Just got the Yi 4K+ on Amazon lightning sale for $220.
Can't wait for it to come in and try it out.
Just curious as to the onboard audio with this camera vs GoPro etc. Would like to use this when out and about on the trails etc, but don't really want to drag along an external mic if not needed.
I appreciate this video so much! Thanks for the detailed review, I'm in the market for one of these :)

Hi Sean, I would like to ask you how do you upscale from 2.7K to 4K ? thank you.
Video Editing Software!
great review I am going to buy the Plus
Awesome - happy to help - keep crushing it Bert!
Nice review! Good looking camera

Awesome Video Sean! :)

Kay Hong you're welcome - glad it was helpful!
Ordered one from aliexepress today. Got the camera, selfie stick, 3extra batteries , headstrap, waterproof case. For everything I paid 248 Eur
Great review 👍

Can it be used with an external battery pack connected to the USB C port while it's being used?
is the Yi 4K+ better than the SJCAM SJ7? There is oer 200$ CAD difference between the two but they seem quite similar in specs
Plz Suggest i wana buy this for music video, my idea is to shoot in 4k and to remove the fish eye/ lens distortion in premier pro editing. Will it be good enough like other dslr camera
Great review as usual!
Thanks!
Yi is bringing out a new gimbal for the 4K with a 3.5mm mic input and cold shoe. Sounds like the ideal vlogging rig in all but very low light. No info on date yet though.
YES! Excited to check it out!
Thank you! This was really helpful.
I really love your channel
thanks!
What are your settings because my yi 4k+ seems to have some blurring in the background roughly in the 10-20 yards at 4k60fps and it is not nice at all. Edit December 8th, 2018, the camera had a defect and has been replaced since. Everything is perfect now.
Nice review Sean. So it seems to use the gopro mounts correct?
You need the waterproof case that comes with it... but then yes... you could use that with car mounts, body, head, etc. from gopro.
Sometimes is a little tight "fit-wise" - but I've always got it to work with my gopro or generic accessories.
Nice thanks Sean! I'm sold, ditching my gopro and switching to Yi!
exactly, and it's annoying lol
I love Yi :-)
THiNK Media TV I still want to try Go Pro. I want a waterproof camera that doesnt need s case. Plus I like the look of their app. Also I want to buy the camera from Best Buy so I can get their warranty
What's your final thought on this action cam vs the GoPro hero 5? What about Sony action cams?
I share my thoughts on that in the last few minutes of this video. I need to test Sony action cams... so can't say.
THiNK Media TV yeah I saw that lol I wrote the comment half way through the video 😂 next time I'll finish the video before asking a question lol
hello! I think for my needs 2.7k 60 fps narrow (normal not fish eye)view would be ok
is there a camera cheaper then yi 4k that does this?
Just purchased my Yi 4k Plus over the weekend. I used your video review for my determination. I do some amateur photography, and I run a lot of races and obstacle courses so this should do well. I got mine for $329.00. I'm looking for a gimbal that works for my phone and Yi, but so far... no dice. Any suggestions?
I bought the Yi 4k+ and it only shows up to 4k 30fps, how are you getting this 60fps option?
Sean ! What video camera do you suggest. First timer. with external mike. To start filming video's
realy informative. which after market battery compattible with Yi 4k+? both cameras same or different type of battery
Love this camera! Yes.📸
very cool thanks for the video.
You're welcome!
Hello Sean, another great video. Could you do a video on best equipment needed and best set up to make unboxing/review videos please? A video where the reviewer is behind the camera ideally using a smart phone? Thanks
Great review! Would you also recommend Yi 4K for diving? I wouldn't want to spend too much on one as I only dive probably once a month...
I love my Yi4k. I use it more than my Hero 5. Looking forward to getting the Yi4k+ so I can use an external mic. Hopefully, they release the Yi Gimbal 2 soon.
Great feedback James!

Can you take the gimbal in the snow?
Is that really just an indicator light on the front that will effect the video at night or does it double as a flash for pictures? Can it be turned off in the settings? Great video.
Can I use yi selfie stick under water?
You forgot to tell us how long the battery lasts, at say ~ 4k at 30fps? Also, why so much sun glare?
Todd P. 2 hours battery life

sometimes hero 5 black goes on sale here in kuwait for around $270
Wow - that is a good deal!
at alghanim xcite?
Great Channel!
Just bought this on amazon prime day for $270. Not a bad deal, eh? You can also get the 4k standard white version for $140, which I was almost tempted to buy instead just cause that's such a great deal.
Please answer my questionn
I have just buy a yi 4k+ camera, i using sd card class 10 16Gb, but when i record video, my video divided into multiple clips when I recording. Every clips about 1 minute or less.
So, how can record video with video length 1hour or better.
Thany you so much
Mr. Khuyên that camera has a recomended sd card, don't try to change from that recomend, it make error to yours
What i must buy? With look prize,, 4k+ worth it or not? Or better i buy 4k ?? Or SJ6legend ??? I need your help.. Please.. Thx
is there any way of easily removing the usb c cover??
I find i need to use a knife since my nails arent able to lift it
I heard one review which said that the usb cover would fly open by it self. But, I think that Yi has fixed that problem because my new yi + does not have that problem. hi Sean... did you use ND filters for your Yi4k+ vids?
Hi does this action cam has a micro HDMI port?
Would it be okay to use for regular RUclips videos? (Tutorials, broadcasts, ect)
does the EIS work well for the camera if you don't have a gimble?
I need to do more tests... I've used it a lot on the Yi 4K (not "+") and it's good. But keep in mind... it won't come close to producing the kind of footage a gimbal does.
Great Review!!! Thanks for making this video :)
You're welcome!
Is that bluetooth selfie stick waterproof?
Thanks, you are my hero
Hi Think Media, i have a question on this camera. Is the firmware able to handle syncing at the moment ? On the Yi 4k you can sync several cameras using a syncing cable, but is this camera able to do so ? Is it supported by the firmware ?
Is bro. Is yi 5 is coming?
Nice review. Hi, can you do a video and photo comparison between yi4k and 4k plus? Thank you.
Thanks!
Solid point - that would be a great vlogging setup!
Can you use the zhiyun smooth q 3-axis with the yi 4k +
Great review. I think I'm going to go with the original Yi 4K. I don't see enough differences to justify such a jump in price.
Do a VS. video with the Thieye asap
Do you recommend this over the Go Pro Hero 5 Black Edition?
Check out the last few minutes of this video... depends on what you need/want features-wise.
Quick question, is the yi 4k plus, is still a good investment for 2018? To upscale my video footage for my channel? Coz right now i am only using my vivo v3 phone. Looking for upgrade that not so expensive.
Yes! It's great for action video, but for sit down video, you can still use your phone
Think Media ok, tnx. 😁😁😁
hi bro i need help wich one best slomotion shoot ..yi 4k plus and 4k lite best plz tell me
does go pro accessory work with it
Great review, I just wondered if you had any tips on how you get the camera to connect to the app on a one plus 5 phone? Have updated the firmware and it connects fine to my iPhone 5s but just haven't managed to have any joy with my one plus 5... either with the Yi action app or the yi pro app.
Do Yi 4k+ have 720p 240fps resolution?
DK Bros pics yep
It's okay to buy it this 2019?
Do you think yi 4k+ plus gimbal will survive snowboarding?
What kind of external microphone will you recommend me for the YI 4K+ to record out doors(recording museum, parks, city streets, paredes, etc) recording so I don't have to do voice-over?
Thank you keep up the good work 💪🏽
