This is spot on. Most drivers out there could make more money working a $20/hr job for 70 hours than being gone from home for 4-6 weeks at a time driving almost 70 a week plus all the hours spent "off duty" working.

When I was in driving school, the instructor warned us about truck driving being the only profession where less than half of those licensed actually make their living by driving a truck. A guy comes out of school get's screwed by the first couple companies he try, and then exits the industry....

If you rely on the spot market for your main source of revenue then your most likely operating at a loss
Whether or not there is a driver shortage is the wrong question. What matters is, whether the nation's shipper's loads are getting covered quickly enough so as to prevent an ever increasing backlog of loads needing to be hauled as the weeks go by? If not, then there's no driver shortage. In my 29 years of driving, the answer has always been no. 1995 or 1996 was the 1st time I read about "the driver shortage," in a now defunct magazine that was in truck stops back then, called "Trucker's News," which was owned by....drumroll....The American Trucking Association! Later, they sold it to NATSO, but continued publishing their propaganda in the Roadstar magazine, which I think, ceased publication about 10 years ago.

If they SAY there is a driver shortage, then the mega carriers can keep collecting gov. funds for training new drivers out of their schools and they get cheap rookies to drive for them.
Yes there is a shortage of willing Americans to give up their life to spend it all in a glorified camper alone, for less than minimum wage. ..... solution. Higher pay good benefits, stop all the middlemen from getting the driver's pay. .......or keep importing people and paying them $300 a week until you get robot trucks. So a few at the top can have all the wealth. Come on drivers shit them down!

When people are trying to ,do as little as possible to justify their paychecks, its always everyone else's fault.
Prior to 2021 ,I had no problem finding a good company and being a company driver ,since then whenever I reach 120 days , there's a problem I didn't ask for . I don't trust carriers anymore, I try to go over everything with a fine tooth comb . In 2021 ,(at age 50I I had 1,maybe 2 grey hairs in my face. 2023, and I almost look 60. It's not a driver shortage, its a People can't stop lieing shortage. Freight, shippers, greedy brokers carriers, social media . Im surprised anyone has any sanity left ..
Industry full of deception. Been that way as long as I can remember. Very few good companies out there.
This is matter of perspective. If you’re a garbage trucking company that turns over 150-200% of your drivers each year you may have a driver shortage. If you’re one of the huge companies that will not hire older drivers the pool may be smaller for you. If your company insists that a driver must have 3 years experience to apply for your company things may be a struggle. If you are a well run company that pays reasonably well and treats your employees like human beings you have zero problem attracting and retaining drivers. The vast majority of trucking companies have one thing in common. They are run by people that couldn’t tell the truth if you put a gun to their head. These companies want cheap labor. It’s in their benefit to say to the public that there’s a shortage so young people will enter the field. If they told the truth to the public nobody would get their CDL and we would have a shortage that would drive pay up again. A trucking company will spend $6k to advertise hire and onboard a new driver and they will not spend $6 to keep one. Please don’t say there’s a shortage….

One of biggest problem with trucking is because of the mega fleets. Taking cheap freight, dangerous drivers and having political power to influence government regulations. Mega fleets are a cancer to trucking.

There is no driver shortage. There is a pay shortage. UPS never has a retention problem. Companies that pay well don’t have a need to recruit drivers every month since their drivers are happy and stay there for a long time.
Unfortunately the union driving jobs are but a fraction of what they used to be and since the 70’s if you were a white male your “white privilege” (another myth) obviously didn’t exist as affirmative action hiring practices (that never seem to end) were bending over backwards to give those jobs solely to minorities and women.
The shortage is pay, benefits respect and parking.

