Your wonder is an interesting one, (Hieronymus Bosch possibly being high off of drugs during his creativity).
Being that he had an extensive Artistic background & had a deep connection with family members being artists, I would think that his abilities to use conventional practices with imaginative visuals were a natural reaction to his own style.
Picasso came from an Art family & was taught the traditional way to paint & when we look at his paintings during his adult years, he strayed as far as possible from the traditional mandates (when it came to visual techniques) of what painting is supposed to be all about.
Hieronymus Bosch might have had that same advancement being raised with a steep education in the Arts while at the same time, visually seeing a conduit that was out of the norm; especially when he was alive, where his paintings were opposite of his traditional potential.
If he wasn't high off of drugs, he could have been drug-free & high off of his independence by not painting what was popularly traditional.
I saw that painting in Bruges in the Flemish gallery. The condition of the painting for its age is amazing. Given the technical considerations of painting at the time, there is no way he was high when he painted it-when I was taking LSD as a youngster, I could barely construct coherent sentences let alone paint and I had paint in tubes! Whether psychedelic experience informed the imagery, we have no clue, but at the point of painting he had to have been very focused.

I was thrilled to get to see the triptych of The garden of Earthly Delights at the Prado in the early 2000’s. I had been drawn to it because of the Robin Williams film “What Dreams May Come,” which has several scenes that look like Bosch paintings come to life. Fabulous and fascinating paintings.

I saw The Garden of Earthly Delights this summer when I was in Budapest. I did not know the artist, but I discovered my new favorite aesthetic: medieval psychedelic.

@@arthistorystorytime I was intrigued by the composition, then I got sucked in by the detail and minutiae.
I was young and really had no idea about ergotisim or the heavy influence of the church on art in the late 15th C.
The fantastic beasts and tortured souls seemed to me like a _more mature_ Maurice Sendak illustration.

Speaking of hyperrealism, are you familiar with the Pre-Raphaelites Brotherhood?
Ever since I discovered Maxfield Parrish, the famed American Illustrator, I was quite impressed by the luminous quality of the Pre-Raphaelites.
Salvador Dalí, at least in some of his religious paintings, is believed to have employed the same technique as evinced in the meticulously detailed paintings of the Pre-Raphaelites.
THEY might not have been tripping, but Bosch&Escher were my 2 fav artists back in the late 60s, when I WAS, a lot!
And yes, there was a lot of "butt stuff" in B's work... What is THAT about?!? 🤔
Not sure but I think that deserves it's own historical/academic exploration and video to document the findings. Thanks for the new video idea! 😁

Why do I feel like I have seen his work before?
as someone who lives in 's-Hertogenbosch, all the locals and most Dutch will just call it Den Bosch (pronounce more like: Den Bos). The full name is more like sss-Her-Tog-En-Bos, meaning the forest of the duke. And to me as someone who often talks about his artwork, I always side on everything having religious meaning. It is a darn shame that 1) the city only has 2 of his sketches....maybe (as he didn't sign anything) 2) when his paintings were all in the city for two weeks, I missed as I wasn't living there at the time. 3) the city doesn't do much to promote itself to an international audience. So even the Heironymus Bosch tours (little boat tours the visit statues that are modern reproductions of what are seen in his paintings) are all in Dutch.

Maybe he was very creative and inventive and didn't need to be "tripping" to come up with these fantastic images. It's not like other artists in Bosch's time didn't produce similar works.
