What shows Steve Morse to be a great musician here is how he doesn't blast out the other players with volume. He can be heard when he wants to and backs off when others are playing.
Would never have had the opportunity to hear this if not for RUclips..... brilliant stuff from all three......👌👏👍🥳🎄😍⛄🦫💰😎💪🎉🇺🇸🍩🎶🤩
Look up the Dixie Dregs. That was Steve's band for years. All monsters.
Thank you for sharing this. Steve Morse is one of the best guitarists!!
Got to see David G play with Stephane Grapelli (ex-Hot Club France w/Django Rheinhart) at the Paramount Theater in Seattle in 1980, with Rob in Anchorage (small club venue) in the early 80s along with Mike Marshall and Darol Anger. Good times!
Thanks for this!
You don't always get such great videography where they show those fretboard closeups. So beautiful!
Shows the versatility of the great Steve Morse and this is historical for all of the players.
They played '16.16' by David Grisman from his "Hot Dawg" album.
One of my favorites
Got to see Steve play several times solo/Steve Morse Band and with Kansas and the Dregs...always fantastic
Really beautiful! Special thanks to Merv. Years back I was lucky enough to have worked with Rob a couple of times at my studio in Hollywood, CA and I can say that he was a wonderful person with musical sensitivities & abilities that were (pardon the pun) literally off the charts. I miss him and I'm guessing that maybe you do too. One of the greats!
I would love to see Morse’s reaction to rewatching this.
Check out his Beato interview just released a few weeks ago.
Huge Steve fan! No idea this existed. What a treat
As a musician myself, I really appreciate this video clip. There were several guitarists, Phil Keaggy comes to mind, who had perfected the use of the volume knob to create “bowed” sounding lines. This was an excellent example! Thanks so much for posting this!!!
Keaggy also uses an E-bow for that sound as well.
Morse might be the only one I’ve seen us the tine pot with this technique (even on his current strats).
Roy Buchanan was the best i saw do this with volume.
@@sailorr4287 There is also Jeff Beck and Uli John Roth. Arguably you could add Eddie VanHalen (Cathedrals) and Yngwie Malmsteen (Echo Etude, although this one was never on an album).
Yeah, Glass Harp was a huge influence on me back in the late 60s/early 70s. The volume swell thing stood me in good use over the years.
My algorithm brought me here...
That was nuts 🤗
Right, after decades of ignoring about Morse, and years if avoiding Beato, i watched the interview the other day. Discussed with my unsuspecting dawg bris yesty, Googlegod gave me this.
Three great musicians and nice to hear Steve Morse playing clean.
Mr Wizzard has always had the ability to play “clean” or any other coloring needed. He worked hard at technique since he was a kid. I remember going over to his house when he was about 14 and he answer
Reed the door with guitar slung and continuously running arpeggio exercises and carrying on a conversation without interruption.
As a budding keyboard player, I went home and rededicated my time to practicing.
He’s played “clean” a lot. Just listen to High Tension Wires.
Friends, musicians don't come any more talented than these three! I've seen each of them live (with other ensembles) and the performances were absolutely mind-blowing! My sincere thanx for posting this great content. 👏🌞💙
I don't know what's weirder, this line-up of musicians or that they got booked on the Merv Griffin Show! I saw the Dregs live in the '70s - they played all kinds of genres and styles mixed together - so not a stretch for Steve with the "Dawg" and bassist!
You saw the “dixie” dregs if it was the 70’s. As did i. The best dregs records are the original dixie dregs records. No im not some kinda souths gonna do it again dude-just no reason to change the history of their name out political correctness. If anything, their name was a parody of dixie not a celebration of it. Just sayin…
@@jeremyversusjazz - strange, but I never even thought about their name! There is an absolutely awesome recent interview with Steve on Rick Beato’s channel.
@@philipatoz yes saw it!
Rob Wasserman was a force in his own right .... a grouping of greats.
Phenomenal trio. Fabulous tune.
