Hey Miranda, hope you are doing well. I need your advise here. I am truck dispatcher in a decent company with over 100 trucks in fleet but this week I was in a very bad situation. So to start with I knew I was going to have a dry van in Seattle WA this Monday and this company driver was supposed to be at home in Columbus OH for this weekend. So last Friday I had prebooked a load for him going to ID around 520 miles for $1200 which is pretty decent for WA I believe and plan was to take next load from ID in direction to OH. We got empty at around 12pm and right after that broker told me that the load to ID is canceled. I did my best but this driver had to sit there until Tuesday afternoon cause all the loads in direction to the midwest were paying less then $1.5 per mile and as you always say we should refuse those loads to not let this crazy market go down even more. I ended up taking a load on Tuesday at 4pm for 1,49 to IN cause at this situation it was the only way to get him somewhere in that direction. In conclusion I lost day and a half and took a very bad load trying to find a better option. What would you do instead?

I mean you did good man, get that driver back home. At those prices tho is definitely a loss when you factor in diesel and Tolls. Very unfortunate the times we living in. Some will say deadhead home to not contribute but hey in this situation the driver needed his home time and at least it covered the fuel and tolls spent to get there.

Wait until they implement speed limiters for trucks in May. 15% loss in productivity per truck. Wait until NJ start to require 1.5 million in liability insurance. 10-20% cost increase or lose 7 states of work. Wait until they switch everyone to W2 with workers comp insurance required at 8-15% from the drivers salary. If rates doesn't come up by june we will see 5000 carriers drop a week.

The market provided a place for alot of carriers to enter the flatbedarket. Flooding it with trucks. The decrease is those same carriers switching back to vans.
A good example is ART transport, they bought 8 flatbeds and stepdecks during high market. Helped milk it to where it is and have now shut down that fleet switching back to refer van because thats is where the money is currently.
Alot of carriers are doing this, and it is why every market will become level with each other none making more than the other.
But if you have 1 refer and 1 flatbed you can play both markets and switch when the rates are better in your area and just stay regional.

Van I would say- it's the most hassle free trailer and the cheapest to buy. BUT, the rates are also usually the lowest in the current market. If you are ok with taking on a bit more risk, go for reefer.
