Firstly, I'm a massive Blackmore fan. I have to say Steve Morse is without doubt one of the most lovely, humble, genuine human beings you could ever meet. A true musician that has time for anybody. The Kansas albums he did are superb!!!!
Met Steve after a Deep Purple performance when I was 14 years old. He was standing off to the side of the stage signing autographs for people who at the time had no idea who he was. Steve just kind of had his head down and was going through the motions. I was a huge fan and got a little nervous telling him how he was such a big influence on me as an aspiring guitar player. He looked up, put his hand on my shoulder, put on a big smile and said "Wow thanks man! That really means a lot!" I kind of blacked out from the excitement of being spoken to by one of my idols. I just remember him patting me on the back while I kind of stuttered something before shaking his hand and running away in an elated daze.
+Guitar5986 It may sound silly (or it may not), you you can almost tell he's a nice guy from his playing. It just has this tasteful 'friendly' sound to it.
Steve's a very rare-breed; multi-talented but ego-free. He's always got time for people and the light never seems to stop shining through him. A role-model on so many levels. And he's created a Swiss army-knife of a guitar that covers everything. Tessa's a really good interviewer too, she let's him talk freely without constantly interrupting like many interviewers.
I wouldn't say that Steve always has time for people. I've observed him before and he avoids distractions to focus on things that matter. So no, he does not have a minute for anybody about anything.

Steve just gets it. He gets his place in the mix. He gets guitar tones. He gets how to use amps. Its always refreshing to see these "dumb, long-hair, hippy, rock stars" speak so intelligently about their craft. He's a guitar genius. Anyone who can stay in this industry as long as he has deserves all the success he has.

+kurt57b Its not really fair to blame Ritchie Blackmore entirely for the problems Deep Purple had when he was in the band. I know he's a perfectionist and can be a bit of a control freak but Ian Gillan has said that he played his part in causing some of the issues due to his apparent partying\drinking lifestyle at the time. Thankfully they've both mellowed a bit in their old age :)

Steve is so good and kind. Just a great player and person all-round
He can cop the Eric Johnson stuff, but he has miles of his own stuff. Eric is amazing for his voice on the guitar, but Steve is more of a chameleon that at the same time always sounds like himself. And that's not even mentioning Steve's classical guitar compositions which Eric doesn't really aim for, as a composer.
Yeah He REALLY is - just the nicest guy . . . not to mention an awesome guitarist/composer. I've met him a couple of times at clinics back in the 80's . . .

I met Steve Morse once in the mid 90s when he was with the Dixie Dregs and man he is one of the nicest guy I ever met. I remember before playing the first song he was having a technical problem with his amps and while his tech was working on the problem he was telling some jokes to the audience just to entertain us. That the kind of guy Steve is. He really kept his cool.
Saw listened & had a photo pass Beacon Theater 11/19. Waited with the die hard fans behind a velvet rope for the band to come out to the tour bus. He came over to sign, not me but I kinda belted out “My first ever CD was yours!” He turned, acknowledged me & smiled. All true he put out a solo instrumental album I think it was ‘82 or ‘83 my 1st Compact Disc

