  • In this tutorial, we're breaking down Sun Salutation A. This is the starting point of our Ashtanga Practice, and the movements found within it are our foundation.
    If practiced correctly, Surya Namaskara A or Sun Salutation A can build strength/flexibility and become a moving meditation. If done incorrectly, it can lead to pain and potentially even injuries. Follow along with this class to help guide you toward a strong and safe Sun Salutation that you can practice for many years to come.

    This was great! It’s good to know there someone out there not just teaching cool poses and go through motions without considering the anatomy, the different muscle engagement and the correct joint position so we don’t hurt ourselves.

    Thank you so much for such a thorough and exceptionally explained tutorial. I used to do yoga at the gym, and the instructor guided the moves but never really explained the breathing technique and why. Still a good workout but really appreciate you guys explaining the structure, and the counts, the proper movements and what to do during each inhale and exhale. Love all your tutorials!! So helpful!! 🙏 🙏

      Hi Jill, great to hear you're finding our videos helpful. Try to extend through your arms and lift your chin to extend the neck (versus letting it fall back too much). This should help with the pain in your neck & shoulders :)

    hello! great video, thank you for sharing or great lineage! couple of questions here... I always thought that in samastitihi the heels were a slightly apart.
    And you say the hands are to be placed shoulder with apart, but Jelena's hands are wider than shoulder with, which is what I'm used to do and knew for the alignment we use in Ashtanga.
    thanks!

    • @DavidandJelenaYoga
      @DavidandJelenaYoga  Год назад +1

      Hi! Thanks for checking out our videos and for your comments/questions. In Samasthithi the cue is toes and heels together (or as close together as is possible). For some people the heels will not come together and that's okay, but the action is to draw them toward each other. Hands can be shoulder width or a little wider apart. Jelena's could look wider on here due to the camera angle. Hope this helps :)

    • @srStinnky
      @srStinnky Год назад

      @@DavidandJelenaYoga yes i believe so, I don't know why I've always instructed to have big toes together and heels slightly apart to have the outer edges parallel and to start to have muscle action in the legs, but I could be mistaken. thanks for the answer and well I'll keep on seeking my drive to practice which honestly is a bit dead this days.

    Hi. I just watched sun salutation tutorials from multiple Indian teachers, and they do it differently. They do the leg lunges separately, not 2 legs at the same time like in this video. This is not a classic sun salutation, but ashtanga version, right? Thank you 🙏

  • @RAHHicecream

    My teacher told me to have my arms go out wide instead of straight up in front on count 1 😭 (he’s authorized level 2)
    That’s my problem with ashtanga, it’s taught so differently, WHY
    I trust your version, and I trust my teachers version, so the student is left confused on what is RIGHT

    Question, I noticed Jelena brought her arms up from the front and not the side, Is there a correct way front or side bringing the arms up? Thank You.

    • @DavidandJelenaYoga
      @DavidandJelenaYoga  Год назад +2

      Great question. We're always looking for the straightest line, and here that would be arms straight up/straight down. It's also helpful to do it this way for when you're practicing in a room with others so you don't swing your arms out wide and potentially whack the person next to you 😉

    Just a suggestion…but why say Sanskrit in Ashtanga especially for the start and end chant when the true meaning can be given by speaking English…maybe alternate 1 day English and then 1 day Sanskrit…