Automatics are not the problem. I have been driving OTR 34 plus years 20 yrs as an O/O. I’ve had 18 speed manuals, 13 speed manuals and one 18 speed automatic. Don’t get me wrong automatics have a lot of drawbacks and in hindsight I would not have bought my last truck that had one even if it was with a nice ARI Legacy sleeper. The automatic doesn’t tear your hood off pulling out of a parking space, doesn’t tear up the side of your tractor backing into you trying to back up,the automatic doesn’t prevent you from being able to speak English and read and understand basic laws and signage. Automatics don’t camp out at a fuel island for hours while the driver showers, etc, automatics don’t pull out in front of you at an intersection when you’re approaching at 50 mph,automatics don’t tailgate you 5 feet or less off your ICC bumper at 70 mph, etc.
@@Prodigal1 _first off automatics is what got rid of the challenge and irresponsible people fear challenges. That’s why the most responsible always got into the trucking industry because they did not fear the challenge. Automatic trucks made it easy for everyone to get into trucking which Open the floodgates_
@@TacticalTrucker 😂😂 hardly the issue but nice try. Try driving at 3:30 pm on a weekday through Fort Wayne , Indiana before they built the bypass. Your calf would be the size of a beach ball by the time you made it through every stoplight on old US 30 (now SR 930). You’d be happy you had an automatic at least on that day. There’s a hell of a lot more to being a truck driver than shifting gears.

Yes, so let's all write to our Congressmen, excuse me, -persons, and insist that fuel-saving, automatic transmissions be un-invented. Make driving a truck artificially more difficult, so there will be fewer drivers. Yeah, that's the way! It is so great that there are people like you.
P.S., My low-quality CDL training through Roehl was 15 days in duration. More than half of this time was spent, uncomfortably, with other student drivers and a shared trainer and truck, STANDARD MANUAL TRANSMISSION. I handily passed the CDL test the first time. Bottom line, in addition to being unworkable, ridiculous, fuel- and money-wasting, it isn't even an effective way to cut down on the number of drivers.
With SAP law’s kicking in , many drivers will be sent home , that will help getting rid of some slackers that don’t take trucking serious!
I am a person that just give my resignation in March after 24 yrs with a certain company with a perfect safety record, you would think that I would be a pretty high priority to the company but NO,75 % of the company is immigrants that they pay substantially less for and I am nothing to them, saving money over safety, it's the way the whole industry is going, TRUCKING SHORTAGE, BULLSHIT!
Spot on Miranda. No shortage, never has been. Entrance requirements for new drivers and new carriers is pathetically low. It’s a flip of the coin who has done more damage to this industry, the ATA or the government!
A true driver ahortage , freight on the dock, and no one to pick it up.

Not qualifying a driver for mental stability and / or english proficiency.
The logic of starting out small. Panel van or pick up.
Then delivering in a straight truck.
Finally, driving a five axel. And finding the nich that moves you.
Buying your own equipment and meeting a customer's needs.
Larger companies sometimes are just looking for the lowest wage earner to match the low ball rate they got their contract and hold it.
Customers will remove a bad actor if the driver dosent respect themselves or anyone .
When a customer is saving so much that the product and / or equipment is harmed, we all lose.
Like you pointed out the trucking associations that are infulenced by big box trucking that profits by the low wage cdl holders.
Carriers that hire staff without critical thinking skills.
A drivers shortage would mean docks and freight overflowing at wharehouses. Not the case..

There is absolutely no shortage of drivers right now. I put an add up to hire two local drivers and by the end of the day I had like 300 responses… no joke.
Last week I went into the commercial DMV where it’s usually dead and slow but it was packed with people trying to get their license and trucks lined up outside to take the test.
The market is flooded right now and unfortunately it just means that pay is going to decrease for drivers, at least here in so cal.
Where did you advertise to hire? We tried on Indeed and weren’t getting real people responding.
@@EmpoweredtoLove I know it’s a pain but put an add on Craig’s list if indeed isn’t fruitful. We advertise on multiple platforms but people like Craig’s list because it gives them a phone number that they can call and talk to someone directly. Indeed only allows them to communicate through Email. I have found the best hires are the ones who are motivated to jump on the job immediately. Now we are all local work and hourly pay so I get huge responses when I put an add up. This could be the reason why I get so many responses.