Studied at Stetson (DeLand, Fla) and met Steve several times. Yes, he is humble, nice, very smart (airplane pilot) and a BRILLIANT musician. Although already an unbelievable guitarist and composer , he was Influenced by Juan Mercadal (University of Miami). Everything about Steve's approach to music is transcendental to me. My father's favorite guitarist was Chet, my favorite guitarist has always been and will always be Mr. Morse. I also wanted to say that the young lady, did a great interview. You could tell Steve was impressed with her knowledge. Guitarists Rule. Peace
Excellent interview. The right questions and she knew what their audience wanted to hear. You could hear Steve get excited as he was able to talk in depth about his gear - especially since he helped design so much of it.
Steve is not only one of the finest rock/fusion guitarist ever, but one of the nicest people you could ever meet. I remember a gig Steve played in toronto ontario about 30 years ago playing in a three piece dreggs act. The power kept going on and off and he had to reprogram his rack each time with a big smile on his face. I was up against the stage right in front of him. I guess it was clear to him that I was a guitarist and a huge fan. In the middle of one of his amazing solos he gave me the most incredible, reassuring smile that somehow said "keep playing and you will be great". What a great guy with more modesty than possible for such an incredible musician. You totally rock Steve!!
I believe he's one of the most interesting and personable super star guitar players ever. I also believe one could learn a lot from this video. He's somewhat unique in that he's not only an awesome guitar player, but he really knows "Tech" as well. I can watch it over and over and learn one thing new after another. Fantastic Guy! As an older guy I appreciate where he's coming from with what hurts. So you find other ways of doing it. I also like the fact that he's not hell bent on shredding all the time which I find can get quite tiring. An awful lot of players seem to want to be the fastest but don't appreciate any melodic structure to their sound. Thank you to Steve Morse for you're Humble patience in explaining your kit. It was a pleasure to watch.
Met Steve on a first class flight about a hundred years ago across the Atlantic. He asked me for my name for free tickets to a London show. (Yeah. He'll remember, ...) Decided to check will call the night of the show. Fourth row center, Band Crew backstage passes. (I worked 12 years as a roadie for various bands. But, my new wife was amazed). Incredible person.
What an absolutely _great_ human being. Talent and work ethic simply off the charts. But oh so humble. A fine, fine person to say the least. The light shines so very very bright here
Awesome!!! Steve Morse is an American Icon, I met him in 2000 and he was such a gracious man.. It was at a small venue in Sauget, Illinois and he nailed everything he played, sounded just like the recordings.. Been a fan since the mid 80's and after meeting him I became a bigger fan because he's humble and appreciative to all his fans.. He covers a lot of musical territory and trying to pin him into a certain genre is impossible, he's beyond labeling and can't be placed on any one spot of the map, he is the map, truly unique.. He is a facsimile of times past while capturing the moment now and yet future inventiveness galore.. God Bless Steve Morse!!!
This guy is a scientist.... I feel so much sympathy when he talks about his gear with bright eyes, so proud to let people know what he created. I love this feeling, too, and it's a gift when you have it and what you do makes you happy. It's a pleasure to see him talk and, even more, play.
There's no doubt this is the most spontaneous, yet deep and thorough interview I've seen of Rig Rundown series. Very well-managed by Tessa and Steve was just brilliant giving us so many interesting tips. Bravo!!
Saw Steve Morse Band 2 years ago opening for Joe Satriani and his tone was SUPREME(and so was his playing)! I fell in love with the Engl sound and I had to go out and buy a Engl head.
@@saltyassassin Met him back in the SMB days, I don't remember his stature being an issue, one way or another. I was fairly star-struck at the time, Steve being tied as my favorite guitar player with Eric Johnson, so I might not have been paying attention. EVH, OTOH, was not tall.
Brilliant all round interview of Steve, as we're all fans. I was impressed as to his 1st guitar, and why he still uses it.... Good engineering gets it right once. Tessa's int. was great, let the Man talk.. no interruptions.. loved it.
Interesting. Good interview by a good interviewer. Steve Morse was nice to explain his complicated guitar wiring. It was slightly humorous to watch him run through something that he understands thoroughly but probably never has to put into words the average person can follow.
I have been a fan of this man and the Dixie Dregs since I first saw them perform Punk Sandwich on Don Kershners Rock Concert back in '79 or '80. You are a musical hero Mr. Morse. God Bless. This is an awesome PG interview and Rig Rundown! Big kudos to Tessa for her respect and style. Steve Morse is a gentleman and one of the finest guitar players ever. I love to see he keeps evolving his rig and refining his art. The explanation of his amps 3rd channel - 4 mid range voices is huge. This is the frequency range the electric guitar lives in.
Such a warm and nice person and im so lucky to get to see him play every night his sound is huge and his playing is fantastic even though i can see that his in pain sometimes because of his wrist problem but still he pours his heart out on every Purple show his one off a kind for sure the best!
AMAZING, so awesome to hear this stuff from a guy whose music shaped my brain when I was a kid. Whenever I'm trying out a guitar, first thing I play is the _Whole Lotta Love_ solo and next is _Ice Cakes_. And I don't think 2 weeks have gone by where I didn't whistle the guitar from _Take It Off The Top_ to myself. Genius.

I've met Morse, & he's just the nicest guy to talk to. He always comes across nervous on camera, so I think he's fundamentally a bit shy & humble. I've met Joe Satriani too, & he's just the same. Basically they're both 'music nerds' & would rather be playing than talking, but at least Morse is generous enough to explain his gear & make sense, unlike some other prima donnas!
I live in Orlando and met Steve Morse a couple of times. You cannot meet a nicer guy, who will answer any question you might have. He lives and breathes music. He has literally over thought every aspect of his tone and equipment. He is truly a musical genius.

