Hanging out with people and this song came on, back in the day, we would stop talking and just listen or mouth the words. NOW I KNOW WHY. Everyone "curled up" into the song's melancholy in their minds but we never talked about that to each other. We all just knew because the music made us feel the same way... I love how you said what you said.

This was the first Tool song I ever heard. It was 25 years ago, but I remember it like it was yesterday. I was 21, in the back seat of a car full of my buddies on the way to the club. It was cranked deafeningly loud right in my ear. And I loved every second of it.

The whole album is sensational. Tool fan for almost 30 years. So far ahead of its time.
Let's all be honest - Tool songs are SO DEEP that just loving the surface level is enough to be in over your head. You don't have to swim out into the ocean that is there vocal references to psychedelics, Carl Jung, the Fibonacci Sequence, etc. For years all I knew about the band myself was the surface level and I'm a lifelong fan!
Tool fans can get alittle shortsighted sometimes. Tool is fantastic but there are other bands out there. And people who insist on calling them art rock as if metal is a bad word get on my nerves.

When that guitar solo hits its climax at 4:37 ,its one of my favourite parts in rock music.
I feel you described Maynard perfectly....he is the least spotlight kind of guy. Maynard's description of the process of creating a song with Tool....he always says....I just don't wanna fuck it up. Keep me in the back and you geniuses do your thing.

I saw Tool back in Feb of 2022 in Tampa Florida and they were perfect. I literally eat a whole container of weed gummies and I was so blazed. I was literally glued to my chair completely absorbed by the music. Best experience of my life!

I remember seeing Tool back during the Lateralus tour. They introduced this song thusly: "This song, like all our songs, is about butt sex."
Room reverb gives that safe space feel to the song. Their engineer/techs are top drawer.

You'd be surprised at how proficient these guys are live. There are tons of examples of their performances on here and their progression is insane if you deep dive back to 1992 til today. Their production is second to none. It's an experience, and this song was a closer for years.

JB - the band typically treats Maynard’s vocals as if they’re another instrument. His vocals are often much further back in the mix then most bands would put it because they’re going for emotion and feeling rather then definition. While the songs do have messages, the band doesn’t typically provide lyrics because their intention is simply to evoke something in you and let you develop your own meaning.

@@marylandstationmusic9422 hehe you can also tell him that the word he was looking for was 'cacophony' - a great word that describes a dissonant and chaotic mixture, in this case a maelstrom of sound. also loved his brilliant use of the non-word 'illebriated', which not only conveys what he meant, but adds 'liberated' into the mix, which is essentially what we are when we are drunk.

Great reaction video and discussion. There's a lot of debate among Tool fans about which Tool album is their best. Many say Lateralus. This one, AEnima, has been my fav album since it came out. Listen to tracks off it every day. If you haven't listened to "Eulogy" off it, check it out. Cheers!

@@marylandstationmusic9422 there is a pretty good sound quality video from the side of the stage. Look for Connecticut 2019. There are better visuals but they don't sound as good.

In their writing process, the band comes together and makes the songs, and Maynard comes in to write lyrics to what they've put together. And even live, they have his voice in the middle or back of the mix, it's a part of their thing that they don't put his vocals as the primary element of the music, but I totally get when John's putting down about this. On the surface, the lyrics of this song is about fisting, but if you go beneath that, it's about being open and accepting in a relationship. And underneath that... it's about fisting.
They closed out the concert in Philly with song just before Covid shut down. The building was literally vibrating with this tune. EPIC

Most people consider the drums and bass to be the center of Tool. I don't think anyone, including Maynard, thinks his vocals and lyrics are the driving heart of the band...
Also, just treat his vocals as another instrument. Enjoying the sound of his voice without the words and vice versa is fine.
Listen to Jambi next, think it will be one you like a lot.

Maynard intends to be the background noise, he used to sing behind a curtain to keep attention off himself... But he's definitely a lyricist and a gifted vocalist.

Yeah, that’s right. I remember I did go upstairs once, but couldn’t handle it! 😂. Obviously I have a much broader musical taste now. But yeah you’re right, it’s all very nostalgic. 5th Avenue was more of a dance club(literally about 5 min walk from the island). Not really my scene but went a couple of times to change it up.

Love this song, Eulogy off the same album is a must listen as well, has one of the best Maynard screams that will definitely blow your mind. Aenema all round has some great hidden gems with H. and Jimmy as well.

Dude your reaction to Opeth just popped up so I immediately checked out a few of your vids. If you liked Opeth you need to check out NeObliviscaris . Songs : Forget Not,Devour Me Colossus,Intra Venus,Eyrie are a good ep. of these phenomenal musicians. Two vocalists,one plays distorted violin,two rhythym/ lead guitarists,an incredible bass player and last but not least a phenomenal drummer. Its definitely a rollercoaster ride full of outstanding mixing of all of these elements without sounding muddy. Eargasms for days. Thanks.