That was fantastic! Rob Wasserman has been an inspiration of mine since I first heard him in the mid 80s (probably around the time this video first aired). Really tight playing from them all!
Been a double bassist for over 2 decades and wasn't really familiar with him beyond a name on ink before right now!
What a player!
that Jazz Chorus from Roland, so juicy sweet!!
This is considered as a cultural expperience to me. Outstanding purformence.
I know of all these guys on their own forever.. Nearly 40 years after this performance and it is my first time seeing/hearing them and it was incredible!👍👍
Wow is right! I never heard this as I was deployed to the eastern Med in 1985. Amazing that old Merc had such talent on his show. The sound really shines through my Klipsch Heresies. A joy to hear.
If you're a Steve Morse/Dixie Dregs fan, I highly recommend their California Screamin' live album.
Cool little number from this trio...that bass solo unexpectedly good!
I didn't read the title correctly and kept waiting for the Steely Dan to start lol....
This is insanely great!
This is fantastic! Steve Morse showing he is a quick study of Dawg Music, too. Ridiculous solos by all.
Great all round! Blistering mandolin solo!
Great musical genius, first time hearing this 👌 🤟what a sound😁💁
Dawg and Dreg playing on top of Water, Glorious 👏
Wow, what a discovery! I've never seen young Mr.Morse! He was great even back then!
R.I.P. Rob Wasserman
Loved him in Ratdog!
This is epic. Love Morse's playing. Incredible collaboration.
What a find! Thank you so much! Dixie Dregs fan from wayyyy back! Steve is amazing!
Great sound quality on this video!👍🏻
When I saw Steve at The Tralf in Buffalo, September 1st, 1984 he was playing the same guitar and he explained all about the setup.
Steve at his finest. The 3 of them complement each other brilliantly.
Great upload, love these old talk show live performances
You want me to just plug straight into that Jazz Chorus, huh? OK, that'll be fine...
I saw Wassermann play a show with Bob Weir in a small venue in NYC. That man could PLAY the bass!
Fantastic musical treat
I loved this 3 virtuosos.
Great video, great performance
Pre " Hot licks " Raw Steve would probably have loved to have used distortion on this to showcase his signature Tone on TV ./ .love the other two players too!
Great post!!! Thanks so much!
wish I'd bought that Monteleone A-style mandolin he offered me in 1987 at his shop in Islip, NY. Thanks for this.
lol, i thought they were gonna play, 'reelin' in the years.'
That is what I thought as well!
I had no idea Steve Morse played with these guys whom I of course know as Grateful Dead extended family. Small world!
why'd the dead never do anything nearly this involved..
THIS IS JUST FANTASTIC FOOTAGE... THIS TRACK THAT THEY PLAYING SEEMS TO BE EXTREMELY "PROGRESSIVE~ROCK" GENRE.. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS VIDEO.. THANK YOU FOR UPLOADING THIS VIDEO..
lol it's called Jazz my dude. I highly recommend it! If you are a prog fan who likes YES, check out Bruford--jazz/rock fusion quartet featuring Bill Bruford (drummer of YES).
more accurately called "Dawg" music, since David "Dawg" Grisman wrote that. :) That nickname of his has become a genre of its own, describing his blend of bluegrass, swing and jazz.
Dig around here on YT and you may find a video of Grisman playing this piece with his quartet plus jazz violin legend Stephane Grappelli.
@@CaptainTedStryker Bruford is awesome, but not much overlap here, beyond, people who like musicians would notice that Allan Holdsworth shames everyone
Fantastic footage thanks for sharing.
and oddly enough, 2 of those gentlemen played "dead" music quite often...
Missed this one. Great to show the world there are virtuoso players from the boomers
This is fantastic!! Love the whole concept
Thank you Reelin66!!!
brilliant playing ......ill bet Zappa was somewhere watching this
cool. i've heard grisman play this song with jerry garcia in the 1990s too. i dont know the title of the song offhand
another comment here clarified that it's "16:16"
...and written by Grisman.
thanks yes i figured that was the case @@aka.Mr.French
Thanks 👍😘🇸🇪
Can’t speak for most recent compilation, but he was curiously absent in 2012 as was Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Eric Johnson among many others
Wow, great stuff! I knew Steve and Rob Wasserman, but must confess I didn't know about David Grisman. I loved it! Reminds me of what Béla Fleck was doing around the same time (and after a quick research, I find out they even collaborated).