I had the chance to see Deep Purple 2 times in Lisbon. Steve Morse is just one of the greatest guitarists and not only from his generation. It’s a joy to see him play. His charisma and great personality, let alone his playing, are one of the key ingredients on the great atmosphere that you can feel from the band on stage. Hats off!

I was at this show. It was the "Deep Purple Featuring Steve Morse" show. I used to see the Dixie Dregs in the 70s in Nashville every time they'd come to town and play The Exit/In. I remember the announcer at one show asking the crowd, "How many of you are guitar players?" 90% of the hands in the audience went up...they were there to see Steve.
Steve Morse-Guthrie Govan-Paul Gilbert: Guitar Players that I can spend my whole day listening to. You can feel their passion, knowledge and simple-guy attitude. Not to mention Goddly Guitar Players. Knowledge presented on really humble way. And about the girl, she was really good, IMO. Really respecfull and nice, knowing that Steve will be the one talking. Too tight? Who would in front of Steve? She will be more loose on future rig rundown, eventually becoming our new Rebecca. Great Work Primier Guitar. Kudos.

i remember his solo show in montreux (1979 or at least around that year) his first announcemnt was "if you`re playing alone you gotta use every trick in the book" and ,i guess, two years later in l.a. the dixie dregs live at the roxy, the bassplayer said at the beginning of the show "we gonna show you f..ed up west coasters what kinda music we`re doin home" and the roxy went bananas - one of the best shows i`ve seen in my life band AND crowdwise!!
At the risk of repeating others - one of the best rundowns I've seen. Interviewer and subject both first-class. Steve is a serious tone-hound. And to cap it all, that gorgeous swelling compositio at the end; sublime. 30 minutes felt like 10.

This woman is huge...Steve stands well over 6ft.....but don't worry Steve is safe she seems to like him otherwise if made upset, she would take his guitar...squeeze it until there was nothing but dust left and hand it back to him and say...her hot shot now let's see you play....sorry I couldn't resist...she is big but gorgeous....
Long time fan here. I saw him in a really small club in Australia, must have been late 90s. He was amazing. The gear he had was all crappy backline rental, and his "rack" was separated by matchboxes. Plus the FOH kept going down. What impressed me was his professionalism. Rather than throw a tantrum, he simply turned a foldback to the crowd and told a road story while the stressed out soundguy resurrected the the PA. The PA issues happened more than once and he did the same thing. Very impressive. Mind numbingly good player, and seemed like a really nice bloke.

As an older guy I appreciate where he's coming from with what hurts. So you find other ways of doing it. I also like the fact that he's not hell bent on shredding all the time which I find can get quite tiring. An awful lot of players seem to want to be the fastest but don't appreciate any melodic structure to their sound. Thank you to Steve Morse for you're Humble patience in explaining your kit. It was a pleasure to watch.
Met Steve on a first class flight about a hundred years ago across the Atlantic. He asked me for my name for free tickets to a London show. (Yeah. He'll remember, ...) Decided to check will call the night of the show. Fourth row center, Band Crew backstage passes. (I worked 12 years as a roadie for various bands. But, my new wife was amazed). Incredible person.
Morse is so insanely good at playing and composing. One of the best ever, and so humble. I own all of his recordings, which are all incredible.
What an absolutely _great_ human being. Talent and work ethic simply off the charts. But oh so humble. A fine, fine person to say the least. The light shines so very very bright here

Awesome!!! Steve Morse is an American Icon, I met him in 2000 and he was such a gracious man.. It was at a small venue in Sauget, Illinois and he nailed everything he played, sounded just like the recordings.. Been a fan since the mid 80's and after meeting him I became a bigger fan because he's humble and appreciative to all his fans.. He covers a lot of musical territory and trying to pin him into a certain genre is impossible, he's beyond labeling and can't be placed on any one spot of the map, he is the map, truly unique.. He is a facsimile of times past while capturing the moment now and yet future inventiveness galore.. God Bless Steve Morse!!!
This guy is a scientist.... I feel so much sympathy when he talks about his gear with bright eyes, so proud to let people know what he created. I love this feeling, too, and it's a gift when you have it and what you do makes you happy. It's a pleasure to see him talk and, even more, play.
Great interview. Steve seems to have more knowledge about guitars and gear more so than anyone that has ever been interviewed.