You can’t even find a parking spot out here no more the own ramps and all ramps are full. Don’t even get me about the rest areas and truckstops that’s a no go zone.😎💯🚛
I got out of OTR back in 2001 and drove tankers locally and I got out of tankers back in 2006 and currently working for another form of commerce transportation ever since 2006, I still retained my CDL A with endorsements.
Well, the industry is definitely one driver short. I refuse to be away from my family; pay extremely high food/goods prices for on-road necessities; compromise my health and safety.....just to barely make a net profit each month. That's on the OTR side. Locally, companies in Florida are paying $15-$25 for fully endorsed; highly experienced drivers! They expect 12-15 hour workdays; 6 days per week!! WAIT.....WHAT?!?!? For $15-$25 per hour???? What other licensed profession is expected to do so much for so little pay??? SAMS, Walmart, Target, fast food chains(non-driving positions).....all which require no license; yet, make similar, if not more, in hourly wages. Yet, we're "professional drivers" right?? Please!
I have almost 2 million miles in Class 8 equipment pulling all manner of trailers. Now retired. There is a shortage of COMPETENT DRIVERS. The days of skilled drivers that knew there equipment and how to deal with mechanical issues are over. I stay way clear of any trucks these days. I see unprofessional conduct behind the wheel on a regular basis.
New drivers ($5000) a student) x 20 new drivers a week per training = 100,000 a week hiring new cdl drivers x 52 weeks in a year... per company/carrier... made a bundle of money... equals mass amount of drivers 2020 to 2023.... the whole while crying driver shortage
Drivers need to treat brokers and shippers like there is a driver shortage and demand money. No more cheap rates!! 😤
Why would you be surprised. Anyone in trucking knows that is & has never been true. What they do is churn drivers using them to drive for less than $.40 per mile. They leave and another guy comes along and so it goes.

I completely agree with your content. I have known this for a few years. Also, though, one other piece of the puzzle that has been proposed is that the mega-carriers are using this issue to control driver pay somehow, and thus, increase corporate profits. 🤔
Not all drivers are created equally. The shortage is with high quality drivers that take pride in their work and have a high aptitude for the job.

100 more fill the seats.

I've been driving 23 years. Every year, the government tells the same lie, down to the exact same number of needed drivers.
I’ve been trucking for almost 3 years same company. Regional driver out of Dallas never been late always done things right. My check is 1000 a week after taxes. Waiting my turn for something better hope all is well out there God bless.
Good companies have no driver shortages. It would be nice if drivers we payed properly and were treated as a team player. Be safe out there every day

😂actually auto trans has nothing to do with it. Our country’s been bringing in Euros and other foreigners for years with little to no training or proficiency requirements to fill the mythical driver shortage. It’s too easy for people to enter this profession both as a new driver and new operating authority with standards practically non existent. Spot on Miranda. Blame the insurance companies for the " drivers shortage ". I had unfortunately 2 accidents in 2022, none of them were my fault, but just because I ended up rear-ending, automatically I was at fault, now no one wants to hire me, after 13 or 14 years of a clean record, no violations, nothing.

It doesn't matter what transmission you have in the truck if you are hate being away from your family and friends. It takes a certain kind of person to be happy to be alone. And now with the cameras and with the gadgets they are moving in to the truck with you and drive away the introverted people too...

To anyone that says we have a driver shortage then ask them what a “shortage” is? They will obviously say not enough drivers to fill all the jobs, right. Then ask them if you offered 1 million dollars do you think these companies cannot fill every position? The obvious answer is yes. So it’s not a driver shortage but a pay/compensation issue. These companies do not want OR they can’t afford to pay what it takes to make the job attractive. Not only that, they don’t realize how badly drivers are treated, from using bathrooms, finding parking, uncomfortable living spaces, I can go on and on. Even the one real perk is disappearing, that is freedom, since we now have GEO tracking, inside cameras, and the government mandating more regulation. Lastly, let add in the dangerous nature of our job and the legal risks.