Great reaction, y'all almost ran us hot goofing at the beginning but of course it eventually draws full attention.... From what you described you need to hear "H" which is emotionally soothing and slightly chaotic. "Aenima" and "The Grudge" are good choices too.
At this point in their career, they chose to mix Maynard in some strange ways. And you’re right, his diction is usually quite strange and has more to do with an artistic choice for that moment in the song and the point in the “story arc” of it, than making the words be spoken clearly and even audibly. I mean on the song Eulogy, they put Maynard in a pretty far back pocket and threw that radio voice effect over the majority of the vocals, so yeah I think you see what I mean…and also kudos for having the balls to mention these things cuz them like Tool fanATICS always have some shit to cry about when anyone says anything critical about them. You did it in a respectful way though and it was more like a mere observation than a critique.
Also as you might know, for pretty much the length of the entirety of Tool’s career, they’ve always written and created their work as if every member…including Maynard and his vocals, are treated like an instrument. In this way, he often does end up becoming…not irrelevant to the song, but…maybe…less prominent than almost every other band ever. But he’s still doing his thing. Once you’ve heard it enough, you’ll get curious, look up the lyrics, then have a mindfuck moment when you realize the feelings they give you through the music, alongside what the song is actually lyrically about. I mean I laughed…so fuckin hard especially on the last two refrains cuz it’s absurd. Finger deep within the borderline…knuckle deep…I’m no expert in this practice but I expect that is an achievable feat…but ELBOW deep…then before finishing the chorus like normal he hits you with the SHOULDER deep and I lost my shit laughing. I don’t know to me that’s funny shit. I believe that a percentage of it is meant to be, based on other songs lyrical input.
Oh and I’ve seen them live a couple times…earlier in their career they would all be like in equal lighting, equal distance on stage from the audience…like they’re all equally as important and again all instruments. Although when I saw them right after the release of 10,000 Days, Maynard came out in a bright orange tuxedo and top hat center stage and was tearing shit up for The Pot. I know this cuz I wasn’t high out of my mind yet until 3/4 of the way through that song lol. I remember those first 8 or 9 minutes so fondly.
despite your lukewarmth towards the vocals, it was cool to see that the song moved you. most people reading this will be gushers, converts and uber-fans, but i have equal respect for people who aren't easily impressed. what you said makes sense within the dynamics of this band. as far as i know, the lyrics are the very last element they add when creating their songs. mjk waits until the music is finished, lets the melodies come, and finally finds the words that fit them. they already work as solidly constructed instrumentals; the melodies are the icing, and the lyrics are whatever drug maynard decides to spike the cake with - you know they're there, you feel them, but you are not sure what they are unless you feel compelled to seek out the recipe. for some, the lyrics are the most important ingredient, but for many (probably the drummers amongst us) they are the least. peace and respect.

the original version of this song has always been my favorite. such a visceral experience.
The lyrics are... bonus. It's added depth if you're interested in diving deeper. Otherwise, his voice is just another instrument in the band.
You're not supposed to hear him in this song. Stinkfist is about being desensitised, that's why you can't hear him that well. He's role in the band is also as an instrument.

Maynard definitely prefers (at least in older albums mixes) to be buried somewhere into the middle of the layering during the engineering process. He does not strive to be the focal point of the band, and this is very intentional. This is reflected by their live shows with him performing in his comfort zone towards the back of the ensemble. This song is not necessarily one of my favourites, however it is one of my favourite maynard pieces. I think he would pretty much agree with what you were saying about him being a 'glue' that binds the bands music together.
I personally love him. I do think everything you said has merit. Nice track.

You should listen to some of the instrumental only videos that people have made on here. For me, it changes the whole dynamic of the song without maynard singing. While the songs are still great, you see how instrumental he is to the sound and the song as a whole.
“Struggling to hear what he’s saying” that’s the point! Try an experiment, next time you are speaking with someone, Speak in a low softer voice. People will strain to hear you and it will make them try harder to hear what your saying. Then speak louder and see how people react. They will more than likely try to tune you out.
its completely ok to be indifferent on the lyrics in Tool songs. They really wouldn't have any meaning without the amazing music behind them.
I know that this has been said but Tool's lyrics are 50% of the magic.

If you only want to experience tool on a superficial level I suppose you can simply enjoy the music but if you are willing to do a little bit of digging you will find treasure there. You are only robbing yourself (and maybe your viewers) of the experience.
Totally agree. While i love Maynard and think he's incredibly underrated as a singer, i would say he's the most disposable member of Tool, yet still irreplaceable. If Tool put out an album with no vocals i think it would still be awesome. I'd rather they went instrumental than try replacing him.

Pull up the lyrics as you listen and it will hit you over the head. It's mind-blowing the depth of emotions in there. It's like being born again. Also check out Puscifer-Existintial Reckoning, ( one of Maynard's other bands.) It is literally the best shit ever.