Saw Steve Morse Band 2 years ago opening for Joe Satriani and his tone was SUPREME(and so was his playing)! I fell in love with the Engl sound and I had to go out and buy a Engl head.
I would normally skip through these but this is engaging, super detailed.. Oh and Tessa is cool, even if she makes Steve look like a hobbit.

@@saltyassassin Met him back in the SMB days, I don't remember his stature being an issue, one way or another. I was fairly star-struck at the time, Steve being tied as my favorite guitar player with Eric Johnson, so I might not have been paying attention. EVH, OTOH, was not tall.

Brilliant all round interview of Steve, as we're all fans. I was impressed as to his 1st guitar, and why he still uses it.... Good engineering gets it right once. Tessa's int. was great, let the Man talk.. no interruptions.. loved it.

Interesting. Good interview by a good interviewer. Steve Morse was nice to explain his complicated guitar wiring. It was slightly humorous to watch him run through something that he understands thoroughly but probably never has to put into words the average person can follow.

This is an awesome PG interview and Rig Rundown! Big kudos to Tessa for her respect and style. Steve Morse is a gentleman and one of the finest guitar players ever. I love to see he keeps evolving his rig and refining his art. The explanation of his amps 3rd channel - 4 mid range voices is huge. This is the frequency range the electric guitar lives in.

Such a warm and nice person and im so lucky to get to see him play every night his sound is huge and his playing is fantastic even though i can see that his in pain sometimes because of his wrist problem but still he pours his heart out on every Purple show his one off a kind for sure the best!

I've met Morse, & he's just the nicest guy to talk to. He always comes across nervous on camera, so I think he's fundamentally a bit shy & humble. I've met Joe Satriani too, & he's just the same. Basically they're both 'music nerds' & would rather be playing than talking, but at least Morse is generous enough to explain his gear & make sense, unlike some other prima donnas!
I live in Orlando and met Steve Morse a couple of times. You cannot meet a nicer guy, who will answer any question you might have. He lives and breathes music. He has literally over thought every aspect of his tone and equipment. He is truly a musical genius.

The one song that stands out from Morse-era Kansas for me is Stand Beside Me. I feel he's a much better fit for Kansas than he is for Deep Purple.

I had the chance to see Deep Purple 2 times in Lisbon. Steve Morse is just one of the greatest guitarists and not only from his generation. It’s a joy to see him play. His charisma and great personality, let alone his playing, are one of the key ingredients on the great atmosphere that you can feel from the band on stage. Hats off!

I was at this show. It was the "Deep Purple Featuring Steve Morse" show. I used to see the Dixie Dregs in the 70s in Nashville every time they'd come to town and play The Exit/In. I remember the announcer at one show asking the crowd, "How many of you are guitar players?" 90% of the hands in the audience went up...they were there to see Steve.
Bill Wilson Steve asked that question in Dayton OH in the 80’s. Same result.
Steve Morse-Guthrie Govan-Paul Gilbert: Guitar Players that I can spend my whole day listening to. You can feel their passion, knowledge and simple-guy attitude. Not to mention Goddly Guitar Players. Knowledge presented on really humble way. And about the girl, she was really good, IMO. Really respecfull and nice, knowing that Steve will be the one talking. Too tight? Who would in front of Steve? i remember his solo show in montreux (1979 or at least around that year) his first announcemnt was "if you`re playing alone you gotta use every trick in the book"
and ,i guess, two years later in l.a. the dixie dregs live at the roxy,
the bassplayer said at the beginning of the show "we gonna show you f..ed up west coasters what kinda music we`re doin home" and the roxy went bananas - one of the best shows i`ve seen in my life band AND crowdwise!!
At the risk of repeating others - one of the best rundowns I've seen. Interviewer and subject both first-class. Steve is a serious tone-hound. And to cap it all, that gorgeous swelling compositio at the end; sublime. 30 minutes felt like 10.

Long time fan here. I saw him in a really small club in Australia, must have been late 90s. He was amazing. The gear he had was all crappy backline rental, and his "rack" was separated by matchboxes. Plus the FOH kept going down. What impressed me was his professionalism. Rather than throw a tantrum, he simply turned a foldback to the crowd and told a road story while the stressed out soundguy resurrected the the PA. The PA issues happened more than once and he did the same thing. Very impressive. Mind numbingly good player, and seemed like a really nice bloke.