Mega carriers turned trucking into one big temp agency it doesn't benefit them to retain drivers. They all have drivers with 15 to 20 plus years experience just not with them most won't last 1 year all by design.
I just got my unrestricted class a license last week I literally saw half a dozen of people testing that day at my appointment time so clearly there's enough of folks out there.. Definitely not going OTR only local for me
True I would be out 3 months and every company I worked for lies and makes up so much. Then if you say something they it goes against you and if you quit it makes you look bad . Because most companies lie . I can go back to most companies but why when there only for there on even if working harder then most. Even though I was a good worker it's either office scams or management. I loved it till know and I run hard . Know jumping job to job not good.
There’s a driver shortage in terms of big carriers because they need drivers with Klien records to be able to afford their insurance rates which they get when they self insure. It’s not a shortage in terms of numbers. It’s a shortage in terms of getting on self insured insurance policies requires drivers with clean recordsthat you run a truck driving school and for a year and a half the driver maintains a fairly clean record
If they really are short 160k drivers it doesn’t make sense to downgrade 168k drivers Nov. 18th. I think they’re trying to push autonomous vehicles. But I like your explanation better 😁

Many years ago a mega carrier had a quarterly driver turnover of 125%. There isn’t a shortage of drivers, there is a shortage of drivers that will work for certain carriers.
Driver shortage for company jobs. But Driver Excess in Owner Operator industry. Whcih most of those who left their company jobs found out quickly. Oh yeah you make more money. But after you pay for everything. You right back to where that company job paid you except now you have all the stress and worry and problems you didnt have. I understand wanting better pay and benefits. But the logic of that being a owner operator solves all problems that modern day truckers grew to have blows my mind. 🤦🏾♂️really just most want to do their own thing cause they can’t either follow rules, refuse too, or just have over inflated egos. Cause if you look at the majority of the owner operators now. 😑they truly are terrible truckers.
I’m an independent O/O, by God’s grace I have made it this far while being profitable, but throughout this rough time I’ve had this thought in my mind, how cool will it be to have Miranda as a boss, she’s awesome.
Well 160,000 drivers who have ever fail a drug or alcohol test will lose their jobs in November. We will still have a surplus after that.
Always follow the money. 🙂 The ATA is not a friend to truckers, they're a friend to money. If they had their way, we'd see a massive influx of drivers which would force down driver rates and improve the bottom line of the big companies they lobby for.

Normally I would be like - "Copy Cat!" - LOL But Oddly enough, I am not. Contrary to that, I am like - hell yeah - Go get um Girl. You have basically said the same thing that I have on my content a few times. For Clarity, I have (3) Channels. All (3) are Truckin Channels, and I have had a major Bad taste in my mouth for The ATA for the reasons you sited. For an outfit who's sole responsibility is the defense and characteristic of the Members Only - I can't agree with a damn thing that comes out of their arsenal.

The ATA doesn’t exist for the average driver. As mentioned, they are the mega carriers lobby group.
When I first got my class A in 1989, & the years following. I was astounded at how badly companies treated drivers.
Funny thing is, I badly wanted to drive OTR, but was constantly rejected because I was younger than 25. Because insurance they said.
Now look at all the young inexperienced ( foreign) drivers.
The large carriers simply want to pay .35-40 per mile for eternity so they can become richer than they are now. They want to run owner operators out of business with over regulation, HOS rules and newer truck requirements for emissions. The ATA “DOES NOT” represent the MAJORITY of Owner Operators with their babbling BS of a “DRIVER SHORTAGE. They do not want to pay their drivers what they should be paid or provide the benefits they deserve. Period.

Where have you had the most success recruiting drivers? We paid $50 a day on Indeed and I think the only responses were from bots. We see are a small mom and pop and can’t afford $2k a month to be scammed. Thanks!!

No shortage of bad drivers and with the medical requirements for blood pressure that are designed to keep skilled drivers off the road so companies can keep wages low, can’t wait to retire in 6 months

If you have a clean record and you don’t self ensure you’re looking at insurance rates that are like $19,300 for the year if you qualify to get on somebody’s policy that self-insure the insurance carrier will pay half that
Most of these big fleet operators are over trucked and under freighted.
Go to any truck stop by 5pm and you’ll see there’s no truck driver shortage
A truck driver isn't just a truck driver. We have feelings too and like to do different things. I am certain there are shortages in certain fields of trucking and demographics.
Not to be hateful or offend anyone but if an industry is greatly effected by an excessive amount of (foreign) workers that causes lower pay and rates then sorry those work visas should be ended until that industry recovers.

