I like the ideas near the end. Powerful man shows dominance by having powerful pet. Big man shows big grief at the death of a pet who occupied a position closer to him than humans could. The solitude of both grief and the position of power here.

Jean Leon Gerome is one of my favorite painters. Probably my favorite. I have Caesar & Cleopatra and Phryne Before the Areopagus both on the wall in my apartment.

the vast empty space, void of life, like a cavity within the pasha's soul.

I've loved this painting for years now. The receding, atmospheric background offers such a contrast to the foreground scene.

No pun intended but for me, the high ceiling (implied by the tall columns) adds a particular depth both literally and figuratively. This emotion of loss is situated in this big open space instead of somewhere closely confined. I would say that this changes the way the sultan figure must be experiencing his emotions. There must be an audible echoing silence. The air must be cleaner. As a human being, being in a big box like this makes things even more intense. The space itself is an aspect of the sultan’s experience. And for me this is why I can really feel the scene. It’s existential. Hopeless. Humbling. Humbling I think is what I see most. Even with all these riches, the sultan is still a slave to the unsympathetic forces governing human existence: life, death, and everything in between. Though this is beautiful, it is also incredibly absurd, but in this world, in this life, what isn’t absurd?
Thanks so much for sharing this piece. 🥳

Oh right on! You’re so right, the size of the space does set the vibe and support the narrative. Great point

Thank you, I appreciate that. It was my first cat and he’d been with me for all of my adult life so when I saw the pasha painting again recently it did have a different feel to it. Where as before I loved it for its aesthetic quality and story now I realized I could relate 😿

@@arthistorystorytime sorry, but had to chuckle when you said he could just buy another. Timmy the dog met his end in "five go mad in dorset" (parody of Enid Blyton's Famous 5) and one of them comments "don't worry , we'll get another".

( sigh) You’ve said it all and I’m learning art appreciation from you, so I’ve liked and subscribed…
I’ve four technical degrees in science and engineering and dabble in art. You seem adept at music, too, judging from your other videos.
Yes, untamed nature skillfully portrayed and juxtaposed with civilized feelings…

Thank you! Glad you’re getting something out of it. Other than playing around with DJing I’m not too musically inclined. Have tried to learn the guitar but never stuck with it.