But I must say, if they ever make a movie about David Grisman, Jason Mantzoukas gets dibs on the title role. But he must learn to play the mandolin! None of that stunt crap.
This is wonderful!
I remember one time the Merv Griffin show had Ray Brown on base and Herb Ellis on guitar in the studio band. Five days a week
Dang, that bass was sounding like a flute!😍
Brilliant!
All masters at their chosen instruments. Not blown away by the piece they chose but did enjoy their skills. Ever tried to play a double bass? Holy cow. You need fingers of steel.
Steve on a Tele of all things. No sign of his Music Man
This is his Dixie Dregs guitar. The one he built himself with the strat neck on a tele body and all the different pickups. This was his main guitar for many years. The Music Mans didn't come until later.
Not yet
@@frankmarsh1159, Longtime Morse fans like myself call this the FrankenTele !
@@goodun2974 Yeah I know. I saw it many times. I actually have a set of frets that came out of it.
Check out the Steve Morse Band album ‘The Introduction’ (rel. 1984). His modified Tele playing won’t disappoint! 😊
Jim Crockett, President and Publisher of GPI Publications in the '70s and '80s (Guitar Player Magazine, Frets...) RIP ❤
what a crazy ensemble, love it
Fun fact: David Grisman is "share a toothbrush close" friends with every cool musician.
I can't believe I've never seen this before!
The one and only Steve Morse…
While I give him kudos for attempting it, there was a very good reason that MERV Griffin’s talk show did not last and that reason had nothing to do with his guests
This shit rocks never heard of this grouping of incredible musicians
Man, that is really great, thanks!
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 thanks for posting
This is wonderfull!!😊🌄
Wow, Steve Morse (Dixie Dregs, Deep Purple) seems like an unlikely fit for this trio, but it sounds nearly proggy! Great upload!
They're a way closer fit than you think! 🙂
Steve has played with so many greats and in so many styles it's dizzying. But he is still a Rocker above all.
@@redbarchetta8782 Very true!
Steve Morse was ..the founder..of the prog-Rock group..Dixie Dregs.Playing this type of jazz is his bread and buttter.
Steve can play any style of music.
I can hear the reason Steve went on to play with Paco, Al, and John. The mandolinist sounds very progressive flamenco.
On the Merv Griffin Show, for all love! Wow!
This is awesome
Well that was a nice surprise! Top drop!
Daytime TV in the 80's! Wow
Amazing! Reminds me of Holger Czukay - Persian Love Song
Amazing!!!
Wow!!!
This is great.
Awesome!
Cool! Haven’t heard Jim Crockett’s and GPI’s name in years.
That was awesome
Fantástico ❤
If Ravi was there it would be too much. My mind would explode.
Brilliant! Subscribed.
And Steve would be voted best the next 2 years joining them in the gallery of greats. A JC120 in the backline.
I've never seen that guitar before but looks like the same pickup config as his Musicman sig.
I came to hear Steve Morse but I was equally impressed if not more with the bass player playing so cleanly on a fretless bass and the mandolin was enjoyable too
Very nice
This is so jamming.
The most baffling thing about this video is that their audio guy didn't put a mic anywhere actually near a speaker in the JC120 that Steve is playing through. They put it in the middle, right between the speakers.
😂
It's a stereo amp and he's using the chorus. Maybe that's why?
@@mikelenox7999 I thought about that and it's certainly a possibility but you'd be better off pulling the mic away 12 in or so.
Great!
Steve was cool
Gris went with Jerry and Rob went with Bob to Ratdog
Few Merv Griffin average viewers had any idea that they were in the presence of Rock Arena greatness for guys used to blowing to 150dB for a square mile
Просто гениально!