They are absolutely correct. There is indeed a driver shortage problem. No brainer.
It's above most of our understanding of finance. But just like the Banking industry. Anything they can create to generate more bank deposits, keeps the economy "inflated".
Example: Colleges. Put up new schools anywhere, get as many people to enroll, then deposit the student loan money and grants.
Same with drivers. The more drivers to assign, the more rate confirmations available to grab at. It's never been about the freight. There's so many ways to generate profit from drivers other than freight. The problem is in order to work, driver enrollment must continue to increase. They're running out of drivers. Now they're going to younger pool of drivers. The industry focus financially is arbitrage, not hauling freight.
The mega carriers are looking to fill their seats with new inexperienced drivers that don't know any better.

I think there is over expectations and myths and antient stories about truck driver profession. People were lied by bloggers talked into choosing truck driver profession and then realize there is no that kind of money they were expecting to earn driving trucks instead of that they have to live in trucks not coming home months and small pay checks and hard work driving many hours per shift. Stop the lies??? In Trucking??? IMPOSSIBLE. lol Its not about driver shortages as much as the driver workforce being transformed to a third world workforce. I have seen this over the last 10yrs. I think the different driver rally's scared them as well, and even though they were weak, they knew if the drivers ever really got organized it wouldn't take all of them, just enough, and they would have muscle to flex. No way in hell the "people" are getting that power anymore, so just ramp up the third world workforce replacement and problem solved. Its what my eyes see out here. Thx for the vid.
Yeah, its stupid that rates are made around the people who don't spend inside the country mostly but ship their revenue to homeland overseas
@@fkutw4tt3rtub3 Well the rates, all they have to do is keep the trucks/drivers over saturated for the amount of freight needing to be moved and they can keep the rates low. They will only come up if, there is an actual shortage of trucks to move it, and its easy to make that not happen with a third world workforce replacement.

this could also be applied to uber drivers and other services where contractors use their own equipment
you could say that the market is oversaturated with carriers right now but that shouldn't be the reason to pay below the level of sustainability
yet we see everyday that there are loads being posted(and moved) that barely cover the fuel/tolls/food expenses drivers are making just to get the job done
that should be covered by default, people do work to make a living, but right now it looks more like a lottery where you pick out of shitty paying jobs and hope you don't have to find out that you actually PAID of your pocket to do the job, lol
those who stay afloat in this market are basically cutting their expenses by hiring cheaper drivers, cutting on maintenance letting their equipment wear off, etc
it will bite back eventually, the quality of service provided is dropping causing more mess in the industry
it's also funny how there are billions of regulations for the drivers and almost none for shippers&brokers
imagine something like this was happening to let's say aircraft manufacturing, too many companies, oversaturated market, everyone is cutting their production expenses and the customer gets the cheapest option, everyone is happy till the first accident and service failure, lol

Yes it is the reason, because brokers are a third party middleman and give a squat about any companies sustainability. Also I said driver/trucks, not carriers, there is a difference. Don't no how old you are but I have seen this happen in the Construction industry as well in the past 20yrs, with the same methods, replacement of workforce with a majority of a third world country workforce. See they will ride out the economic downturns and work for less because its still more then they ever knew. This allows ANY industry involving a bidding process to get run under by a constant flow of low balls regardless if they even do go out of business. So your last "lol" paragraph is irrelevant to my post or any fields requiring high skills, high education, or no bidding process ONLY based around finding the lowest bidder, regardless of what you get for your money.

I get the difference
most carriers and especially the big ones are middlemen just as brokers, factoring companies, insurance providers, etc
they all milk the guy who is either dumb enough to run his own or leased truck or coming from another country to work for pennies, live in the truck and send what he earned back home
I also get it that nobody who's biding even cares for anything outside making profit for himself, I'm just trying to say that this is very unhealthy for economy overall
funny though that there is no solution for this either
both unions and regulations proved to be long term ineffective
cheaper money could give a quick fix if people started buying more stuff if not for covid inflation

I partially disagree about some jobs requiring high skills and education though, these jobs would've been more accessible if the said education wasn't hidden behind the absurd paywalls, there are a lot of capable people who were never given a chance
